We have tried to get a lot of things accomplished but every time we get close to finishing a project, another problem crops up and there has been way more than our share. We will know around the first week of February if we will be receiving a grant for our Service Department Service Officers and if they have a job in the future. We have been trying very hard to get everything lined up for the grant requirements, even looking for a professional grant writer. We are not leaving anything to chance. Only five grants are going to be given out, and I was told at the last meeting one organization could get all five. Amazing. We are getting ready to open a new web site which should be up and running before this article hits the membership. This edition of our paper will be posted on the new web site along with a lot of other good things, like paying for registration and banquet tickets on line. There will also be room for each subor- dinate organization to have pages of their own. The web site is amvetsmichigan.org. Thanks to Post 29, Post 23 and their dona- tions. That’s an increase of 822. However that is still only 91.5 % of the total to be renewed, leaving another 1,143 renewals from 2009 that have so far slipped through the cracks. Of course with additional hard work over the next six months they will all be accounted for. Also let us not forget about the goal of a 5% increase for the 2010 which would bring the total to 10,545. So to meet our goal of 10,545 we have to get out there and renew that 1,143 and find another 215 new members. My point being we cannot allow our membership programs to wind down. Keep after those members that have not renewed, give them a call, write a letter, and send an e-mail, do whatever it takes. I am sure that it is their intention to renew their membership, they just need a gentle reminder. Wow! It sure does not seem like seven months have gone by. Where did the time go? We have tried to get a lot of things accomplished but every time we

get close to finishing a project, another problem crops up and there has been way more than our share.

Also, Post 1957 for their donation to make the computer upgrades. We still have a problem with the membership program

and are looking for a new one or some solution to the current one.

Rob Hosken has been working on the Finance Reports and has just about got it fine tuned. Rob and Glenda have been working together to get payroll up and running so we are now doing payroll at the department instead of paying someone $600 a month to do it for us. I know we will see a new and refreshing finance report at SEC in February.

and even if you do not serve food sign up any way, you might in the future. Plus you will be helping your fellow AMVETS Posts that do serve food and the AMVETS Family groups can use your number so they can get the discounts as well.

I’m very happy to announce that we have a new post chartered in Davison Post 1569 located in the Davison VFW just off the M 15 exit and I-69. Stop in and say hello, they are doing a lot of good things for a new post-even Program Reporting, we have posts a lot older and they do not report. Hopefully we can still teach an old dog new tricks. There’s always hope.

One thing I forgot to mention is Department Executive Direc-tor and our Executive Service Director can no longer be the same person we will have to start paying that salary out of our Depart-ment money. In the past, it was a dual roll and was paid from the appropriation money. That will not be allowed any more .So if we get a grant or not, we are going to be looking for more income to cover executive director and secretary pay. I think it’s a miracle we have lasted this long. Membership, solicitation and donations are what we have been operating off of and trust me that’s not much. Some day the light might come on and posts will realize they should have done something to help. The right thing is just in front of you, all you have to do is do it.

I will be throwing my hat in the ring for Alt NEC at our Con-vention in June. I am asking for your support for that office. God Bless

COMMANDER'S CORNER, cont.

Here it is January, already. I hope that everyone had a good, safe holiday season and that you are well. I know that many of you are working hard out there for veterans and for your communities.

Unfortunately, only 25 posts (37%) are doing program reporting. Those of you who are: keep up the good work! Those of you who are not, we need to talk. Literally, we NEED to talk. Many of you have questions about why program reporting is so important. I’m here for you to try to answer those questions. Call me at 586.493.1115 or e-mail me at [email protected]. If you have concerns about program reporting, the only way those problems can be resolved is to discuss them. And, then it’s you’re responsibility to share that knowledge with your posts.

Program reporting is easier than most other things we do in AMVETS. It’s also one of the most important. Whether you are aware of it or not, your post’s participation in reporting affects AMVETS at all levels. Depending upon your post’s activity level, it will take you only 10 or 15 minutes a month to fill out the report. Heck, I spend more time than that just getting ready to go to the post!

Stand up and be counted, for your post and for your department.

Editor's ColumnBy Executive Director Glenda F. Cogswell

As the commander wrote in his article the State of Michigan is going to a grant system for funding the Service Departments for the organizations.

Hopefully we will be one of those that receive one. It would be a shame to have to close our Service Department doors. I believe that this action will in the long run be detrimental to the veterans of Michigan.

Membership dues have increased for Lifetime Mem-bership. Effective January 1 dues went to $180 with $135 to Department; of which $90 will go to National, the post will retain $45. In 2011 Life Membership Dues will in-crease to $200 with the following distribution National $100, State $50, Post $50 = $200. The final increase will come in 2012 to $250 with the following distribution Na-tional $125, State $62.50, Post $62.50 = $250. Mem-bership received with less than the amount due will be returned to the post.

Thank You AMVETS Service Department

By Larry Hebert

I wish to thank the AMVETS Service Department; they were the greatest help that a veteran can get to represent a veteran (myself)

in dealing with the Veterans Administration in my compensation/disability case.

They went above and beyond the call of duty assisting me with my claim. Other organizations prior to my switching to the AMVETS held my Power of Attorney and they did nothing for me. They didn’t call me back when I called them or they rarely called me back.

The AMVETS Service Department always called me back and they did what they said they would do. No Promises, just results. I have dealt with the VA system since 1982, yes 22 years! Thank you to all off the AMVETS Service Officers.

AMVETS RidersBy Josh Feltman

My Name is Josh Feltman, I am the current Department of Michigan AMVETS Riders President. I am terrible with names, I don’t always remember everything I am

supposed to do, and in the past five years I have went from someone that walked into an AMVETS to buy a flag to remember my Grandfather, to the first Department leader for the Riders in Michigan. The last two years have been very interesting for me and the rest of our young Riders chapters. Arguments, parties, meetings, funerals, and many, many drinks later we are all still brothers and sisters. This will be my point for the remainder of my article. Why do you choose to come to your local AMVETS Post? Cheap drinks, friends, bingo, and many other reasons are always there. How often do you attend a meeting? How often to you assist your post with a fundraiser? Do you treat the AMVETS like any other bar you attend? I really hope that you choose to make the AMVETS more like your family than your bar.

Over the course of the last few years I have had the opportunity to meet some great people affiliated with the AMVETS. I have raised funds for many veterans’ organizations, and I have enjoyed being a Son of AMVETS. I am proud to tell anyone why I wear my vest and I tell anyone who will listen about my post. 203,000 of the 785,000 reported by Riders Chapters came out of Michigan with the lion share coming from Mt. Clemens chapter 29, Now isn’t that something to be very proud of? We have a great group of dedicated individuals here in Michigan and it truely shows to all that care. I hope that you choose 2010 to become an active member of the AMVETS. The need continues to grow for our veterans and our members. I only hope that we can continue to rise to the occasion and keep our veterans and communities proud to say that they are from Michigan. I will end with this thought, wear your AMVETS colors with pride, the whole world is looking for leaders right now. If someone with no experience can be looked upon as a leader in four years, you most certainly will be looked upon as the same.

Burial in a national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces and veterans who have met minimum active service

duty requirements and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Their spouse, widow or widower, minor children, and, under certain conditions, unmarried adult children, may also be eligible for burial. Eligible spouses and children may be buried, even if they predecease the veteran. Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty or while performing training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial.

• Gravesites in Department of Veterans Af-fairs (VA) national cemeteries cannot be reserved in advance. However, families are encouraged to prepare in advance by discussing cemetery options and setting aside copies of any discharge docu-ments.

• VA will provide—at no cost to the veteran’s family—a gravesite, headstone or marker, Presi-dential Memorial Certificate, U.S. flag, perpetual care of the gravesite and will open and close the grave. Fees for services provided by funeral direc-tors and other related costs must be paid for by the veteran's family.

• VA's Veterans Benefits Administration pays a burial and plot allowance for those veterans eli-gible by law. For information, please contact the nearest VA regional office at 1-800-827-1000.

• To establish eligibility for burial in a VA na-tional cemetery, the family should provide: the veteran's discharge document; report of casualty; or the veteran's full name; military rank; branch of service; dates of entry and discharge; serial, social security, and/or VA claim numbers; date and place of birth; and date of death.

• If the discharge document is not available, a copy may be obtained from the National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records Of-fice, 9700 Page Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63132-5100. This should be done prior to the time of need.

• At the time of need, a funeral director or the next of kin should contact the national cemetery where burial is desired.

• The same procedures should be followed to determine the eligibility of a veteran's spouse or dependent. In most cases, one gravesite is pro-

vided for the burial of all eligible family members, marked by a single headstone or marker. When both spouses are veterans, two gravesites and two head-stones or markers may be provided, if requested.

• The Department of Defense (DOD) is respon-sible for providing military funeral honors. The DOD program “Honoring Those Who Served” calls for funeral directors to request military funer-al honors on behalf of the veteran’s family.

Veterans’ organizations may assist in the provision

of military funeral honors.

• Formal funeral services are not held at nation-al cemeteries, but a final committal service may be performed at the cemetery. For safety reasons, these services are held in committal shelters locat-ed away from the gravesite.

Burial will take place following the commit-tal service. Immediate family members may be allowed to view the actual burial only if arrange-

ments have been made in advance with the cem-etery director.

• National cemeteries do not usually conduct burials on weekends or federal holidays. However, weekend callers may schedule burials for the up-coming week.

• Floral arrangements may accompany the cas-ket or urn and will be placed on the grave after burial.

I apoligize for not getting an article in the last newsletter. One of my favorite sayings is “To err is human but to really foul things up requires electronics” That is what happened to me. I have been having

problems with my computer on and off. I somehow picked up a super virus and now I am sitting and waiting for my computer to be repaired. I have borrowed one to check my e-mails and to write my articles.

Just a reminder to all the Sack units, as you may remember, we have changed our state officer elections to be held at Convention instead of Fall Conference. Your unit must have its election prior to Convention. You can turn in your forms to feathers at Convention.

I would like to visit your units, but I need to know when you have your scrimmages. If you can give me as much notice as possible I would appreciate it.

WILL NOT appear until the following issue. If you are having an event that you want in the paper ensure that the information is received in time for the appropriate issue before your event.

DO make sure the pictures are clear and well-contrasted. Fuzzy or dark pictures won’t reproduce well. Black and white are the best, but color will do if contrasted well.

DO send in articles. Posts and districts have something newsworthy going on. Why not share it with the rest of the department? If you send pictures make sure you have an article for them. I will not write your article and the pictures will not appear in the paper.

DO send credits with your articles. Also send credits for articles from other

publications and permission to reprint if nec-essary.

DO write post numbers on the back of each picture so they can be returned to you.

DO refer to an individual as an AMVET.The organization is AMVETS.

DO refer to the AMVETS Auxiliary as the “AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary.”

DO type the article. You’re the only person who can read your writing.

DON’T use all caps when typing.

DON’T EMBED YOUR PHOTOS IN A WORD DOCUMENT

DON’T tape pictures to articles. Paper clip them to the article. We have to be able to scan the pictures to put them in the paper. This can’t be done if pictures are taped to the article and the article gets torn when we try to remove the pictures.

DON’T print or type your captions on the back of photos. Ink smears!

DON’T think we’re being too tough! We just want to make sure the paper is

done right.

THIS IS YOUR PAPER IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE CONTENT THEN YOU SHOULD SUBMIT ARTICLES FOR IT.

In an effort to make the Michigan AMVET News a true newspaper and not a pictorial quarterly, the publica-tions committee is asking all contribu-tors to consider writing more articles and submitting fewer pictures. The old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” is only true if everyone knows what the picture relates to. Keep in mind the four Ws:

Who, Where When, WhatThis will make your articles easier

to write.Articles should normally be 300 –

500 words and may be accompanied by one or two pictures for each article.

By increasing the number of writ-ten articles, we can increase the read-ing time of the paper vastly and spur members’ interest in what’s going on around the state.

AMVETS and Auxiliary from Post #9 have been busy since the last time we shared news.

Macomb County held their Annual 100 Deserving Volunteers Awards for the year, nominations are from schools, churches,

and organizations. Auxiliary # 9 submitted member Alice Swiatkowski for nomination in the name of AMVETS Auxiliary Volunteer of the year in Macomb County. We are proud to say that she won and was honored with a certificate and luncheon with all the other winners.

Alice is our Scholarship Chairman and Chaplain of our local. She is also a regular scheduled volunteer at John Dingell VAMC and in June received her 500 hour hospital bar. There is no job Alice doesn’t vol-unteer for a very deserving award for her. Congratu-lations Alice we are proud of you.

AMVETS ANNUAL PICNIC

AMVETS 9 Annual picnic brought friends together for a fun afternoon, weather was sunny and warm not like last year that

brought rain all day and cold. Al Kaiser was at the Centerline park bright and early when the sun rose to get a favorite spot under the trees. AMVETS Amy Moreno, Sue Dawson and Al Kaiser did the great grilling of hamburgers and hot dogs. Amy and Sue outdid themselves with salads, fruit ka-bobs, desserts and of course Commander Gene Lemieux brought that great corn. Everyone could not complain about

being hungry with the many snacks that floated around too. Laura Lesniak from the Auxiliary brought her famous race game, but for the summer she brought tulips. Winners were happy with their tulips corning in first, and the other half went into the Auxiliary working fund. As usual good times come to an end to quickly, the next get together will be the Christmas party.

Post News

Post 27 - Warren

At the 2009 AMVETS National Convention, two young Americans from Michigan placed in the National A.A.D.A.A. Program. Since the Department of Michigan is no longer

conducting an A.A.D.A.A. program, these two first place Post 27 entries were submitted directly to National Headquarters.

Receiving third place in the National 9th-12th grade category was Robert Buchanan. Robert is a student at De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren. His entry was awarded with a $50 gift card and a certificate.

Phillip Gawel is a student at Boulan Park Middle School in the Troy School District. His entry received a second place in the National 6th-8th grade category. He was awarded with a $75 gift card and a certifi-cate.

The journey to the National A.A.D.A.A. Program for Robert’s and Phillip’s entries began at a local program sponsored by Post 27. Several

students had been contacted and encouraged to submit entries to the Post’s program. Those entries were then judged in order to determine the first, second, and third place winners. Because no other Post in Michigan was conducting an A.A.D.A.A. Program, Post 27’s first place A.A.D.A.A. entries were sent directly to National Headquarters for the national program. Had there been entries from other Posts in Michigan, then another level of judging would have been needed to determine the overall first place winners for submission to the national program.

The theme for the 2010 program is “There Is No Use for Drug Abuse.” Perhaps your District, Post, Auxiliary, Squadron, or Sack would like to similarly sponsor students for the coming year’s program. If so, now would be the time to act. Post 27 will be glad to assist. For more information, materials, or assistance regarding possibly setting up your own A.A.D.A.A. Program, contact Cmdr. Frank Rusak, Adj. Ed Florence, or me.

Post 72 - New HavenBy Jim May, Sr.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 2009 was veterans day. Duncan Sullivan Post 72’s AMVETS, Sons and Auxiliary members met at he AMVETS Memorial within the New Have Cemetery. The

service opened with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Sopfe read an article detailing the role that the veteran has played in securing the freedom that we all enjoy today. Post Chaplain Roy King offered a closing prayer. We then retired to the post for a light lunch for all those that attended.

On December 18, we held our annual Christmas Wrapping Party. Com-mander Dave Sopfe wishes to thank all who helped. A great meal was served afterwards for all of the workers.

On December 19, Santa arrived at Post 72 via the New Haven Fire Truck

to the joy of 69 members and community children. Along with the gifts the children were treated to, soft drinks, chips, hot dogs, and candy. Heartfelt thanks to all who donated to make this special for the kids.

December 20th we were very happy to give 25 very large food baskets to

include turkeys and all the trimmings to the area needy. A special thanks to our community and citizens who contributed in making a special day for the 25 families, and thanks to our members for sorting, packing, and distributing the baskets.

“We contact the school, post office and (AM-

VETS) members, and they kind of know who the needy families are in Mesick, Buckley, Yuma and Harrietta,” said Jerry Lesney, first vice com-mander of Mesick AMVETS.

“We’ve been doing this for at least 20years with the money we raise from our white clover sales in October.”

This year, the AMVETS raised about $1,200, which Lesney said is “pretty typical.” The AM-VETS usually don’t raise enough money during the white clover sale to .cover the local need, so the post typically donates funds.

The Mesick AMVETS go shopping for non-perishable foods and buy perishable food gift certificates; the Sons of AMVETS donate tur-keys and hams; the AMVETS ladies bring in toi-letries; and a pie company gives pies.

On Monday, the AMVETS members stuffed the boxes, and they delivered the packages on Tuesday.

Lesney said to the Mesick AMVETS, the sur-rounding communities are a family to the group.

“It doesn’t make a difference whether they’re a civilian or veteran, we really work together pretty good to help each other out,” Lesney said. With about 530 members from Mesick, Har-rietta, Cadillac, Traverse City and beyond, the Mesick AMVETS post is the second largest post in the state; however, hardly any people come to meetings these days, according to Ron Craun, member and former commander of the Mesick

AMVETS Post No. 120.“I hope more people take an interest in what

we’re doing down here,” Craun said. “I hope more people help us out volunteering.” Craun said the post needs help preparing for Thursday’s Steak dinners and Fridays chicken and fish din-ners; the group needs cooks and “could always use volunteers” Craun added. Volunteers don’t have to be veterans.

Craun said the group does good by holding benefits, helping members who can’t pay bills, giving six scholarships to local students per year and holding events to raise money for the Wertz Warriors’ Special Olympics.

Ron Case, a Mesick AMVETS Post 120 member was busy at post Monday as he placed food and hygienic products in boxes for 43 local families. The post found needy families in Mesick, Buckley, Yuma and Harrietta through the school, is one of the many community services.

AUXILIARY PRESIDENTS TESTIMONIALDINNER

My day began, leaving my home at 7:00 a.m., arriving at the Detroit Veterans Center, to Transport the homeless veterans to attend

a Veteran Day Mass, at St Anselm Church. A special invitation by St Anselm Student Council to attend mass, followed by a reception, to honor the veterans, for their

dedication and service to our country. Their visit was a learning experience enjoyed by all, asking questions, thanking them for their courage and freedom and serving our country. This truly was a patriotic day, What a sight to see, how grateful and proud the students were, learning the meaning of a veteran.

We have breakfast at Mc-Donalds, instead of I-Hop due to time schedule, before we headed to Dearborn Heights City Hall for their annual Veteran Day Service. The annual Veteran Day Service honors all members of the Armed Forces, with special remembrance to those who lost their lives in the line of service. Mayor Dan Paletko paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country. We will always be indebted to those who

answer the call of service to their country, both past and pres-ent. Thanks to the selfless com-mitment and bravery of these heroes, we can all enjoy the many freedoms that we take for granted. Mr. Edward Florence enlightened us with his speech. After the service, all were invit-ed to Dearborn Heights Library, to a light lunch. We distributed Veterans Day letters, personal-ized cards and tray favors, made by St Anselm Youth Group. They were also made by Kin-loch, Q.W. Holmes, St Anselm, St Linus and Highview Elemen-tary School children, which were distributed throughout the VA Medical Center find the Detroi Veteran Center.

Our next stop, we visit Mrs. Susan Krupa, second grade classroom, at Kinloch Elemen-tary School. The children were so excited, filled with questions and jokes for the veterans.

The veterans distribute nags and pins to the students and sang patriotic songs. All enjoyed each other company and the veterans will be returning to read books and tell stories.

We settle down for dinner at the Texas Roadhouse, before heading back to the center.

The homeless veterans en-joyed the students’ enthusiasm and their patriotic pride. Since their visit, they have correspon-dence and have schedule a tour to the VAMC und will be singing Christmas carols.

AuxILIARy NEWSAUXILIARY CONVENTION NEWS

By Mary Ann Leach

As I sit here looking out my window at mounds of snow and trying to keep warm, it is hard to imagine in just a few short months we will be at our annual

convention, however, it is time to start thinking about convention and

all we need to do to prepare for it. Convention is the time we make any changes needed for a smoother running

Department, elect our leaders for the coming year, wait in anticipation for awards day (don’t forget how important our reporting is for Veteran funding), and meet our old friends and hopefully make new ones.

Our convention is being held at Auburn Hills Marriott at Centerpoint

3600 Centerpoint Parkway, PontiacReservations may be made by calling

1-800-228-9290 or 248-253-9800Room rates are $81 per night

plus a total tax of 13%Banquet ticket price is $35

Convention dates are June 24-27

Pre-registration forms will be sent to each local auxiliary in the March mailing. Pre-registration is $10 and registration at the door is $15. Cutoff date for pre-registration is 15 days prior to the convention date. I encourage you to pre-register as you will then be assured of a convention book. Our Sec-retary only makes a limited number of additional books due to the cost. Also, registration is much faster for those who pre-register.

It would be greatly appreciated if each auxiliary could do-nate 2 or 3 attendance prizes.

Also, a monetary donation from your local will be appre-ciated as we honor our Department President for her year of service to our Department.

I look forward to seeing everyone in June. Any further information will be coming out in our monthly newsletter which is sent to each local President and/or Secretary.

AUXILIARY CONVENTION TEE SHIRT DAY

President Kathy has declared we will have tee-shirt day on Saturday of convention. All information regarding size, cost and color was sent out to each Local Auxiliary

in the January monthly newsletterNew this year is each person can choose from 30 different

shirt colors. The newsletter included a color chart and order form.

All profits made from the sale of the shirts will be given to our Ways & Means Chairperson to help make budget.

Please contact your Local President for all information and an order form. Let’s all help ways & means with the huge task of making budget this year.

Sons of AMVETS Department of Michigan From the Office of Sons of AMVETS Commander

Greetings from the Sons of AMVETS Department of Michigan. I truly hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas and as we look forward to the New Year, we need to concentrate on making the AMVETS Family second to none in service to our Veterans and our communities. Many of us have joined the AMVETS Family to have a place where we can meet our friends and drink for a reasonable price, but we are much more than that. Across the State of Michigan, as well as across this Great Nation, the AMVETS Family has made a difference in the lives of our Veterans and our communities. However a great deal of our membership does not know what can be done to help. As our membership continues to grow it is important that we continue to teach any of our new members what they need to learn about the AMVETS Family, who we are, what we stand for, and how they can help. We also need to remind those of us who have become complacent that service to our Veterans and our communities should be necessary as well as gratifying to our heart and soul. We all volunteer our time, helping a neighbor, working a dinner at your Post, visiting a friend in the hospital etc. I would like to encourage each Squadron to file Project Reports. This only takes a few minutes each month and they make a huge impact on the AMVETS Family. If each Squadron will send in Project Reports every month the Sons of AMVETS Department of Michigan could be second to none in the nation. My Testimonial Dinner will be held on April 10, 2010 at the Centennial Country Club in Grand Rapids. For tickets and information Contact Sandi Beedon at 616-719-2294 or you can e-mail at [email protected]. Please remember that I or my officers are here to assist you or you Post whenever it may be needed if you have any questions, comments or concerns feel free to call. Yours in Service to our Veterans
