EAST ALTON – While preparing his unbeat-en team for Tuesday’s showdown with undefeated O’Fallon, Edwardsville hockey coach Jason Walker stressed the need for his Tigers to respect the Panthers.

That speech needed just a tweak between the first and second periods. But it was enough to pro-pel Edwardsville to a 4-2 Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association Class 2A victory before a nearly packed house at the East Alton Ice Arena.

“They might have respected them a little too much in the first period,” Walker said. “I thought we had a bad first period, but once we stopped sitting back and letting them take the game to us, we did OK.”

The victory leaves Edwardsville as the MVCHA’s only undefeated team at 13-0. O’Fallon’s first defeat of the season gives it a 9-1 mark.

After a lackluster scoreless first period that saw only three shots by each team as well as three penal-ties, Edwardsville woke up.

The Tigers punched in a pair of goals early in the second period to go ahead 2-0. Cory Johnson scored from an assist from David Mooshegian just 38 sec-onds into the second period. Then with 9:28 left, Jon Weisner scored a wraparound goal after pouncing on a rebound off a shot by Johnson.

O’Fallon’s Zach Jordan cut the Edwardsville lead in half when he scored with 3:03 left in the second.

Late in the second period, the Tigers killed off a four-minute, 5-on-3 advantage for O’Fallon after a pair of Edwardsville penalties.

“Killing off that 5-on-3 was huge,” Walker said. “Our guys did everything

they were supposed to do and we got out of it.” Not so on a four-minute Panthers power play early

in the third period. After a pair of two-minute penal-ties put the Tigers behind the 8-ball for four more minutes, they nearly killed it off – but not quite.

But Jordan scored his second goal of the game with 35 seconds left in the power-play opportunity to get O’Fallon with 3-2 with 8:12 left in the game.

That goal came after Johnson had given the Tigers a 3-1 lead at 12:47 of the third when he knocked in a rebound out of midair after an initial save on a shot by Marhsall Gevers.

With 1:48 remaining, O’Fallon’s Rubin Chavarria had a breakaway, but the Tigers’ Mooshegian slapped the puck away at the last second as they collided near the EHS goal. Mooshegian was called for a penalty on the play, setting up a Panther power play the last 1:48 of the game.

But Edwardsville staved off the threat and got a short-handed into an empty net in the closing seconds.

“This was a big win for us,” Walker said. “We knew if we wanted to be the best team in the league, we would have to compete with and be able to beat O’Fallon.”

2013HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION

The St. Louis Jr. Blues traveled to Blaine, MN for their annual NA3HL Showcase. Playing four games in four days, the Jr. Blues “showcased” their young talent to the league, Tier I and II junior coaches/ scouts, as well as NCAA scouts.

The Central Division and League leading Jr. Blues were an impressive 4-0 for the week-end, defeating the Toledo Cherokee, Metro Jets, Alexandria Blizzard, and Flint Jr. Generals. 95’ birth year forward, Cody Guidorzi was named the NA3HL 1st start of the week for his performance in Blaine. Guidorzi scored 5 goals, two of which were game winners, and added an assist, for a total of 8 points and a plus/minus of +7 in the four games.

As impressive as the 4-0 showing at the show-case was the attention the young squad, predomi-nantly made up of Midget aged players, garnered from the scouts in attendance.

The main goal of the program is player devel-

opment and exposure, and this year’s team is right on track. Earlier this season, just prior to the start of the NA3HL league play, the Jr. Blues traveled to San Jose, CA with all of their Midget aged play-ers to compete in the USHL Labor Day Shootout. In dominating fashion, the Jr. Blues won the tourna-ment and out muscled and out shot their opponents on average of 3-1 throughout the event.

The Jr. Blues look forward to the NA3HL’s second showcase in mid-February, where they will return to Blaine, MN to once again showcase their guys to the top coaches and scouts in the country.

It is with much sadness that I report that Hall of Fame Inductee – Class of 2009, Frank Ferrara passed aw ay January 8, 2013 while surrounded by his wife and children.

It was a courageous fight and he was a man of great humor, intellect and compassion, who had a joy for life.

The St. Louis hockey community lost a leader and a man with a passion for amateur hockey. We are stronger because of him. And hopefully we will ‘Keep Smiling’ because of him.

He will be missed.Please keep his family in your prayers. In lieu of

flowers, and at the family’s request, please consider a donation to the St. Louis Amateur Hockey Hall of Fame.

Services will be held at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary on Chippewa in St. Louis on Friday, January 11 from 2 – 9 p.m. The funeral will be on Saturday, January 12 at 10 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Webster Groves.

One of the allures of playing in the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Invitational for the Affton Squirt AA Major team was the chance to play unfamiliar foes.

Affton played four new teams and defeated three of them and tied another in winning its first tournament of the season.

“We wanted to play some new teams,” coach Dean Penberthy said. “The caliber of the teams was OK but we did play well. It was a good tournament for us. We moved the puck and did a good job of back checking. It just started to click for us.”

Affton opened up the tournament, which was played Jan. 4-6, with three convincing victories. It defeated Tomah (WI) Youth Hockey Club (7-4), Quad City (IA) Ice Eagles 5-2 and the Cedar Rapids (IA) RoughRiders 9-3. That clinched the championship for Affton, which concluded the tournament with a 3-3 tie against Crystal Lake (IL) Yellow Jackets.

“A couple of the games were pretty tight and a couple of them were not,” assistant coach Doug Kirkiewicz said. “We did a good job of putting the puck on the net. Nobody asks how you scored but how many you scored.”

And Affton turned on the red light 24 times in the six games. Tommy DiMaggio had a hat trick in one game and Andy Richmann had a couple of goals from the point.

“It was not just one person or one line but the whole team which contributed to the championship,” Kirkiewicz said.

The game against Crystal Lake was the only contested one of the tournament for Affton.

“That was a back-and-forth game against two evenly matched teams,” Kirkiewicz said. “Going into the game we knew we had won the championship although we did not tell the boys. You don’t want anything to change the focus of 10-year-old kids. We had the pressure on at the end and basically just ran out of time. I think we might have won if it had gone a couple more minutes.”

A tournament cham-pionship is a nice reward for the young players although the big focus is learning the game. And Affton appears to be on the right track in that regard.

“They are starting to do the things that we are teaching,” Kirkiewicz said. “We have some solid defensemen and they are making the right decisions most of the time and they are supporting the offense. They did a good job of

moving the puck and pass-ing. I think they are starting to get it.”

Affton will travel to Nashville in February for its next tournament.

“Hey Pete ...”The text message

popped up on my phone Sunday after-noon. It was from Larry Thatcher, the head coach of the Alton High School hockey team. What followed was news no one wants to hear, especially at Christmas.

“I wanted to give you a heads up ...”

Thatcher was texting to tell me of the death of one of his team’s players, Jordan Klope. He was a 15-year-young man whose life was cut short in an automobile crash Sunday morning, the day before Christmas Eve.

Not that there’s any time that’s better for this kind of thing. But there are times that are indeed worse. Christmas is one of those times.

“Jordan was a super-nice kid,” Thatcher said. “He was such a hard worker and so friendly. I can’t say enough about him.”

Jordan was doing one of the things he loved most when he died. He and some of his fam-ily had been duck hunting Sunday morning and they were on their way home. Jordan had recently received his learner’s permit and was driving a pickup truck, lost control and crashed on Illinois Route 16 in Jersey County.

He would have turned 16 in February.“It’s so tragic,” Thatcher said. “Those of us

who are parents take this kind of news harder than people without children, I think. But something like this affects everybody.”

Jordan was the kind of young man who makes his family genuinely proud. The kind of young man who impresses adults – in a good way.

“Alton lost one of its hockey players ... ”Jordan was a sophomore defenseman for

the Redbirds. He started the season on the junior varsity team, but had already moved his way up to dressing for varsity games as well.

“I saw him playing in a JV game,” Thatcher said, “and he impressed me. I asked him where he had been and he told me he had missed varsity tryouts.

“I told him I needed hard-working kids like him on the varsity and to get his tail to the next varsity practice. He did and worked his way up quickly.”

“It comes home to us ...”After learning of the tragedy, Thatcher

called a team meeting for 4:30 Sunday after-noon at the East Alton Ice Arena, where the Alton junior varsity team was scheduled to play two games.

“It was one of the toughest meetings I have ever been in charge of,” Thatcher said. “The reality of it all really hits home when you’re trying to explain it to these young men.

“But they reacted very well,” he said. “I’m an emotional guy and it’s tough. We try to shield our kids from this kind of thing, but it’s getting harder to do.

“I told them to look at what happened last

week with the shootings in Connecticut and now it comes home to us in a very personal way.”

“These Alton people ...”Thatcher, a U.S. Navy

veteran and former para-medic, has seen some things he’d rather not talk about. But those experiences helped him explain Jordan’s death to his team Sunday.

“Someone once told me, ‘Sometimes, God looks down and picks his most precious flow-ers from his garden.’ That’s helped me when I have tried to deal with someone who has lost a child,” Thatcher said.

“I told the boys Sunday that this is why it’s important to say ‘I love you’ and ‘goodbye’ and to never walk away angry.”

At the team meeting, the Alton players voted to go ahead and play their two games Sunday night in memory of Jordan. They won both games – and the parents did their part too.

“These Alton people are really something,” Thatcher said. “Someone already had made wristbands and helmet stickers with “45 KLOPE” on them for the kids to wear in the games.

“The word got out to the student body and they were there in force, too. They filled two sections in the stands to show their support for Jordan and the team.

“So many students on a Sunday night dur-ing Christmas break for JV games really says something..”

Maybe it was the Christmas spirit.The show of support had Thatcher nearly

speechless.“I couldn’t be prouder of them,” he said.Jordan was proud, too.

As you may know, the NHL and the Players’ Association have reached a ten-tative agreement on a new CBA. It looks like your St. Louis Blues will soon return to the ice.

As we prepare for the season opener, I want to apologize to all Blues fans, espe-cially our season ticket holders, suite holders, and sponsors. We share in your disappointment and frustration about the lockout and the lack of Blues hockey over the past three months. As you can imagine, the last thing our new owner-ship group wanted in our first year was a lockout and no Blues hockey. Everyone in the organization -- the players, hockey management, the front office – would have preferred to start the season on time.

Moving forward, our aim is to make up for lost time and to earn your con-tinued support. As I said last May, we are firmly committed to the Blues and to ensuring the franchise’s long-term suc-

cess here in St. Louis. With the lockout behind us, we reaffirm that commitment. But we know we cannot succeed without you, and we hope you will continue to support us at this critical time.

As you know, we have an exciting season ahead of us. The Blues, led by GM of the Year Doug Armstrong and Coach of the Year Ken Hitchcock, are coming off one of the best campaigns in franchise history and are widely viewed as one of the top teams in the NHL. The compressed season will be intensely competitive, with each game crucial in the race for the playoffs. We can’t wait to get started, and we sincerely hope you will be there with us.

the power play, and two assists over the weekend. Friday night, Novak netted an even strength marker late in the first period, then lit the lamp on the power play in the second period to help send the Gamblers to a 6-3 win over Chicago. His second goal was the 30th of his USHL career. The O’Fallon, MO native rounded out the weekend with an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Muskegon. Novak has appeared in all 30 games for the Gamblers this sea-son and ranks tied for fifth in USHL scoring with 37 points (13g, 24a) while being among League leaders with a plus-16 rating

the weekend and sported a plus-two on-ice rating. Kuster netted the first goal of the game for the RoughRiders in their 4-1 win over Des Moines on Friday. He would net his seventh goal of the season in Saturday’s 7-4 loss to Waterloo. The defenseman is riding a four-game point streak, the longest of his USHL career. The 17-year-old has 15 points (7g, 8a) on the season, which ranks him second among the team’s blueliners and tied for 10th in USHL defenseman scoring.

ST. CHARLES, MO: The St. Charles Chill, of the Central Hockey League, named Sean Ferrell Assistant Coach on Tuesday.

The St. Charles Chill President and General Manager Nicole Kupaks and Head Coach Jamie Rivers named Sean Ferrell as the team’s assistant coach. Ferrell, who resides in the St. Louis area, will work alongside Coach Rivers when the puck drops this October.

“Sean has been involved in hockey for over 30 years,” stated Head Coach Jamie Rivers. “I have worked with him for the past year and a half, he is well respected in the hockey com-munity. I knew right away that he was the right guy for the job.”

“When we were looking for the final piece of our coaching staff, we needed someone who was committed to the game and to the com-munity and we found both in Sean Ferrell.” said President and General Manager Nicole Kupaks.

As assistant coach for the Chill, Coach Ferrell will assist in all practices and will be on the bench for all of the games. Coach Ferrell will also take part in recruiting, team formation and community relations.

“First, I would like to thank my wife and family for their support over the years. I am

very honored to have been offered this oppor-tunity to coach with the St. Charles Chill, assist Jamie Rivers and work with Nicole Kupaks,” says Assistant Coach Sean Ferrell. “I have been working in skill development for the last 7 years professionally and have worked with some of the best players in the world. I am excited to take my coaching career behind the bench with Jamie and the Chill.”

Ferrell is from St. Louis, played youth hockey and junior hockey locally in the late 80’s. He has been coaching for over 16 years with experience in the following organiza-tions: USA Hockey, USHL, NAHL and AAA hockey. The last 7 years he has been working in skill development at the NHL/AHL level.

Sean is married to Cindi and they have four children: Adam, Parker, Killian and Bella.
