Sesquicentennial Update

Did you know...The year of First Presbyterian Church Tupelo’sSesquicentennial Celebration, 2017, is here! Fiveyears ago when Tom Groome initiated thediscussion of the anniversary, the year 2017 seemedso distant. The momentous year in the history ofour church is here! As the calendar year begins, these are some updates on the plans for this specialcelebration:

*Nautilus Publishing Company in Oxford continuesto assemble our church history into a beautiful, illustrated, keepsake book. The title includes thetranslated words of the stained glass transom abovethe front door of the main church building… TheLight that Shines in the Darkness.*Stephen Hazard is crafting stained glass windowsfor the six transoms in the church breezeway, repeating portions of the original design used on theupper tier of old stained glass in the Sanctuary.Installation of this beautiful addition to the churchbuilding will begin in March prior to dedication inApril.*The iron pergola/entrance to the Stuart Gardenstands ready for planting spring colors for spring. To the right of this entrance is a stone pedestalbearing a Celtic cross set in rocks in the mortar. This monument will hold the plaque naming thearea the Stuart Garden after the church founderFather Thomas Stuart. Property & Groundsmembers have established an Arboretum on thegrounds of the church garden, and this dedicationwill be included with the garden and pergoladedications as part of the celebration in April.*Charles Bryson, former member of thiscongregation and father of Steve Bryson, wascommissioned to paint a watercolor of the church.Bryson’s beautiful interpretation of the churchbuilding is hanging above the credenza in thebreezeway as a new addition to this churchentrance.*Dan Brasfield contributed many photographs foruse in the church history book. One of the prints

features the Chrismon Tree in the Sanctuary duringAdvent. The photograph was selected for FirstPresbyterian Church Christmas cards to be mailedto our home bound members this past December.Dan’s enlarged photograph is hanging in thebreezeway.*Bob Taylor, Ray Harris, and the Chancel Choir areexcited about the hymn commissioned for thechurch Sesquicentennial. This special hymn will bededicated and debuted on the Sunday of thecelebration. In addition, the service of the Kirkin’O’ the Tartan will be celebrated on that specialSunday as we pay tribute to our heritage.*Ann Godwin is collecting church memorabilia fordisplay in the glass cased bulletin board across fromthe Church Library. Any church artifacts orphotographs you would like to share can be safelyviewed in this case in the months ahead.

There will be additional areas for emphasis, including local outreach, as part of the celebration. The focus of the areas of emphasis has been tocreate lasting legacies in many areas of church life.As you can see, the plans for a memorablecelebration have been works in progress for almostfive years. This is an exciting time for FirstPresbyterian Church as we prepare to remember ourheritage and to contribute to the future.

-Everyendmarksanewbeginning. Keepyour spiritsand determination unshaken, and you shall alwayswalk the glory road.- May the New Year bring you greater heights ofsuccess and prosperity. Have a Happy New Year!It occurred to me that happiness takes on a differentmeaning in the Beatitudes. Rather than the focusbeing on self, they are on relationships. I findmyselfwondering howwe can incorporate the true meaningof happiness into our New Year greetings. From theGood News translation:-Happyare thosewhoknow theyare spiritually poor;the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them.- Happy are those who mourn; God will comfortthem.- Happy are those who are humble; they will receivewhat God has promised.- Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do whatGod requires; God will satisfy them fully.- Happy are those who are merciful to others; Godwill be merciful to them.- Happy are the pure in heart; they will see God.- Happy are those who work for peace; God will callthem his children.-Happyare thosewhoarepersecutedbecause theydowhat God requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongsto them.-Happyareyouwhenpeople insult youandpersecuteyou and tell all kinds of evil lies against you becauseyou are my followers. Be happy and glad, for a greatreward is kept for you in heaven. This is how theprophets who lived before you were persecuted.Have some true happiness in this New Year.

Preschool

Meet the teachersIt has been said that it “takes a big heart to shapelittle minds.” We have two wonderful teacherswith big hearts shaping little minds in our two -year -old preschool class.Meet Paige Lancaster. Though she was born inTupelo, Paige spent most of her early years livingin Germany, Oklahoma and Kansas. Paige and herhusband Scott have two children – Abby (12) andLogan (4). Paige enjoys spending time at home, reading and crocheting. A fun family Christmastradition for their family is going to Christmas inCottonplant. Paige says that she loves workingwith children and especially enjoys watching hertwo -year -old students grow and change. “Theysay the funniest things and give good hugs,” shesays. Paige says that working with children is “oneof the most rewarding jobs.”Assisting Paige is Mandy Murphree. Mandy andher husband Justin have three active children –Eason (13), Hayes (11) and Kate Ross (8). Herboys are involved in sports, and Kate Ross takesballet. During the Christmas season you may findMandy watching It’s a Wonderful Life or otherChristmas movies. Mandy is originally fromTunica and attended Delta State. Besides herfamily, Mandy stays busy with churchinvolvement, an embroidery business and thefamily dog Dak and cat Ruby. When Mandy wasasked why she decided to work as a teacher, shereplied, “I’ve just always loved children and havewanted to be a teacher for as long as I canremember. I also love the schedule, so I can be offwhen my children are off.”

December 14, 2016Teachers and Staff,

Our children come to you with open armsand open minds. They come with unconditionaltrust, love in their hearts and the innocence ofchildhood. What they experience in these earlyyears lays the foundation for life’s success orfailure- for their perception of authority and thelearning experience itself.

You are theirmother, their friend, their guide, their disciplinarian. You are the gentle hand thatsoothes the troubled spirit, the referee that settlesplayground disputes.Youwipe their tears, find joy intheir laughter. You are their encouragement and theirchampion.

It requires special people to do the things youdo. You are underpaid and underappreciated. Thereally important rewards that you will receive, theloudest, most sincere thank you, are theachievements these children will make- Thecharacter they will display and the lives they willlead. Without you, without your patience, love andkindness, none of it would be possible.

God Bless you!!Jon Asher (a kindergarten student) and his“Pops”

“We cannot build the future for our children, butwe can build our children for the future.”--Franklin D. Roosevelt

YouthWe've had such a busy time in youth over the pastcouple of weeks that it's hard to keep up witheverything we've done! After Thanksgiving wespent some time volunteering with Helping Hands. We either spent time with the families, moved andorganized the food, or took out the trash. We really

enjoyed getting to spend time with people from ourcongregation and people from our community. Thepast couple of Sundays we have watched an I AmSecond video. These videos feature famouscelebrities, everyone from musical artists to SuperBowl winning coaches. But the highlight ofDecember would definitely be the Lock In. Westarted the Lock In with a progressive dinner. Ourfirst stop was at Alice Rogers’ house where we hadwonderful appetizers. We had our main course atEmily Jarrett's house, and wrapped it up withdessert at the Monts. After dinner we returned tothe church where games of Sardines and basketballwere played. As the night moved on, some playedvideo games while others tried to sleep. It was along night but we ended the night, with as manykids as we started, so we consider that a win.

Peace and Love,Jamie Geoghegan

Thank YouA special heartfelt thank you from the Church Staffto all those who sent cards, gave gifts, madedonations in our honor and brought delicious“goodies” we enjoyed during the holidays! ThankYou! Thank You!
