it’s St. Valentine’s Day. You’re on holiday with that ‘special person’. How do you plan to spend this most romantic of days?

Traditionally Valentine’s Day honours a series of ‘Valentines’ who were Christian martyrs. One Valentine in particular was secretly per-

forming marriages at a time when the Roman Emperor Claudius II had enforced a law in which young men were to remain single so that Claudius could improve the condition of his army.

Nowadays, for all budding ‘Romeos & Juliets’ out there, Valentine’s Day is the most important day of the year, a chance to show your love and affec-tion in many ways. A simple “I Love You” with a big hug matters a lot. But this is a special day. Try and express yourself more with candles, flowers and a nice dinner. Dedicate quality time for your sweetheart. For one day stop using Facebook and Twitter, put your phone down and spend time with the one you love.

In Phuket you are spoiled for choice when it comes to romantic locations. There are stunning sunsets to be viewed, beachfront restaurants to be sa-voured and intimate villas to be enjoyed. What about a spa retreat? A can-dlelit dinner of famous Phuket lobster? Star gazing on a private yacht?

For all you love-struck lovebirds out there, however you spend the day, try to make it special and meaningful. If, on the other hand, you

happen to be by yourself then grab a red rose and hand it the per-son closest to you, you never know your luck!

There is a trend growing in Asia. Throughout Japan, Singapore and

now Thailand micro-brew-eries are gaining in popular-ity. These small ‘brewpubs’ make all of their own beer on site, most of them only brew generic German style beer, a few though are starting to mix certain Asian ingredients to provide unique and interest-ing flavours for their beers and the first micro-brewery in Thailand to do this has just opened its doors in Phuket; Full Moon Brew Work is the first micro-brewery to use the same techniques as its Euro-pean counterparts, whilst in-corporating local Asian ingre-dients as well.

Recently opened Full Moon Brew Work is located in The Port area of Jungceylon Shopping Mall, nestled just be-hind the replica Chinese Junk , Full Moon Brew Work is the

Full Moon Brew Workbrainchild of Sukij Thipatima, a 30-year old Bangkokian who studied in America where, upon discovering the joys of beer, he started hatching his master-plan to open his own brewery. Part of this master-plan included studying the art of beer making in Germany, working for the marketing department of Heineken, and being the brand manager for Smirnoff. Bringing this experi-ence and wealth of knowledge together he has accomplished something very special.

So what is it that makes Full Moon so special? Well, the small-batch, handcrafted beers are uniquely created to deliver distinctive Thai beer styles. Currently Full Moon has three types of beer with

more in the pipeline (please excuse the pun!). ‘Phuket Lager’ is pale

and refreshing, and uses Thai Gaba rice from the King’s Royal Project to provide a deli-cately sweet and malty aroma. ‘Dark Ale’ uses black sticky rice along with caramel and chocolate malts to provide a richer flavoured, darker co-loured brew. ‘Oriental Wheat‘ brings together wheat, oat-meal, Thai tangerine peel and coriander to create a fresh, buttery textured, white beer. Each beer is handcrafted on site from 100% natural ingredi-ents, and with Sukij’s enthusi-

asm for beer, quality control is undertaken on a regular basis.

All three beers are particu-larly enjoyable but there is also a vast array of other drinks on the menu including some wonderfully crafted cock-tails with a Thai twist (Sukij is also a mixologist!), along with a great choice of food and snacks. The brewery is located on two floors with the ground floor offering a simple modern layout (with big screen TV’s

for sports fan) and the first floor providing for a more in-timate and relaxed beach at-mosphere that is just great for entertaining.

Full Moon Brew Work is open daily for lunch and din-ner and provides a wonder-ful retreat from the sun, sand, sea and shopping! Beers cost 170THB for a pint or 90THB for a half pint and the rest of the menu is also very reason-ably priced.

Currently Full Moon has three types of beer with

more in the pipeline!

PAToNGMargarita; With live music every night

this open air bar creates a great atmo-sphere located at the top of Bangla Road. For enthusiasts of live music performed with an Irish flavour, Patong offers a few lively Irish pub options. Scruffy Murphy’s on Soi Bangla is the place for chilled Guin-ness, good pub food and nightly live mu-sic. If you are on Beach Road head over to Molly Malone’s has a similar offering with outside seating.

The new night life just opening in No-vember is the trendy Factory Bar on Soi Bangla. With a chic industrial theme, a huge bar, great cocktails and cool sounds ranging from R&B to House to Techno, this is THE latest place to see and be seen.

PHuKeT ToWN Rockin’ Angels Bar is a must for both

lovers of live music and for performers who would like to jam along. The Singa-porean owner is a guitarist and singer and an all-round nice guy. From the Rassada Road traffic circle head up Yaowarat Road and the bar is on the left-hand side.

Ka Jok See is a Phuket Town institu-tion and one of the most successful res-taurants on the island. It’s a great place for a candlelit romantic dinner or a boister-ous night out, as later in the evening the owner Khun Lek starts playing hot music which turns Ka Jok See into a huge party, with even dancing on the tables!

SuRiN BeACH

Situated along the north end of Surin Beach, Catch Beach Club is a fashionable eatery with cool music, a chic outdoor cocktail bar and a wonderful seafood buf-fet. Catch often features international musicians performing their own compo-sitions, plus visiting DJ’s and regularly throws some of the island’s most amazing parties full of beautiful people.

Stereo Beach Club and Lounge is at the southern end of Surin and has recently joined forces with the famous IndoChine group to launch one of the hippest late

night spots on Phuket. It usually gets bus-ier later in the evening but is also a great place to go for an early evening drink and to catch the sunset. The décor is outstand-ing featuring a beach bar with white rat-tan chairs and tables and they offer a full bar, a wine cellar and a tapas menu.

KARoN & KATAComing up from Karon Beach and the

traffic circle, take the first soi on the left and you’ll fund a veritable warren of fun bars. The Terrace Bar is an upstairs bar on the corner and is a great people-watching spot. On the opposite side there is a hand-ful of bars serving good priced drinks, chaotic music, friendly hostesses and good humour.

For a quieter pint try Angus O’Toole’s Irish pub on the left at the end of the soi, serving international beers and all-day pub food. There’s no ear-splitting music, but they show all the sports on the huge screens, have the day’s newspapers and offer and a genuine cozy pub atmosphere.

The Ska Bar at the southern end of Kata Beach is built on huge granite boul-ders and has an outstanding view along the sand and out to sea. Here you can en-joy the cool reggae flavor, with friendly dreadlocked staff and terrific inexpensive cocktails.

GeTTiNG To KNoW...

How is the high season going for Trisara?

“This is a very exciting and successful time to be an established brand like Tri-sara within the luxury sector of Phuket’s tourism market. All the established lux-ury brands are experiencing high occu-pancy because we are witnessing a ‘flight to quality’ from our discerning and well-informed target group. Because of Trip Advisor, Facebook, Twitter and the like, people have never been better informed than they are today and they are seeking out established resorts where the actual experience they receive when they stay, exceeds the hype and advertising commu-nications that they see.

When we first established Trisara in 2004, we found that word of mouth was incredibly important in establishing our reputation and building our visitor base. Today, it’s as though everyone is sitting at a global dinner party exchanging notes about luxury resorts around the world and so only the very best resorts get the top end customers. If we don’t deliver ab-solute luxury to the expected standards of our audience, there is literally nowhere to hide in today’s technologically-linked world”.

Have you clients’ attitudes changed towards Phuket?

“We are seeing more of an ‘Oasis Tri-sara’ attitude in our discerning clients. They are increasingly shying away from engaging with the traffic hassles; the long travel times; the over-building and the environmental problems outside the gates of the resort. This year we have the highest rate of “returning guests” on the island…over 30 per cent have stayed with us before and so they know both Phuket and Trisara very well. We are finding that where before they would take a drive to Patong, Phuket Town, or the south to go to a restaurant like Mom Tri’s Boathouse, now they prefer to take our luxurious

“Trisara One” launch for a sunset cruise down the west coast, to avoid the on-land hassles. Even our proximity to the airport, just 15 minutes by road, is a big plus. Af-ter a tiring flight the last thing our guests want is a long trip down the island’s con-gested roads!”

What changes have you seen in the country of origin from which your guests derive?

“A country’s economic performance and the valuation of its currency have a big impact upon the numbers of visi-tors we derive from it. This year we have seen declines in arrivals from the USA and northern Europe, while we are see-ing a much greater proportion of visitors from HK, Singapore, China and the other high-performing Asian economies. We are also very popular with Australians and of course their currency has held up strongly.

We have a lot less long-haul guests and also we’re finding younger, better-informed visitors are the norm. Undoubt-edly the red shirt protests have hurt Thai-land’s visitation as a whole, but Phuket seems to be doing much better, or even benefitting from, Bangkok’s image prob-lems and as I said, this may also support the high end tourist’s increasing ‘Oasis Trisara’ mentality.”

How have Trisara’s final phase of owned villas been selling?

“We built 19 villas in our final phase of development and 16 have already been sold. The remaining three are still avail-able at a price of around US3.5 million each. The sales were incredibly success-ful and rapid, primarily by word of mouth with the need for very little marketing. This is a great testament to the superiority of the facilities and location of Trisara and also the ease and returns from villa rentals should the owners desire to be part of the rental pool.”

Anthony Lark of Trisara Resort and Spa

Anthony Lark is the well known and urbane General Manager of the highly successful Trisara Re-

sort and Spa set upon a private bay on Phuket’s north-west coast, just south of the airport. We caught up with Anthony to get an update on this year’s high season in the Andaman.

With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available.

Mai Khao BeachNorth of the airport is a beach to really get away from it

all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stun-ning and there is nobody here! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.

Nai yang BeachJust south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach

with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scatter-ing of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

Nai Thon BeachA little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possess-

ing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favourite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach..

Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in

a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim its not the place to go.

Bang Tao BeachBang Tao Beach has, in recent years, seen a lot of devel-

opment with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong tides. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportuni-ties for snorkeling.

Surin Beach Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala

beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

LiFe’S A BeACH

Situated just south of Patong is a beach that, sadly, many people simply bypass, which is a shame because it actually

has a lot to offer. Haad Karon’s incredibly long stretch of white sandy beach gently sloping into the still azure water is enough to enchant any one given a chance.

The beach itself is relatively quite, which most people will take as a blessing, only two rows of umbrellas will be found here which is in stark contrast to many of Phuket’s beaches which can sometime be up to four or five rows deep!

Karon Beach is great for families with its fantastic open vis-ta and range of nearby facilities. Swimming here is particularly pleasant as long as you make sure to pay attention to the warn-ing flags which tend to be in place throughout much of monsoon season but also intermittently throughout the rest of the year. A fine coral reef on the southern end makes it suitable for budding snorkelers and divers alike.

Off beach you with find a full range of accommodation from budget hostel right up to 5-star resort and everything in between, many hotels will have swimming pools to cater for time of unfa-vourable beach conditions.

Likewise you will find a massive array of restaurants to pick from; Thai food in swathes, a huge number of foreign food outlets as well ranging from steakhouses to Mexicans with a few Indians and Italians thrown in for good measure.

For those that managed to leave the kids with Grandma you will pleased to know that nightlife in Karon and the surrounding area has plenty of choice. Live music jazz bars, cocktail lounges and beer dens are all in abundance. Activities are well catered for too; elephant trekking, boat trips, diving and fishing trips are all available.

For those looking to try something a little quieter than the likes of Patong, but still want all the facilities and excitement then Karon Beach is a must try.

Laem Singh BeachLaem Singh Beach is small and very

popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning

Kamala BeachKamala, a 3-kilometre long beach situ-

ated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast, has undergone recent developments to the main street but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a grow-ing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims fur-ther back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

Paradise BeachParadise Beach is a little beach just

5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks flanking either side of the beach.

Nai Harn Beach Nai Harn is one of the more isolated

beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay defined by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade to the restaurants that now line the beach.

yanui Beach Yanui Beach is a small bay, 10 minutes

north from Leam Phrom Thep. It is not a popular water activity beach but nice to relax to get away from crowd. The beach is not so long and the sand is beautifully soft but not very white. It is a favourite bathing and sunbathing location.

Ao yon BeachAo Yon is another peaceful beach

ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket town. Although quiet with beauti-ful emerald sea this beach is not really suit-able for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

Kata BeachKata is certainly one of the most beau-

tiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crys-tal clear waters and soft coral allows for excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

Kata Noi BeachJust south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a

smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is su-perb for snorkeling; many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the beachless shore-line stretching south.

Ao Sane BeachAo Sane beach is a small bay and is lo-

cated to the right side of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

zone in Thailand. Read the passage be-low on Instant Antiques carefully; and remember that most genuinely old pieces of traditional Thai art, including Bud-dha images, require permits to take from the country.

instant AntiquesThis sounds like a

contradiction, but this is now a thriving new in-dustry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things

and the short supply. Originally, cun-ning entrepreneurs crafted and care-fully ‘aged’ wood, bronze and stone art-works to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the in-dustry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers pro-duce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone, takes the pres-sure off the genuinely old things, and, best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom TailoringThis is definitely bar-

gain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket, and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excellent to barely adequate, so look carefully and you can go home with both quality and real savings. It is important to start with a tailor early in your visit because at least two visits will be required, and those who are a little more finicky should plan on three visits to get things just right. Allow two or three days between each visit.

The Guide Phuket recommends: Mister Singh’s Fashion Gallary, Patong

Beach, www.fashiongallery.com. James Fashion House, Karon Beach,

www.jamesfashionhouse.com.

Thai SilkLong one of Thai-

land’s most famous products, silk weaving is still one of the major crafts in many rural ar-eas. The variety of materials available in Phuket is wide, and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colours, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive.

Tailors, jewellery and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home.

CeramicsThe two

major centres for ceramic pro-duction are the w e l l - k n o w n

Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bang-kok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

WoodcarvingMost of this comes

from the craft cen-tres of Chiang Mai, and again, Thai skills show through in a great variety of items that can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furni-ture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

AntiquesBeware if you’re looking for genu-

ine antiques, for this is one real danger

JewelleryBangkok is the undisputed gemstone capital of the world. A large portion of the world’s diamonds, rubies and sapphires and other precious stones are imported raw into Thailand, cut and set by Thailand’s skilled workforce, and exported - often back to the countries they came from. Most of South Africa’s diamonds, Aus-tralia’s opals, Burma’s rubies and Sri Lanka’s varied gems pass through Bangkok for processing. Thailand is definitely the best place to purchase precious stones and jewellery, and with transport costs so low all of these bargains can be found also in Phuket but be warned: purchase only from a well-established shop, and hopefully you will know at least a little about the gemstones you desire before entering the shop.

Central Festival Phuket - Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportu-nities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarket and cinema you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertain-ment complex in southern Thailand.

Jungceylon - Patong Beach

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shop-ping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak, this shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone.

Shopping wise the choice is world-class, comprising of well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, res-

Weekend Market - Phuket TownThe Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world fa-

mous but few people realise that there is an equally good alterna-tive here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale.

Situated opposite the Naka Tem-ple (which is also worth a visit) out-side of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West road lies Phuket’s equiva-lent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sales from seemingly useless

second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food of drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around.

The market starts in the afternoon and goes on until the eve-ning time when it can get really very lively.

The Dream Gallery, Chinese Antique Studio

Chinese antiques are becoming more and more fashionable

but it can be difficult to find origi-nal and interesting pieces.

The Dream Chinese Antique Studio was the result of, you guessed it, a dream in which the owner was summoned to come to Phuket by Buddha. Sounds a bit far fetched but it is a true story and the owner, already being a long time collector and enthusiast of ancient Chinese ornaments, opened her gallery with a small collection at first which has now grown into such a diverse and interesting range of artefacts, trinkets and other paraphernalia there really is something for everyone.

As you wander through the gal-lery you will be amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces are, al-most deserving of being placed in a museum for future prosperity. An-tique handmade cabinets, statues, traditional Chinese earthenware, metalwork and wallhangings are all available.

New items are added regularly, hand selected and imported directly from China.

The Dream Gallery Chinese An-tique Studio is open from 10am – 7.30pm, closed on Mondays.

The recently re-branded East 88 Beach Lounge at Serenity Resort & Residences situated right at the water’s edge overlooking Chalong Bay is a hedonistic treat for all your

senses. As you descend through the luxurious terraced residences

comprising the Serenity Resort & Residences set back from southern Phuket’s Viset Road on Chalong Bay, you feel as though you are entering a gentler, calmer parallel universe, far away from the hustle and bustle you have just left behind beyond the resort’s gates. Here, palm trees sway in the evening’s sea breezes and the only sounds are those of nature and the sea beyond.

As you enter the lowest beach-side level of the resort where the recently re-branded 88 Beach Lounge is located beside the huge infinity swimming pool overlooking Chalong Bay and Koh Lon beyond, your feeling of relaxed escape becomes complete. This is a quieter, more luxurious world, far removed from the stresses of ever-busier Phuket. Here is a place to chill out, un-wind and re-discover the pleasures of fine food and wine, served in an unrivaled natural environment.

We recently met up with the Lounge’s Executive Food and Beverage Manager Stephan Bouwman at the seductive poolside bar and over flutes of icy Prosecco we asked him why the unusual name of the East 88 Beach Lounge.

“It’s taken from the compass reading of Lon Island from here,” he explained. “Actually it’s 89 degrees, but of course 88 is a very lucky number, so we took a bit of creative license with the num-ber!

Catering to both breakfast, lunchtime

and evening audiences, the menu boasts

and pasta dishes, as well as burgers,

and offers a Kids’ Menu as well.

This is a Beach Club that offers a huge array of different activities. For example we feature poolside dining by day, plus sunset trips across the bay and to the islands aboard our luxury cruiser “Lady Anita”. We also offer brunch cruises; live music and DJ nights; Saturday Master Chef’s gourmet dinner; The Serene Screen Cinema and Steak night; Tropical Thai Night with live band; Seafood and Soul Night with live performances, groovy soul and jazz tunes; Cocktail Lab with DJ Greedy T. and we are becoming increasingly popular for weddings and birthday par-ties.

With a long low season in Phuket, we’ve put a lot of energy into developing business among the local residents and it’s pay-ing off. The constant point of difference in all this though, is the quality of the food, which is so exceptional that we have many guests driving all the way from Patong and beyond to dine with us.”

After such a build up there was nothing left to do, but take Stephan at his word and savour some of the delightful menu. Seated at the water’s edge watching boat lights traversing Chalong Bay and the gentle waves lapping at our feet, we opted for an Israeli Sauvignon Blanc to accompany our meal. This was certainly an unusual choice, but proved to be an inspired one as the wine, at just 1,500 THB a bottle, proved to be the match of the best New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs and is highly recommended when you dine at East 88. There are also great wines by the glass for just 190 THB.

Catering to both breakfast, lunchtime and evening audienc-es, the menu boasts a fine selection of seafood, beef, lamb and pasta dishes, as well as burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizza, Thai dishes and offers a Kids’ Menu as well.

As Stephan said the two Thai chefs working in the open kitchen under his direction do indeed maintain an extraordi-narily high standard of both ingredients and preparation in all the dishes, while prices are a reasonable at 250 to 500 THB for starters and 350 to 1,200 THB for main courses.

Among the terrific starters that we had the pleasure of sam-pling were a light refreshing spinach soup with salmon; beetroot gazpacho with seared scallops; a lobster and rocket salad and snails cooked in garlic butter and served in their shells.

For the main event don’t miss the fresh tuna steaks with crunchy veggies and the Australian tenderloin on a bed of sprouts served with balsamic vinegar.

As huge lashings of unseasonal rain arrived in driving sheets across Chalong Bay, the location became even more romantic and so we continued long into the night over coconut and pineapple Crème Brulees and coffee, as we indulged in the hedonistic treat for the senses that is East 88 Beach Lounge.

When living and holidaying in Thailand you are exposed to many microbes that often

cause diarrhea and respiratory illnesses. When I first moved to Bangkok was be-sieged by recurring bacterial infections both respiratory and digestive requiring hospitalisation and frequent trips to the bathroom. My treatment consisted of heavy doses of antibiotics that cleaned not only the bad stuff out of me but most of the good intestinal flora that naturally resides in your gut. Even after the initial infections had ended I still continued to frequent the toilet. What I desperately needed was a good quality probiotic. Pro-biotics are organisms that protect and enhance our life. They may play a benefi-cial role in traveler’s diarrhea, antibiotic associated diarrhea, infantile diarrhea, in-flammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and colon cancer etc.

Probiotics produce important nutri-ents, eliminate toxins, protect food from putrefaction, destroy “bad” bacteria, and enhance the body’s immune system. Cer-tain fatty acids produced by bacteria are utilized as colonic food. The bacteria syn-thesize vitamins for our consumption. They also produce antibiotics that can kill foreign species of bacteria invading our gut.

In general, probiotics are more help-ful in viral than in bacterial diarrhea suggesting immune enhancement as the mechanism of their action. Probiotics may also prove beneficial for preventing other bowel ailments. But not all probiotics are created equal. Just how can you tell if a probiotic will be beneficial to your health?

First, you need to know if the strain is beneficial for you as not all strains provide

ooops! Where’s the bathroom? Why you need a quality probiotic.

health benefits. This is why you must rely on a reputable probiotics manufacturer to research and formulate its probiotics with the best and most beneficial bacteria available.

The following tips are the most im-portant things you need to look for when purchasing a probiotic supplement:

1. Look for the International Good Manufacturing Practice certification (cGMP). This guarantees that the prod-uct has been tested for potency and safety.

2. You must also look for a potency guarantee for each strain listed on the bottle label through the printed expira-tion date.

3. Probiotics must be stored and shipped refrigerated for the bacteria to live. Several probiotic companies claim that they have shelf-stable products but these have never been proven effective.

4. Purchase only a probiotic with its supernatant (culturing medium). This provides nourishment for the probiotic and has been found to increase the ben-efits of the probiotic by up to 50 percent.

5. The packaging is an important way to keep the bacteria protected. Dark glass bottles and tin lids protect the probiot-ics from the damaging effects of light and moisture.

If you’re interested to find out more about this subject or probiotics in South East Asia, please call or email.

February brings thought of love and romance, but even in the idyllic, tropical surroundings of Phuket some couples may need a little help to rekindle their desires, especially

after a long plane journey or a night on the town. Fortunately, Thailand’s abundance of fruit and herbs means all you have to do to give your love life a boost is eat delicious food and enjoy a naughty drink or two.Aphrodisiacs were originally devel-oped as a herbal remedy for sexual anxieties. Pharmaceutical products have obviously filled that gap in the market today, but some of the traditional “recipes for love” are much tastier, so it’s worth indulging in them anyway, even for fun. Quite a few cocktails contain elements that add a little spice to your love life. Ripe, juicy pineapple adds sweetness and sexy vi-tamins, drop in a shot of vodka and you will soon be feeling both naughty and nice. Beyond providing a sexual stimulant, Pineapple is also rich in nutrients, including vitamin C, calci-

um, magnesium, phosphorous, beta-carotenes and potassium, a necessity for sex hormone produc-tion. Pineapple is considered a ho-meopathic treatment for impotence and a fermented drink made from honey was used medicinally in Egypt as a cure for sterility, and was once thought to “sweeten” a marriage.

Some of the best-known aphrodisiacs are figs, wine and chocolate – referred to by the ancient Aztecs as “the nourishment of the Gods”. So for the ultimate sensual tipple, wash down a bit of dark chocolate with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and wait for the passion to take over. Lesser known aphrodisi-acs include basil, a common ingredient in Thai food that is also known to stimulate the sex drive and boost fertility. Then there are carrots, which were once used by Middle Eastern royalty to aid seduction and surprisingly, garlic, which generates heat in the body that will stir your sexual desires, as long as you both have some to cancel out the fumes.

A high concentration of potassium, coupled with its obviously phallic shape, also make the banana a popular aphrodisiac. Then there’s coffee, a natural stimulant for both the body and the mind, which can provide just the right energy boost needed for a night of enduring passion. Of course, the best way to prepare for true romance is to relax and forget the stresses of your normal daily life. Phuket’s tantalising spa treatments offer the perfect antidote

to the pressures of life and the gentle touch of a skilled masseuse is sure to inspire a little passion when you get back to the hotel room. Relax by the pool, book yourself an aromatherapy oil massage, sip a cocktail and enjoy a deli-cious Thai meal. Then head to the bedroom and relish the moment.

There are scores of alternative tours on offer in Phuket: boat trips; pris-tine tropical islands; sunset cruis-

es; eco-tours; jungle trekking, elephant rides etc. We consider only a small num-ber of these to be quality experiences. Price is not the only factor, though gen-erally you do get what you pay for: buy the cheapest tour and you can expect to spend the day with a crowd of other tour-ists seeking the cheapest way.

Phang Nga Bay Day Trips (or James Bond island)No visit to Phuket would be really com-plete if one never got to see and wonder at the geographic grandeur of Phang Nga Bay. Every visitor, surely, must have seen photos of Phuket’s neighbouring bay of gigantic rock mountains rising vertically from calm, olive-green waters even before getting here. The sight of Phang Nga is dramatic, and being surrounded by these towering rocky monoliths is surely one of the highlights of a visit to Phuket. We strongly recommend a visit here.

Koh Pannyi – also in Phang Nga Bay (or Sea Gypsy village)Following the visit to crowded James Bond the cheaper tours shepherd their clients to Koh Pannyi island, the stilted water village seen in so many postcards. Often given the tourist name of Sea Gypsy village, it is in fact a community of Muslim fishermen, not sea gypsies. This village is

When it comes to shopping, the experience of an Asian market

is hard to beat. Phuket Town has both excellent day and night markets. To re-ally appreciate the main fresh food mar-ket, located on Ranong Road, try and get there as early as possible. It’s not neces-sary to be there at opening time – 2am when the wholesale buyers from hotels and restaurants arrive – but arrive any later than 10am and many of the stall hold-ers will have packed up and gone home.

When entering the market your nose will be assailed by a variety of smells – a pot-pourri of blooming flowers, sugar and coconut scented khanom (Thai desserts and snacks), fresh vegetables and sharp spices, rich curry pastes and a smattering of cooked foods.

Stalls are ranged throughout two buildings and, by tradition more than plan, have been segmented into unla-

belled ‘departments’ to make shopping easier. This means meat will be found in one area, fish another, flowers another and so on. This regimented arrangement also affords some fantastic photo oppor-tunities – just remember to ask permis-sion first. Everything on offer is incred-ibly fresh and should tempt even the most un-culinary soul. If you do buy any foodstuffs, haggling, unlike for souvenirs and clothing, is neither expected nor ap-preciated.

After lunchtime, with much of the fresh produce gone, some stalls are scrubbed down and stacked with clothing in-

stead. There are also many permanent clothing stalls at the back of the market.

Outside the market, the main street is lined with shops of all descriptions – basket shops, liquor stores, pet shops, hardware stores and fabric shops. Turn right to Suriyadej Circle and you’ll find yourself on Ratsada and Yaowarat Road, both prime shopping areas and really near the centre of old Phuket Town.

Sprawled around Robinsons Department Store on Tilok U-Thit 2 Road is Phuket Town’s night market. During the day it sells fruit and vegetables, much the same as the market on Ranong Road. After dark, though, it comes into its own as it is transformed into a major culinary experience. If you want to see where locals eat this is the place to come. The stalls become mini restaurants selling fresh and delicious Thai food.

If you are a people watcher and enjoy trying native foods, a visit to here is defi-nitely in order and you can expect to eat well for under 60 THB a head.

Watersports & Activities / 41

indeed fascinating. It’s a pity about the tourist crowds; all tours companies arrive here at the same time for lunch, bringing up to 2-3,000 people every day. Although worth a visit, there are better ways to get to Pannyi than by mass tourism.

Boat cruises to Phang NgaThe boat tours to Phang Nga Bay – the kind that leave from Phuket Island - usu-ally cruise past the James Bond commo-tion without stopping, continuing their quiet journey through the bay of moun-tains. This is by far the molst preferable way to visit this geographically spectacu-lar region.

Sea KayakingMany visitors consider a canoeing trip into the ‘hongs’, the hidden caves of Phang Nga, the highlight of their visit to Phuket. This mystical world of collapsed caves connected to the sea by dark tun-nels has been eroded from the limestone mountains over time by the rise and fall of the sea. Numerous companies have

sprung up, and it is worth looking around to avoid the cheap quickies. Sign up with one of the well-established companies, or with original company that discovered the hongs and began it all, Sea Canoe. This can be an unforgettable trip well worth the time and money.

Renting your own speedboatInterestingly, most of the beautiful im-ages of tranquil little islands and fabu-lously clear waters are taken on the outly-ing islands, not on Phuket itself. The only way to get to these islands is by renting a boat, and since there are few regular ser-vices your only option is to privately hire a speedboat for the day, although this is expensive it will provide you with memo-ries to last a lifetime.

Renting Traditional Longtail BoatsIf one wants a cheaper route, while tak-ing in a cultural experience, rent a tra-

ditional, wooden ‘longtail’ boat. These are slower, but are also fun. Longtails are available on most of the major west coast beaches, or at the north end of Kata where they shelter at night. They are also available – at much better prices – from the boat pier at Chalong, or on the beach at Rawai, right at the s o u t h e r n tip of the island.

WATeRSPoRTSDiving in Phuket

Phuket, and its surrounding Andaman Sea, have gained international reputation as one of the world’s top diving destina-tions. The Similan Islands in particular, are frequently ranked among the world’s top ten.

Several advantages make this region one of the best for both learners and ex-perienced divers. For learners there is world-class instruction at economical prices, and an abundance of aquatic life inhabit these warm and comfortable wa-ters. If you’re scared of sharks, don’t be, any of the graceful specimens found here are harmless and relatively rare. Whale sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean at over 10 metres long, are at the other end of this equation, being more common here than in any other part of the world. Ex-perienced divers the world over migrate to the Similan Islands knowing they have a near certainty of swimming with whale sharks.

While large fish are not so common in Phuket’s waters, the variety of corals, both soft and hard, is striking. But perhaps m o s t important for all divers, warm

water and year-round clarity makes this a great place to be down with the fishes.

Learning to DiveThere are any num-

ber of places to learn to dive on Phuket. Just look

for any 5 star PADI facility. A dive course will usually

take 3 or 4 days, starting in the classroom, then moving to the swim-ming pool and finally the open ocean. The result is a diving certificate recognised around the world, as well as a lot of fun and new experience.

Diving Day TripsFor those who already have their div-

ing certificate, a good range of day trips is available. A variety of diving destinations

include the two Racha islands south of Phuket, several pinnacles in the direction of Phi Phi, and one large wreck of a car ferry that sank in a 30 metre location in the lower Bay.

Diving LiveaboardsEnthusiasts come from around the

world for these liveaboards. Some run for up to 10 days and visit neighbouring coun-tries, usually Burma. Most divers book these trips well in advance, but those with time and flexibility can book a number of trips right here.

The Similan Islands, 90 kilometres Northwest of Phuket, is the most com-mon liveaboard destination. In good con-ditions the water visibility here can be astounding, though it’s generally in the range of 20-30 metres which is still excel-lent. The Andaman Sea is generally quite calm, making diving here easy and plea-surable.

FishingWith so much water out there, there

has to be fish, right? And of course there are fish out there – big fish, fighting fish, the sailfish. It’s Phuket’s one boast to fishing fame – there are few places in the world where one can catch sailfish so regularly.

Boats invariably head to the Racha islands south of Phuket where deep, clear waters attract the sailfish and their prey. At certain times of year thousands of sailfish congregate in very small areas, constantly leaping out of the water to land on their sides with the biggest splash – rounding up schools of smaller bait fish. Even when one can’t catch them, the very sight of so many huge, leaping fish is a worthwhile spectacle. Though they can be caught all year round, the monsoon season is particularly good.

A wide variety of other fish are also plentiful including small tunas, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, dolphin-fish, barracuda. Bottom fishing can give an even greater

the ultimate. There is nothing better than spending days cruising island to island, and waking up each morning in the shad-ow of a different island. Sailing, unhurried and serene, allows one to really unwind and absorb the incredible surroundings. PHUKET THAILAND

WHy NoT TRy BeFoRe you Buy?

Buying the right property in Thailand can be daunting. So how can you make the process a little less painful?

Quite simply a great way to make the final decision to buy a property, is to lease one first.

Pack your bags, come to Phuket, stay in a villa or apart-ment and get a ‘feel’ for the area. Take the time to travel to all parts of the island and live the local scene before deciding. After all there can be many a reason as to why you would choose one property over another.

Take for example the location. Do I need to be near the beach, near my favourite golf course, close to the airport if I travel often, conveniently located near schools, shops, en-tertainment? This list is of course endless but you get the picture.

Then the decision as to what type of property do I want? Do I want a villa with a garden and private pool, an apart-ment within a development full of facilities, a stand alone home within a rubber tree plantation? Again the list goes on.

A great option, if you already have an idea of where you are interested in, is to rent one of the properties within the area, or in that particular development. Sometimes the own-ers have properties to rent that are also available for sale, in which case you really get to know whether the home is for you.

Although in general off-the-plan properties can be less expensive, you can still benefit from buying such a property by renting elsewhere during the construction phase. This al-lows you to be more involved in the construction and in a better position to make decisions on finishing materials and furnishings.

Once you have test-driven your desired property it will be an easy transition for you to purchase since you will al-ready have built good connection and have a good idea of how the whole system works in Thailand.

This is exactly what I did when I moved to Phuket, I rented until I found my little piece of heaven, it took a while and with my knowledge of the market I had a huge advan-tage, but you can too, by choosing the best agent that can steer you in precisely the right direction.

Happy house hunting!

46 / Transportation

How much of Phuket have you actu-ally seen? Wouldn’t you like to ex-

plore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airportAirport transfers are relatively simple,

the airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometres from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Pric-es are fixed: 700-900 THB for an Airport Limousine or 150 THB per person for a minibus to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are private taxis but we suggest you avoid these since prob-lems have been known to occur.

The Airport Bus is a cheaper alterna-tive as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing.

Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National, have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket A multitude of airlines now run sched-

uled flights to and from Phuket, and dur-ing high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run con-venient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand.

Song-taewsThere are few buses on Phuket, and

the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two

long benches. They are usually colour-ful, with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximate-ly every hour but there are no fixed sched-ules, and they run when there are suffi-cient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise around the streets, slowly, picking up passengers. It is slow, but cheap, with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’ If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the big-ger song taew above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all ma-jor tourist areas, and they will take you anywhere, for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle taxisThese will be a new experience for

many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride.

These taxi riders are easily identified by their special coloured jackets identify-ing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

Renting a motorcycleMotorcycles, big and small, can be

rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreign-ers arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The acci-dent rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles!

Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times, and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. The police occasionally enforce both laws, so beware.

The real danger here is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insur-ance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significant-ly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting your own carSince Phuket is quite a large island,

renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want.

Renting is easy; private rental cars are easily found in every beach area, and major rental companies operate in most resorts.

Transportation / 47

If renting private vehicles from the side of the road, beware: few of these vehicles have insurance, and this can prove disas-trous in the event of an accident.

Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighbouring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacu-lar, making for a great day out.

Regional busesThe long distance bus station is in

Phuket town, directly across from the Royal City Hotel. From here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bang-kok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Sritham-marat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals.

Most of the tour buses to Bangkok leave around 5pm arriving in Bangkok about 6am the following morning. Tickets can be purchased either at the bus station or through travel agents.

Transport by boatRegular ferry boat services from

Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are un-scheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai

and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi.

Most people get to the other smaller islands by renting their own speed boats or even by chartering yachts.

Whatever your chosen mode of trans-port may be, enjoy exploring the island, there is plenty to see and do, more than you might have realised. Happy hunting!
