There will also be one or two new things to look for. On Palm Sunday we will have the Blessing of the Palms and, weather permitting, go in processional from the Jones lawn to the sanctuary. We will also asperge the palms and the people. Aspergeis really just a fancy church word for sprinkle”. It is one of the physical ways in our tradition that we bless people and things. It is also a reminder of our baptism, the vows of which we will renew on Easter. Our Maundy Thursday liturgy is a meaningful one. You will have an opportunity to have your feet washed, participate in stripping the altar, and hold vigil through the night in prayer. This year, as a sign and symbol of servanthood and humility, Whitney and I will wash your feet. This is particularly appropriate as this is our first Holy Week with you. This is also a Eucharistic service, so we will share Holy Communion. Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 Following these two very important and moving expressions of our life together, we will strip the altar. This action symbolizes the stripping of Jesus’ body before he was crucified. You are invited to be a part of this. The clergy will remove items from inside the communion rail and members of the Altar Guild and the congregation will carry them into the dining room. Once everything is removed, I will wash the altar. The altar is first wiped down with vinegar, then with water, as Jesus’ body would have been pre-pared for a hasty burial. I encourage you to sign up to pray with the consecrated elements for an hour during the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Don’t let that length of time intimidate you. We will supply reading materials and suggestions for your time. Few of us spend an hour in prayer and you may find incredible benefit from this. We will ensure the building is secure and there will usually be another person praying as well. Sign up either in the dining room or online at www.emmanuelepiscopal.org on the Maundy Thursday page. Sunday Morning Worship Times I hope you have noticed that April worship times are a bit of a jumble (see below and page 11) . Our current Sunday morning schedule doesn’t accommodate time for us to be together as a congregation. So when we have a special event, like welcoming a new priest or the bishop, we end up needing to do some re-arranging. This is confusing, especially to our neighbors who want to visit with us. Our Worship Service Time Work Group has met twice now to explore what we like about our current schedule, what is miss-ing, and how changing it might affect the whole system of worship, formation, and fellowship. We have drawn no conclusions, but instead are working to articulate the issues. My goal is to have an experimental schedule ready for the fall. At that point we will try out a new schedule for six months – long enough to actually get used to it – then re-evaluate and adjust as needed. I wish you encouragement and strength in this Lenten home stretch. I pray you will know Christ more deeply through it as we move toward the empty tomb. Faithfully,

Welcome The Rev. Whitney Rice!

April 1, 2019 we welcome Whitney Rice as Associate Rector. Whitney comes to us from St. Francis In-The Fields Episcopal Church in Zionsville, Indiana. Whitney is a native Missourian and a cradle Episcopalian. She was raised in Lee’s Summit, over by Kansas City, and was ordained in the Diocese of Western Missouri in 2008. She’s a graduate of University of Kansas and has an M. Div. from Yale Divinity School. And her hobby is swing dancing!

Whitney describes her ministry gifts as Christian Formation, specifically in Adult Christian Formation. At Emmanuel her emphasis will be Christian Formation for all ages and pastoral care. So many of you will be interfacing with her soon!

Whitney’s office will be located on the 2nd floor, across from the Finance Office. Her email is [email protected] and her extension is 211.

Whitney has a blog you all should read! It’s called Roof Crashers and Hem Grabbers and can be found at: http://www.roofcrashersandhemgrabbers.com/. On her blog you can explore her sermons, previous retreats and workshops she’s led and blog posts such as: “What To Do When You Can’t Forgive Someone Who’s Dead” or “The Church is Dying and It’s the Best That Ever Happened to Us.“ Expect to be wowed, and expect her to be dynamic!

We will welcome Whitney Sunday, April 7, 2019. She will preach at all services that day and will have a reception after the 9:00 a.m. service. Remember no 10:30 service that day!

Maundy Thursday Dinner & Garden of Gethsemane RSVP Prior to the Maundy Thursday service there will be a dinner. There is no cost for dinner . You are invited to join us and then attend the service. DID YOU KNOW...

Holy Week and Easter Notes

1. On Palm Sunday we will begin the Liturgy of the Palms at the Jones Lawn Gathering Place. Follow-ing the blessing of the palms the congregation will experience something new for us: we will receive the asperges, which is the blessing of those gathered with the sprinkling of holy water as a reminder of our baptism. Then like those who followed Jesus as he processed into Jerusalem on a donkey. This will lead us to the front doors of the church, followed by a prayer and entering the church singing All Glory, Laud and Honor.

2. After the Maundy Thursday Eucharist with Foot Washing, we will once again have the opportunity to participate in the Garden of Gethsemane Vigil. The chapel will be transformed into a garden with the

Reserved Sacrament on the altar, as we respond to Jesus’ question to his disciples: “Will you not watch with me for one hour?” We are invited to sign up to be in the chapel for one of the one hour slots from the end of the Maundy Thursday liturgy until the beginning of the Good Friday liturgy at noon. We encourage you to do so with a partner if possible.

3. During the Good Friday Liturgy there will be one new feature: we will at that time be invited to receive Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament that has been on the altar during the Vigil. At 3:00 pm another opportunity for worship will be offered: the Service of the Stations of the Cross, which is a devotion to the Passion of Christ which recalls a series of events at the end of Jesus' life from his condemnation to his burial. The Way of the Cross imitates the practice of visiting the places of Jesus' Passion in the Holy Land by early Christian pilgrims. The final offering will be at 7:00 pm at Christ Lutheran’s Service of Tenebrae, during which the candles lighting the church are extin-guished one by one after a series of lessons about the death of Jesus. The service concludes with a cantata sung by their choir.

4. One of the most beautiful services of the year is the Easter Vigil at 8:00 pm on Easter Eve. It begins with the lighting of a new fire and the Pascal Candle on the front porch, then processing inside, the chanting of the Exsultet which is a blessing of the candle. Then follows lessons moving us from

creation of the world through the testimony of the prophets, to the baptismal service or the renewal of baptismal vows, and then the beginning of the Easter liturgy with the lighting of candles and the ring-ing of bells. The choir will be present at this service.

Eucharistic Visitors (EV’s)

March 30 at the Mission Blitz there was an opportunity for anyone interested learning about the ministry of Eucharistic Visitors to go along on an actual visit. Some of you may be interested in participating as a Eucharistic Visitor but were unable to be here on March 30th. If you are interested, please notify the office.

There will also be in the near future a training session for new Eucharistic Visitors, for those of you wishing further training, and even for Eucharistic Ministers wishing to attend the session on our Church’s theology of the Eucharist. We have discovered that the Bishop expects that all Eucharistic Visitors in the Diocese of Missouri be licensed. In exploring what that involves beyond learning the mechanics of the visits, there is also a requirement of attending a session on Eucharistic theology. We encourage everyone in any of those categories to attend the training coming soon. It will be conducted by our new Associate Rector, the Rev. Whitney Rice.

Jr. Warden News! It is tradition and practice that the Jr. Warden in most Episcopal parishes is given responsibility for the upkeep of the parish buildings and grounds. For many years at Emmanuel, the Jr. Warden was active on Facilities Management. In recent years, we got away from that tradition. Like any business, after personnel costs, the largest operating expense is building and grounds. Because of the importance of maintaining knowledge and passing on knowledge, we are refreshing this tradition. Kim Tappana stepped into the role of Jr. Warden in January and has taken on the challenge of being the primary person responsible for building and grounds. She is working hand in hand with Facilities Management, the office and the Rector. If building things crop up, please keep Kim in the loop. Her contact information is 314-920-2427 or [email protected]. Thank you, Kim!

Congratulations to Abby and Tim Boegeman on the birth of William Boegeman. Big brother Theo is happy too!

Congratulations to Colette Giezentanner, granddaughter of Mary Ann and Jim Groetsch for coming in 2nd in the 33rd Annual St. Louis Post Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee! Colette is a student at Robert H. Sperreng Middle School in the Lindbergh District.

Congratulations to Lauren Knapp for being a finalist in the St Louis Symphony’s Express the Music writing competition in the Prose category. Express the Music is a cross-curricular competition that integrates creative writing into the English language arts and fine arts curriculums for students grades 6-12 to discover a new orchestral work and respond with prose or poetry inspired by the music. This season, students explored the finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and responded with stories, essays, and poems that express creative thought and emotion. Proud parents and brother are Diana and Stephen Knapp, and Jonathan!

Our sympathies to Kerry Thacker on the death of her father, Robert Hallahan.

Our sympathies to Karen Winning on the death of her mother, LaVerne R. Albach.

Welcome to Alexis Tardy who joined the Faith and For the Sake of All on April 1 as Program Director. Alexis will graduate in May from Eden Seminary and will be working part-time. While she’s not new, we introduce Dominique Shields too. Dominique (on the right) joined FFSOA in January as administrator for Faith and For the Sake of All. Welcome to the building Alexis and Dominique!

Monthly Collection Drive Shoes for Shoeman Water Projects. Shoeman takes new or gently used shoes that are either donated to developing countries OR sold and the proceeds are used to fund safe water projects in developing countries.

Bring shoes tied or rubber banded together (people do like to have a pair!). We’ll have some rubber bands by the bins.

It’s important the shoes donated have life in them!

Types of shoes include sneakers, sandals, flip-flops, cleats, athletic, pumps, heels, work boots.

NO HOLES in the shoes, and NO SLIPPERS!
