ROTARY DISTRICT 6000’s XICOTEPEC PROJECT We’ll kick off the new year on Friday with a presenta5on about one of

our great Rotary District 6000 interna5onal programs – the Xicotepec Pro-

ject – from the individual who was instrumental in founding it in 2001 and

has been involved as Team Leader during spring break in March every year

since.

District 6000’s partnership and friendship with Rotarians in Xicotepec,

Mexico (pronounced he-KO-ta-peck), is unique in the Rotary world in at

least two ways: 1) Rotarians have had an ongoing rela5onship with an in-

terna5onal partner in one loca5on for many years; and 2) It is the first 5me

in the Rotary world where a district has partnered with a university – the

University of Iowa – to engage students in Service Learning projects for

which they receive college credit in the colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, Den-

5stry and Community Development.

Our speaker, Jim Petersen, is the individual who has provided the inspired leadership which sus-

tained the partnership since the first team traveled to the Xicotepec in 2003. He has served as an

adjunct professor with the Service Learning students at UI since 2007. Jim is a member of the Rota-

ry Club of Iowa City AM. He and his wife, Beth, are Level 2 Major Donors of The Rotary Founda5on,

and Jim is the recipient of Rotary Interna5onal’s highest award, the Service Above Self Award. Beth

is a re5red special ed teacher, and the Petersens have two grown children, Dan and Ka5e, and a

grandson, Harris.

In his talk at North Sco) Rotary, Jim will give an overview of the Xicotepec project and show us

how we individually or as a Rotary club we can become involved. – BT

Dear Polio Eradication Warriors, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No new Wild Polio cases reported this week. See attached report.

What is that Polio Eradication Picture? It's a picture of a girls outside their home during Polio vaccination activities in Punjab Province, Pakistan. This week, World Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Polio Eradication at the G7 Summit, declaring "We confirm our resolve to work with partners to eradicate Polio and effec-tively manage the post-Polio transition."

Zero is the Magic Number!

The 3-year Countdown to History starts after the final Wild Polio case. Today, we count two weeks since the report of the most recent Wild Polio case.

Following unconfirmed reports on 8 June of suspected polio re-emergence in Venezuela, final laboratory testing has confirmed the cause of the paralysis is not wild poliovirus or vaccine-

derived poliovirus. Rotary is committed to raise $50 Million (including Rotarian, public, and DDF donations) to be

matched by $100 mil from the Gates Foundation - for each of the next three years - for a total of $450 million for the Global Polio Eradication effort. And we did it this year! In the 2017-18 Rotary Year, we reached slightly over $50 Million!

Race Across America - Our 4 person Team Rotary RAAMs Polio (T416) rode from Oceanside, CA, non-stop, and reached Annapolis,MD in record time on Saturday, June 23. That's 3,000 miles of riding with 145,000 feet of climbing! They raised over $1 Million to be used to further our effort to END POLIO NOW! Congratulation to all who donated to this effort and, of course, to our End Polio - Race Across America Team!

Papua New Guinea, Kenya, SYRIA, SOMALIA, Nigeria & DRC - A new Vaccine Derived Type 2 Po-lio case was reported in Papua New Guinea this week. No new Vaccine Derived Polio cases were reported in Nigeria this week. None were reported in Kenya. In Somalia, 3 Vaccine derived Po-lio Virus cases (Type 2 & Type 3) were confirmed. No new cases of vaccine-derived Poliovirus type 2 were reported this week in Syria (last case 9/20/17) leaving the total number of Syrian cases at 74 for 2017 and 0 for 2018. Three new cases were reported in DRC bringing their total to 7 (22 in 2017).

Quote of the Day - (For the 2018-19 Rotary Year) "The #1 priority of our entire organization (and this won't be a surprise) is ending Polio. We must fulfill our promise of a polio-free world to every child." — Ron Burton - 2018-19 Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair

The Final Three Endemic Countries: Pakistan - No new Polio cases reported this week. Three Polio cases reported in 2018 - the

most recent case was from the Dukki, Balochistan Province with an onset of paralysis on 5/18/18. Eight cases reported in 2017. No new Polio-Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Pakistan.

Afghanistan - No new Polio cases reported this week. Eight Polio cases reported in 2018 - the most recent case was from the Kandahar province with the onset of paralysis on 04/27/18. Fourteen cases reported in 2017. A sub-national vaccination campaign reached 9.6 million children in May. No new Polio-Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Afghanistan.

Nigeria - No new Wild Polio cases have been reported in 2017 or 2018. The most recent Polio case was reported on 8/20/16. Nigeria has once again gone 1-3/4 years without a Wild Polio case.

ROTARY NIGHT AT THE BALL PARK

+ + + JULY BIRTHDAYS + + +

LAST WEEK – June 29, 2018 – Paul Sikorski: Davenport Chief of Police

Fifty one attended on Friday, June 29. The only guest present, besides the speaker, was Davenport Rotarian, A.J. Gross, guest of Patrick Olsen. Gregg Hancock sponsored by John Maxwell, joined North Scott Rotary (see front page). The new president, Jeff Ashcraft presid-ed over his first meeting. Many upcoming dates were discussed: Rotary Night at the Ballpark, Mud Run Obstacle Course, the Corn Boil and the John Deere Classic. Tyler and Sammy Bindrum are celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary. Brad Burt was the sergeant and collected $126 in fun fines……has he beaten Jim Smith’s record?

Police Chief, Paul Sikorski, spoke about his 30 years of service with the Davenport Po-lice Force and the past two years as chief. The department has 167 officers and gets about 98,000 calls per year. Priorities are public safety, crime reduction and community awareness. A big focus right now is trying to get to the source of the youth crime problems. It will take ALL of us to solve these problems! Always lock your houses, cars and garages. Crime in Davenport was up 6 per cent in 2017 and is down so far in 2018 by 8 per cent. Many thanks to John Maxwell for taking notes for me……..Deb.

The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
