Dear Colleagues, The British Ambassador, Ben Lyster-Binns, is leaving Uruguay for good next month and we are going to miss him sorely. From my point of view he is the best Ambassador we have ever had, although all the previous ones represented Britain well and had a good relationship with Uruguay. Ben from the very start was interested in all things Uruguayan, our language, our history, our customs, our education and so on. He travelled all over our country admiring its beautiful landscapes and meeting a lot of our countrymen. Every year on Heritage Day, the British Residence, his home in Uruguay, had its doors wide open for all those who wanted to visit it. But not only on that particular day but whenever there was occasion for celebration the doors of the Residence were wide open. He did a lot for education. He was always there when we asked him to hand out International Awards and say some words of congratulations and encouragement to the students. He worked hard to send graduates on postgraduate scholarships to Britain. As for all the work he did towards the excellent relationship between Britain and Uruguay, it would be too long to relate here. On Monday 26th September, Dickens invited Ben to a farewell lunch at Francis. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed ourselves. We gave Ben a china unicorn (the Dickens symbol) to remember us by. And then...The final goodbye! Ben and family, all the very best from the Dickens Team and all the teachers and students who belong to the Dickens family! And thank you! ORAL EXAMS

Last 22nd October students from Montevideo and the Metropolitan Area were examined on their speaking skills. It was a marvellous day and we all enjoyed a wonderful session! Firstly, I would like to congratulate Dickens External Teachers and their students on their hard work and dedication to the preparation of the exam. In addition, I would like to thank all the experienced examiners working at Dickens Pocitos and Dickens Punta Gorda, and the committed ushers who offered their kind smiles and reassuring comments to nervous candidates all the session. Congratulations Dickens Team!!

REVISION TECHNIQUES

The secret to final revision success Planning is the official secret to do well in tests and exams. You are the one to create a clear revision plan and make your students feel that they are in control of their work.

Here you have some tips: Create a revision schedule for each class. Explain the revising process clearly. Break revision time into short periods. Don’t spend a whole lesson doing written exercises. Students will end

up hating the subject. Make revision interesting. Interactive lessons with hands-on activities and cooperative learning. Be creative! Offer activities which provide opportunities for all students to feel successful. Accommodation of the needs of students at different levels of ability is also essential. Integrate language skills, thinking skills and content knowledge. Provide guided practice with feedback. Gradually work towards independent work by students.

at the useful websites, you’ll find plenty of exercises to use in your revision lessons.

Moderation and standardisation of FINAL EXAMINATIONS 2016

The validation and certification of Dickens final exams by Oxford House College is immensely valuable and we are very proud to be working with such a prestigious institution. Once again, Mr Ben Feben will be representing Oxford House College during the standardisation procedures of Dickens final examinations. As every year, he will also deliver workshops on testing and assessment for our Testing Team, as we firmly believe in continuous professional development. We wish you and your students success in this final step of the course!

30th May 2016 Dear All, I trust this email finds you well. Today we received an inspection visit from Cambridge English and it all went very well. After the inspection visit was over I had a conversation with the inspector on the electronic devices regulation. We are all well aware of the threat these devices pose to the security and validity of international examinations and, therefore, they come in first place on Cambridge concern list, together with proof of identity. The inspector highlighted the importance of candidates NOT BRINGING their electronic devices (mobile phones, watches, etc) to the exam venue. If they do bring them, they have to know that these items will be confiscated and that we cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to their possessions. This applies to both the written and oral papers. It is vital that you share this information with your students. They have to know that they run the risk of being disqualified if they do not follow this regulation. We trust that, if students are informed of the risks and consequences, they will be able to make the right decision. The presentation of a valid ID for both the written and oral exams is also highly important. Please do contact us if you have any queries regarding this or any other matter. Many thanks for your support in sharing this information. Kind regards Monica Leon International Examinations Manager DICKENS INSTITUTE

Dear Colleagues, We’d like to remind you of this vital information the International Exams department has shared with all of us previously. We think it is very important to make sure our students are aware of this regulation in order to avoid unfortunate events.

A message from Cecilia Pérez, a new DICKENS Teacher in Santa Lucía Last Friday 12th we were glad to receive Stella, Andrea, Laura and Teresa in Santa Lucìa and participated on the workshop “Preparing successful students for oral results”. We shared experiences and had a nice time while learning about what our students are expected to manage in the oral exam. I found it very useful as the information was clear to understand and we were provided with lots of practical ideas to implement in class. I really enjoyed the different activities as they were motivating and challenging. We had fun and experienced how students feel when they develop their speaking skills. I would also like to say that this was the first time I attended a workshop for teachers in the town where I live and thank the Dickens Team and my colleagues in Santa Lucìa for giving me this great opportunity. I have been working with you for only six months and you make me feel so welcomed. Let’s keep on sharing moments like this! Cecilia

Thank you Cecilia for your LOVELY words! WELCOME TO THE DIKENS FAMILY!
