Ladies and gentleman, start your engines. The 20th annual Columbia Valley Classics Car Show and Shine is here!

Hundreds of car enthusiasts have travelled to Ra-dium Hot Springs to show off and admire the classic cars on display at The Springs Golf Course.

The fun starts Friday, September 18th, with regis-tration from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Radium Seniors’ Hall. A special edition of Music on Main, located on Main Street West, will feature the Surf Dragons, also from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Market on Main will be back Friday evening for one last hurrah before the year ends, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the Radium Plaza, at the intersection of Stanley Street and Main.

Mainly sunny skies are expected for the event, which will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast by the Radium Fire Department at the Ra-dium Seniors’ Hall. Show and Shine, which registered an astonishing 806 cars last year, will begin at 10 a.m. There will be a beer garden put on by the Radium Rotary Club on site.

An old-fashioned cruise will leave at 4 p.m. from The Springs, then move left onto Columbia Avenue, right onto Forsters Landing Road and then onto Highway 93/95 towards Invermere. They are expected to cruise past the Invermere hospital around 4:30 p.m. (Note: the cruise is not sanctioned by the Columbia Valley Car Club and the local RCMP detachment will be watching for lawbreakers.)

The Columbia Valley Rockies will host a dance fol-lowing the show at the Invermere Curling Rink. The fun begins at 8 p.m. and goes until 1 a.m., featuring the band Fender Bender of Calgary. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the car show registration booth and the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. A free shuttle will travel from Radium to the dance in Invermere. Twenty years ago, one of our local residents, Stan Harrison, along with his wife Peggy, owned C.A.R.S. (Clas-sic Auto Repair Services) located on the main street in Radium. Known for his love of classic cars and restoration, Stan, while in his garage with Peggy, came up with the idea of a car show.

With the help of a handful of volun-teers, namely Dick and Hazel Sundby, Dave and Maxine Ryan, Vic and Deb-bie Douglas, Barry and Jo-Ann Whit-ing, George and Sylvia McClean, Rick and Evelyn Eckland and Gail Horton, our first Columbia Valley Car Show was started in September 1990.

One hundred and twenty-five cars registered, with the show being held at the ball park in Radium. The dance was held at the skating rink, and Kootenay Express was the first band to play for our car show.

I would like to take this time, 20 years later, to say a big thank you to all of the people named above for having a dream that led to one of our biggest weekends. The car show has now almost 1,000 cars registering and is something Radium can be proud of.

Thank you to all the staff and vol-unteers who have, for 20 years, kept the dream alive and for all the hard work it takes to keep our little valley the best place in B.C. to come and visit.

A lot of our local employees deserve a big round of applause for continuing to serve the thousands who travel to our valley. Without you, we could not be as successful as we are.

I am proud of my home town, its people and all we are and can be. Thank you, Stan and Peggy, for having a dream!

The annual Show and Shine is truly one of the valley’s most popular and en-joyable events. The third weekend in Sep-tember is usually bright and sunny, high-lighting the gleaming surfaces of hundreds of classic vehicles ranging from expensive classics to amusing collectibles. Then there are the owners who enter into the spirit of the thing by dressing in vintage clothing.

Parents, grandparents and kids will
