Tidbits From Our Tattered Past

1977–2011

Celebrating

1996–Soundgarden–(Is. #22): Seattle’s Soundgarden had just re-leased the follow-up to their break-through Superunknown when MC caught up with them. Asked if they felt pressure to make the new Down On The Upside a hit album, the band’s Kim Thayil laughed dev-ilishly, “It would disappoint people if we made a violent, noisy record.” Elsewhere in the issue is a feature article on “Label Shopping & Ne-gotiating Tips,” not to mention a Songwriter Profile of P-funk king-pin George Clinton. Our club re-views area spotlighted the Derail-ers, Echobelly and Acetone.

1991—Benny Medina—(Is. #13): Music Connection took a look at the career of Benny Medina, who was then Warner Bros. VP of A&R, and how his autobiographical sit-com idea for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air would go on to become a huge TV success, propelling the career of Will Smith. “I was working on the story elements,” Medina re-called of the show’s genesis, “but when I found out that Will wanted to act, a light bulb went off like in the cartoons. I had a good idea, but with Will involved it became a great idea.” Songwriter Glen Bal-lard is also profiled, and discusses working with Michael Jackson.
