(continued from page 1)

It was also about Jesus when my father was tried by the church for heresy.

He had preached sermons about racial equalityand higher wages for the poorand loving people of other faiths,

as well as preaching a sermon on peace just before World War II.

Some people told him to stick to the Bible. My father said he was preaching the gospel. And his conscience would only allow him to preach the truth as he saw it.As he heard it.As he felt the Spirit. It was about Jesus.

Jesus went to Galilee preaching the gospelsaying “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;

repent, and believe in the good news.”But the good news was not always received as such…Not then, not now.

The trouble was the good news proved too scandalous, too radical, too good to be true, and they turned their backs on Jesus…The people, the religious authorities, the government, and even the disciples,And Jesus suffered unto death…alone. As the spiritual says, “We didn’t know who you [were].”My prayer is that this Lent we will know who he is,And we will “give up” our hearts to a world who screams for a word of hope from the Church of

Jesus Christ.

from From Advent’s Alleluia to Easter’s Morning Light, by Ann Weems, WJK Press, 2010

We invite you to join the journey as we prepare for Easter and celebrate Jesus.

One Great Hour ofSharingIt’s time once again to start savingthose pennies, nickels, dimes, andquarters in your family’s OneGreat Hour of Sharing fish bank.Fish banks and a ‘calendar of giving’are available in the Fellowship Halland the narthex. Banks will be collected on Easter Day, April 8.

Last year, our Palm Sunday fish boxcollections in Sunday School andworship offerings joined those ofother churches around the world toprovide critically-needed relief to victims ofhunger and natural disasters as well as support forinternational self-help projects. Three of the largest areaswhere our funds were distributed included Haiti follow-ing their January 2010 earthquake; Joplin, Missouri inthe wake of the devastating tornado last summer; andPakistan in the aftermath of the July 2010 cyclone andits devastating flood damage. The Sudan also receivedmajor assistance in support of their self-developmentprograms in agriculture, water and sanitation.

Summer Evening Worship For almost a decade, the Meeting House has been offer-ing a summer worship opportunity on Sunday evenings. The structure and content of the services has remainedrelatively the same throughout these years. This year, aswe approach the time for planning and organizing sum-mer worship, we would like to invite the congregation tooffer the Worship Ministry input on a variety of aspectsof these services, from the time and place to the musicand meditation. Linda Lanam will be reaching out toany and all who have an interest in alternative summerworship options. If you would like to be a part of theseconversations, please contact her at [email protected].

Bridges to Worship Training onSunday, March 18Ellen Wayer, one of our veteran and gifted storytellers, isoffering training for new volunteers for Bridges toWorship. Participants will report to Flounder 1b for PartI when the children leave the sanctuary for Bridges toWorship. By 12:30 a chili lunch will be available inFellowship Hall. The group will then move to Heavenfor Part II. Child care will be available till 2:00 pm.

Bridges to Worship is a way for children toexperience the practice of worship in waysthat are developmentally appropriate. Theapproach is based on the work of JeromeBerryman, an Episcopal priest, and SonjaStewart, a Reformed Church educator. Themethodology is rooted in the work of MariaMontessori and Sophia Cavalletti. Bridges toWorship is intended for children inKindergarten through third grade. Childrenbegin in the sanctuary with their families andare invited to join the Bridges to Worshipgroup following the Time with the Children.

Bridges to Worship is not “sacred child care”. Ithas order and ritual. Children are nurtured in their

ability to be present with God, to find that “holy space”within themselves. The children are taught how we walkand talk during Bridges to Worship, helping them under-stand that worship is about being with God. It isintended to prepare children for making the transition toworship in the sanctuary.

If you have questions, please contact one of this year’sBridges to Worship coordinators, Kathy McCabe ([email protected]) or Laura Denk ([email protected]).

Children’s Ministry

In Heritage Hall….The Church in the Middle AgesMarch 4 and 11Dr. William Phillippe continues this exploration of howthe church developed and changed during the MiddleAges, giving rise to the Reformation. Constantine, thefirst Christian Roman Emperor, captured the churchand put a lock on the use of the mind. With state pro-tection the church took on the form of the state withbishops, and a pope, assuming authority to tell believerswhat to believe and not to believe. But Muhammadappeared and took another view of God. The churchsplit into East and West creating the Eastern OrthodoxChurch. The Renaissance reintroduced rational thinkingand the Reformation. This class is led by Dr. WilliamPhillippe, honorably retired Teaching Elder.

Great Ends of the Church: Reaching Out--Mission in theReformed TraditionMarch 18, March 25 and April 1As we continue our journey through the Great Ends ofthe Church we next take up the “promotion of socialrighteousness”. This “end” has historically provided theimpetus for the work of the church in the world.Working from texts found in Micah 6:8 and Matthew6:9-13 Cynthia Rigby, Professor of Theology at AustinSeminary, asserts that the church, through its work on theworld stage strives to be agents for the kingdom of God.

This three-week series kicks off on March 18 with theRev. John Y. Lee of the Korean Presbyterian Church inRockville and the Reformed Institute. Rev. Lee willlead us as we explore the historical and theologicalunderpinnings for a commitment to mission within theReformed tradition. Over the next two weeks, attendeeswill have an opportunity to learn about how theMeeting House lives into this tradition within the localcommunity, regional and national mission programsand in partnership with mission efforts overseas. Wewill hear about new and ongoing mission initiatives, explore ways we can become involved and have anopportunity to suggest new areas for mission emphasis.

In Fellowship Hall…The Sunday morning Bible Study continues its examination of the Book of Psalms. The Psalms are acollection of hymns, prayers, and poems that probe thedepths of human emotions. Intended for both publicworship and private reflection, the Psalter combinesvivid images with honest expressions of sorrow, anger, thanksgiving and hope. These ancient words of scripture continue to speak to the experiences of today.Join Hal Collums, Lee Posey, Linda Lanam and TomRoberts as they lead this study.

Please note that Adult Education classes do not meet onEaster Day, April 8.
