News from the North Hills High School Choral Program October 2017 Moving Right Along! It’s hard to believe that we’re about to enter the second quarter of the school year. We’ve had a productive first 9- weeks in the choral program. What a fantastic night of music we had Wednesday at the Fall Collage Concert! It was a great way to showcase our high school music ensembles as we start this year of making music together. The collaborations on pieces with choir, strings, and bands were fun to put together, and we hope the audience enjoyed it as much as we did preparing for the choral portions of the concert have been compiled into a video and it is posted on our North Hills Choir YouTube channel. Check it out to relive the music! Our Dreamcatchers and Arrow ensembles are off and running. The Dreamcatchers had their first performance for the North Hills School Board last Thursday, and all were impressed with the level of performance after just a few rehearsals. Voices of Spirit at NHHS The select chamber choir from Duquesne University, the Voices of Spirit, and their director Dr. Caron Daley, paid our singers a visit a few weeks ago. The VoS performed a brief concert of the pieces they were learning for their upcoming concert, then they spent about 20 minutes with the North Hills Singers after school discussing life as a college singer and what the expectations are for involvement in the choir after high school. Dr. Daley stayed for an additional 30 minutes to work with the NH Singers, coaching them on the songs they performed at this week’s concert. PMEA Honors Choir Next weekend, six of our choir members will participate in the PMEA District 1 Honors Choir festival at Trinity High School in Washington, PA: • Eleanore Pavelle, Soprano 1 • Marissa Karpinski, Soprano 1 • Katie Emmons, Alto 2 • Eric Jazbinsek, Tenor 1 • Aidan Kelly, Tenor 2 • Charlie Knox, Bass 1 They will spend the day with over 100 other high school singers from our 5-county district learning from guest conductors, then will perform a concert on Saturday afternoon for the public. FreshmentoAttendSweetHarmonyTheAmericanChoralDirectorsAssociationofPennsylvania(ACDA-PA)annuallysponsorsfestivalsfordevelopingsingersingrades6-9.FourofourfreshmenWomen’sChoirmemberswillparticipateintheSweetHarmonyfestivalonNovember2atWestAlleghenyHighSchool.AlenaBrisco,MarieGurtner,KayleeMoffitt,andSheaSweeneywillspendthedaywithgirlsfrom20otherschools,learningtousetheirvoicesandexperiencethepowerofgirlssingingtogether.Theywillendtheafternoonwithanclosing“informance,”aninformalperformancetoendtheirtimetogetherandtorunthepiecestheyusedtolearnduringtheday.
OrlandoPerformanceTourUpdateThisinformationwassharedonSeptember29,butisworthre-posting:WehavefinallybeenabletoconnectwiththestaffatDisneyPerformingArtstogetsomemoredefinitiveanswersregardingourschedule.ItappearsthattheweekendwearevisitingOrlandoisoneofthebusiestforschoolgroupsandtherearewaitinglistsforperformanceandworkshopslots.Aswehave3groupsbetweenthechoir,marchingband,andorchestra,eachwithaworkshopandaperformance,ithasbeenchallengingtotrytoputtogetheraschedulethatworksforeveryonethatallowstimetoalsoenjoytheparks.ThemarchingbandisscheduledtoperformonSaturdayintheparadeatMagicKingdomatoneof3possibletimes.Amajorconcernwasraisedthatifanythingdelayedourarrival,theycouldpotentiallymissthescheduledperformancetime(nottomentioncomingstraightfroman18+hourbusridedirectlyintoaperformance!).Weattemptedtomovedays,butwithsomanyschoolscompetingforperformanceslots,therewasawaitinglistandnoguaranteethatitcouldbemoved.Soaftertalkingwithourtourcompanies,we'veadjustedthedatesofthetourtodepartafterschoolonThursday,March22andreturnlateafternoononTuesday,March27.LeavingafterschoolonThursdaywillalloweveryonetobewell-restedandreadyforperformances/workshopsaswellastimetorideandexperienceDisney.Studentswillnowmissonedayofclasses,butwillreturnadayearlierandbewithfamilyforanadditionaldayofspringbreak.(NotethatwhenthetourwasoriginallyproposedtotheSchoolBoardlastspring,werequesteditinerariesleavingeitherThursday,March22orFriday,March23.WewereinitiallyconfidentindepartingonFriday,butDisney'sschedulingnowrequiresthatwedepartonthe22nd.)Asmorespecifictimesanddetailsbecomeavailable,wewilladdthemtoouritinerary.Whatwecancommunicatesofaristhefollowing:
