The feature event for me so far this

year was the VW Association Show &

Show/Pizza Day in June.

Thank you to all members and

the rain to bring their pride and joy

for all to admire. Thank you also to

our Events Committee members who

without their efforts, these events

would not be possible.

Club Meeting Update The Club held the meeting on 10 July 2013. Present were Nino, Pat & Peter, John V and myself. We had good discussion about events coming up in the next three months. The Committee always welcomes from all members on suggestions events, so feel free to contact us. We encourage you to pencil in dates noted in the calendar of events towards the back of this newsletter and to keep a watch for further details on the November trip to the North.

As Association Secretary, one of my main objectives is to see the VW Association team grow.

I t has been rewarding to note that we have welcomed 6 new members since our last newsletter. The efforts and participation of new and existing members in our events will ensure that the VW passion lives on in Tasmania.

I t is also my responsibility to assist the Treasurer with the financial viability of our Association. We do this with the help of our sponsors and with member subscription contributions.

A number of members remain outstanding with their 2013 yearly membership fee ($25) and I ask those members to arrange payment of their membership via the application form on our website and forwarding payment to 89 Albert Road, Moonah or give me a call on 0438 284 834 and I can assist with the process.

What Was it?.... Love or Madness?

Following from the last Edition of “What is it” How many of you got it right?

This story is about an engineer (crazed VW enthusiast) who went to great depths, 50ft to be exact, to result a 1957 Samba. He found out about the VW through a colleague who explained that in the early 70s, as was common in those time, a friend dumped the VW into a lake. The colleague was able to say that the only thing wrong with it at the time was a bad transaxle and the owner thought it was too old to fix (a mere 15yrs young!). In 2008, the engineer pulled the bus from the water, a year later - with no restoration to its panels, he drove into a car show where the owner won an award for “Crazy” things that VW lov-ers do! It now has now been returned to VW glory.

I am sure that it is not just me that can relate to the love (or

madness) that VW brings to thousands of people!

We had a great turnout of people to show their support for the 2013 Show and Shine despite it being a somewhat drizzly day.

A special mention to the Bocchino family for providing the catering with fine home made goodies. In particular, to Luigi Bocchino who spend the day in front of a hot wood fired over to provide members and visitors with delicious wood fired pizzas.

The auction of items donated by our sponsors netted a few members with some great bargains. John Visser struck it lucky and was seen strug-gling to carry the load be-tween his raffle wins and auction purchases. Go John!

Judging the cars took place in the afternoon with trophies awarded.

Awards for Best In Show went to:

1. Graeme Turner for his 1970 Beetle;

2. Gerry Hopkins for his 1971 Beetle; and

3. David Watson for his Beetle

The Shannons Trophy was awarded to Peter and Pat Curren for the Beetle and handmade teardrop caravan.

The winner of the best Kombi Category was Noel Peterson.

Best Example was Paul Duker with a Porsche old 911.

Tip #1 Check your tyres every 2 weeks - more frequently when the air temp is highly changeable (season change). Also tyres should always be checked cold - not when you’ve just driven for a while. Tip #2 Carry your own gauge in the car. Service station gauges sit outside in the weather all day and get used (misused?) by all sorts…..do you really want to rely on their accuracy? Tip #3 Set to a sensible pressure - 30 PSI is not a universal pressure for all cars!!! Lighter cars (sub 1000kg) need lower air pressure than heavier cars, and generally go nowhere near

30 PSI. Beetle’s for example around 20 PSI front and 24 PSI rear is a good starting point. Wider tyres generally need lower air pressures or they’ll “balloon”, while lower profile tyres need higher

pressures to prevent damaging rims on potholes etc Car manufacturers recommend lower pressures - flex in the side-wall adds to the car’s suspension,

and gives a better ride quality and less road noise. Tyre manufacturers recommend higher pressures - their tyres will wear more evenly and generally last

longer due to less side-wall flex (which makes heat). General rule - go smack bang between the “normal pressure” and “loaded pressure” according to your

tyre placard or manual, sometimes known as the “mid pressure”. Tip #4 ”Learn” what your car wants over time and set to that. monitor the ear on your tyres. You want the wear nice and even, or possibly slightly more wear in the

middle of the tread to account for cornering. Wear obviously shows up as a slightly lighter colour and smother texture.

If you’ve got extreme wear on the edge of any single tyre - especially a front - consider getting your wheel alignment checked.

Adjust pressures based on the wear pattern….if there’s more wear on the outside edges add 1 PSI, if there’s more wear in the middle then reduce by 1 PSI.

The Dunalley Hotel was our choice of venue for our annual Christmas in July lunch. It was also our modest effort to assist the locals of Dunalley with some business after those devastating fires in January 2013. Normally, Christmas in the northern hemisphere brings cold, wet and windy weather. And the organisers of the lunch did their very best to

ensure that the weather conditions on the day matched the experience of our very northern friends. We enjoyed some traditional Christmas fare that included options of a prawn cocktail, mixed roast plate and veges, topped off with a gener-ous serve of plum pudding. And with the dining experience over, a small raffle was held. Winner of a VW Association cap was Paul; a $25 gift card was won by Francis; and

Karolina also collected a $25 gift card. We thank our sponsors of Bocchino Motors and Jacksons VW for providing the prizes. I also would like to thank two of our attendees for drawing the raffle tickets, Isabella and Joshua thanks for your great selection, although you forgot that my ticket number was 7.
