PHARMACY NEWS

What’s the Deal with

Acetaminophen? In January 2014, the Unit-

ed States Food and Drug Ad-

ministration (FDA) recom-

mended that health care pro-

fessionals discontinue pre-

scribing and dispensing pre-

scription combination drug

products containing more

than 325 mg of acetamino-

phen. The question that many

consumers were asking was:

Why?

Acetaminophen is one of

the most widely used over-the

-counter medications in the

United States, and is used to

treat pain and fever. It has

been over-the-counter since

the 1950s, and is also found

in many prescription and over

-the-counter products, includ-

ing some children’s medica-

tions. So if it is so safe, why

the warning?

Although acetaminophen is

safe in small doses, liver

damage can occur if the med-

icine is taken incorrectly.

Common Questions

We Ask Our Pharma-

cists

At Gloyer’s Pharmacy, we

strive to meet the needs of

our customers. Over the

years, we’ve received many

questions regarding our cus-

tomer care. Here are a few of

the most common questions

we receive from our custom-

ers.

(1) How will I know if my

new prescription is safe to

take with my current medi-

cations?

Answer: When in doubt,

ask. The best way to know if

your new prescription will in-

teract with your current medi-

cations is to ask your pharma-

cist. At Gloyer’s Pharmacy,

our pharmacists are always

willing to discuss your medi-

cations and address any con-

cerns you might have with

any of your medications.

Please make sure to let any

of our pharmacists know all

the medications you take so

that they are aware and can

provide you with the best ad-

vice.

(2)What should I do if I have

a bad reaction to my medi-

cation?

If you have an adverse reac-

tion to a medication you are

taking that seems serious or

life-threatening—for example,

if you have trouble breathing,

tightness in the chest, fever,

itching, blue skin color, con-

vulsions, or swelling—contact

your nearest emergency room

or call 911. If it is non-life-

threatening, call your doctor

or pharmacists and inform

them of your symptoms.

(3) What should I do if my

medication looks different

from last time and there is

no note telling me that it

has changed?

At Gloyer’s Pharmacy, we try

to inform our customers about

any changes in their medica-

tions. That includes: the name

of the medication, the

strength, and the manufactur-

er. If a generic equivalent has

become available, we will in-

form our customers of the

substitution. We also like to

mention to our customers if

the manufacturer has

changed, as sometimes hap-

pens when our supplier runs

out of a specific manufacturer.

As always at Gloyer’s Phar-

macy, if you have any ques-

tions regarding your medica-

tions, please come by or give

us a call. We are always hap-

py to answer any questions

about your medications you

might have.

.

Due to new findings, the FDA

has set the daily maximum for

adults at 4,000 milligrams.

That may seem like a lot, but

consider that one tablet of Ex-

tra Strength Tylenol contains

500 mg of acetaminophen.

The makers of Tylenol have

even started a campaign to

warn consumers not to take

more than one product con-

taining acetaminophen.

The warning should not de-

ter consumers from using any

product containing acetamino-

phen, but only make them

more aware of the dangers of

overdosing. Consumers

should never take more than

the prescribed dose of any

medication, and talk to your

doctor or pharmacist if you

have questions or concerns

regarding any prescribed or

other-the-counter medication.

Our pharmacists at Gloyer’s

Pharmacy are always willing

to answer our customers’

questions. For more infor-

mation about acetaminophen,
