LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hi Neighbors!
Well, we are nearing the last third of summer. The summer days are getting shorter while still staying hot, and the summer nights are getting a little cooler and longer. Some of our children are heading off to college again or for the first time. Good luck Angel and all of the other freshmen this year. We will also have some youngsters heading off to kindergarten, elementary, middle, or high school. Good luck to all the students!
Just because we are nearing the end of summer doesn’t mean we still can’t have fun. We have the annual Pig Pickin’ in September to raise money for the all-volunteer Sandbridge Rescue Squad. There is the Party at the Pier and the Baja Surf Classic and at the Oceanfront (the other beach) there is the East Coast Surfing Championships. We are so fortunate to have a wealth of activities taking place in and around our little piece of the world.
I hope that everyone had a great summer and that the rains we’ve been getting didn’t put too much of a damper on the season. It is so weird that there can be places where they desperately need rain and we are getting so much of it. I don’t want to complain, as we all need rain, but there is such a notion as “too much of a good thing being bad” for us. That being said, we need to work together as a community to get the City to work with us and fix the problems of flooding that occurs every time we get more than an inch of rain. What’s the point of having this nice beach if you can’t even get into the neighborhood or cross the street because of all the standing water?
Civic matters aside, let’s still enjoy the summer we have left as we slowly welcome fall, school, and the retail holiday season. We still have many more community activities in store for the fall. Remember to greet each other with a smile and wave and be good to one another.
Warmly,Andrew

President Andrew Roper called the meeting to order at 10:34 a.m. and led membership in the Opening Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.
The guest speaker from Trutech Wildlife & Animal Removal Specialists canceled at the last minute due to illness. Virginia Beach Police Officers Julie Hilton and Tom Downey stepped in to talk about the problem of tent frames and other beach gear being left on the beach overnight. They said they will start addressing the issue and make sure the left-out items get tagged. They said the next step will be removal.
Joan Davis made the motion: For safety reasons, the SBCL is asking the City to enforce the ordinance already in place and tag beach gear left up overnight on Sandbridge beaches. The motion was seconded, and it passed unanimously.
BUSINESS MEETING:
MINUTES: July minutes were approved as submitted.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Ken Leach reported a beginning balance of $28,505.96 on 6/29/18 with an ending balance of $21,373.96. The complete Treasurer’s Report is in this newsletter.
NEWSLETTER: Jane Stilley mentioned upcoming fall events and dates (also in this newsletter). Janice Lott reminded everyone this year’s Oktoberfest is Sunday, October 21. She mentioned there will be a few new things at this year’s event. She also needs volunteers!
President Andrew Roper reminded everyone the Fall Community Cleanup is Sunday, November 4 at Little Island Park. The Fall Community Yard Sale
is Saturday, October 13. This year there will be a charity donation truck to pick up anything left over from the yard sale.
MEMBERSHIP: Joan Davis said she’s sent out 200 renewal reminders. If you haven’t renewed by the time this newsletter is out, you will not be listed in the Civic League Directory. Joan says the SBCL membership currently stands at 1,149 households.
NIMMO PARKWAY: Mike Davis said there are conflicting reports on the status of Nimmo Parkway. He said according to Councilwoman Barbara Henley, things are moving full steam ahead. He said he has another report that funds are frozen until 2025.
TECHNOLOGY: Andrew Roper said he is working on a new software platform that will sync all aspects of the SBCL.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: There was heavy discussion as to why we are not receiving sand again this year. According to Dick Dunleavy, replenishment will likely happen next year (2019). Andrew Roper and Joan Davis explained we do pay for the sand replenishment from our SSD and TIF funding but it requires permits that the City obtains. Joan said this is not a government subsidized program as some think and she suggested people write letters to City Council and State Delegates to let them know the importance of sand for Sandbridge.
The meeting adjourned at 11:06 a.m. Yes, you read it right! Meeting was less than an hour!
The next SBCL meeting is Monday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m.
Thanks to Fran and Dave Dennis of
the Sandbridge Seaside Market for the donuts and to Johnny and Elizabeth Parker for the paper products. Also a big shout-out to Joan Davis for setting up a delicious breakfast buffet.
Respectfully submitted,Jane Stilley

Marilyn and Marshall Meredith have good reason to be proud. They traveled from Sandbridge to Raleigh, North Carolina last month for the swearing-in ceremony of their daughter, Mary Marshall Meredith, as a real estate attorney with Troutman Sanders.
Mary Marshall is a Sandbridge native who attended Norfolk academy. She played Division 1 soccer at Davidson College before going to University of North Carolina Law School. After graduating law school, Mary Marshall took the Georgia bar and first worked in Atlanta for Troutman Sanders, an international law firm. The 29-year old took the North Carolina bar last February before moving to the Troutman Sanders office in Raleigh.

Sandbridge Junior Lifeguard Camps: Seven Years of SuccessBy: Meyon Burns
The Sandbridge Junior Lifeguard Camps are getting bigger and better every year. Water safety instruction for over 400 youngsters and raising over $30,000 for "A Dolphin's Promise" are great ways to celebrate our seventh year!
It is hard to believe that in 2011, an idea to expose our kids to ocean water safety would turn into a successful annual event. As a local resident raising two young boys on the beaches of Sandbridge, I knew education was the best way to protect our children and instill respect for the ocean.
This year, we had many returning campers and some new younger ones as well as we continue to grow our efforts to educate local youth about water safety. This year’s camp raised $4,600 for the local cancer charity called “A Dolphin's Promise.”
Currently, there are six Sandbridge lifeguards who graduated from the camps and are working on our beaches and training new up-and-coming junior lifeguards: JP and Jill Eberhart, Jack Kirschner, Evan Mungin, Nick Tottossy, CJ Kaiser and Grady Bryant.
Thank you to the following for their continued support and efforts with our Junior Lifeguard Camps: Sandbridge Life Saving Service,
Sandbridge Market, Sandbridge Island Restaurant, Judy Donahue and Donna Russell. All the best and enjoy the rest of your summer!

SANDBRIDGE NEWS, SEPTEMBER 2018 9
Remembering a Special Friend: Ed PalmerBy: Jane Stilley
I first met Ed Palmer a number of years ago, when I stopped by his oceanfront home to take pictures of the “Under the Sea” murals he painted. It took only minutes for us to become fast friends. That’s the way Ed was with everyone, taking them into his inner circle immediately. Ed passed away suddenly on August 16, just days be-fore his 83rd birthday. The last time I photographed Ed, he was enjoying the Party at the Pier in June. It is hard to imagine the Sandbridge I know without Ed Palmer.
Ed wasn’t only an amazing artist. He was an entrepreneur who had started and run several companies. The last business he ran with his wife, Emilie. Ed and Emilie met while working in the same field and their children say it was “love at first sight.” They were married 39 years and were the love of each other’s life. Not only did they work together, they traveled the world together. In Sandbridge, it was always “EdandEmilie” not just Ed or Emilie!
In going through all the photos I have taken of Ed over the last few years, I realized Ed never missed a party or an opportunity to socialize. At his memorial service, the rabbi called Ed a “schmoozer.” Ed was more than that. Every word out of his mouth was genuine, kind and complimentary. And he certainly raised the dress code of Sandbridge! Who else would turn out to eat a messy plate of pasta at “Ravioli Night” wearing a beautifully ironed and tailored white shirt?
Ed not only adored his wife Emilie but he was devoted to his four children and ten grandchildren. Case in point: the couple’s license plates read “Grandpa Ed” and “Grandma Em.” Ed also loved his dog, Bella, and relished taking her for long walks on the beach.
Ed also cherished his friends which was obvious by the huge crowd that turned out at his memorial service. Ed’s passing leaves a big hole in our tightly-knit commu-nity. My dear friend, we will leave a place setting out for you at the table and clear a space on the dance floor!
WE WILL NEVER FORGET
For the sixth year, flags lined the entrance to the beach at Tuna lane in remembrance of the 38 people and a military working dog who were killed when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. The August 6, 2011 crash was the single greatest one-day loss of life in Special Forces history. Some members of our local seal team were among the 31 American military members killed. The patriotic remembrance at Tuna Lane was started by Cindy Graf and is continued every year by Meyon Burns and her family.

Down but not Out!SBCL Vice President Ken Leach was recently hospitalized for a brain injury relating to a fall he took several weeks before at his Bandidos taco stand. As you can see by the photo, Ken had plenty of visitors while he was in the hospital. Now that he’s on the road to recovery, he has sent this thank-you note to his friends, family and employees.
I would like to thank all of the Bandidos staff for all the hard work they do, and for completely taking over the business. I am also grateful for my family and for the best friends anybody could have! These are the people who are taking me everywhere and attending to all my needs. The dog days of summer are coming to a close. With our unusual tropical weather in the middle of the summer, we experienced flooded streets and road closures. Not much about that was rewarding except the high waters blocked the ice cream truck with its redundant music! Now we are entering the event-filled fall schedule. Pig Pickin’ is just days away on September 8. It is a huge fundraiser for our Volunteer Rescue Squad and it is super fun besides! Tickets are still available at the local realtors.
Our blood drive will be held on Thursday, September 6, thanks to Fred Greene who has made this his pet project. The Baja Surf Classic returns once again on Sunday, September 16. The surfing event always raises money for local causes as well as Sandbridge folks in need. This year, one of the beneficiaries is Blue Pete’s Restaurant which had to close during the busiest time of the summer due to flooding. In this dog-eat-dog, competitive world, I find it refreshing that Baja would reach out and help another restaurant.
If you are clearing out your closets and doing a fall clean, the Sandbridge Community Yard Sale is Saturday, October 13. And a week after that, we can all kick up our heels at Oktoberfest which is scheduled for Sunday, October 21. Janice Lott has graciously
taken the reins from Pat Burns and is doing a bang-up job putting this event together. She’s even adding a few new twists, so stay tuned! Please contact her if you would like to volunteer. Many hands make light work!
And speaking of many hands, please give us a hand at the Fall Community Cleanup on Sunday, November 4. Meet at Little Island Park at 1:00 p.m., grab a trash bag and help keep Sandbridge clean! And you are rewarded for your hard work, with a mouth-watering barbecue afterwards!
On a personal note: the Roper family has a lot to celebrate with Andrew’s birthday as well as his daughters (and my granddaughters) Angel who graduated and just started college and Trinity who turns double digits this year.
We experience many losses in our lifetime. Sandbridge is mourning a longtime neighbor and friend, Ed Palmer. Ed always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. Godspeed my friend.
Take time to be thankful of where we live and those we live around.
