Preserving ancient Indianheritage in all its manifestationshas been the fulcrum of activitiesof Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan sinceinception in 1938.

Re-invigorating these ideals, the Bengaluru Kendra haspioneered several programmesthat have focussed on leaving alasting legacy for futuregenerations. Taking it to thecommon man through variedmedia such as performing arts, seminars and institutionalizedteaching of many branches ofIndian knowledge have been theroad map chosen by theBengaluru Kendra to keep aliveIndian culture.

The Kendra has especiallyfocussed on this, its pioneeringwork in resurrecting rare andfading arts in eleven States acrossthe country and conductinginternational conferences onIndian immortal scriptures beingits landmark contribution in

recent years. The visionaryoutlook and focus on reachingout to youth through all theseactivities has ensured theparticipation of youngsters inthese programmes.

Since 2013, the Kendra hasbeen holding mega annualconferences on Indian scripturesof antiquity and world literature -Veda Samvada (2013),Upanishad Sandesha (2014),Message of Mahapuranas (2015),Message of Mahakavyas (2016),Message of Bhagavata (2017)and Message of Ramayana(2018).

As an integral part ofdisseminating knowledge throughthese seminars, book exhibitionswere held as an adjunct to themain event, with every eveningdevoted to music, dance andtheatre, their themes drawnfrom the seminar topics. The international conferenceswere a holistic intellectual, literary, and cultural comingtogether of the best in the chosenfields, interspersed with therecitation of Vedas all through.

The Kendra acknowledgesthat ISKCON, Bengaluru, hasgiven unconditional support, without whose activeinvolvement, the conferenceswould not have been sosuccessful. Similarly, Tirupati-

Tirumala Devasthanams (TTD)have been supporting the Bhavanfinancially without whosesupport, it would not havebeen possible to take up suchconferences on mammoth scale. This year too, the BengaluruBhavan, TTD and ISKCON areorganizing a five-day seminar,Message of Mahabharata, fromJune 26 to 30, 2019, focussingon topics such as cosmology, geography, genealogy, yoga, legends, music and dance.

The most importantoutcome and lasting legacy ofBengaluru Bhavan, has been thedocumentation of all theconferences in both book anddigital form, which is of greatarchival value.

PrahalladaNatak

Prahallad Natak, a dancedrama, was written around 1860AD in Odiya attributed to RajaRama Krishna Dev Chotaray ofJalantara, now in AndhraPradesh. This story narrates theemergence of Narasimha, theman-lion avatar of Lord Vishnu, from the stone pillar of the royalcourt to kill Hiranyakashipu, thedemon king, who tortured his sonPrahallad for not giving up utteringthe name of Lord Srihari and hisclaim that God is presenteverywhere. In sheer frustration, when he asked Prahallad whether

Srihari was present in the pillar, and gets an affirmative answer,he kicks it in anger, andNarasimha emerges from insideand tears Hiranyakashipu apartand blesses Prahallad. Thisperforming art is very attractive inits combination of Odiya andSanskrit shlokas of colloquiallight music based on classicalCarnatic and Hindustani ragasand well defined talas, using boththe Sutradharaas done in Sanskritplays and the Gahakalike intraditional folk plays.

It contains as many as 42Sanskrit shlokas, with 120 songsbased on 35 ragas and six talas. There are twenty male and fivefemale characters in PrahalladNatak, four rasas predominantly,i.e. Hasya, Karuna, Bhayanakand Raudra.

The play was originallyenacted over seven nights; later itwas brought down to two nights;now it is restricted to an entirenight. The various punishmentand enforcement procedures laidout by Hiranyakashipu to destroyhis son Prahallad throughdemons, elephants, snakes, fire,

etc., are reduced to cut short thetime. An important aspect of thisplay is the use of the mask ofNarasingha. The mask is offereddaily puja in the Kotha Ghara orin the temple. After the withdrawalof royal patronage, the PrahalladNatak popularly known as RajaNatak became a Praja Natak.

Today, the Prahallad Natakgroups are supported by villagers. All the artistes and musicians whotake part in this play are amateurs, coming from different professionssuch as teaching, cultivation andsmall businessmen, etc. Thegroups travel and perform all overthe country on invitation at fairsand festivals. This entertaining folktheatre form has been influencedby its contemporary forms ofSouth India like Yakshagana ofKarnataka, Bhagavat Mela andTherukoothu of Tamilnadu.

Gotipua Nata

The incomparable richnessof our traditional and folk danceshas epitomized the essence ofsocio-cultural and religious lifeof the people of Odisha. Onesuch traditional dance is GotipuaDance which had contributed

Later, as an inevitableritualistic service to LordJaganath and other gods indifferent fairs and festivals likeJhulan Yatra, ChandanYatra andHoli, etc., the dance form hasbeen kept alive.Gotipua meanssingle boy. The dance of a boydressed in female garb and

During the 19th Century, this drama was performed ontwo stages. One for Maa Laxmiand another for Lord Jaganath.By this method, drama wouldbecome extinct / weaken as theaudiences were not interested init. It is a matter of joy that LaxmiPurana’s dramatic performancewas resurrected by the efforts ofMr. Banoj Sahu of Duan Pallivillage under the Polasara block. It is not performed on one stagelike Radha Krishan Prema Leela. This drama preaches theimportance of eradication ofcaste conflict and the necessity
