NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION by Michael Scarnati

On Tuesday, May 1st, the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held in Sacred Heart Church. To be considered for the National Honor Society, a student from either the sophomore, junior, or senior class must have an 88 average or above. They must also fill out an application where they list the service hours they’ve completed and where they get the recommendation of teachers. They must also write a one page essay on what contributions they will bring to the National Honor Society.

During the ceremony, four candles were lit to represent the four characteristics of the National Honor Society members- scholarship, service, character, and leadership. As Mr. Racioppo called out their names, the students came forward and were pre-sented stoles and certificates by Mrs. McNamara, Mrs. Rybacki, and Mrs. Kelly. Then, Mrs. McNamara read the NHS oath and the students repeated it. Afterwards, the new inductees were addressed by Mr. Valentine who shared with them some words of wisdom. He encouraged us to use our talents to better the world. After the ceremony, refreshments were served in the Church Hall.

The following students were elected into the National Honor Society:

Christina Alvarado, Christina Babi, Arjon Beqiri, Shanice Charleswell, Sean Crosby, Kevin Dempsey,

Erica Dronzek, Albert Flores, Noelle Forde, Frank Giacoio, Khadiyjah Harrington, David Hurley, Caitlin Kelly, Shannon Kelly, Jennifer Lynch, Jenna Martino, Shannon May, Joseph Neto, Kristian Nika, Raphael Pizzaro, Richard Platt, Alexis Pol, Leslian Ramirez, Justin Rivera, Nnonyem Sappleton, Michael Scarnati, Emily Seijas, Juhi Singh, Melanie Subieta, and Kailey Townsend. They are expected to continue to do well academically, help out as tutors, and exhibit good character and positive leadership.

Congratulations to the newly elected National Honor Society members!!

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT by Kendall Spaulding

This school year at Sacred Heart High School, the Student Council was inspired to help others in need. We have so much to be grateful for in this world, such as our family, friends, and good health. “To whom much is given, much is expected” . Here at Sacred Heart, this is the common practice. From our blood drives, to raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to raising awareness for the American Heart Associ-ation, the Student Council alongside you the students of Sacred Heart have reached tremendous feats to-gether. Though at times it may not seem apparent, remember we all have the power to make a difference to change the world in our own backyard. Our very own generation is at the forefront to make a difference in the world of tomorrow. As time winds down for the Council of 2011-2012, this school year we only hope that we have led by example for the future. On the behalf of the Student Council, we hope you are inspired to spread positivity around the world and help those around you. We hope that you use the foundation of this past year to make brighter days for the future.

Congratulations on Graduating, Class of 2012. It was truly a privilege getting to share this year with you. Best of luck in college and in your futures.

Miss Vicinanza

Best wishes to the Class of 2012. Keep active and stop by and visit us here at Sacred Heart !

Ms. Smith

Last May, the Junior class at Sacred Heart consist-ed of 80 students. At the end of the year, they were joined by 50 young ladies from Our Lady of Victory. So, we began this year with a Senior class of 130 !

As the year went on, friendships were made and the class became one of the best we’ve ever had. They led the school by example. They consistently had the highest percentage of students on the Hon-or Roll. They also got very involved with extra-curricular activities. From the Seniors participation in the Yearbook, the Newspaper, the Play, the Mid-night Run, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Softball, and Baseball, the underclassmen knew this was the place to be.

It is a tribute to all 130 Seniors that they made it work so very well !

Congratulations and remember Commencement means a new Beginning. You each have talents. Find out what you’re good at and go for it !

We will miss you. Please keep in touch.

Mr. Racioppo

Good luck in all your future endeavors ! I wish you all the best !

Miss Heatherman

Wishing the Class of 2012 God’s choicest blessings as you begin a new phase of your life. Keep God as your friend as you strive to be all that you are meant to be.

JUNIOR RING CEREMONY by Nicholas Malizia

On Thursday evening, May 3, Sacred Heart had its annual Junior Ring Ceremony in the Church. This was a beautiful ceremony filled with memories that will last a life time. It started with the students walking in with the person they chose to give them their ring. Following a welcome by Mr. Racioppo, the First Reading was done by D’anna Ortiz and the Second Reading by me. Then, Nikko Alotencio and Therese O’Brien presented the rings to Fr. Moe to be blessed. After the rings were blessed, each student with their loved one came for-ward. The student was handed a rose by Fr. Moe and the loved one was given the ring by Mrs. McNamara. Then, the student and their loved one exchanged the rose and the ring. The High School Ring is a long-standing tradition and is not only a symbol of school pride but of growth and friendship. A word of thanks

goes to Fr. Moe, Mrs. Mac, Mrs. Calabrese, Mr. Racioppo, and Mr. Bauer for making this night one to always remember.

After the ceremony, the students headed over to the school for the Junior Prom which was held in the Gym. The theme for the Prom was Ca-sino night. A word of thanks goes to Mrs. Marques, Miss Vicinanza, and the Prom Committee for organizing the event and decorating the Gym. The Music, Light displays, and the Food were all terrific. Everyone had a good time.

GIRLS VARSITY SOFTBALL by Danielle Raiano

The softball season was a tough one for our team of 18. We had a slow start, losing our first 5 games. We broke the losing streak in an exciting win against Yonkers High School. However, this win didn’t give us the push we needed, so the 8 seniors decided that something had to be done. We got eve-ryone together and just talked. We fo-cused on our attitudes and promised to be more positive. We went on to play some of our best games of the season after that.

Even though our rec-ord really didn’t prove how talented we are, our ability to fight and never give up truly showed our will and desire to win. Every person on the team is dedicated and so is our coach. Just as we never give up, he never gives up on us. Every game Coach Campion says, “It’s not over yet girls; we can still make it.” We did make it into the playoffs. We played well and even though we didn’t advance to the second round, we made Sacred Heart proud !

BOYS VARSITY BASEBALL by Johnathan Gomez

The Sacred Heart varsity baseball team was off to their best start in years. They finished the regular season at 7– 5 and made it into the playoffs. Under the leadership of new coach, Luis Chode-Bido, seniors such as Johnathan Gomez, Tommy Como, Brian White, Brian Crosby, and Vinny Dempsey have all posted personal

bests this year. Younger players, such as Leandro Pena, have played pivotal roles in upsetting big names in the league. One of the highlights of the season was a 23-0 win over former division kingpin Bishop Loughlin.

The varsity unfortunately was eliminated in the playoffs at Fleming Field, losing 4-3 to St. John’s. De-spite the loss, we had an exciting season and one that Sacred Heart can be proud of !
