Health Insurance Denial of DoctorOrdered Test or Treatment

So, your doctor ordered a test or treatment and your insurance company denied it. That is a typical cost saving method.

Here is what you can do:1. Call the insurance company and tell them you want to

speak with the “HIPPA Compliance/ Privacy Officer”. By federal law they have to have one.

2. Then ask them for the NAMES & CREDENTIALS of every person accessing your record to make that decision of denial. By law, you have a right to that information.

3. They will almost always reverse the decision very shortly rather than admit that the committee is made of low paid, high school graduates, looking at “criteria words”, making the decision to deny your care. Even in the rare case it is made by medical personnel, it is unlikely that it is made by a board certified doctor in that specialty and they do not want you to know this.

4. After taking these steps, any refusal should be reported to the US Office of Civil Rights (OCR.gov) as a HIPPA violation.

- Ginny Martikes, RN

Hello summer. Neighbors are outside, kids are running around, lawnmowers are humming and bike riders whiz by – community safety becomes even more important. Please slow down when driving and obey the 25 mile an hour speed limit. Watch for the stop signs and use the gates properly. Keep your dogs on leash and please clean up after them.

On another note, our library room has been organized; all hard covered books are on the shelves alphabetically by the author’s last name. Please borrow and return books by putting them on the correct shelf. It is reopened for donations of current hardcover books. Next month we will be doing a feature on ‘Summer Reading’.

In addition to reading the Breeze Way, I’d like to mention a few ways to find out information about our community:1. Toll website -www.tollbrothers.com/luxury-homes has

sales information, a map of the community and a virtual tour of the community

2. First residential website-www.fsresdiential/new-jersey/ Go to homeowners, Find my Community, enter our zip code. This website has great potential. As of today, it is too confusing to get on, and only has the same calendar items that are on the back of this newsletter and some financial information. Once someone populates the website with all the information in the design, it will be really helpful

3. The Breeze Way web site– www.BreezeWayLtr.com– has back copies of the newsletter and photos from social events in our communityAnd if you are in the clubhouse and want internet

connection, the Seabreeze site SEABREEZE G passcode is 5555555555 ( type in 10 5’s )

Lastly, please join the Breeze Way staff when we host an Ice Cream Day on July 23rd.

All the Best,Marie Kessel

Photo GroupCalling all photographers...Sea Breeze's newest group, has recently started to meet at the Club House. Hosted by

neighbor Roy Winograd, the club is unlike traditional photo clubs. According to Roy, "our intention is not to compete with each other to see who can take the best photo, but rather it's a casual get-together for those who want to talk photography, improve their camera handling skills, pick up some photo tips or just wish to view photos."

Some of the topics include composition techniques, controlling light, lenses and filters, post processing, displaying photos etc. Local photo trips are also in the works. Roy plans on ending each session with a short video introducing the group to successful photographers, each with a unique style.

Even though our focus is on photography basics, all are welcome. The Photo Group will be meeting again monthly, starting in September.

Henry Szczepanek tosses the bocce ball while Chris Buro, Sue Szczepanek and Sue Canonico admire his form

Bocce BallBocce ball is played using a small pallino as the target, thrown within a

specific range marked on the court. Then the players “bowl” with the bocce balls, attempting to get close to the pallino. A game can be played with just two players, or two teams of two, three or four players.

The Sea Breeze lanes are fun and challenging, offering little “hills and valleys” to make the toss unpredictable. The laughter has been heard all the way on Dunberry, as the players attempt to knock their opponents away from the pallino.

Bocce is played Monday evenings at 6:30. You can play as long as you wish, but usually after 1 ½ - 2 hours, the games have finished. The teams are selected randomly, so no regular commitment is required. This is low impact, but there is bending involved (similar to bowling). Come and join the fun on Mondays – weather permitting. The Novel Bunch

The Novel Bunch, the Sea Breeze book club, has been active for the past 5 years. The attendees change from month to month – many regulars and others who attend when they can. But at each month’s meeting a lot of energy and enthusiasm is generated by the group. We all feel comfortable expressing our opinions about the book’s topic.

For all of this time, Ruthann Cherence has been the leader. Book titles are often suggested by a member, but Ruthann has done an outstanding job selecting the book that will provide good discussion points. Often the books generate personal stories and memories – some funny, some bringing us to a few tears. All of this is done with great sensitivity for each other.

June is the anniversary month of the start of The Novel Bunch. This year, as is typical, the members brought their favorite drink and snacks and after the book discussion, we stayed to enjoy the summer evening and each other’s company. This year’s June meeting was an added celebration to thank Ruthann for her years of dedication and to welcome Marilyn Winograd as our new leader. Marilyn has shown such thoughtful insight into the books we read and is sure to provide excellent leadership. She already has a list of books, suggested by members, to kick off year six.

Pictured are Marilyn Winograd, new Chair, and Ruthann Cherence, outgoing Chair of the Novel Bunch.

Destination Iceland

Iceland is surging in popularity. Last year, Reykjavik Iceland had soared from #17 to #3 as the most popular destination for US travelers, right up there with London and Paris. We find that there are many flights from the US to Iceland, making it more accessible and reasonably priced. What is the attraction to Iceland?

• Unusual Geography – The land is full of geysers and volcanoes, resulting in some of the eeriest rock formations and black sand beaches you will ever see.

• Amazing Road Trips – There are well maintained roads to explore Iceland’s natural landscape, it’s easy to get around.• Perfect for Cycling and Horseback Riding – There are great bike trails. Horses are very popular in Iceland and are

the best way to get around.• Scuba Diving – You can dive between two continents: between North America and the Eurasian Tectonic Plates.

The lake is filled with glacier runoff water with excellent visibility of over 250 feet with interesting drop offs and rock formations under water.

• Volcanoes – Descend into a volcano and once inside you have about an hour to roam around.• Game of Thrones Fan? You’ll recognize many areas of Iceland where it was filmed, as well as some Star Wars

movies, etc.• Family Friendly – Campsites and hotels are geared for families. While some of the landscapes may not be, the

mythical stories, elves and trolls will keep the kids (and adults) enthralled.• Hot Springs – The Blue Lagoon and other local geothermic hot pools are around the countryside and are an amazing

experience to take part in.• Iceland Culture – Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland and is full of cultural galleries, theaters, museums and

public gardens. There are 40 annual festivals and events and hotspots for local craft beers.• Ice Caves – In the Langjokull Glacier, there is a tunnel that burrows deep into the ice that you could explore.• Interesting Food – Anyone up for fermented shark or

smoked puffin? These dishes are indigenous to this region, but you can also find meal options you are familiar with.

• Excellent Bird, Whale and Puffin Watching – Bring your binoculars and cameras.

• Northern Lights – One of the most popular reasons for visiting Iceland is to view the Northern Lights. Best viewing times are September through April when the darkness of the night is longer with better options to view them.

As you can see, Iceland isn’t just about the Northern Lights, there is so much to experience and explore. Tired of going to the same place year after year on vacation? Add Iceland to your bucket list.

Bits and BytesRobocalls - Think

Before You Press or SpeakBy Bob Sherman

Ever get a phone call that goes something like this?

Hello you have won a trip to the Bahamas. We are calling about your current credit card. This is Tom from customer service, can you hear me?How could I have won a trip in a contest I never entered?

If this is really about my “current credit card” how come you don’t know the specific card you are calling about and why would somebody from customer service be calling me just to find out if I can hear them? Common topics for these scams include credit card rate reductions, IRS taxes, extended warranties, Microsoft tech support, medical alerts and others that switch you to a number in a foreign country where they will keep you on the phone to run up a big phone bill. According to the YouMail National Robocall Index there are over 4 billion robocalls made in the US per month. While most robocalls to cell phones are illegal, many originate from overseas where they are out of the reach of US law enforcement.

One of the “blessings” of the wonderful improvements we have had in technology is that computers can be programmed to make millions of calls at an amazing speed for practically nothing. Calls can come from anywhere in the world and “spoof” your Caller ID so you will answer, believing the call is from a neighbor or local business. Some even pique your curiosity by showing your own phone number. All a fraudster needs to start a robocall campaign is a computer with the proper software, a list of active phone numbers (even random ones will do) and an internet connection. Some of these programs use “imitation of life” software to trick you into believing that you are actually interacting with a real person. You might hear coughing,

laughing and other background noises. They may also use artificial intelligence so it may appear that the robot is interacting with you in a real-time conversation.

So what do you do if you get such a call? First of all, don’t answer if you do not recognize the number. Let it go to voicemail as anyone trying to reach you for a legitimate reason will leave a message. Some cell phones can be programmed so they don’t ring if the number is anonymous or if it is not in your address book. If you do pick it up don’t press any buttons. Pressing buttons shows that a live person answered the phone and this only encourages them to call again. You should also avoid saying anything. The newest scam going around is “Can You Hear Me Now?” It will start with something like “This is Bob from customer service, can you hear me?” Of course you can hear them so you say yes. They record your reply and later use your voice signature to play a recording proving that you agreed to pay for goods or services.

There are ways you can use technology to limit these calls. Some newer phones automatically identify possible spam by giving you a warning or turning the screen red. Check with your wireless carrier to see if they offer an optional service that will screen your calls. There are also several apps available for free and others for a small monthly fee which will block known or suspected scams or can identify numbers that are hidden on purpose. Popular apps that will block the calls include Truecaller, RoboKiller, Mr. Number, YouMail, Nomorobo, and HiYa. Robokiller uses Answer Bots to frustrate robocallers by keeping them on the line for hours. If you subscribe to YouMail a suspected robocaller will receive a message that your number is out of service.

Most of these scams are easy to spot, but how do you stop these annoying phone calls from happening. First of all, register your phone number on the FCC National Do Not Call Registry. If you have not already done so you can register online at www.donotcall.gov. You can report spam text messages to 7726 (SPAM), a free text exchange with your wireless provider.

You can help combat this problem by filing an online complaint about these calls with the FTC or FCC. The more complaints they receive about a particular caller, the more likely they are to investigate and shut them down. You should also be careful about giving your phone number to any business without understanding their privacy policy with regard to sharing your contact information. You may be unwittingly providing opt-in consent to receive calls. Also, check your social media accounts and delete your phone number as these services are often used to put together a list of prospects and find out more about you. You would be surprised at what comes up simply by typing your phone number in a Google search. Very scary.

Bytes and Bites

Personal Privacy & Security in the CyberageRecently Nick Spaltro gave a presentation on our Personal Privacy and Security at the Club house.

This was an information-packed presentation that hit home. How many of us went home that night to check our Facebook and iPhone settings? And don’t forget about Xfinity.

Nick began with background information on the digital age, privacy and cybersecurity. An interesting video by IBM showed how easily our identity can be stolen while standing in line at a public place.

The Cloud – how secure is this? Hackers can access all of our data and wreak havoc on our personal information. But even closer to home: how often are we asked for personal information by our insurance company, our doctors, our banks? Then there is the personal information we voluntarily provide – Facebook, Instagram, on-line shopping, and our casino cards. We trust that this data is kept secure. There are information brokers whose job it is to collect personal data on us and distribute it to other agencies. We have all searched for an item on-line, for example at Home Depot. Those with Facebook will have that item pop up on their page – we are linked to many sources.

Nick provided many examples that we can control every day. Shred any mail that has your name and address (or any other personal information on it). Remove or destroy your personal information on empty prescription bottles. He also suggested regularly “Googling” your name to see what information is public. Be aware that your car, computer and voice assistant are “listening”. E-Z Pass tracks your travel; your phone’s GPS tracks you to within feet of your location.

Here are a few more of Nick’s practical tips to protect your data and identity:

• Consider using a separate computer for banking and personal use (one that’s not used for browsing) • Opt out of junk mail from banks, credit cards, etc. • Send a letter to credit reporting bureaus to opt out of

receiving credit card, bank and brokerage offers. • Request redaction of certain information from property

records by completing an ‘OPRA Redaction Form’ on the county website

• Avoid clicking on links, pictures and videos in chain emails

• Check Smartphone App and Social Media privacy settings

• Consider purchasing a WEB MESH router for improved security and coverage in your home; prevent interference from neighboring WIFI.

Contact Comcast about your Internet Modem and Wi-Fi and ask for help with:• Changing the password for ADMIN access on modem • Changing Wi-Fi passwords from the default • Removing the Xfinity hotspot on your modem• Changing your firewall setting

Nick would be willing to answer any specific questions you may have concerning this topic. Let Nick know if you missed this presentation and would like him to repeat it or if you did attend, provide feedback. Contact him at: [email protected].

LOCAL ICE CREAM PARLORSCompiled by Trish Gutwein

With the warm weather in season, it’s time for ice cream runs. Yes, get in your car and go for a ride. There are several ice cream parlors close by and all are worth a little time on the road.

All of the homemade ice cream parlors listed below are on Route 9, with many flavors and all kinds of toppings. They all also make specialty ordered ice cream cakes and/or gift baskets and have plenty of parking available. Each parlor has a unique attraction.

This converted house, has an easy handicap ramp to its entrance with parking in the back. There is a red/orange monster truck on Rt. 9 with the name of the store. There is also an antique tractor on the side street. Specialty ice creams are created … black pepper or apple pie, pineapple habanero, pumpkin spice, nutella, & dunkaroo ice cream flavors. And milk shakes, flying saucers, chipwiches, coffee and espresso drinks, hot chocolate and mini donuts are part of the menu. They even have a hot Belgian waffle sundae. One can feel as ice cream would by sitting in the ice cream cone seats. There is also outside seating. People talk about the ‘pup’ cup and the reasonable prices.

In addition to the ice cream, she offers the best the boardwalk has to offer: a room with homemade chocolate and fudge, candy apples, salt water taffy and fresh squeezed lemonade. There are also baked goods from Wemrock (Freehold) and Mueller’s (Bayhead). On Friday’s, 6 – 9 pm, Freckles the Clown is available for face painting and fun with balloons.

Suff ering From Knee Pain? Time to Try this SAFE, Non-Invasive Way to Get Your Life Back!

All natural, safe, and eff ective treatment off ered at Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation proven to relieve knee pain as fast as possible… no surgery, no steroids, no prescription drugs.

Knee Pain can be debilitating and life-altering.

But it doesn’t have to be!Knee problems can leave you in unbearable pain, unable to enjoy the same activities you used to, and even immobile in some cases. What if you didn’t have to live in pain? How diff erent would your life be if you weren’t bound by the limitations that come with knee pain? After nearly 20 years in service and thousands of patients treated, the doctors at Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation (MPR) have found the special formula: knee problems and the pain that ensues cannot be resolved with a one-dimensional treatment. Which is why these doctors combine multiple high-tech modalities to deliver patients the remedy they’ve been searching for.Call today to schedule a FREE consultation ($245 value) – 732-345-1377

Advanced, all natural technologies without going

under the knifeHow does it work? The medical doctors at Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation pay special attention to each individual patient in a quality controlled environment. These highly qualifi ed medical doctors use x-ray analysis plus video fl uoroscopy to pinpoint your problem areas with extreme accuracy. They then inject a cushioning gel, called a viscosupplement, and the healing process begins. Watch as your knee shows up on the screen and the viscosupplement begins to work right before your eyes! This holistic gel injection is often compared to getting a routine shot at the doctor’s offi ce. Finished before you know it, and then you’re on your way to healing!

Spotlight on the technology: A closer look

K Laser Therapy© is used to supplement the injections as a way of expediting the healing process. The laser interacts with the cells to increase cellular energy so that these cells can begin rebuilding tissue in the damaged area. Laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the knee. You will feel the benefi cial eff ects, as the laser treatment reduces infl ammation, stiff ness, and pain.To accelerate your healing even further and faster, try Power Plate© technology to complement your treatment. Power Plates© send vibrations through the body that increase blood fl ow, reducing infl ammation and accelerating the body’s healing process. Best of all, Power Plates are housed under the same roof as all these other advanced technologies at Monmouth Pain & Rehabilitation, so you can get your full treatment course in one convenient location.

Covered by most insurances, including Medicare

Who is a good candidate for this treatment?

Do you wake up with knee pain? Does your knee pain keep your from certain activities? Have you been told you need a knee replacement? Are you active and sometimes suff er from sore knees? Do you take medications for knee pain? Do you have diffi culty going up and down stairs due to knee pain? Are you considering surgery? Have you tried everything to get rid of knee pain with no success? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are ready to experience the relief and healing found with the knee program at MONMOUTH PAIN & REHABILITATION.

Ask the Dietician

Question: What constitutes a balanced meal?

The short answer is that each meal should be represented by each of the food groups. The long answer is:

Visualize your plate- ½ of plate: fruit and/or vegetables. Fresh /seasonal is best but have you checked out the frozen fruits and even frozen avocado?¼ of plate: proteins, meat/fish/beans/egg/dairy¼ of plate: starch, preferably whole grain based. Try to have at least 80% of the time over the course of a day. Whole wheat, quinoa, barley, brown rice are some options. Fats - MEASURED, not eliminated. Use avocado and avocado oil, olive oil, whipped butter or margarines. Use herbs to add flavor and pleasure instead of added salts. Sounds daunting? Once you see the health benefits, this becomes a habit not a chore. Add fruit to salads/yogurts/cottage cheese.Buy pre-chopped/shredded vegetables to enhance a meal or salad. It saves you time (just because you are retired doesn’t mean you want to chop veggies all day) and will get you in the habit of using them.Put cucumber/pepper slices/avocado, extra lettuce and tomato slices on your sandwich. Can’t get it all in? Add them to your snacks. What about that pasta meal?Do you realize, that when you dine out, your serving of pasta is approximately 3 cups? One serving is actually ½-1 cup depending on the type of macaroni you choose. To remedy the situation, you may add a salad or vegetable plus a protein to the meal.

In other words, lighten the large portion size (and take some home for another meal).

It is not about not having any, just adjusting the portionFood should be pleasurable, meant to be savored and

enjoyed!Sue Canonico RD

Sports reviewAs we move into summer, I will pick up where we left

off last month with the topic – the draft. I will focus on baseball’s and hockey’s draft; how the drafts work and the basic difference between these two and the football and basketball draft.

The major league baseball draft which was held on June 4th – 6th, provides a very different scenario. A player becomes eligible for the draft at several points in his life. The first exposure occurs when an individual graduates from high school; if he attends a four year college, he becomes eligible after he has completed his junior or senior year or is at least 21 years of age. If he attended a junior college, he becomes eligible regardless of how many years he completes. Only residents of the United States, and /or US territories are eligible. The pro team that drafts him has until August 15 or until the player returns to college full time to sign him. If a foreign player attends a US high school and college, they are draft eligible. International players are selected in their own draft and a different and more complex set of rules govern this phase-a discussion for another day.

In the National Hockey League draft on June 22nd, in order to be selected, the following criteria was used: the individual must be 18 years old on or before September 15th and not older than 20 years old before December 31st of the draft year. Players not from North America, over the age of 20, are also eligible for the draft. A team has the right to a player for two years; if the player attends college, the team retains these rights until 30 days after the person has left college.

The big difference in the drafts deals with entry and amateurism. In football and basketball, you must declare for the draft if you have college eligibility remaining. If you stay in the draft you are no longer an amateur. In baseball and hockey you are in the draft if you meet the age requirements but become a professional only if you signed with an agent or team. Now you have become a draft expert. I hope your team did well.

Please let me know if you have any other topics of interest. Bill Klika [email protected]
