Speaking to an audience of roughly 120Burnaby Board of Trade members andguests, Federal Immigration Minister JasonKenney stressed a key message: Canadaneeds to have jobs available for immigrantscoming to this country.

The Minister’s talk was the highlight ofa reception on November 9th presentedby the Board of Trade in partnership withthe Immigrant Employment Council of BC(IEC-BC). The BBOT regularly presentshigh profile elected officials as part of itsDistinguished Speakers Series.

During his speech Kenney acknowledgedCanada’s relatively well performing economydespite continued global struggles. Henoted that Canada has the highest levelof immigration in the developed world(tied with New Zealand), but that manynew Canadians are underemployed orstuck in “survival jobs.” He commentedthat traditionally Canadians have been toopolite to say no to anyone, and that hascreated problems in the system. He addedthat backlogs are very dysfunctional.

Kenney cited expansion of theProvincial Nominee Program (PNP) as partof the government’s efforts to connect new

immigrants with employers, noting that theprogram also helps with better geographicaldistribution. He also spoke about CanadianExperience Class for international studentsand degree assessments for foreignworkers as a way to validate qualificationsand ensure credentials meet Canadianstandards. English / French languageproficiency was another speaking point forthe Minister, as was an online matchingsystem, which will be designed to letemployers view applications and offer jobsin a more efficient manner.
