Due to these special properties, chelates are used in numerous applications that affect our lives every day: in household and institutional/industrial cleaners, for food preservation, in energy production, in fertilizers for agriculture and many other applications - including personal care products. EDTA is probably the most widely known chelate and is extensively used in numerous personal care products. EDTA as well as other more environmentally friendly chelating agents – like GLDA - help to soften water by complexing Ca ions and can prevent precipitation or haze formation and boost foaming. Chelates also preserve products from degradation from reactive and catalytic metals – such as Fe and Cu – that can cause rancidity resulting in product separation, discoloration and off odors. What’s more - chelates also help to boost the effectiveness of biocides to preserve against bacteria - which tend to grow quite well in many personal care products. Due to the boosting effect of a chelate – less of the toxic biocide is needed to keep the personal care product safe. In ophthalmic products where Pseudomonas bacteria that can be quite harmful to the eye, strong chelates such as EDTA are essential to keeping bacterial contamination at bay. The properties and performance of a wide range of chelate products for personal care use will be reviewed. Looking good and keeping us safe The role of chelating agents in personal care products

Welcome back Midwest SCCoopers to our September edition!

Hope everyone has enjoyed their summer so far and will make the most of it before autumn. The summer is always a busy time for people but I hope many of you had a chance to witness the beautiful cosmic phenomenon that was the solar eclipse! As we make our way back into our hectic schedules, I hope to see many of you at our next MWSCC meeting! Our September 12th Educational Dinner Meeting will kick off at 5:30pm with a networking social hour to catch up with friends and colleagues at Greek Islands in Lombard, IL.

Please make sure to check our Midwest SCC website regularly for updates as our Board and volunteers have been working extremely hard to bring to you some exciting events! Don’t worry if you haven’t checked it out as I’ll highlight some of the recent events and programs launched on our site!

During the summer, we launched our 2017 Student Scholarship program and started accepting Undergraduate and Graduate applications. The deadline for 2017 applications is October 15, 2017. For those that are interested, the guidelines, applications and full details are published on our website.

TEAMWORKS, TEAMWORKS, TEAMWORKS! I am beyond excited to announce that booth registration is officially up on our website! The Society of Cosmetic Chemists, Midwest Chapter will host TEAMWORKS 2018, the premier exhibition for formulators, chemists, chemical buyers, engineers and technologists in personal and home care, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois on April 11, 2018. Please make sure to register your booth and check for updates on Sponsorships and Social Night on our website!

Please save the date on your calendars for our Fall Technical Symposium which will be held on October 17th at Belvedere Banquets and Events in Elk Grove Village. Our theme this year is focused on “NEXTGEN: The Future of Home and Personal Care.” Our Board and committee volunteers have worked diligently to provide you with an exciting and robust agenda. For our keynote speaker, we will have Mark Miller, an accomplished business leader with over twenty years of experience in ingredients market segments for Home, Personal Care, Nutrition and Pharma. He will speak on “Symmetry! Consumer Trends in Home, Personal Care & Nutrition and What They Mean For Your Next Formulation.” We have an exciting program lined up for everyone so please make sure to check out our website for new updates during the summer.

As the 2017 Chair, I have been fortunate enough to work with some very talented individuals. As we prepare for the future, the Midwest Chapter encourages enthusiastic volunteers to join the ranks of the previous Executive Board members and run for office. For those that are interested, please contact Debbie Zartler at [email protected].

We are always seeking feedback so if you have any questions, comments or suggestions – please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I would love to hear from you!

Enjoy the remaining beautiful days of summer! I look forward to seeing everyone in September!

Thank you,

Cindy

SCCoop was able to catch our new Chapter Treasurer-elect Frank Wagner and asked him for an interview. He was more than happy to oblige. Be sure to congratulate him!

How long have you been involved with the SCC? I’ve been member of the SCC since 2002, joining shortly after entering the industry.

What companies have you previously worked for? McIntyre Group LTD, Rhodia Inc., Solvay Inc.

Who is your current employer? I’m a Strategic Product Manager at Southern Chemical & Textiles (SCT)

What is your Academic record? I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry from Governors State University.

Why do you think SCC membership is important? There is no better way to network in our industry than the SCC. It’s a great way to stay on top of market trends, what your competitors are up to and to stay in touch with former colleagues. Because it’s a national society you can go to any region of the country and attend a meeting as a member and will almost always see a friendly face.

Additional professional memberships: Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

What is your favorite SCC moment (function, event, talk or other)? My favorite function was the social night at the Hoffbrau house. Great people, great atmosphere, great food and good beer!

Where have you lived? I grew up in Frankfort, IL and live there now. I have also lived in Fort Wayne, IN, Upland, IN and practically lived in central NJ for 2+ years.

Tell us about your hobbies or leisure activities: I am an active home beer brewer (I don’t have a sweet tooth, I have a beer tooth). I also enjoy outdoor sports like hunting and fishing. My newest love is salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. I also hold a private pilot’s license and am a deacon at my church.

What is your favorite restaurant? Tribes Beer Company in Mokena, IL (go figure). What is your favorite board game? I’m not a big fan of “bored” games but do enjoy dominos and Connect 4, although my kids regularly beat me severely at Connect 4.

TOPIC: Green Fragrance SolubilizersABSTRACT:As formulators continue to look for natural alternatives to ethoxylated materials, fragrance solubilization has been an area with few viable alternatives. Fortunately, good formulation solutions are starting to enter the marketplace. We’ll look at the performance of several commercially available non-ethoxylated and naturally certified solubilizers and compare their performance to traditional solubilizers as well as each other. We’ll also see how these new solubilizers compare with regard to ease of use, formulation compatibility, and natural branding.
