Bhavan’s Director Sri. H.N.Suresh , welcomed the gathering.Nadoja Dr. B K Sumitra, theChief Guest on this occasion,distributed certificates to all thesuccessful candidates.She praised Bhavan for takingsuch initiative to promote Indianart and culture and congratulatedthe students and faculty for takingso much care and interest forthe cause of music. She wasimpressed by the drawing andpaintings by the students underthe guidance of Smt. InshaUmmehani , which weredisplayed in the auditorium.She enthralled the audiencerendering two songs - one on“Shrungeri Sharadamba” andthe other a folk song.
Dr. B K Sumitra hasgraciously offered to conductworkshop on Folk Music, BhavaGeetha, Bhakthi Geetha andLight Music at Bhavan.
She also had a word ofpraise for her beloved fatherwho provided proper educationto her and her sisters in thoseyears when educating a girl childwas highly discouraged anddifficult. She recollected howshe travelled 80kms daily from aremote village to Shivamogga forher studies.
Sri Manandi N Sureshwas the Guest of honour on thisoccasion. He was generous tooffer two of his school premises— one at V V Puram and theother at J P Nagar, for extendingthe Bhavan’s Kala Bharathicourses at these places.The convocation was followedby cultural events presentedby the Bhavan’s South Centrestudents.
Smt. Shantala Ashokanchored the programme andproposed vote of thanks.

Mohiniattam or
Mohiniyattam is an Indianclassical dance form thatevolved in the state of Kerala.It is counted among the twopopular dance arts of the state,the other being Kathakali.Although its roots date back tothe age-old Sanskrit Hindu texton performing arts called ‘NatyaShastra’, similar to other Indianclassical dance forms,Mohiniattam adheres to theLasya type that showcasesa more graceful, gentle andfeminine form of dancing.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan hasbegun the Mohiniyattam Diplomaclasses during this academic year.This is one of its kind inKarnataka, where there are noacademic recognitions for theform in Karnataka.
The Bharatiya VidyaBhavan conducted a workshopon Mohiniyattam By Guru NeenaPrasad on 7th,8th and 9th ofOctober 2017.
It was the first suchworkshop of Dr. Neena Prasadin Bangalore. The workshopwas conducted in two batches

one to inter mediate studentsand the other to beginners.The workshop focused onbody conditioning and techniquesof Mohiniyattam. The studentswere fortunate to learncomposition choreographedby Guru Neena Prasad.
The senior batch learnta cholkettu, a compositionthat is first in a Mohiniyattamrepertoire.The cholkettu issaid to be of only intricatebody adavus of Mohiniyattamwith a shloka in between.The batch included artists withproficiency in Mohiniyattam andthe interaction with the Gurusolved a lot many queries thatthey had of the art.
The beginner’s batchlearnt a Ganapati shlokam andsome Chaaris of Mohiniyattam.These included dancers with
basic knowledge of Mohiniyattambut the workshop helped them tounderstand the art and their bodyin this art better.
Dr. Neena Prasad is theera’s most popular Mohiniyattamperformer. She is also consideredas a scholar of Mohiniyattam.Having had a background ofstrong dance academic educationand career, Dr. Neenaapproaches Mohiniyattam in ascientific manner.
Dr. Neena Prasad was veryimpressed by the work done byBhavan and the facilitator ShruthiKP. She also is of the opinion thatsuch workshops are of pivotalimportance for the propagationof the art form.
The workshop was attendedby thirty artists, some of themwere popular professionalsof the city.

Reviving art forms,
taking art and culture closer topeople has been the joint visionof Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan andInfosys Foundation.
A total of 332 programmesfeaturing 2759 artists attractingan approximate 91000 audiencehas been the substance ofBharatiya Vidya Bhavan-InfosysFoundation Cultural Outreachprogramme since its launch in2015 February.
Notable programmes like“Shankh Vadan” was organizedby Pune Kendra (Maharashtra).
“Bharatanatyam”Program was organized byTrichy kendra (Tamilnadu).
“ Group Patriotic songcompetition” , “Folk danceon Garbha”, A play onEnvironment “Park” and“Classical music program”was organized by AhmedabadKendra (Gujrat).

The play was supported by livemusic performed by very youngand talented students of Bhavan’sCollege, Ahmedabad. The playwas created as open stageprogram, performed in openground, under the trees withbasic set up of properties.The format popularly known as‘environmental ‘Experimental’or Method Art is basically a veryancient art form of Drama andmainly popular in villages where
people get to gather under a treeand create audience in arenaformat. The campus wasconverted as Garden andaudience were asked to seat inopen area on the stones, fewchairs, benches etc. The livemusic performed with Keyboard,Harmonium, Dholak, Guitar alongwith a group of male chorus hascreated a complete differentenvironment.

Oggu traditional songs:These devotional songs are
to worship lord shiva as mallannaand take his blessings. Thesefolksongs are mainly heard duringcelebrations and marriages.

The String PuppetDance (Suta — Kandhei Nritya)of Odisha is well-known asGOPALILA KANDHEINRITYA. The Subject matter ofthis Nritya starts from Sri KrishnaBalyalila (Childhood of SriKrishna) & until Kansa was killed.

Such near extinct Suta KandheiNritya presently exists only inarea of village Bada Kodandaof Ghumusar Taluk.
In olden days the artist ofKandhei Nritya used to go toMyanmar (Burma), Assam &Nepal to perform this art form.The construction of the toys /puppets used in such dance isextremely good and eye catching.Kandhei Nritya Guru (PuppetDance Master) SrijuktaChaitanya Behera of BadaKodanda is very much knownthroughout the country for this artform performance.

Sakhi Nata is one of thetraditional dances still existingand performed in Odisha.
In the past, Sakhinata wasthe prime & most important mediafor the spread & expansion ofChhanda and Champu ofKabisamrat Upendra Bhanja andKabi Surya Baladev Rath.Innumerable Sakhinata groupwere formed in hundreds ofvillages of Ganjam District toentertain the audiences / viewers.The researchers opine that thedress and ornament, decorationand facial decoration of SakhiPila, musical instruments / musicand songs have influenced theLila & Natak traditions of thesaid district.
