Vol. 39 No. 21 5 th August 2010 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear members of the Marcellin College Family, A couple of weeks ago I was invited by another Catholic Secondary College to speak to their staff about the Marcellin College Vertical Pastoral Program. The school to which I was invited had reviewed the future of their horizontal or level based pastoral program and were discerning the development of a Vertical Program. I was very glad to speak to them because I firmly believe that the Marcellin Vertical Pastoral program is the best example of its type I have seen and I recognise it as one which provides excellent pastoral support to all our students. Before I met with the staff from this other school I decided to do a little research to discover some of the many benefits of this system at Marcellin. So I approached those who knew the system best – the students themselves. I asked a number of Pastoral groups to write about their reflections on the pros and cons of the Pastoral program offered at our school. On reading the students’ responses it was pleasing to see that none of them provided anything but positive thoughts on their experience. This is a great tribute to the boys themselves for without their support of the program it would not be the wonderful success that it is. It is also a testament to the Pastoral Leaders who look after the needs of our boys’ everyday. I could tell you of the value of this program but I think you would rather hear it from those who experience it, so below I have reproduced verbatim, some of the comments from our boys on the Marcellin College Pastoral Care Program. Thanks to those boys who offered their contribution. You get to know boys from other year levels and be able to socialise with them and give advice to them Makes it feel more like a family group rather than a group of mates You get help from older students As a Year 12 student I can be a role model for the younger boys It helps us to grow as young men Our teacher is friendly and gets to know us You ask older people than you for help with your homework I get a sense of being part of a fellowship You learn about what is going to happen when your in older levels It’s like you have an older brother It’s good to know older people – it makes you feel safe Sometimes when you’re around peers the same age you will get a bit silly but a vertical pastoral balances it out I have developed a great bond with my teacher and the other boys State Government Funding to Catholic Schools As you are aware Marcellin College is funded both through fees paid by families as well as by Federal and State Government funding through the Catholic Education Office Melbourne and Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. Recently, all Principals of Catholic Schools received a letter from Mr Stephen Elder – Director of Catholic Education, asking us to raise awareness of funding issues for Catholic Schools in Victoria. This awareness raising is centred most specifically around the provision of State Government funding for Catholic Schools. Below I have printed information Mr. Elder has suggested could be of interest to parents in understanding the issues of funding to Catholic Schools in this State. It is important to realise that this information is not an attempt to influence the way people will vote in the upcoming State elections later in the year. I present it for your consideration. If you would like further information on this matter I would be happy to provide it along with sample letters from CEOM which could be written by parents to local MPs. The State election is now just months away. This is an important opportunity for Catholic education to raise the issue of fair and sustainable State government funding for Catholic schools. For many years Victorian Catholic schools have received the lowest level of State government funding of any State in Australia.

• You get to know boys from other year levels and be able to socialise with them and give advice to them

• Makes it feel more like a family group rather than a group of mates

• You get help from older students • As a Year 12 student I can be a role model for

the younger boys • It helps us to grow as young men • Our teacher is friendly and gets to know us • You ask older people than you for help with

your homework • I get a sense of being part of a fellowship

• You learn about what is going to happen when

your in older levels • It’s like you have an older brother • It’s good to know older people – it makes you

feel safe • Sometimes when you’re around peers the same

age you will get a bit silly but a vertical pastoral balances it out

• I have developed a great bond with my teacher and the other boys

This is an important opportunity for Catholic education to raise the issue of fair and sustainable State government funding for Catholic schools. For many years Victorian Catholic schools have received the lowest level of State government funding of any State in Australia.

As a result, for each dollar of Australian and State government funding going to a student in a Victorian government school, a student in a Catholic school receives just 63 cents. We are asking that State funding to Catholic schools be transparently linked to 25% of the cost of education in a Victorian government school. This will ensure a sustainable funding base. The Liberal-National Coalition has committed to funding Catholic schools at this level if they are elected. The Government has informed us that the proposal is under active consideration. I encourage you to write to your local MP to emphasise the importance of this issue.” Yours sincerely, Mark Murphy Principal

Take time to think, it is the source of power. Take time to read, it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play, it is the secret of staying young.

Take time to be quiet, it is the opportunity to seek God.

Take time to be aware, it is the opportunity to help others.

Take time to love and be loved, it is God’s greatest gift. Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul.

DIRECTOR OF STUDENTS – YEARS 10-12 Mr. Jamie McIlroy

Year 10 Parents and Guardians – Live Smart Program By now all year 10 households should have received a letter in the mail outlining the Live Smart Program that will be held at the College on three consecutive Thursday nights in August. Thursday’s 12th, 19th, and 26th of August in the College Lecture Theatre from 7.30 pm until 9.30 pm. If you have not received a letter regarding the Live Smart Program I urge your son to pick up a copy of the letter from Student Reception and I ask you to consider the program that you would undertake together with your son. Peter Mac Cup On the 31st of July, Marcellin students from years 10-12 rattled tins to raise money for The Peter MaCallum Institute at the MCG blockbuster between Collingwood and Carlton. Students were roaming inside the ground from 12 pm till the end of half time. Marcellin students, Joshua Bozin, Daniel Noonan, Samuel Ibrahim, Lucas Ibrahim, Matthew Lane, Luke Anania, Daniele Raneri and Daniel Di Mattina are to be commended for their generous efforts on participating in such an important event. Their efforts helped raise valuable money for cancer research and patient care. A big thank you to the teachers, Ms Sahar Ghaly, Mrs Dora Karas, Mr Jamie McIlroy and Ms Sarah Porto, the Italian student teacher, for taking time and helping the boys during the day. Overall the boys had a great experience, although the couple of Carlton supporters who helped out weren’t pleased with Carlton’s loss! By Samuel Ibrahim – Year 9

FROM THE ACCOUNTANT Mrs. Dorothy Heaphy

Education Maintenance Allowance - Second Installment Applications that have been approved and paid for Semester 1 do not require any action for Semester 2 to allow the second round of payments to be generated unless the situation has changed for any of the applicants. Claim forms for the new applicants of those whose circumstances have changed need to be submitted to Marcellin College by August 6, 2010. Parents are required to enter their name, Centrelink Reference Number (CRN) and Payment type Code in the same format as shown on their Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card on the “Education Maintenance Allowance Application Form”, which can be obtained from the Finance Department or at the Front Reception Desk. The CRN will be referred to Centrelink to enable verification of entitlement as at the first day of Term 3, July 12, 2010. It is important that the name, CRN and Payment Type Code of the main card holder is correctly recorded on the application form, as any error will result in the claim failing the verification process, which may delay payment.

EXTENSION PROGRAM

Mrs. Nives Nibali English Extension and Work Experience – Year 10 In Term Two, Year 10 English classes spent some time examining language in the media and how the Australian Media convey messages and influence the populous. Some activities focused on analysis of newspapers. Adam O’Sullivan didn’t have to wait long to apply some of the skills learned at school when he was fortunate enough to spend time at the Moreland Leader Newspaper as part of his Work Experience Program. Adam, a year 10 student currently studying in the English Extension Program, had the privilege of having not one but two articles published in the weekly edition of the newspaper (Monday June 21 edition). Congratulations Adam, many writers take years to be published but you achieved it as a student. We look forward to reading more of your work in the future. Copies of Adam’s articles may be found at the end of the newsletter.

SCHOOL COUNSELLOR’S Mr. Chris Pattison & Ms. Christine Ward

How to increase your marks by Andrew Fuller I would urge all members of the College Community, students, parents and staff, to read Andrew's article. You will find that he has presented us with 12 powerful ways of increasing learning, each worthy of consideration and implementation. I'd encourage any student to select two or three and to use them as goals for term 3. As usual you'll find his article online in the Marcellin web page under General News.

FOMPA NEWS

FOMPA (Friends of Marcellin Performing Arts) would like to thank all the Our Lady of Mercy and Marcellin families, friends and businesses who supported us during the Fiddler On The Roof Production. Whether it was through donations for raffles or volunteering for front of house duties, all your help and support was very much appreciated by not only us, but also by the Marcellin Performing Arts teachers and the students who made up the cast and crew. It was this wonderful teamwork and cooperation between the two schools and their communities that helped make the production such an amazing success and we look forward to working with you again in the future.

CROSS COUNTRY REPORT By Mitchell Milnes

The last race for the 2010 Cross Country season was held at Yarra Valley Grammar. With the title already in Marcellin hands it was time to celebrate! The seniors finished off a competitive season. To all the year 12’s… Sam Mackie, Tyler Agius, Mitch McKenzie, Luke Costin on their final race, congratulations to you all on the success we have had at Marcellin, it has been the best six years ever. Magnificent effort from Sam Mackie and Tyler Agius for placing 2nd in year 12 for 2010. It has been a very competitive age group throughout our time at Marcellin. The intermediates won their division with an exceptional effort from Kyle Martin- Alcaide, who won gold for the season in year 10 and Joe Hardy for placing 3rd in year 9. A huge congratulations to all intermediates winning each week of the season. It has been a very dominant performance. A wonderful season by all the juniors. A magnificent effort each week in training and racing is showing. Congratulations to Ben Cox placing 3rd in year 7 for the season, and to Mitch Cooper, placing 2nd overall in year 8. I would like to thank John Meagher for all his dedication and hard work, not only for this year, but over the entire six years I have raced for Marcellin. He is a fantastic coach and an inspiration to all his runners. To Pat Green for all his hard work, organizing the admin duties and training with the team, leaving our coach to do what he does best. Thank you to all the parents for their support. To the team, congratulations on the 11th straight year winning the AGS Title… that is truly deserved by you all. Looking forward to seeing the success of the team in future years.

Mr. Green’s note: Mitch Milnes failed to mention he was an outstanding leader of the most successful cross country school team in the country. He is a much liked and respected team member and has been a major factor in building a wonderful team spirit. Mitch won the bronze medal forYr12 this season! City to Surf – 24 cross country boys tackle the grueling 14km City to in Sydney this weekend – good luck to all the boys.
