Love has been written about, sungabout, flung about, debated, orches-trated, misrepresented and vented.

You’d think love could use a break. But, alas, love gets no time off, espe-

cially during February, one of love’shigh, holymonths.

While formany Valentine’sDay seems likes o m e t h i n ginvented byretailers, it origi-nally was the cel-ebration of St.Valentine, whichmany religiousdenominationsstill observe. St.Valentine wasaround when the Roman Empire wasstill going strong and performed wed-dings for soldiers and ministered toChristians.

It wasn’t until the Middle Ages whencourtly love came into vogue thatValentine’s Day took on more of itscurrent attributes. It was in the 15thcentury when it really took off andlovers began expressing themselveswith flowers, candy and greetingcards, known as Valentines, of course.

But getting back to love, we have anissue of Forever Young packed full of it— from the story of an older coupletaking a second chance at nuptials tohow to best go about planning thosenuptials.

We don’t leave out the lonely hearts, though, and have some tips for them, too. Of course, Dan Smith has his owntake on courtship. We also have aplace for you to try for a romantic din-ner. Mario’s has probably seen enoughmarriage proposals that love is justdripping off the walls.

We hope you enjoy this issue of For-ever Young and find that certainsomeone who can bring you happi-ness for years to come.

Coming in March, we’ll help youplan your travels for the year.

Well, Rod Stewart is still mad atMaggie. It’s true. He was on the radio, complaining about her again theother day. She did, after all, wreck hisbed. And NASA hasn’t confirmed it,but the first man on the moon actual-ly may have been a woman namedAlice Kramden. Kid Rock and PamelaAnderson had four weddings, but notmuch of a marriage. Watching the tel-evised nuptials of Prince Charles andLady Diana had fairy tale junkies fan-ning themselves. The ending was any-thing but happy, but your marriagecan be different.

Bethie Patrick, the assistant manag-er at David’s Bridal in The Pavilion atPort Orange, said the store is in itsprime season. The most popularengagement days are Thanksgiving,Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’sEve and Valentine’s Day, she said. Jan-uary, February and March are thestore’s busiest months.

“We had six brides in here the dayafter Christmas,” Ms. Patrick said.“They’d all gotten engaged on Christ-mas Eve.”

Websites caution couples againstjetting away from reality as they planfor the big day, urging them toremember that it is one day of many.

Planning for the rest, expertsadvised, should be every couple’s toppriority.

According to marriageadvocates.com, “experts are almost unanimousin advising against unrealistic expec-tations.”

The site lists 10 items often associ-ated with living unexpectedly“unhappy ever after,” including differ-ences of opinion, competing or con-flicting priorities, having and raisingchildren, illness or injury, competingcareer interests, financial stress, dis-honesty, power struggles, infidelity, conflicts over in-laws and other fami-ly and friend conflicts.

“None of these enter into our fairytales, and most couples — particular-ly the women — spend far more time

planning the wedding than planninga solid foundation for the marriage.Men spend less time planning adream wedding, but the failure toplan a solid foundation for marriageis the same,” the website reported.

Ken Biggs and Lana Martin of Day-tona Beach agree their first marriagesfell short of their expectations. Thiscouple agrees on a lot of things.

Mr. Biggs was married for 10 yearsthe first time around, Ms. Martin, for20. Both had suffered enough in thedating world by the time they met lastSeptember.

They got engaged in November andare planning to be married on the

anniversary of their first date, Sept. 21.“We’re not messin’ around,” Mr.

Biggs said, laughing.Ms. Martin looked at him adoringly,

frequently throwing her head back tolaugh at things he said.

“We both got married too young,”Mr. Biggs said. “I was 21. We weren’twith the right person. Now we’ve hadkids. We’ve both been married, bothdated other people. We know what wewant.”

“We know who we are,” Ms. Martinadded.

She was 19 when she took her firstwedding vows.

Mr. Biggs said at those ages neither

of them had grown up yet.“You wouldn’t have wanted to know

me back then,” he said. A mutual appreciation of their com-

patibility has each of them confidentthis union will work.

“We’ve been through so much withso many people and this one just fits,”Mr. Biggs said. “I appreciate that morethan I did with my first wife. I was onthe dating scene for a while and I real-ized how hard it is to find someoneyou’re that compatible with.”

One of Ms. Martin’s co-workersarranged for them to meet, but Ms.Martin, who was about to give up ondating and “get five cats,” got cold feetand backed out the first time they hadplans.

“The first time I didn’t go,” she said.“I was so nervous. The second time, Iwent for it and I’m glad I did.”

Another thing they agree on is thewedding itself. With around 75 guestsinvited to the ceremony at the WilburBoathouse, the event will be slightlylarger than either of their first wed-dings.

They are doing all of the planningthemselves.

“That’s the true test,” Mr. Biggs said, smiling.

Ms. Martin nodded and smiled heragreement.

Both want a nice, but financiallyfeasible occasion.

“We’re not eloping but we’re nothaving a TV wedding, either,” Mr.Biggs said.

He just hopes hurricane season iskind to them.

Everything about Ms. Martin sug-gests she will not be a neurotic bride. She is calm, quiet and agreeable.Maturity, she said, has not dampenedher matrimonial spirits.

“I’m nervous but I know it’s gonnabe okay,” she said. “I’m still excitedand enjoying it more (than the firsttime).”

Between them Mr. Biggs and Ms.Martin have four teenagers. Hisdaughter and her daughter will be

bridesmaids in the wedding.Speaking of teenagers, what about

conflict resolution?“I try to work things out because I

don’t want to lose him,” Ms. Martinsaid. “It’s a lot to lose.”

Mr. Biggs patted her hand andkissed her cheek.

“I think I’m a lot more patient. Istick to the issue I’m upset about,” hesaid. “When I was younger, beingmore immature, I was a lot more inse-cure. Now, I don’t think anything’sgonna be a deal breaker.”

Both agree there haven’t been manyproblems to resolve so far.

“I’ve dated some drama queens,”Mr. Biggs said. “One of the first thingsI noticed is this girl’s the anti-dramaqueen. I thought, this is wonderful, there’s no drama with this one. It’s sorefreshing.”

“It’s like anything…How often areyou good at it the first time?” Mr.Biggs said.

Ms. Patrick said the David’s Bridalclientele is about half and half first-time brides and women getting mar-ried for the second or third time.

Among first timers there is anothersplit.

“Some have been planning theirweddings since they were 12,” shesaid. “They come in with bindersfilled with pictures of dresses andthey know exactly what they want. They’re on top of it. Then there aresome who have never tried on a wed-ding dress before. They’re nervous, but excited.”

She said quite a few of the PortOrange store’s patrons are over 50.Those women tend to steer clear of“big and elaborate” when it comes tothe dress.

David Robinson and Melanie Tolanare really keeping it simple, planning

to elope when they get married. Thecouple got engaged last Valentine’sDay, but they are enjoying a longengagement since they each have twoteenage girls. Mr. Robinson’s daugh-ters attend school in Deltona, and Ms.Tolan’s daughters are in school in PortOrange.

Neither parent wants to uproot thegirls.

“This second time around, we arelooking at the marriage, or the merg-er, more strategically,” Mr. Robinsonsaid. “We have made it this far so weare putting their best interests firstand waiting out the time.”

The couple agreed there are advan-tages and disadvantages to a pro-longed engagement, including acommute for Mr. Robinson who livesin Deltona. Ms. Tolan lives in PortOrange. But they said they want to besmart about things

“If not, we will both be back in thesame boat of being single and neither

of us want that. It is important we seta good example for all of us as a fami-ly so the girls will learn that when theyare in a relationship,” Mr. Robinsonsaid.

Both Ms. Tolan and Mr. Robinsoneach were married at 19.

Ms. Tolan thought her plans wereconcrete until life happened.

“I realized the family values werenot the same as when we first weremarried and got caught up in theexcitement of a big wedding, thedress and dancing, and feeling like Icould take on the world. I was makingadult decisions now, she said.”

Both had big weddings in the past, and agree they were overrated.

“For us, the ceremony will be moreof a formality and something that weagreed to do by ourselves. Once youhave done the big wedding, there isno passion to do another one,” Mr.Robinson said. “There is no rushwhen it is a second time around.”

Q. What are the benefits of hiring awedding planner?

A. Planning a wedding or event istime consuming. This is my full-timejob and my priority is to make plan-ning a couple’s wedding a relaxingtime for them.

All the little details many couplesdon’t think about at first can be over-whelming to them. I know whatneeds to be done, what vendors arebest for them and how to executetheir vision.

It also allows for the friends and

family to relax. This is a big over-looked part for some, who self-planand DIY. Near the last moment offinalization, they realized that theyeither have to set up all of the details,or verify schedules and the relaxingtime leading up to the wedding is a lotof work for those guests who have tostep in and help. This usually hap-pens on the day of with setup or get-ting last minute things done that Iwould have made sure were sched-uled ahead of time. This way mom,dad and family are able to be aroundwith the bride and groom for the fullday, enjoying the day rather thanworking.

Q. What services do you offer? Is it“all or nothing,” or do you offer partial

packages, according to what couplescan afford?

A. We offer everything from e-mailonly planning, setup/breakdown tocomplete planning. We also cus-tomize packages to the couples’needs. This would include from thevery minimal, to the side by sideintensive assistance.

Q. Is hiring a wedding planner morefinancially feasible today than in daysof the past, when it seemed only thevery wealthy could afford this service?

A. I believe it is, yes! I am alwayswilling to work with a couple andtheir price point. I never want to seeor hear of a bride trying to coordinateher wedding day and wonderingwhere this certain vendor is, or arethe candles lit, or should we cut thecake now? Every bride and groomshould have a coordinator so they canenjoy their wedding day and guests.

Q. How did you get into the event-planning field?

A. I have always been one to beorganized and detailed, and I tried tohone in on where I could make thatapply. I’ve always been in the admin-istrative field as an office manager atthe jobs previous to starting my busi-ness. At one point I determined that Ireally loved helping with coordinatingand helping friends with events otherthan weddings. It then blossomedinto a job that I enjoy. I love beingable to help people and seeing themhappy at the end of the night!

Q. For some, the ceremony planningbecomes unbelievably emotional. Doyou have natural counseling skillsthat you have to employ on a regularbasis, or is it mainly good organiza-tional skills that make you successful?

A. Organization is definitely a keytrait. But, you also need to be able tohandle tedious, trying moments withcare and calm. Being able to see thedetails and the big picture at the same

Where do lonely hearts go?Time was when Valentine’s Day was

Facial masks, intensive hair-condi-tioning treatments and vats of Ben &Jerry’s ice cream were the poor, butseemingly only, substitutes manydateless women turned to on Feb. 14.Torturing themselves further with aDVD rental of “Pretty Woman” provedthey had mettle.

time is what, I as a coordinator andplanner, have to do.

Q. On average, how many weddingsor events are you juggling at one time?

A. Anywhere from 5-15 at any onetime. On average about 35 events peryear.

Q. After all of the successes, and pos-sibly some catastrophes, you’ve seenwhat advice would you offer brides, orcouples, who want a beautiful, stress-free wedding?

A. Focus on yourselves as a couple.Don’t get lost in the details of thewedding and trying to please every-one else. This is your day. Enjoy every

moment of this amazing day!Q. Are there differences in attitudes

when it comes to age groups? In otherwords, are first-time brides easier ormore difficult to steer than those whoare older and marrying for the second,or third, time?

A. It depends on the people. Somecouples come to me with a verydetailed vision and exactly what theywant. Others don’t know where tobegin and we start from the begin-ning with them on deciding on col-ors, décor and theme. Of all the cou-ples I’ve worked and met with, theirwedding is so special to them theycan get overwhelmed no matter thestatus.

We need a lover with a slow handLAND LINESA late life love affair for the baby

boom generation may present a com-pletely different set of circumstancesthan one we enjoyed during the blushof youth.

Approached sensibly, a post 60shookup can be extremely rewarding.Let’s face it, senior sex, although veryimportant, is not the end all that itonce was. A baby boom relationshipmust be well-rounded and based onmore than a physical attraction. Lifeteaches us that in order to get love wemust be able to give love. Being morein tune with our mates feelings is nowof the utmost importance.

Of course a late life romancerevolves around more than love andthe bedroom. We now see life as atotal experience. Finding a compati-ble partner is key. At this age many ofus no longer care for dinner at eight. For some of us that is too near bed-time. A perfect partner might be onewho can enjoy the early bird specials

that begins at 4 p.m. That gives ustime to digest before sleep and givesus a chance to save a few bucks. Por-tions at the early bird may be smallerbut just right to allow a dish of icecream in front of the TV. Actually anap after an early dinner is not out ofthe question. If you can find a datewho is in sync, life is good.

Clothing can be difficult to come byas we grow older, but now our perfectoutfit might be on the discount rackand that can be a good thing. Youdon’t hear much about slacks, trunks,or Bermuda shorts these days thoughif you search, you can still find them.

But if you must have a white patentleather belt to go with your whiteshoes you may have to travel all theway to Miami Beach.

We were the first rock’n’roll genera-tion and we still love music, but therap and punk that moves the kidsleaves us cold. We like the Beatles andSimon and Garfunkel and if we wantto get wild on occasion, we will tuneup something like REM. Luckily thereis a wealth of music on the radio thatcaters to our tastes. Roy Orbison,Patsy Cline and Connie Francis are allsoothing to aging ears and Steely Danis still an old friend.

Going out to the movies is a lot likegoing out to dinner. It must happenearly. We hear the stories about $10and $12 movie tickets, but the earlyshow only runs us about five bucks. So a movie at 1 p.m. and dinner at 4p.m. leaves us with time for a niceglass of wine, but we don’t really care

for Merlot. A smooth bottle of Riunitesuits us just fine or dare I say it?Boone’s Farm. Sure, you rememberBoone’s Farm. Cheap and sweet witha sugar content second only to JanisJoplin’s Southern Comfort. Back in theday it sold for 89 cents a bottle and isonly around $2.50 now. A glass ofStrawberry Hill or original Apple stillhits the spot.

Now as the evening draws to a closethere is little pressure on a couple intheir 60s. We know the score. We stillenjoy holding hands and a light kiss isnice. We could just sit in a darkenedroom and listen to Marvin Gaye orEtta James. We may not even need totalk in order to enjoy each other.Along about 8 p.m. we may retire tothe bedroom or maybe even fallasleep on the sofa. It’s so very nice tobe with someone you can love with-out pretext. Someone who has takenthe same journey as yourself.

Ormond Beach’s Family Tradition

Photo by Suzy Kr idnerTom Bertolami, front, and his son, Mario, show off their cappuccinomachine they’ve had for years. Mario keeps the machine running, serv-ing a wonderful drink that goes well with limoncello cake. It’s just onething that make Mario’s Restaurant in Ormond Beach a true supperclub.

MARIOS

When I was growing up my parentstook us to supper clubs for specialoccasions.

We had to use our best manners, our “indoor” voices and not spill onthe white tablecloths. It was a realtreat.

Today, I avoid some local restau-rants because of the large screen TVsblaring a variety of sports — all atonce — and the loud din of patrons’conversations, often on cell phones,or with their dinner companions.

Last week, my husband and I wentto a real treasure, Mario’s Restaurantin Ormond Beach.

We’ve eaten there in the past buthad forgotten in recent years aboutthe great Italian food, attentive serv-ice and low-key ambience.

Since our server, Clint Kaski, sug-gested the special of the night, Chick-en Francaise ($18.95) over a lightlemony risotto, I knew I had to try it.

I like risotto with just about any-thing and this dish was superb.

The chicken was lightly breadedand very tender. And the lemon saucewas just right.

My husband had Seafood Alfredo($22.95). The Alfredo Sauce washomemade and the seafood and fet-tuccine were cooked just right.

He had leftovers; I didn’t leave ascrap.

He also ate the hot-from-the-ovengarlic bread, homemade each day, dipped in a light tomato sauce, whileI was interviewing Mario’s owner,Tom Bertolami, 66.

Mr. Kaski quickly brought water

and offered appetizers. Mario’s spe-cialty appetizer, artichoke stuffedwith breadcrumbs, wasn’t availablethat evening, but the garlic bread withhomemade sauce for dipping wasoutstanding.

A soup specialty of the house isMario’s homemade chicken withfreshly cut vegetables. It’s Tom’sgrandmother, Angela Stellato’s recipe,as is the homemade tomato sauce.

Mario’s has been going for morethan a half century in the same loca-tion.

“Years ago people had martinilunches and went to nightclubs. Wehad lots of nightclubs here but nomore,” said Mr. Bertolami.

“There are only so many peoplegoing out to eat today,” he said, so hekeeps one of the four dining roomsclosed.

On a recent Monday night, usually aslow night in the restaurant business,Mario’s had a steady stream of cus-tomers.

Some, like Dick and Anne Brownand their friends, have been comingfor years.

Dick Brown says when he orderslasagna, he has plenty of leftovers.“It’s the best restaurant for themoney.”

Customers can order ahead andpick up pans of lasagna, chickenmarsala and other main dishes, aswell as salad and bread to serve atparties at home.

The business started in 1956 whenTom’s grandfather, Paul Stellato, bought the former Pat’s Alibi that hadbeen selling package liquor.

“My grandfather was retired andbored out of his mind,” Mr. Bertolamisaid, so he was looking for somethingto do.

When his grandfather, who spoke

broken English, bought it with hisstepson, Vince Aiuto, he wanted asouthern name, not an Italian one,Tom said. So he called it the CorralInn and added sandwiches along withthe packaged liquor.

Its location on U.S. 1 in OrmondBeach made it a popular stop on themain road south to Miami.

Mr. Bertolami said later his grand-father introduced pizza to the area.

“We still sell the same pizza andpackaged liquor,” he said.

What started as a 35-seat bar hasgrown to a 275-seat restaurant.

Last week, guests were being greet-ed at Mario’s, a restaurant of distinc-tion, by Mr. Bertolami, and his son,Mario Bertolami, who stopped in tojoin the interview and pointed out hissiblings and he will eventually takeover the restaurant.

“A lot of our older customers aremoving, and moving on,” Mr. Bertola-mi said. “We are a throwback; a

throwback with character.”“When I got out of the service in the

‘60s, I came right here to work andhave been here ever since,” said Mr.Bertolami. His parents, Ernest andMargaret, bought the restaurant fromPaul Stellato and Vince Aiuto in 1966.Tom’s sister, Jean Schofield, workedalong with him until she retired. Andnow Jean’s daughter, Gina D’Alessio,is the manager.

“We’re working on four genera-tions,” Mr. Bertolami said.

Mario’s has been an institutionknown for its fine Italian cuisine formore than 50 years.

And don’t forget to leave room fordessert. The lemon cake was out-standing.
