"A Letter from the President"

I feel I have a few items to bring up to the MHS membership that are too important for Random Tails.

First of all is the monthly meeting starting time. The new.Board and majority of the members want to start at 7: 00 sharp. Many months because of weather, parking at a premium because of sporting events or concerts, members are a little late for the meeting. I do take this into consideration. I'm all for the 7:00 starting time but I do need your cooperation. The room is open at 6: 30. You may get there at that time to conduct your herp business, trading/ selling, or just old herp BS. This will help the 7: 00 starting time by having most of your personal business done by 7: 00. I am asking the entire Board to be in Room 335, Borlaug Hall at 6:45 to get the meeting set up. Your help will be appreciated so we can start as close to 7:00 as possible.

The second subject is the unnecessary distractions, loud conversations, your herp viewing, trading and general noise going on while the meeting is in session. There is no reason for us to be militant or a Rambo Delles if need be to quiet the meeting. These distractions make it hard for members who come to listen. Repeating questions or answers makes the meeting last longer cutting into everyone's social time (break). P.S. Please try to speak up when asking a question or answering one. Remember it would be very hard to come up m th a dumb question. Dumb is when a question is asked twice because there is so much unnecessary conversation in the' background.

Third and last·is my personal 1986 membership drive. A drive to keep who we have and add 30 more new members to herp out at 200. A goal that would please us all. If you have any friends that may consider a membership in MHS, let me know. I'll give it my best shot. This is the st.ml11er MRS is going to make our goal. I also want to thank everyone for sticking with us during our building moves. I trust you like our new home. The monthly attendance at monthly meetings has been fantastic. Thank you for your continued support. You make it all work! :

Fran

"Have tve Got A Deal For You Department"

In the January MHS Newsletter, Fran offered a free t-shirt to anyone who would sponsor 6 baby sea turtles for H.E.A.R.T. The ante has been upped even more as you can see from the letter below. Thanks again to Fran for his offer, and also to H.E.A.R.T. for theirs. Now it's our turn!

We had a good turnout for the April meeting. 85 of the MHS faithful found the way to, of all places, the city of St. Paul. Seriously, our new meeting place is by far the nicest we have had. In fact, it is probably too nice for the likes of us. If you had (or have) trouble finding Borlaug Hall, look right underneath the water tower. There is lots of parking (free), including some right in front of the building. There is also plenty of storage space for our library and other bits of accumulated wealth (?). MHS would like to extend a very special thanks to Gordon Murdock for hi's efforts in securing our latest meeting place for us. This is now our pennanent ,home!

The program was an interesting one. It was a slide show from the Herpetological Slide Bank in Texas, entitled "Color Patterns in Snakes". The narrator was one of the recognized authorities in the field, Dr. Bernard Bechtel. He explained the Whys and haws of the various pattern anomalies we are apt to run across. Thanks to Ann Porwoll for her efforts in securing this program for us!

MHS Library

The MHS Library has grown to the point that we now have our first appointed librarians. They are Nancy Haig and Becky Filler. From now on, they will be doing all library duties at the meeetings. Please do your best to make them feel comfortable in their new job. Believe me, it is no small task!

Also, please remember our library policies and abide by them •. Books are to be checked out by MRS members ONLY! They may be checked out for one nnnth only. If books are held for more than one month, you will be fined $1.00 per month per book. No exceptions! When you sign out a book, be sure and put the DATE DUE on the card along with your name. This is the only way we can tell When a bOok is due (or late). Abuse of any library privileges will result in suspension of the use of the library. You will also be held responsible for any lost or damaged books 0

We have a couple of new books. The first was purchased with MHS funds, and the second one was generously presented to us from the Publisher. Thanks! They are:

Turtles of Venezuela by Peter Pritchard and Pedro Trebbau. This is the regular edition of the one we raffled off. Snake Versus Man. A Guide to Dangerous and Comnon Harmless Snakes of Southern Africa by John Marais.

Help A Hapless Herp

Several hapless herps found happy homes at the April meeting. These included 3 Box Turtles, adopted out as a pair and a single female, and a pair of Rainbow Boas that were adopted out separately_ One was a Columbian, and the other a Guinean. The new adoption corrrnittee consists of Fred Bosman, Bob Duerr and Jim Gerholdt. If one of these are absent from a meeting, an alternate will be selected from the Board. If a co~ttee member bids on an animal, he will not be involved in the decision on that animal! Remember, the criteria for adoption are: 1 - have bred the species. 2 - have a mate. 3 - has kept a related species. 4 - have proper facilities for the animal. In no case will an animal be

6

Page 7: Vol. 6 (1986), No. 4

placed with anyone who does not meet at least criterion #4! All hapless herps remain the property of MHS for a period of 5 years. If during that time they can no longer be cared for, they must be rettm1ed to MHS for adoption again. After 5 years, they will become the property of the adopter, but not before. If anyone has any questions on adoption policy, please check with a Board member.

Raffle

We had 2 different raffles at the April meeting. The first was a free one for any member under the age of 12. The prizes were left over items from the White Snake Sale. Josh Yank won a toy frog with a sticky tongue, Gabe Gerholdt won a pack of stickers, Julie Kohuth won a rubber frog, and Matt Gerholdt won another pack of stickers. The regular raffle brought us $15.25. Jim Schneider won a cracked 20 gallon aquarium that had been donated by Armette Le Duc, and Matt Gerholdt won a grab bag of Snake Sale leftovers. Thanks to all who participated.

Grand Old Days

MHS will once again be active at St. Paul's Grand Old Days. We have done this for several years now, and it's always a lot of fun. The day is Sunday June 1! If you have questions, we'll have more at the May meeting, or give Fran a call.

Herp Hints

D. K. Compton once again alerted us to upcoming herp programs on Channel 2. Be sure and check the schedule ahead of time so you catch them. Thanks, D.K. It was brought up that hatchling Com Snakes often refuse pinks, but will readily accept anoles. They can also be tricked into eating "scented" pinks using an anole as a scenter. No, they will not eat worms, either earth or meal types. Fran mentioned that his baby White's Tree Frogs were thriving and growing fast. He also mentioned that one of his gopher snakes had escaped by pushing the top off of its cage. It was found wrapped (as in constricting) his African Burrowing Bullfrog. He rescued both of them from themselves. It was pointed out that maybe the frog (being a mouse-eating frog) might have had mouse on its breath and thus attracted the snake? Be sure your cages are secure!

Refreshments

The refreshments at the April meeting were generously supplied by Cheryl Keyler and were consumed with gusto by the assemblage. Thanks to Cheryl from all of us at MHS! Also, a special tharll(S to Helen Schave for her diligent efforts as our refreshment coordinator (or monitor if you wish). She is the one who lines up the goodies and also gets to the meetings early to make the coffee and set up the hot water and punch. Helen, we appreciate you! .

"Critter of the 'Month"

The "critter" for the 'March meeting was snakes with patterns. We had a pretty good show on this one, with some interesting "critters". They were:

Dumeril's Ground Boa (Acrantophis dumerili) Common Boa (Boa constrictor) Corn Snake (Elaphe g. guttata) Western Fox Snake (Elaphe v. vulpina) Plains Hognose Snake (Heterodon n. nasicus) California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getulus californiae) striped phase Intergrade Kingsnake (l..arnpropeltis getulus "goini") Desert Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getulus splendida) Greer's Kingsnake (Larnpropeltis mexicana greeri) Honduran Milk Snake (Larnpropeltis triangulum hondurensis) Red Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum syspila) Eastern Milk Snake (Larnpropeltis t. triangulum) Coastal Rosy Boa (Lichanura trivirgata roseofusca) Southern Pine Snake (Pi tuophis melanoleucus mugi tus )

These were brought by:

Chase Delles Joel Eidbo Jim Ellis Fran Frisch Aaron Hampton John Jesmer Jr ~ Dan Keyler Arm Porwoll Jim Schneider Toni Vangen

Thanks to all of the above from MHS!

MHS Field Study

The first MHS field trip to the Ordway Natural History Area was made on Strrlday April 13. We tried to call all those who had signed up, but were only able to reach sane of you. For those we missed, we apologize. The next trip will most likely be in early May. We'll let you know. If in doubt caJ::l Jim Gerholdt.

The first 'frogs were heard calling at Ordway on March 28. These were Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris triseriata). On March 31, the Gerholdt clan made a quick trip over the' area. Chorus Frogs were heard calling from the 3 temporary ponds on the site, and a Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens) was collected in the penna.nent pond. The April 13 trip yielded quite a few more herps. Those who took part were Joe Fishbein, Ben, Jim and Matt Gerholdt, Bruce and Nancy Haig, Del Jones, Therese and Greg Samudio, and Paul Spencer. Again, Chorus Frogs were heard at the 3 temporary ponds, and a few Leopard Frogs were seen (one was collected) at temporary pond #3. We also collected, marked and released 6 Plains Garter Snakes (Thamnophis radix), 4 Common Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis), and 1 Prairie Skink (Eumeces septentrionalis). 1 dead Common Garter Snake was fOtmd, along with a shell of a Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) •

The areas of most interest appear to be the upper prairie area above the 2nd set of railroad tracks and the river lake. The river lake is actually a large backwater lake formed by the Mississippi River. A series of buried plastic buckets were uncovered and will be checked daily. For directions to the Ordway Area, check last month's Newsletter. We hope to survey the lake area from canoes later on this year, and possibly set some turtle traps out.

On the following page you will find a sketch of our latest MRS project. We have comnissioned Ted Schave to build this for us. It is something we have had a need for for a long time. It is a portable folding display of MHS and what we stand for and hope to accomplish. It will be used wherever we feel it would be useful to inform and educate the public, and hopefully, to find new members for us. When it is done and ready, it will be premiered at a monthly meeting. This is something we can use at Como Zoo, Gran~ Old Days, or any other place where there is a need for it. Ted is the one who built our badge box with the MHS logo on the top, so you can see his work anytime you want" More later.

Oops! If I had read the Newsletter before I typed it up last month, I would have realized that Dave Hoppe had beaten the March 15th phind by a large margin. His phind of a Red Belly Snake on February 12 is by phar the phirst phind of 1986! Sorry Dave!

Meanwhile, as reported at the April meeting, garter snakes and gravid frogs were found at the Louisville Swamp on March 30 ~y John Jesmer and Toni Vangenc Reported by a mystery person were a Western Painted Turtle, Northern Leopard Frog, and a Wood Frog heard calling, along with Chorus Frogs, on March 30 e They did not say where.

PLEASE! If you report a phind, list where (as exactly as possible), when, and by Whom. If you feel you may have a new county record, supply a specimen or a picture!

Phantastic Phenological Phinds #2

Andrea Leader March 18, 1986-Minnesota Zoological Gardens, Apple Valley, Dakota Co., Minn.

Tiger Salamander (Ambystama tigrinum). Found in the kitchen of Large Animal Holding. There was a fresh hole in thawed area of ground about 1!2' from door. About 45 minutes later a Tiger Salamander (presumably the same one) was found in the outside tiger yard considerably slowed on ice remaining in the yard. Returned same to thawed area.

April 5, 1986-Minnesota Zoological Gardens, Apple Valley, Dakota Co., Minn. Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens). Found with a broken leg just outside of Small Animal Holding. So far it is doing fine.
