Well it’s time once again for me to address the membership with some words of wisdom, or maybe just words. There’s not really much to say this month, but as always, a reminder about your dues and renewing them. We have lost some members over the months, for one reason or another and I am sorry to see them go. I hope it isn’t due to the renewal charge of either $15.00 or $35.00. Just remember that this is one of the reasons this club has been able to donate nearly $7000.00 in its 16 months of operation. To all the new members we have gotten in the last months, I say welcome and I hope you stay with us for a long time. On another note, I know this is a long time from Reno’s “Street Vibrations” in September, but rooms are going fast, all motel and hotel rooms in Virginia City are already gone! The club has got a block of rooms that Bill will talk about in detail, so watch for the email he’ll be sending to all Members.

Shadow Casters Ring In The New Year By Paul Hall

Sierra Rider’s Rollin’ Reporter

Close to thirty Shadow Casters and friends gathered at the Triangle Road Café to bring in 2005. The event was the brain-child of yours-truly and the “Hat Lady” who thought it might be fun to celebrate New Year’s Eve with good friends. The party got under way at 8:00 pm and by 9:30 pm every-one was enjoying Bar-B-Q Cornish game hens, beef and sau-sages with all the trimmings. The small restaurant was just right for our hard-core group of revelers providing a carpet dance floor and plenty of room to sit between dances. The

counter space was transformed into a well-stocked bar with beverages provided by the club. The four-member band -- supplied by the restaurant -- was terrific, playing old favorites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. This was no Holiday Inn lounge act either! You definitely knew the band was playing and could feel the beat. At 10-seconds to midnight I counted down the end of ’04; kisses, hugs, noise-makers and Champaign glasses were abundant as the first few minutes of 2005 ticked by. By 1:36 the last of the cele-brants staggered out the door and all made it home without incident for which we are thankful. Our compliments to master chef Beth Bowlin, owner of the Triangle Road Café, whose food, hospitality and long hours of work were greatly appreciated. The band’s lead signer Robert Bowlin, Beth’s husband, did a great job along with his fellow band members, Thanks guys! And kudos to Paula and her sister Kathleen for the great decorations. Oh, and thanks to fellow motor-head Mirriam Wackerman who loaned us a canopy for the patio so we could ward off descending moisture while getting some fresh air. And a very special thanks to Mike and Joyce for providing the beverages --with club funds… A little kick back for those members who managed to show up. Speaking of which… The only bummer was that there were a couple members who didn’t make it – and you “know who you are” – my

hope is that you make it to the next event. As our ven-erable president said following another recent event (to which some club members didn’t show): “Participation of members is what will make this club even better, so it’s up to you.” Wheels down in ’05 And many happy rides!

The TRC crew: Amanda, Shelly and Beth did a great job for us!

Hmmm delicious appetizers!

The Biker Brunch By Bill Leidenroth

The Iron Door Saloon in Groveland is the oldest saloon in California; Est. in 1852

Our first ride of the new year was nothing short of beautiful, well for some of us that is...details later. After surviving epic rains and cabin fever, 9 riders on 9 bikes showed up at the Miner’s Inn parking lot. Notably, there were no female riders for this trip. According to Mike, Joyce preferred to “Nest” on this perfect January 16th day, as did all of our other “usual suspects.” Our stag party left at 10:30 am but, when we got to Coulterville, Jim Platto stayed behind due to other com-mitments at home. As for the rest of us, we continued on up to Groveland, albeit a bumpy route. The trip to Groveland was nothing short of a perfect ride on a perfect day. Having squeezed into hard-to-find parking areas on arrival, we entered the bar through the historic Iron Doors. The place was filled with historic arti-facts and dated décor. As for the food, it was good. Some ate hamburgers and others, including “yours truly,” ate Buffalo Burgers. “What’s the difference,” you ask? About $2.00. It’s really hard to tell them apart. The service was a little slow and the prices were a tad on the high side; $8.00 for the Buffalo Chip on a bun. With our bellies full, we went out side to mount our steeds for the return trip home. The weather was clear as a bell (what ever that means) and the temps were beginning to warm up. As a result, many of us dressed down for the occasion; taking off scarves, heavy gloves and face masks. Mike decided to take a “smoother” route back to Coulterville, which was much appreciated. About 7 to 8 miles before coming to Coulterville is where our perfect trip took a slight turn for the worse. It seems that fog had blown into the area, dramatically reducing temperatures and visibility. We pulled over in Coulterville to “brew up,” thaw out and rethink our return trip home. And here is where our story gets interesting.

The Sierra Rider 6 www.sierrashadowcasters.com

It seems some of our crew were concerned about the thick fog on the way home. I should mention, on several occasions, we could feel our rear tires skid on the sandy roads. During the clear ride up, we could see the sand, but in the fog, the sand was almost in-visible and posed a real potential hazard. Many thought the valley fog was on the rise and if we took the “low road” back, we would be under it for most of the way. I, on the other hand, had paid atten-tion to the fog on the way up (visible on our left) and realized the fog was too thick to rise in such a short period of time. What we were getting in Coulterville was merely an isolated fog bank that managed to make it over the mountain. Being the first to leave, I told them I’d probably make clear and warmer weather before hitting the Bagby bridge and took the “high road.” John Stewart and Al Montoya soon followed and also took the “high road.” Little did we know, the fog was gone in less than a

1/4 mile out of Coulterville on Hwy. 49. The “high road” back was as clear and as warm as the ride up, with just a little fog around the Bon Ton area. As for the rest...they took the “low road!” Rather than try to describe their torturous trek with a second hand ac-count, I’ll just reprint Gerd Stoecker’s first hand email: Hi Bill, I think I should have ridden back with you to Mariposa. Man was it foggy going back through Hornitos. Our fearless leader Mike was just zipping along in the fog. I constantly had to wipe my visor and still could not see much. I was the fourth bike in the group and could not see Mike. And than it came to me. That's why we call our club "Shadow Riders". It was a great ride and I made it home safe. Take care. Gerd If there is a moral to this trivial tale, it’s that “ALL ROADS LEAD TO A GREAT RIDE!” See you on our the next run!

Rider of the Month

Featured Rider: Al Montoya I’m the one with the bright yellow Victory. If some car turns in front of me, they’ll sure have a hard time saying

they didn’t see me! I started riding as a kid of ten with the first ride being a Honda Mini-trail 50. Growing up in Orange County California made it second nature to get involved with motorcycles. Saddleback Park was the moto-cross park fea-tured in the movie “On Any Sunday” and was 20 minutes away. Kinda’ led to a lot of ditch days in high school as the track was always redone on Wednesdays for the weekend races. 250 C.C. Yamaha and CZ’s led to a lot of lost skin and a broken ankle so I eventually got into Trials riding with a Bultaco Sherpa T that’s still awaiting its’ resurrection in the garage. The gas shortages of the 70’s encouraged me to take up road riding.

I am married to Sarah (who is also in the club), and we have three kids; Mike, Melissa and Melinda. Serial Yamahas, and a Suzuki highlight the 80’s and 90’s. Throwing in a few long rides convinced me it was time for a big cruiser, thus, the “Vic”.

We’ve really enjoyed some of the riding that is available in the area. The Sonora and Tioga passes in the summer or fall can’t be beat for sightseeing. Short two hour rides north or south offer vistas right out of Sunset Maga-zine.

The Club membership serves to remind one that, every once in a while, you need to commit yourself to take a day off of the work rut and go out to have some fun! It’s also satisfying to belong to a group of people who have had such a positive impact through fund raising for so many good local causes.
