    ADVOCACY DAY 2006ADVOCACY DAY 2006ADVOCACY DAY 2006ADVOCACY DAY 2006

The Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council took part in the annual Art Advocacy Day at the state capital on March 9. Representing the SMAHC region were Luanne Fondell, Dawson; Bruce Boldt, Windom; Dennis Hansen and Paul Johnson, Pipestone; Ben Vander Kooi Jr., Luverne; Erica Meium, Luke and Allison Geiger, Willmar; Paul Chindvall and Brent Olson, Ortonville; Greta Murray, Ghent; and Charles Carrera, Marshall.

More than 250 arts advocates came to the capital and visited over 80% of all legislators. The SMAHC teams met with 13 state senators and repre-sentatives, including Senators Steve Dille, Gary Kubly, Dennis Frederick-son, Jim Vickerman, and representatives Scott Newman, Lyle Koenen, Dean Urdahl, Aaron Peterson, Al Juhnke, Brad Finstad. Marty Seifert, Rod Hamilton. and Doug Magnus. The focus of the meetings was to seek sup-port from the legislators for the arts and specifically to include the arts in any dedicated sales tax amendment.

The results of the Arts and Culture Economic Impact Study were pre-sented to the legislators. This statewide report, The Arts: A driving Force in Minnesota’s Economy measured the eco-nomic impact or arts and cultural organizations and their audiences. This study reveals that the nonprofit arts and culture industry is a mover and shaker in Minnesota’s economy with $838.5 million in annual economic activity that supports 22,095 full-time jobs and generates more than $94 million in state and local government revenues.

More Advocacy Day pictures are on the SMAHC web site at www.smahc.org.
