Hendry County staff and elected offi cials along with contractors and consultants broke ground for the new terminal building at the LaBelle Municipal Airport on Tuesday, November 21.

The project, which is fully funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), will result in the fi rst newly built Hendry County government building since 2008.

“Hendry County is grateful to the FDOT and Federal Aviation Administration for funding the design, permitting and construc-tion of the LaBelle Airport Terminal,” says Tommy Vaughan, Hendry County Airports Manager. “Those two governmental entities funded 100% of the project costs for the ter-minal.”

County leaders believe that the new and improved facility will lead to an increase in air traffi c and a boost for the local economy.

“Hendry County airports already have the lowest fuel prices in the State of Florida,” stated County Administrator, Charles Chap-

man. “With great restaurants and an up and coming downtown district, the new termi-nal building will bring even more appeal to the City of LaBelle and Hendry County as a whole.”

The small, general aviation airport cur-rently sees an estimated 16,000 take offs and landings and houses 75 aircraft on over 160 acres.

The current terminal is outdated with only 400 square feet of space and is not eas-ily accessible from major roads.

The new terminal building area is 6,240 square feet and will consist of a pilot lounge, shower & restroom, offi ce space, and will eventually include a restaurant.

The design and permitting costs for the new terminal were $266,590, construction costs are approximately $2,691,049, totaling in the amount of $3,190,720.

Contractors for the project are Owen Ames Kimball Company (OAK) and consul-tants are AECOM and Rock Enterprises.

Projected completion date for the termi-nal and infrastructure project is August of 2018.

As he opened the Hendry County Board’s regular meeting the week before Thanksgiv-ing, Chairman Michael Swindle didn’t know beforehand how grateful he’d be to hear from County Tax Collector Pat Langford fi rst, before getting down to the night’s business.

Mr. Langford appeared to deliver, in per-son, an upbeat end-of-the-year report to the county commissioners that brought a smile to every face around the dais, with a big, fat check to top it off that Mr. Swindle would not let out of his sight the rest of the evening.

“I’ve got our excess-fee check to give you this year, for a total of $170,422.21. This is not an ‘I’ in the tax collector, it’s a ‘We,’ and they do a great job, they really do. We’ve got wonder-

ful people. In case you want to know, some of the things we’ve done ... ”

Chairman Swindle answered, “Well, yes, I was going to ask!”

The tax collector then went down his list like Santa checking his lineup of bad and good children for Christmas — except there wasn’t even one bad entry on Mr. Langford’s list.

“Well, one of the good things is the con-cealed weapons (permit) issuance. You know we make $22, every one we do, like on a driver’s license we make $6.25,” he said. “And we’re trying to train more people so that people can come in and just get a license – they don’t have to have an appoint-ment – and word is getting around that you can just show up in LaBelle and get your license, so that’s helping. of the health insurance cost has been in-creased, “they’re just happy to have the type of insurance they have through our county, so there’s no complaining there.”

He said the offi ce also has moved three employees to part-time rather than full-time status and that “we’re keeping our overtime under the allowed limits a lot better than we were.”

Another improvement his offi ce has made is through a practice that Mr. Langford says is good both for taxpayers and county government. “We’re collecting more taxes by sending out letters to people that their property, a certifi cate has been sold on it, and they might lose their property, and we’re wording that in a way that a lot of them are coming and paying their taxes to keep from losing their property,” he explained. Along with that, the tax collector is trying to be of more help to taxpayers who fi nd themselves having a hardship paying their taxes.

“We’re setting up more people with in-stallment plans. If they can’t pay their taxes, we’re letting them know more about the in-stallment plans so they can keep their land. You know, they can’t come up with $700 a year but they can come up with it divided by four during the year a lot better,” Mr. Lang-ford said.

In addition, he’s ramped up oversight to where no purchase is made in the offi ce that he does not sign for, so “we’ve cut down on wastefulness. I do some crazy things like I did in my other business; we use the front page and the back page of paper. That pa-per’s expensive,” he added. “I can’t believe how much it is!”

Chairman Swindle replied, “Yeah, it doesn’t grow on trees,” to chuckles all around the room.”

Finally, Mr. Langford recounted: “Anoth-er big savings is our new software system, eGov, our taxing software system. We ne-gotiated the price; it’s like $25,000 cheaper than the previous provider we had. And, like I said before, our staff is awesome. They’re just wonderful people. [Citizens] tell us all the time how they love coming to Hendry County to ... especially get their tags and titles and concealed-weapons permits. So I can’t say enough about our staff.”

He also buttered up the board a bit: “I appreciate you guys and ladies. What hap-pened during the hurricane was horrible, and you’ve done a great job. I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that.”

Chairman Swindle applauded Mr. Lang-ford’s “forward thinking and proactive lead-ership on your part and your staff ’s part,” adding, about the 45 percent higher check for excess fees, “That’s remarkable. We greatly appreciate what you do there. We appreciate your being here, and doing that.”

Mr. Swindle then moved on with the agenda, but he kept fondling the check. “I’m going to put that big check – I don’t want to put that big check away – right here where I can see it,” he said, grinning.

The LaBelle Middle School Cross Country Team has come a long way since the begin-ning of their 2017 running season in August. Even though Hurricane Irma disrupted their training for a short while, the team did not let it affect them in a negative way. The Cross Country team became a family, pushed each other, and continuously helped, motivated,

and encouraged each other during all of their races.

The boys won the Naples Celtic Invita-tional Boys Race in early October and made it to championships. The team runners have not stopped yet, however; they continue to train for a 5K in February even though their fall season has ended.

This year’s LMS cross country team’s ex-periences and competitions have provided a great stepping stone to LaBelle High School athletics in the future. The Cross Country Team and Coach Judy Morales would like to say a special thank you to all of their spon-sors for their support of the team during this 2017 season.

Can you believe that Thanksgiving has come and gone and now we’re in the full swing of the holiday season?

I remember one year at Christmas time, my Mom had re-married and something that she wanted us to do as a family (to help build a bond between my new step-dad and myself) was to decorate the yard together. If you didn’t know my Mom you don’t fully understand the depth of what ‘decorate the yard’ means, so I’ll elaborate a little.

My Mom was an artist and craftswoman and so she had me draw out my favorite images from a Christmas color-ing book that we’d picked up at the store for

ideas. I drew out the outlines of a group of Dicken’s look-ing Christmas carolers, Santa standing beside a chimney, Rudolph the red nosed rein-deer, and Frosty the Snow-man, all life size illustrations on huge boards of plywood. After I’d fi nished drawing the pictures she and my step-dad cut them out with a saw and then we brought these enor-mous wooden cut-outs into the family room where we all painted them together.

For an entire week af-ter school we’d spend all of

the day light hours outside hanging strings of lights all over the house, wrapping the tree trunks with lights, and basically at-

taching strands of lights to anything that didn’t move. Our cut-outs were positioned throughout the yard and we had big fl ood lights that shone on each one so that they were illuminated during the darkness. It was a glorious sight to behold.

On nights that I didn’t have obligations with my school activities I’d take my kara-oke machine outside and sing holiday songs as the passerbys slowed down to look at our family’s creation. It was such a great thing to do, all of us together. I still remember the fun of the whole process.

As we start to dive into all of the things that we do this time of year I wonder if you have any stand out memories from holidays past that you could share with your family and friends. It’s these special times that stay with us, more than the presents and parties. What are your favorite Holiday memories?

Do you have any stand out Holiday memories?
