TumultW. Howard BrandenburgHarwood Main GalleryMarch 3 – March 30Reception: March 17Friday, 5 PM to 8:30 PM(an ArtsCrawl Event)My paintings revolve aroundhumanity, both physical andbehavioral. In the past I havefocused on the unifying qualities thatwe share, paintings depicting ourefforts and the progress of ourspecies. In contrast, the paintings Ichose for this exhibition represent adifferent aspect of humanity. Theideas rooted behind the layers ofpaint and composition are derivedfrom metaphor, dreams, fairytales, and the natural world in response torecent political and social tides inAmerica. This series of paintings, produced after 2001, exploresaspects of human behavior thatstrain the modes of reason, compassion, and community. Theseare visuals that examine theharshness of our human choices insubtle and blunt renderings. Myworks are not meant to be static tothe viewer. I hope to provokeengagement and contemplation ofthe ideas through the use ofmovement, repetition, superimposition, size and multiplesurfaces, luring the viewer deeperinto the paintings while keeping theimage neoteric and in flux.

ContemporaryCorsetsCharmaine G. BrownHarwood South GalleryMarch 3 – March 30Reception: March 17Friday, 5 PM to 8:30 PM(an ArtsCrawl event)Corsets are classic garments thatenhance a person’s life with beauty, style, and excitement. Enthusiasmfor corsetry has increased overrecent decades. A corset that fitsproperly provides comfortable bodysupport, defined figure shaping, anda smooth silhouette. Corsetry in itsextreme form (termed tight-lacing) isviewed as a form of bodymodification similar to the physicalalterations of body building, bodypiercing, and tattooing.

In this exhibition corsets arepresented as both exquisite sculpturalobjects and items of high couturefashion. These one of a kind steel-boned corsets are created by artistand couturiere Charmaine G.Brown. A preview of some of thecorsets in this exhibition can beviewed at corsetandcloak.com.Support fashion photographyprovided courtesy of PulpPhotography.

We share a love of theintense and often stark landscape ofNew Mexico. This show by artists ofwidely divergent strengths andtalents is the result of a collaborativecommitment to foster individualcreativity within the group. Ourcreative dialogues nourish withoutever limiting the unique vision thatdistinguishes each member’s work.Compliments, objective criticismsand laughter typify our critiquesessions. We encourage, question, and challenge each other withhonesty and without discord, unitedby our common interest in pastelpainting. With the support of ourpeers, we explore our shared, yetsolitary, quests for artistic growth andcreative expression. The images from thisbody of work represent placesthrough small found objects, ratherthan photographing the land itself. These objects act as metaphors forplaces, either geographic orideological, by creating a spark ofa story or memory that is unique toeach viewer. These images representplaces that cannot be contained in aframe or hung on a wall but ratherexist in our collective memories andimaginations.

Stitching TimeTogetherThe PinholeTheater ProjectJyl KelleyHarwood Main GalleryMay 8 – May 31Reception: May 19Friday, 5 PM to 8:30 PM(an ArtsCrawl event)Producing photographs and videoanimations with pinhole imageryfrees Jyl Kelley to see beyondmodern magic and illusion. Herstage takes the shape of a circle. The inner arena consists of up to 33pinhole cameras arranged ontripods. In the final images, thecameras are always visible.Animated video loops areconstructed by scanning the pinholecamera’s negatives. The extendedpinhole exposures in the digitalphotographs reveal the physicalprocess and become the thread thatstitches time back together. Stillimages and animations are showntogether in theatrical installations.Kelley’s arena creates photographicperformances that harken back to atime when photography wasconsidered modern magic. Themagic is not in isolating a briefmoment in time, but its ability tostitch time back together.

Sports Animal Julianne HarveyHarwood South Gallery May 8 – May 31Reception: May 19Friday, 5 PM to 8:30 PM(an ArtsCrawl event)Animals are represented in the worldof competitive sports as mascots, totemic symbols and even asscapegoats. Their significancecorresponds with the fluctuatingrelationships humans have with thesepowerful animals in the naturalworld. The savagery and elusivemagical qualities valued in the“sports animal” create a dichotomyoutside the arena. Humans bothemulate and have disdain for manyof these creatures. Competitioninvolving actual animals or animalssymbolically representing a team areaddressed in this series. I aminterested in the many aspects ofanimals as they are revealed inmetaphoric content, social context, and meaning in sports culture. Thephysical and spiritual realms of the“sports animal” are a continuedsource of inspiration for my work.

Shape NoteSingingShape up and sing! Experience theliving tradition of Shape NoteSinging. Also called Sacred Harpsinging, the music is rugged andsoulful American harmony, sung forpleasure (not for performance.) Wesing to and for each other, four-partharmony - treble, tenor, alto, base -arranged in a hollow square. Wesing from “the Sacred Harp”, a tunebook originally published 160years ago, although the traditionhas its roots even further back, incolonial New England. From there, the music migrated to the ruralSouth, where it has been sung forgenerations in the beautiful, old, wooden churches found along theback roads. The Folk revival of the‘60’s and 70’s saw the musicexpand to the urban Midwest andWestern states. The AlbuquerqueShape Note singers have beenmeeting since 1990. The Quality of Life Initiative is the product of an ArtsAlliance sustainable funding project in which we, and asmany as 60 other local groups, took part. Over the last fiveyears, we researched other cities, planned an Albuquerqueand Bernalillo County approach, and last year, succeededin getting enabling legislation passed by the New MexicoState Legislature.

Arts and cultural organization in Albuquerque andBernalillo County including the Harwood Art Center, areabout to go “prime time” with the Quality of Life Initiative, which could transform the way our organization is funded.

A kickoff rally has been set for March 6 at 5:30 PM at the Albuquerque Little Theater, and we are all invited.
