Its Official warm weather is here to stay. Big thanks to

Bob and Pete and their crew. They have done so much with their efforts to make the grounds look attractive. Take a walk around the club grounds and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

The National Patrol Rife Competition was May 31. Police officers from all over the country came to participate and show off their skills and athleticism. We as club members can get a first hand experience of the tools they use and have available for use as Police and SWAT team officers protecting our country. If you missed the event try and come next year. I think you will enjoy the day.

Next month is daughters night with David Lee from Bass Pro and Big Buck Ballz on taking your kids hunting. David Lee will be talking about getting our youth involved in the outdoors. He will also pull a name out of a hat in order to take the lucky parent and child out after walleye or musky.

The Huron River Raiders will be at it again the 6th of June. Hopefully they don’t get rained out again. Keep your powder dry fellows.

Don’t forget the Annual Rendezvous on June 12-14. Come see pre 20th century living at its finest candles and oil lamps and all the smoke poles you can handle. How many of us could actually imagine living like this in today’s times. (If the economy keeps its toll, ya never know). It’s survival with amenities.

I would like to thank Dave Fisher and all the members of MLCA for their diligence in keeping club costs down and being able to afford redoing the entrance to the Club Grounds.

Have a safe summer. See you at the club, Dan [email protected]

Good Old Day's ~ There will be a volunteer's

Andy Willetts – To rebut letter and explain his part of the exchange; Andy stated that when he approached the gentleman addressed in the letter, he stated that it would have been common courtesy to be advised that the installation of the light and something that would have been appreciated. Andy was very distressed by the letter, and has chosen to resign from his current chairmanship.

Tracey Griggs then read a letter from Tony Katopodis, which stated that due to the current situation caused by the letter, he feels it in his best interest to resign from his chairmanships. He will remain on the B.O.D. at this time.

Boy Scouts camped out on the property this last weekend and had a great time. Pool table and Juke Box made M.L.C.A. a profit of $120 the first two weeks. If their success continues and both are maintained, recessed lighting will be installed rather than the current lighting.

RECORDING SECRETARY’S REPORT: None

TREASURER’S REPORT Dave noted the following: Last year at this time the club was $41k in the hole, at this time $17k in the black – a $58k turnaround from last year. Since things are heading in the right direction, consideration needs to be given in addressing a much needed area for repair – resurfacing the driveway and parking lot. Dave would like to propose to repair this project in stages; each year doing a section of the blacktop. The first stage would be to resurface the main drive to the split at Sapsford Dr. John LaFave/Kevin Peltier moved to approve expenditure up to $13.4k to have blacktop resurfacing from the Newton

entrance to Sapsford Dr. Discussion followed. APPROVED - MAJORITY; OPPOSED - 3 MOTION CARRIED

Dan noted there were 200 in attendance: 147 Members, 16 New Members, and 37 Guests. WELCOME!

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Russ noted the following: Welcome again to our Windsor guests. Bingo really needs your help, so if you can please lend a hand selling tickets, working in the kitchen, calling numbers, etc. it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to Mike Beattie for putting a crew together for the lunch WorkBee. Thanks to Don Navigato, Sr. and Mark Geiger for all the work on the Finance Committee. All calendar dates presented were approved. Anyone who is interested in a rental please see Barry. We have really great facilities – encourage friends and family to enjoy them.

Russ introduced the following speakers: Jim Kirn/Daily Raffle - Still need sellers for the daily

raffle; down approx. $300 at the beginning of the year, now down a hundred a month. Would be fantastic and most profitable to sell all! There are three winners a day, based on the Michigan Daily Three Drawing. Don’t need to check the numbers; purchasers are registered by the seller and the check goes to the winners in the mail. Please help sell tickets – and get hours for working!

Eric Manning/N.P.R.C. – May 30th (set up) and May 31st

(the event), National Patrol Rifle Competition. Need help with various functions and you get to watch the event. It’s fantastic to watch – come have a great time!

Ken Behrens/Fish Fry – Need some additional assistance on the Fish Fry crews. Summer car cruises really increase the crowds, and the crew rotation is once every six weeks.

Thanks to Nancy Willetts and Skip Cohorst for coming in to do prep for Fish Fry’s and Bingo.

Terry Smart/Good Old Days – Meeting on Wednesday, June 24th, at 7:30pm in the main meeting room to discuss event. All volunteers are encouraged to attend and give their feedback. G.O.D. will be August 22nd, and there is a great deal of organizing, setting up, and planning to be done prior to the event. Please mark your calendars and come and lend a hand with a fantastic event.

M.L.C.A. members have attended the Western Wayne County Conservation Club’s Plate and Pin Shoot. W.W.C.C.C.A. supported M.L.C.A. during the Winter event, and in turn we are now reciprocating the gesture and having an excellent time.

Cal Kittinger/Education/N.R.A. – Saturday C.P.L. class is sold out. Next class is 50% sold out. Thanks to all of the well wishers and the help with W.O.T. while I was unable to participate. W.W.C.C.A. – doing first Friends of NRA dinner for $40. MLCA’s NRA dinner will be held Thursday, September 10th. Hope to see you there and support this great cause.

~ Letters ~Dear Frank (Zoch) and Wayne (Hoyt), Thank you for everything at Jr. Rifle, and for being there every year, I’ve been going there for 3-4 years now and I always have a blast every night. Frank’s long talk the first night, but sometimes, very rarely, he will be short winded and let the kids shoot at the end, if they have enough time. WAYNE is always joking with me, like about seeing an ostrich out on the field when I am hunting. Frank always stands up for me, and Wayne is always there to help me out when I need it. I go every Monday night during the school year. Don’t worry; I am coming back next year and all the years to come. Thanks for all your hard work. I love you guys!!!!!

Love, ~Kelly McLean

To the Officers and Board members of MLCA: Because of the current situation caused by an anonymous letter writer attacking my character and threats in the

letter to seek action from the membership and outside agencies, I feel it is in my best interest to resign from all my working responsibilities. I will not resign my Life Membership as I feel I have earned that status with my 28 years of sacrifices and work, I will resign as chairman of Adopt a Road, Range Stewardship, Bingo kitchen, Beef Cookout and all other functions that I have worked on in the past including Entertainment for meetings. I will for the time being retain my position as a Board member but that also could change soon. I have always been proud to serve Multi Lakes as a working member since 1981 but now do not even feel comfortable entering the bar to drink and laugh with all my friends, thanks to an anonymous letter!

Respectfully submitted, ~Tony Katopodis # 666

From the Horticulture committee: As always, thanks to everyone, our regulars and especially the new members that have readily joined in to get

us ready this year. Thanks to all of you. Genuine thanks also go out to all that helped fund this years work. From the special collection in January at the general membership meeting, the verbal mistake jar (not a lot but thanks to you that cussed on purpose), many individual donations (there were quite a few) and the April general membership meeting tip jar that was dedicated to the Horticulture committee. (Thanks to the Board of directors for authorizing). With a small amount left from last year we should be in good shape. Hopefully you all have noticed while driving in off of Newton road, the improvements around the entrance signs. All the leaves and brush were removed and the lilies, hostas, Dutchman's breeches and grasses were done and donated by Multilakers. Thanks especially to Jason who has been a huge help with all sorts of equipment. If you need landscaping help or advice I think I can say he would be there for you. Last but not least, please offer suggestions or help any way you can. An extra wedding reception or party because of the work by the club members can only be a positive.

Thanks again, ~Bob Bauman Letters to the Editor, and Hunt Photos should be

HURON RIVER RAIDERS (The Multi-Lakes Conservation Association Cowboy Action Shooting Group)

Dedicated to the preservation and expansion of Cowboy Action Shooting Established 2007

Cowboy Action Shooting ~ June 6th, 2009 at MLCA Our first match was held on May 9th. We had 21 paid shooters participate. The weather was not kind to us as we could only complete 3 of the 5 stages. Everyone had a good time until the rain got to bad to continue. I would like to thank everyone that helped put this on, especially Dave, Clint, and John.

The Huron River Raiders will hold four more Cowboy Action Shooting Matches on Saturday mornings this year. The dates are June 6th, August 8th, September 12th, and October 10th. Registration will start at 8:30 AM. The mandatory Safety Meeting will be at 9:15AM and shooting will start at 9:30AM. We will end shooting about 1:30PM. No food will be served after these shoots. We are still working on that. The shooting scenarios (stages) will be set up on Outdoor Range #2. A practice session is planned for Saturday, August 1st. It will run from 10:00AM till 1:00PM. Cost will be $5.00.

Cost is $13.00. A discount of $1.00 will apply for SASS Members, Wolverine Ranger Members, and Multi-Lakes Members, for a total of $3.00, if you belong to all three. Cowboy attire is strongly encouraged. Observers and helpers are welcome.

Come on out and join us for a fun morning of making guns go bang and targets clang. If you don’t have all the equipment, bring what you can and we will loan you the rest, at least the first time. Lead bullets are required since we shoot steel targets.

For more information about Cowboy Action Shooting, go to the Cowboy Action Shooting Web Page at www.multilakes.com For more information about the shoots contact Dan Campau (aka The Baja Kid) at 734-261-9786, Dan Wiseley (aka Quiet Ranger Dan) at 248-202-0058 or Ron Davis (aka Boss Wheelwright) at 248-685-1206.

Hope to see you on the range, partner.

OUR HERITAGE The day my child arrived was the beginning of a new era in my life. On that day in November, a lot of things went through my

mind as I held my newborn son. So much that it all seemed to blend together in a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. I knew the first time I saw him he was going to be an outdoorsman. I mean, he really didn’t have a chance. His great-grandfather, grandfather, and I all had an obsession with hunting and fishing.

During the first few years of his life, our influences were strong. Most toddlers’ first words were simple, not “big buck” or “good fish.” I know this may seem weird to the laymen of the world, but if it weren’t for the out-of-doors, I truly believe that things would have turned out differently for me, as well as my son.

By the time Tyler was three, he was hanging with me in the September goose fields, chasing downed birds with his Red Rider, never complaining nor wanting to go home, demanding that he drag a bird to the truck after each hunt.

Throughout the seasons, he became proficient with the tools of the trade, mastering the swing of the scatter gun, dialing in the scope of his Ruger 10/22, and learning the tricks and techniques needed to fool whatever quarry he was chasing.

At the age of 12, he was knocking down bucks my friends envied. He caught muskie and salmon larger than his leg and never questioning what I tried to teach. He absorbed every bit of information needed to become better at what he loved.

Now that he is 18, our outings have changed from sometimes short-fused lessons to fun competitions. I now know that Tyler will be a well-rounded outdoorsman and he has made me proud.

Reflecting on my own childhood, I understood the importance of the lessons my grandfather and father instilled in me through the years. I always wanted to learn more because of their own enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, times have changed. Parents are focused on the dwindling economy and rapidly changing lifestyles. Instead of TV and video games to entertain their children, parents would be well served if nature and sporting venues were introduced to children at an early age.

The statistics on hunting and fishing licenses tell the story. Growing numbers of anti-hunters and tree huggers are sure to overrun our heritage if we do not recruit our young.

It’s up to the diminishing legion of sportsmen to turn the tide for our nation’s children. Something as simple as taking a young child out to shoot a BB gun could spark an interest for life. Asking a neighbor if you can take his kid fishing may be enough to give them a passion for the sport. Without the opportunity, there is little chance they could enjoy what we as sportsmen live for.

Andy Willetts got his first Turkey! 11 inch beard, 23 ½ pounds. “It was a great time in the woods and a great looking turkey.” I also got my first Turkey! A 9 inch beard. I was

so excited that I forgot to weigh it before dressing it out, but it was 20 pounds going into the freezer. “Woooohoooo!!” ~ D.L.

Joe Carney brought home this

23 pound bird, with a beard that

measured 10 ½ inches. “I was

barely able to lift it into the truck.”

Tony Katopodis may not have had a tag, but he did get into the woods to shoot (with his camera) this nice gobbler. “I have got to get me one of those hats!”

Harvey Cooper got this 20 pounder with a 10 inch beard. “I will tell you it was in Oakland County, but other than that, my new hunting spot is top secret.”

Letters to the Editor, and Hunt Photos should be e-mailed to [email protected] Prints and hand written letters can be dropped in my box at the club. 12

June: Late Spring and Summer Work by Marty Zaremba June is a month for roses. Watch now for harmful pests, and spray or use rose dust regularly to keep them under control. The heavy spring work is over. The annual and vegetable gardens have already been planted, but additional plantings of some kinds,

such as beans and beets can be made. There should be time to trim the edges of the beds, stake and tie tall plants that need support against the wind, and still have time for other chores. Most annuals and other bedding plants should be set out the second week of June. Plant sweet corn, cucumbers and pumpkins for Halloween.

Tulip bulbs will be ready to dig up by the end of June. June is hot. This encourages the formation of many lateral bulbs rather than large central ones. Now that the weather is warm and somewhat settled, the houseplants can be taken outside to the decks. Put them in the sun or shade according to their needs. Fertilize regularly or repot when needed.

Remember to have someone cover for you, if you leave for vacation. If you only leave for a long weekend, be sure to water thoroughly and weed before you leave. If it has been cool and overcast, the hot sun will now wilt many plants. The wilting does not necessarily mean a lack of water; it means the water is leaving the plants faster than it is being replaced. Soft leaves lose water too fast. When they harden up, check the soil moisture. If moist, do not water, you could cause a mildew problem.

Try to keep the weeds out of the garden. In rain or heavy watering, weeds will appear as by some kind of magic. Rabbits are always a problem. They can cause a lot of damage to plants and early vegetables that are developing. A good fence or a good dog is all that I can recommend for help with the rabbits. If you start to notice holes in leaves, try to determine what is causing the damage. Seven will stop earwigs and most other insects. Insecticidal soap will control mites and aphids.

The lawn may start to look bad, but it is not a cause for concern. Our cool season grasses like moderate temperatures and it is now hot. Don’t worry; the lawn will soon green up again.

Shrubs and hedges have made most of their growth by the end of June. The third week of June would be a good time to prune or shear them. By the end of June they will have grown enough to hide the holes made by pruning. Hedges of privet or yew could be sheared a second time. Most shrubs that bloom before the end of June could have some branches removed after they have finished blooming. This type of pruning provides spaces for light and air to enter the plant. It also encourages new growth and flowers for next year. Don’t go crazy with the hedge shears. Usually you shear one side of a hedge and the other side is now higher. The natural instinct is to go back and shear the other side again. If you don’t resist this temptation, there may not be too much of the hedge left.

June is a good time to propagate softwood cuttings. Try azalea, bay

ants. Make a s

berry, boxwood, forsythia, hydrangea, lilac, spiraea & viburnum. Softwood cuttings are those taken in the growing season before the growth is finished for the year. Cut the end of a branch-let about six to eight inches long. Leave three to five leaves on the wood. Dip the cut ends into a root growth hormone such as indubutaletic acid. Knock off excess hormone, as a little goes a long way. Plant in a pot filled with sandy loom and sphagnum peat moss. Don’t forget to put a few rocks in the bottom of the pots for drainage. Put about four or five cuttings per pot, water thoroughly and keep them in a shady area.

Air layering is my favorite way to propagate new pllit in the stem at a point where it is desired that roots should

form. Hold the slit open with a toothpick or spent match. Insert the toothpick in the slit, wrap the wound with a handful of sphagnum moss and cover it with waxed paper or poly material. Leave the top open so that water can be added to keep the moss moist. In two or three months the moss will be filled with roots and ready to be cut off the parent plant and planted. It’s always a good way to get the difficult to find white flowering plants.

Trees can be planted in June, but be careful to check the sisture. Don’t let the roots dry out. In June, most folks spend moreing under shade trees. Now they notice that leaves have holes.

They notice that some have red or brown spots, and the ground is littered with what looks like good leaves. Holes in leaves can be okay. Red spots are probably insect eggs and are not a problem in low numbers. Brown spots are probably caused by an anthracnose fungus and have already done their damage. The ground littered with good leaves may be caused by a few different causes. The tree’s root system cannot support so many leaves, and the tree is just making an adjustment to the canopy. The squirrels cause most of the leaf drop. They are gathering material for their nests and are very messy.
