NEWSLETTER
Vol.1 Issue 1 October 2019
WITH ACADEMIC SUPPPORT FROM
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AHMEDABAD
OFFERING
PGDM (ENERGY MANAGEMENT)
PGDM (EXECUTIVE)
Dear Readers,
It is indeed a pleasure to launch the first edition of the web-
based Newsletter of NTPC School of Business (NSB). NSB has a
special focus on Energy which is pervasive. Hence we have
named our Newsletter as “Vyapti” – the state of pervasion. We
are really proud and boisterous to bring this first issue, which
unfolds the most unforgettable and precious moments of the
School. This issue brings up an exhilarating flashback of the
inception of the School, its history, and the events and
achievements during the last year. The fervent write-ups from
our young students and young at heart professors in this issue
are indubitably sufficient to hold the interest and veneration of
the readers.
Helen Keller rightly says that the world is moved along not only
by the mighty shoves of its heroes but also by the aggregate of
the tiny pushes of each honest worker. This enormous chore of
editing the newsletter would not have been possible without the
sincere support of the newsletter team who sorted the articles
from the flood of articles we received from our enthusiastic and
inquisitive students, edited them and finally came up with this
issue. I hope this souvenir will enjoy your critical approbation
and prove itself to play a vital role in the development of the
students, School and the industry.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
As being the Associate editor of Vyapti its a great pleasure to
be a part of NSB newsletter. So here we have “Vyapti”, the
long awaited first newsletter of NSB. “Vyapti” is a Sanskrit ex-
pression, in Hindu philosophy refers to the state of pervasion;
as explained by the editor.
It is a platform that exhibits the innovative ideas of students
and faculties. Vyapti presents the hard work and dedication of
the Newsletter team.
I would like to thank and appreciate the team‟s effort with
which we are able to bring the first issue.
MESSAGE FROM ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Ashita Birla
Assoc. Editor, Newsletter
NTPC School of Business
I am elated to see NTPC School of Business coming out with their
first newsletter Vyapti. I am optimistic, it would facilitate
administrators, faculty, students and leaders across the industry to
keep aware of the school‟s progress. From the onset, we have
envisioned this school as a „knowledge hub‟ more than a „business
school‟. We have dreamed to create it as a world class research and
policy center in the energy domain, acting as consultant and
advisor on policy guidelines/recommendations to the government
and industries alike.
I sincerely believe, this institute shall be an ideal organization to
provide leadership in the energy sector in the foreseeable future
and guide the industry and nation through an ever challenging and
dynamic period of change. I am confident that this institute will
have a positive impact by sensitizing and training minds, and
creating cognizance for a sustainable progress ahead. Once again,
our efforts remain always towards creating an entity that is nothing
short of being the best in the world.

COMMUNIQUÉ FROM IIM AHMEDABAD
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE The first Newsletter „Vyapti‟ by the students marks the first step
towards a new beginning which was envisioned with the opening of
NTPC School of Business. The incessant efforts of the students
have proven an entente between students community and industry
leaders. The stage is ripe for us to show the true potential and
vociferously reinvigorate the faith which is expected from us. It is a
chance for us to enrich and absorb the knowledge so that one is
prepared for any eventuality.
I hope the exposure provided by this newsletter invokes a
discussion and brings a greater interest about this institution. Dr. G.C. Tripathi, DDG (A),
NTPC School of Business
DEAN’S MESSAGE It is a great pleasure to note that students of NTPC School of
Business have come out with first issue of its newsletter „Vyapti‟.
Undoubtedly the School within a very short time of its inception
has acquired a position among the students community because
of its untiring efforts for excellence. However the time has come
and we need to capture the perception of the industry leaders
about their expectations from a business School so that we can
prepare ourselves for the future requirement. At this stage, I would
like to sensitize our students to listen and capture more from the
business world about the changing and future scenario and enrich
this newsletter.
Hope this newsletter will bring more visibility of the School to the
outer world by providing platform for discussion by all stake
holders. My best wishes to the hidden heroes behind this
newsletter.

Recognizing the fact that human capital is the key value
differentiator for the success of any economic and business
activity, NTPC limited, India‟s largest energy conglomerate
formed “NTPC School of Business- NSB, in the year 2014 with
the aim to nurture human capital for the entire energy sector.
Under the aegis of NEARS, NTPC School of Business (NSB)
was set up. NSB, an extended arm of NTPC limited, started two
courses approved by AICTE, namely Post Graduate Diploma in
Management – Executive (PGDM-E) program and Post
Graduate Diploma in Energy Management (PGDM-EM). The
focus of this programme is to provide more technical insights
on management skills and help nurture leadership qualities to
keep the students well equipped with an eye on the future of
energy sector. NSB provides necessary ecosystem for
candidates to leverage the unique positioning of the School to
develop themselves as potential world class business leaders.
Productivity and innovation are the focus words of the future
energy industry and NTPC School of Business with its strong
industry academia relationship has begun its journey towards
becoming a premier B-School providing the first of its kind
program on Energy Management in the country.

CENTER FOR INCUBATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Lithium Urban Technologies, operator of India‟s first complete-
ly fleet pinpointed a sweet spot- multinational employee trans-
portation. Its head of external relations, marketing and commu-
nication, Mr. Vikas Mishra in an interview with Ravi Nadella,
member Center for Innovation & Incubation dispersed the
knowledge about history, business development and current
market scenario of Lithium Urban & overall EV industry in In-
dia.
Lithium Urban‟s journey ended up being rather inspiring than
informative. From self-funded seed to a present fleet of 850-
plus cars and already clocking 80 million km, the defining drag
has been the lack of charging infrastructure funding and policy
decisions of the state. Thirty percent of the world‟s problems
due to contaminated air can be easily solved by increasing the
EV foot-print which obviously comes with an efficient charging
infrastructure.
GREENTREPRENEURS
Fundamentally strong ideas
generated in the conversation
were of social inclusion, posi-
tive start-up culture and finan-
cial inclusion. Vikash Mishra,
the company‟s Head of Exter-
nal Relations, highlighted the
need for different mind-sets at
different stages of growth: in-
vestors with equity also have a
say in terms of diverse experi-
ence implying, the requirement
of a capital-experience balance.
Having said that, an underutilized current charging infra does nothing but provide a meek image of the
market given the corporate agility. Besides poor strategies on the side of different players take the mortal-
ity to ninety percent. All that is happening with the EV market in India now was the crux of this part of
our conversation in the Town hall series organized by Centre for Innovation and Incubation at NSB,
Noida.
Teachers’ Day
Teacher, the knowledge that you impart is beyond the kind they have in books. You are not only just a
great teacher but the most wonderful person ever. The students of NSB came together to give a grant
celebration for them who has defined the term “students” amongst us.
Executive Freshers
The new batch of executives were given a grand welcome by PGDM EM batch 1 & 2, a fun filled night with
lots of entertainment, dance and fun. The whole batch came together in organizing the event, competing
with one another to prove their mettle, in true spirits to make the night even more memorable.

students after understanding the real problems of the industry got very
motivated to solve these problems.
Santhosh Kumar P: Head HR, CGPISL
As invariable as it sounds, a company is not solely focused on technical aspects but the trend has shift-
ed more steeply towards customer satisfaction. The final results in any company are purely dependent
on Customer satisfaction. It is also to be noted that to be successful, he/she needs to be competent and
equally should have a good character. The aspect of character develops inside you when no one is
watching over you.
Ashish Khanna: CEO & MD of TATA Power
Ashish Khanna – CEO & MD of TATA Power solar visited NSB to inter-
act with the students and enlighten them about the current industry sce-
nario. The talk was primarily focused on solar sector both India and

FACULTY THOUGHTS
Energy Transformation & Entrepreneurship
Can energy generation and distribution ever be ethical? Can de-velopmental practices, in general ever be ethical?
Yes, so long as what we do is in accord with nature. There is often talk of
“dominating” nature or “mastery” over nature. That‟s absurd. Anything we do
to nature, we do to ourselves. Joseph Campbell, mythology scholar, once said,
“Every action you take, is good for some, and not good for some.” So we listen
attentively to nature and act. Dag Hammarskjold in his Markings says, “Not
to encumber the earth.” I like that very much. Does use of plastics encumber
the earth? Does burning fossil fuels encumber the earth? Joanne Chory, Salk
Institute, says, “We’re throwing the carbon cycle out of balance by creating
an extra 37 gigatons of carbon dioxide every year. Our ecosystem can natu-
rally take up 17 gigatons of that carbon dioxide in the soil and the ocean. But
the other 20 gigatons is what’s been heating up the atmosphere and wreak-
ing havoc with our weather systems.” We are clearly burdening Earth.
With rising population and increasing demand, is coal energy a dying industry or maturing industry(new inventions or technolo-gies)? Why? I personally think coal based electricity is dying, and we need suitable alter-
natives fast that supply 24*7 power. True, the electricity industry today, after
over a hundred years stability, is in the midst of major technological advance.
But those advances are appearing from outside the coal realm - solar, batter-
ies, fuel cells, genetics - and thus coal-based power is Humpty Dumpty. Post
burning carbon sequestration is not going to happen economically, even if it
is technically feasible. We don‟t know where electricity or transport ends and
information technology begins, and what the center is, and what is the pe-
riphery.
Comment on current scenario of entrepreneurial entry into ener-gy The economist Schumpeter in his Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy
said that at the start of a new “S” curve of industrial advance, innovations
cluster together. As a result, we have the birth of entrepreneurial firms. Not
all of them survive. Some merge with others. But regardless, the new industry
advances rapidly. In the energy field, we are in the midst of such a clustering
of innovations. I cannot think of a better time to be in the energy industry.
The responsibility for all of us is great too - either we get energy right, or the
planet becomes uninhabitable for humans, and grandchildren become an en-
dangered species.

FACULTY THOUGHTS
A team is a group of individuals who may have varied interests and capa-
bilities, working together to accomplish a common goal. However, a group
does not necessarily constitute a team, for a team requires its members to
have complementary skills wherein a sense of mutual commitment, com-
mitted effort and respect drives the common organizational goal. Team
effectiveness is a vital cog in the success of any organization. An effective
team can truly make an organization realize its vision and stay afloat in
turbulent times. Effectiveness of a team largely depends on the ability to
clearly communicate the ideas, timely resolution of the conflicts among
team members, listening to peers, reliability to stick to deadlines and time-
ly completion of the assigned tasks and trust and respectfulness for each
other.
All these can be realized only if the team has a strong leader who has the
ability to foster camaraderie and inculcate a sense of cohesiveness among
the team members. In the absence of a prudent leader, a team is relegated
to being just a group of individuals which is a waste of time, money and
human resources. There are numerous examples emphasizing the im-
portance of effective teams. Tech giant Apple‟s founder Steve Jobs had fa-
mously said “…technology alone is not enough” .What he essentially insist-
ed on was the need for individuals firm disparate fields to work in consili-
ence. Yet another tech major Google lays great emphasis on finding the
perfect mix of individuals necessary to form a stellar team. In 2012 Google
ran a project worth millions of dollars, known as Project Aristotle, named
after the famous Greek philosopher who believed in the philosophy “the
whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. The findings of this project re-
vealed that in the best teams, members show sensitivity, and most im-
portantly, listen to one another. No doubt then, that such emphasis on
building effective teams has catapulted Google among the world‟s 5 most
valuable firms. Business world is replete with innumerable examples of
such kind which bring out the need and role of effective teams in building
a successful organization.
In conclusion, team effectiveness has a great role to play in the long term
success of an organization and it can be achieved only when individuals
are ready to work in harmony, keeping individual differences at bay.
Team Effectiveness
Prof. Ravi Kumar (Operations)

When I think of Team-Effectiveness; following words strike my mind…..
The six most important words: “I admit I made a mistake.”
The five most beautiful words: “You did a good job.”
The four most beautiful words: “What is YOUR opinion?”
The three most beautiful words: “If you please!”
The two most beautiful words: “Thank you!”
The one most important word: “WE”
And at last the least important word “I”
Thus, this is the essence of team work and proves to be effective
each time, every time.
CREATIVITY
―The one most
important word:
―WE‖
And at last the
least important
word ―I‖
Thus, this is the es-
sence of team work
and proves to be ef-
fective each time, eve-
ry time.‖

Every person is different and yet similar in so many ways, because we somehow go
through the same thing and yet we handle it in our own way which ultimately shapes
our personality.
However the real magic happens when we step outside our comfort zone and work
with those with whom we do not draw much similarity. To ensure a smooth function-
ing team, we must ensure that its entities are well balanced and complement each
other.
The secret of performing effectively together as a team is realizing the fact that,

based. The cupidity of the dominant species has always become the neme-
sis of planet-wide holocausts.
Since colonizing mars mission is nothing ahead of a toddler, we aren‟t
equipped well enough as to alienate ourselves into another planet, which
truncates our chances of deliverance.
One of the most pronounced of the lot, the end-Triassic extinction, also
called Triassic-Jurassic extinction, amidst various effects also resulted in
a multiplicity of giant reptiles. The global extinction event occurring at the
end of the Triassic Period (250 million to 200 million years ago) that en-
gendered the decimation of around 75 per cent of all marine and sublu-
nary species and about 20 per cent of all taxonomic families.
Although debatable, in a deeper study, many experts analysing the geology of the Jurassic period, reasoned that
gradual climate change, sea-level fluctuations, or a pulse of oceanic acidification during the late Triassic may have
reached a tipping point. There are although a plethora of angles that tried to throw light to explain the extinction,
all sources eventually converged to the fact that the end Triassic extinction was initially pigeonholed to gradually
changing environments.
The world is yet to clarify its stand to take precautionary actions to safeguard the future of the planet. Instead,
global leaders are being close-fisted only about the benefits at the national level. The need, to seek clarity of the
terminologies used to define precautionary principles versus preventive principles arise out of this parsimonious
attitude, thereby obfuscating the rights involved.
The tempestuous ransack of natural resources aided by cantankerous approach towards environment protection
might tailwind another mass eradication. The Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) reportedly
blamed anthropogenic emissions as the major cause behind climate change.
Human-induced climate change has posed the greatest threat
of the twenty-first century. Such interactions finally turn out
to be buffoonery farces only.
While “tragedy of commons” is our burning topic, our actions
replicate “comedy of errors”.

The Cabinet decision on last month to set up the International Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure
is yet another leadership effort by India towards tackling climate and other environmental crises confronting
the world. This will be a concrete commitment that India will make at the UN General Secretary‟s Climate
Action Summit this month. As per the latest data released by World bank, infrastructure sector will receive
nearly 94 trillion dollar investment worldwide in nest twenty years. Now the countries has to develop its in-
frastructure in such a way that ensures minimum contribution to the planetary overheating. Countries also
has to ensure the current ongoing infrastructural developments which are not reversible now does not im-
pact much on climate change.
The infrastructure has to withstand the adverse weather conditions like floods, rise of sea levels, degradation
of land and forest and the intensity of all these adverse effects will rise proportionally with the planetary
overheating. International Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure provides a platform to bring the
new ideas and knowledge for managing the disaster due to climate change and also this provides a platform
to implement those ideas.
As the nature of this climate change is dynamic and non uniform, this is the responsibility of all the countries
to stand beside each other for work together through the knowledge sharing platform. This will help the
countries to upgrade their skills and capabilities on handling the adverse effect climate change.

―The synergistic val-
ue of teamwork‖ and
―the crucial role the
manager plays‖.
‗Like it is said, the
most neglected word
or letter whilst in a
team is ―I‖.‘
The book “There‟s no I in Team” published by Apex leadership,
Anthony Sturgess and Phil Higson being the founders. Anthony
Sturgess has almost 20 years of experience in teaching,
facilitation and coaching of managers meanwhile Phil Higson is
a published author and active researcher with over 25 years of
experience in business and management education as a lectur-
er, developer and consultant.
This book gives a very precise view on teamwork and its relative
importance in any organization. Interesting fact about the book
lies in the relative ease in which the practical aspects of team
and teamwork are explained. It explains to its readers, the
necessity of teamwork and how it helps the organization and its
employees. The value of teamwork as explained consists of two
different aspects namely “the synergistic value of teamwork”
and “the crucial role the manager plays”. A brief description of
the exercises, onto successfully build a team, was well written
and conversed. The book also explains the principles of
teamwork and attributes of a certain team coupled along with
challenges of being a team leader, the role a team leader has to
play in shaping up of a team and its people. The book ends up
with the important characteristics of and the skills one would
acquire while working within the team.
Like it is said, the most neglected word or letter whilst in a team
is “I”. On summing up, it is highly recommended to everyone to
have a glance at this book and be mesmerized by the value that
it brings to your table.
