KARACHI- In a meeting of the KU syndicate, the varsity's highest decision-making bodythe plans to establish a 500 bedded hospitalwas shelved and the remote possibility ofretaining its role as a degree awarding bodyfor private medical and dental colleges is now gone. The Karachi University (KU) administration sometime back announcedthe establishment of a world-class teaching hospital and trauma centreof its own. It is pertinent ot mention that sometime back a US-basedLincoln Medical Foundation had proposed to establish a 500-bed teachinghospital, costing $800 million, at the main university campus. The crisis for KU surfaced in October 14, when PMDC forced theuniversity to dis-affiliate medical and dental colleges as it did not havea constituent medical or dental college of its own. This has resulted ina huge revenue loss to KU and most of those colleges have now affiliatedthemselves with the Jinnah Sindh Medical University. The Lincoln Medical Foundation was established in 1992 by a Pakistanicouple, Dr and Mrs Firasat Ghori, who have been settled in the UnitedStates since 1970. "It evolved under the guidance of late US SenatorPaul Simon, with the aim of providing healthcare support across theglobe," explained Ghori, who is also associated with Food and DrugsAdministration agency in the US government. However, KU's internal politics and the desire not to let foundation runand manage the project and some faculty suspicions that the foundationonly sought to grab university land brought the situation to a standstill. Ghori made a final attempt to convince the university to avail thisopportunity for the sake of the Pakistani people, in dire need of goodquality healthcare but owing to delays in signing MOU the project willno longer be undertaken. The foundation planned to establish a state-of-the-art facility for thepeople of Pakistan as envisaged by late senator Simon. The foundationproposal included appointments of all professionals and consultants forthe project as well as faculty members from American universities bythe foundation.

The team performed the task with maximumdiligence and focus.

IntroductionTo maintain oral hygiene is a dilemma for all age groups in Pakistan. Usuallyfrequently encounter patients in our clinic with bad oral hygiene with calculus andplaque deposits and bad mouth odour. All major specialties such as restorativedentists, periodontists and orthodontists commonly have patients with tartar andplaque deposits. This creates hurdles for both the patient and the dentist. Badoral hygiene will lead to early loss of teeth.GingivectomyThis is a routine minor surgical procedure to excise a portion of the gingival andis necessary for continuation of treatment in patients with severe gingival hyperplasiadue to poor oral hygiene or use of certain medications.White spot lesion (Decalcification)Initial symptom of a carious lesion representing a subsurface demineralization, and is a common side effect of orthodontic treatment in patients with compromisedoral hygiene. White spot lesions also may occur in areas where there is inadequatebonding material between the bracket base and the enamel creating a space, orin instances of badly fitted bands where there is space between the band andthe tooth surface. Such defects can be repaired, at least partially, by fluoridetreatment.PeriodontitisThis is due to chornic long standing oral hygiene neglect. Again the major culpritis plaque deposit. It causes loss of periodontal attachment leading to alveolarbone loss and tooth mobility. There is bleeding swollen gums and halitosis whichinterferes with mastication with pain and discomfort.ConclusionMaintaining oral hygiene should be properly explained to all patients. Proper toothbrushing technique and mouthwashes should be prescribed to patients with poororal hygiene. It is the responsibility of all dental students, dental hygienists anddental specialists to motivate all age groups of both sexes to promote strongergums and teeth. This will aid all dentists to perform better treatment with longlasting results.

IDS 2015....Continued from front pagedespite their often diverse and complex nature. At the IDS 2015 many exhibitors presented theirproduct ranges for all kinds of everyday issueswhich comeup in dental practices today.Dr. Martin Rickert,Chairman of the Verband der Deutschen Dental-Industrie VDDI (Association of GermanDentalManufacturers) comments: "At the IDS2015, the offers available to digital dental practiceswill form a particular focal point for all visitorsfrom the fields of dental medicine and dentaltechnology. The product ranges exhibitedcontribute to simplifying workflows and, as aresult, to reducing treatment times. But alsomaterial costs can be reduced with them.Together with the digital range for dentallaboratories they create synergies with positiveimplications for practice management andtherapeutic procedures.Products presented included software for a mostefficient patient management in dental practicesof all sizes. They also featured integratedtreatment planning functions, so operational andtherapeutic procedures can be prepared andcarried out efficiently. Especially comprehensiverestorations must be coordinated in terms oftiming, for example restorative measures andprophylactic measures, operations and prostheticrestorations. Firstly, because patients areinterested in treatment which take the leastamount of time, secondly, because practices canthen optimise their workflows. These days, evaluation procedures, diagnosesand therapy planning take place using digitally-controlled imaging procedures. Digital volumetomography (DVT) and computer tomography(CT) have established their place alongside theclassic x-ray techniques - with imaging plate orCCD technology. In a detailed way, they indicatethe soft and hard tissues of the jaw, as well asthe nerves, and in so doing, support dentaldiagnoses and therapy planning. For manufacturing particular restorations whichfulfil the patient's individual needs, a scanner isalso integrated in many of these devices, so thata 3D image of each patient's entire face can becaptured and recorded. This image helps dentistsand dental technicians when producing patient-specific restorations: the design of frameworksand red-white aesthetics supports cavernous lipand cheek areas. These scanners supportdentists also when reconstructing jaws and teethafter face and jaw operations. The data gained by CT or DVT are also used forimplant planning as it is able to digitally displaythe soft and hard tissues of the jaw, as well asthe nerves, dentists are able to correctly selectthe necessary implants and position them inprecisely the correct place. Using the drillingtemplates produced according to this data allowsevery individual implantation to be carried outvia digital navigation. The range of planningsoftware and their new features were presented

by many implant suppliers at the IDS 2015.The electronic maxillomandibular relationshipand its digitally-supported data collection are partof the digital workflow of dental practices. Thistechnology is a valuable diagnostic tool, whichalso makes a substantial contribution to treatingcraniomandibular dysfunctions. Furthermore, inthe process, advances in treatment can also bedemonstrated which have been achieved viarestorations that were specially carried out tofulfil the individual needs of the patients inquestion.Special attention was the intraoral scanner (IOS),a revolution in prosthetic treatment. Thiscontributes to rendering prosthetic treatmentworkflows significantly more simplified and farmore precise: they can be used to safely andquickly model preparation data. Patients anddentists equally profit from the use of thistechnology: treatment times are shortened, because the so-called "modelling compound" isno longer required, which has to remain in themouth during the setting time. The advantagefor dentists, among other things, is that it enablesthem to immediately examine their preparationson-screen, and view everything in detail by usingthe zoom function. If necessary, they can quicklyre-record the preparation data.Desktop scanners, too, which are able to scanmoldings, were of interest to dental practices. The data transferred to the dental laboratoryenables each patient's case and the possibilityof a solution to be discussed within a short periodof time together with the dental technician. The preparation data gained directly via intraoralscanners or indirectly via a desktop scanner canhowever also be processed at the dental practice:chairside, using grinding equipment, as well asusing milling and grinding equipment in thelaboratory at the practice. Chairside, ceramicmaterials for direct restorations are used, forinstance veneers, inlays, onlays or crowns; inthe laboratory at the practice, frameworks madeof oxide ceramics or plastic are also used, whichare subsequently veneered. Since the IDS 2011it is also possible to process cobalt chromiumsintered alloys using the equipment mentioned.Another production route is also available todental practices: the dental and industrialproduction of restorations. This is how dentistscan view various production options, and selectthe option which is the most economically sensiblefor each case, in terms of indications andmaterials. In addition to the large therapeutic field of dentalprosthetics, a wide range of prophylactic treatmentand restorative dentistry services were the focusof interest at the IDS 2015. This is because thesesections are also hardly imaginable without digitaltechnology - even if it is not spectacularly obvious:the impulses and displays from the equipmentused for this purpose are digitally controlled."Dentists, practice staff, as well as dentaltechnicians attended the International DentalShow (IDS), the world's largest trade fair fordentistry and dental technology, in Cologne toabreast themselves with an optimal way aboutthe current status of the ranges available for thedigital practice.IDS takes place in Cologne every two years andis organised by the GFDI Gesellschaft zurFörderung der Dental-Industrie mbH, thecommercial enterprise of the Association ofGerman Dental Manufacturers (VDDI) and stagedby Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.

Women: Changing the Face of Dentistry inPakistanContinued from page 10Women are Suited for DentistryJonathan Taft was an early and consistentsupporter of women dentists. He admitted LucyHobbs to the Ohio College of Dental Surgerywhere she became the first woman graduate ofany dental program in 1866. Beginning in 1880,women were in nearly every dental class at theUniversity of Michigan. In 1890, Dean Taftadmitted Ida Gray-the first African Americanwoman to receive a degree in dentistryA Tradition of Liberal ThoughtJames Truman's Quaker background may haveencouraged his open mind toward womendentists. Both as professor and dean at thePennsylvania College of Dentistry, Trumansupported women students, considering it "a dutyto attempt to open the way for her entrance intopractice." Even before women applied to thecollege, Truman said in his 1866 commencementaddress, "Talent is of no sex, color or clime…Let your daughters enter the professions oranything they can earn a livelihoodCapable in Every WayDuring the 19th century, women's career optionswere extremely limited and dentistry was noexception. Women were expected to be in thehome tending to husband and children. Medicineand dentistry were considered particularlyinappropriate as it was believed that womenshould not be exposed to the indelicacies ofhuman anatomy. Professional men wereespecially resistant to viewing women as equalsin what had been male-dominated fields.Fortunately, deans of two dental colleges providedcritical early support to counter opposition by all-male faculty. Women dentists also found anacceptable niche as their nurturing qualities wereconsidered ideally suited to treating women andchildren. Women can accomplish good work andI have observed they are always above men intheir class. This is accounted for in that she isself-reliant. Women know they will meetopposition, and prepare for it; they determine tosucceed…and will be a means of elevating theprofession.Detractors of Women in ProfessionGeorge R. Thomas did not believe women arephysically capable of performing lengthy oralsurgeries. Thomas wrote, "it is an impracticableidea for women to enter the practice of dentistry. The constrained position the operator is obligedto assume, and continue in for hours together, would, doubtless, under certain circumstances, prove very disastrous and perhaps fatal to afemale operator. It is only when ……… she haslost all maternal instincts, and determined todestroy all that tends to make her lovely andlovable to man-only when she has become aman hater-should she turn to the vocation ofman for a support, and become a competitorwith him in the great struggle for existence.
