along with mower and technology purchases.
Once again, welcome back to school and
let’s have a great 2018-2019 school year!

State Fair Making Elaborate Plans
Thousands of Nebraskans are planning to attend the
Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln, September 4-9 for
which the most elaborate plans of 7 years have been
made. Coupled with an extensive array of
entertainment, the bounty of Nebraska’s harvest is such
as to make the most impressive agricultural and
livestock exhibit in a long time.
Entertainment will be provided in a string of great
features: The second annual state fair rodeo
championships, with 175 head of livestock untamed
and vicious, cowboys, cowgirls and Indians; an old
balloon ascension by W. E. Winterringer three days
(September 6-8) in front of the grandstand; Beckmann
& Gerety’s carnival on the midway; a horse show filled
with novelties in the coliseum (September 4-6); auto
races on Sunday which is also Veteran’s Day; and on
Friday, a thrilling airplane crash directly in front of the
grandstand by Capt. F. F. Frakes.

The above caption is the title of the movie feature
which will be shown at the Municipal Movie park in
Benedict next Saturday evening. A card from the
movie operator informs us that it is one of the best and
he further adds, “tell your readers not to miss this one.”
The attendance was very good last Saturday. Rain
threatened during the evening but the benches were
well filled in spite of the clouds and many expressed
themselves as willing to take a good soaking. Only a
light sprinkle was received however.

CLASS REUNION
What started out as a “few” Benedict High School
classes from the 1980’s planning a get-together (since
we only seem to see each other at sad occasions) turned
into invites via Facebook, texts, and postcards being
sent to those that graduated form 1980-1999.
July 28 was the date picked for a little reunion of the
BHS graduates. The home of Brian & Amy Hirschfeld
Pohl was the location. There were 33 BHS graduates
and 22 guests in attendance.
Attending were Class of 1980-Cindy Heiden McLean;
1982-Scott Folts and Ross Walkup; 1984-Clay
Bittinger, Linda Kinzie Koehler, Clark Pickrel, and
Tim Redman; 1985-Jim Heiden; 1986-Skip Blundell,
Rita Gonzales Hemmer, Robert Lee, Tim Rhoades, and
Linnea Walkup Williamsen; 1987-Noel Bailey, Craig
Bolton, Dan Hecox, Missy Kramer, and Ken Rhoades;
1988-Steph Dey Heiden, Tonya Epke Torson, Amy
Hirschfeld Pohl, and Deanna Rucker Bailey;
1989-Todd Hirschfeld, Charlie Huffman, and Susan
Wait; 1990-Angela Hecox Korte and Kim Hirschfeld
Cotton; 1991-Wendy Hirschfeld; 1994-Mark Clayton
and Scott Hecox; 1995-Jason Hirschfeld and Abby
Ratzlaff Pecha; and 1997-Dan Doremus.
Those in attendance enjoyed an afternoon/evening of
reminiscing, laughing, playing yard games, eating
munchies, sitting by the bon fire, and enjoying a pork
August 23, 2018
loin, baked beans, and cheesy potato supper.
The hostesses, Amy Hirschfeld Pohl and Linnea
Walkup Williamsen, set out to just invite a few classes,
but it somehow grew. The dual did their best to reach
out on Facebook and texts to invite classmates, etc. and
then when the list got bigger, they recruited the help of
Dale Moore to get addresses. Since BHS has closed, it
has been extremely hard for Dale to keep addresses
current so when postcards were returned Linnea did as
much research as possible to find a current address.
We know we did not get invites to everyone, and we
apologize, but we really did do our best to find
addresses. If you are a BHS grad from 1980-2002 (or
any year) please contact Linnea Williamsen at either
[email protected] or text 402-366-6881 your
current address information. Please include maiden
name, year graduated, and if you are on Facebook. She
will work with Dale to keep addresses updated the best
we can.
After discussion that night, and a great time was had
by all, it has been decided to do this every two years.
Amy and Linnea look forward to hosting/organizing
the event again and more information will follow. We
are hoping to have more classmates come and join the
fun!! See you in 2020!!

A MEMORY OF THE PAST…..
The following ad was taken from The Benedict
Broadcaster, August 24, 1938 issue.
Old Put If Off Poke is at It Again
Practically everyone plans on some repairing or fixing
up or some painting or decorating. But most of them
keep putting it off. They just never get to it and most
of it is never done. Buildings and fences everywhere
are in need of repair. Barns and sheds need fixing,
doors and windows need fixing, wood is decaying for
want of paint, the missus needs some conveniences in
the home, porch floors need painting and roofs need
reshingling. There’s so many things needed, the old
home looks so bad that a lot of people don’t even like
to invite the neighbors over-they would rather climb in
the old struggle buggy and drive around a bit, look at
the burnt crops and come back home feeling worse
than ever. Then they feel they must cuss somebody or
something so they just indulge in the popular sport of
panning the government and the New Deal.
They haven’t got much money but if they would use
what money they do get to fix the old place up a bit
they’d feel and fare much better. It doesn’t cost so
much to do a little fixing up. Come in and let’s figure
it up for you.
