A huge meteor hurtles inspace on its way to adding theplanet to the rest of the asteroidbelt debris. Dodge (Carell) is aninsurance agent whose wife justleft him the moment the end ofthe world was announced.

Penny (Knightley) justmissed the last commercialplane to leave the United Statesand will not likely ever see herfamily in London before theplanet blows up. They meet ac-cidentally in the hallway, a daybefore the entire city getsburned by the riots.

There’s a few details aboutletters getting mixed up inthe mailbox that I’llskip, but suffice it tosay that the twoform a utilitarianpartnership. Pennywill help Dodgelook for his highschool sweet-heart, Dodgewill take Penny

to the one person he knowswho can fly her out to the UK.They get into a few misadven-tures, yadda yadda. And then,in a very Titanic way, guesswhat happens at the end of themovie when the meteor strikes?Guess.

The film starts out quitefunny as the premise is laid

out and the entirepopulation is just

going nuts. Butthen it quicklydevolves into

standard charac-ter and dialoguecliches on missed

opportunitiesand loneli-ness, boo-

fhoo. I thought the actors werewinging this drama, particularlyKnightley who is a much betteractress in the hands of a muchbetter director. There’s a fewgood soundtrack choices, but,tsh.

And that is the end of thismovie. Moving on.

SkyfallDirected by Sam MendesA botched mission to recover

a harddrive containing the iden-tities of all secret agents of NA-TO embedded worldwide sendsM (Judi Dench) to early retire-ment and agent James Bond(Daniel Craig) falling to hisdeath. Hey, that’s how themovie starts, don’t say it’s aspoiler. Anyways.

That bit is actually just partof a much bigger sinister planby a person from M’s past,called Silver (Javier Bardem.)Such a short on-screen time,but Bardem does a good jobmaking the bad guy look fun.You know, the more likeable thebad guy, the more evil he is. Atthe end of this episode, JamesBond saves the day, of course. Ican’t give away too much de-tail.

Suffice it to say this is one ofthe more ambitious bond filmsever in terms of scale andstunts. But actually, Skyfall isone of the better Bond films be-cause its main discourse is tojustify the vey existence of se-cret agents and the Mi6, toldpoetically in front of a ministe-rial hearing by M herself. Inother words, perpetuity.

There are loads of referencesto old Bond films: from the As-ton Martin that first appearedin Goldfinger to a “perfect”martini that’s shaken and notstirred to exploding pens from anew Q (Ben Whishaw.) Howev-er, we know the gadgets don’tmake Bond; Bond makes Bondand Craig delivers on the physi-cality of the character quitevery well.

My only gripe is that Skyfallis a spectacular, albeit narcissis-

tic, self-gratifing look at theBond franchise and how 007

will continue to serve onHer Majesty’s secret ser-vice - new Q, new M or

even a new Star.
