The Vodafone Malta Foundation is supporting the English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malta, an international

educational charity with the aim of strenghtening the use of the English Language in Malta. This will eventually

support the main pillars of the country’s economy, all of which depend on good quality English.

“We would like to welcome the Vodafone Foundation as our latest corporate sponsor,” said John De Giorgio, ESU

Malta Chairman. “ESU Malta remains faithful to its fundamental aim to strengthen the use of the English language in

Malta and Gozo. We believe that, given the international exposure of so many sectors of the Maltese economy,

improving the capacity of the Maltese to speak English is an important competitive advantage while maintaining our

Maltese language skills.”

ESU Malta runs programmes in Schools and Universities while providing corporate and individual English education

in the form of English conversation, writing and public speaking courses. With the begenning of the new academic

year, many ESU Malta projects started being provided and these include the Public Speaking Programme, the

Debating Programme and the newly expanded Arm of Support Programme, where over 420 children from the Zabbar

Primary School will be exposed to the English Language in a play environment.

‘Discover Your Voice,’ is a new programme launched earlier this month and offered to all secondary schools and it

has the aim to develop future orators among Malta’s younger generation. Almost 1,500 children will be benefitting

from this programme in the first term of this scholastic year.

“The Vodafone Malta Foundation supports initiatives that integrate the Maltese more fully in society and we feel that

ESU Malta’s commitment, especially through its Arm of Support programme falls in line with the various projects the

Vodafone foundation backs,” said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Vodafone Malta Foundation. “The

Vodafone Malta Foundation, like ESU, recognises the need for individuals to have access to technology and new

media, as well as the ability to speak their voice and deliver messages in clear and persuasive ways.”

Vodafone pre-orders for the iPhone 5

exceed initial supply

Vodafone has announced that pre-orders for the Apple iPhone 5 exceeded expectations and have

proven to be an overwhelming success. Demand for the iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply in the

first four days and while the majority of pre-orders were delivered to customers , many are

scheduled to be delivered in the weeks to follow.

“This is the first time that Vodafone has launched pre-orders a week prior to the official launch date

and it proved to be an overwhelming success,” said Sandro Pisani, Head of Marketing at Vodafone

Malta. “As in other markets, the demand for the iPhone 5 is huge, and interest is sky high. I can

assure our customers that we are all working hard to satisfy the massive demand.”

To manage supply in the best possible way, Vodafone will continue taking pre-orders in all Vodafone

retail stores as more devices will be arriving shortly. The iPhone 5 comes in black and white, 16G,

32G and 64G variants. Every customer buying the iPhone 5 from Vodafone will be supported by the

Vodafone Smartphone Crew, who will be ensuring that every Vodafone customer will be leaving the

Voice, enabling the user to verbally control different functions such as playing a song, setting

the alarm, or activating driving mode. The Samsung Galaxy S III also includes certain smart

Vodafone Malta Foundation supports the Malta Open Dance Spectacular

Friday, 16 Nov 2012, 13:39

The Vodafone Malta Foundation will once again be supporting the 6th Edition of the

International Malta Open Dance Spectacular 2012, a two-day event organised by the Malta

Wheelchair Dancesport Association (MWDA). The event, held under the distinguished

patronage of HE Dr. George Abela is taking place on November 24th and 25th 2012 at the

University Sports Hall in Msida.

“Wheelchair dancing is a sport and art that promotes social integration. This kind of dancing

helps the non-disabled person to get to know the wheelchair user better as a personand not

simply as someone with a disability,” said Ms Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the

Vodafone Malta Foundation. “The Vodafone Malta Foundation supported this event since

the begining since we believe that such events help eliminate many misconceptions about the

abilities of wheelchair users and have the added advantage of encouraging new friendships.”

Wheelchair dancing has been practised for over 27 years in different parts of the world, but

started to feature in Malta in 1999. The Malta Wheelchair Dancesport Association was set up

in 2001 with the aim of teaching people in wheelchairs to dance in a similair format to non-

disabled persons. The Dance Spectacular gives Maltese wheelchair dancers the opportunity

to compete with foreign dancers without the expense of travelling abroad. This competition

educates the general public, shows the ability as opposed to the disability of wheelchair users

and integrates all dancers, non-disabled and disabled, in a competition atmosphere.

“With more than 12 countries taking part in this year’s competition, including couples coming

from as far away as Brazil, we are very much looking forward for people to see the great

skills of these dancers,” said Pippa Roberts, President of the MWDA. “We appreciate the

support of the Vodafone Foundation, helping Malta in hosting such championships, now

recognized as one of the major competitions in the world of wheelchair dance. This year we

will also see the first ever international integrated team match, another first for Malta.”

Tickets can be bought at the door at €12 each. Children under 10 years of age will enter free

Malta Lace Competition: protecting an age-

old tradition

Pictured above: Winner Carmen Ellul (second from right) together with (from left) HSBC’s

de Piro

“Maltese lace stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest. Each year, we are noticing

improvements in the quality and originality in the works entered into the Malta annual

competition,” said Marquis de Piro while showing an impressive example of Maltese black

silk bobbin lacework.

Marquis de Piro organises the annual Malta Lace Competition with the HSBC Malta

Foundation’s support. This year the competition ceremony at Casa Rocca Piccola, again

brought together lace makers, collectors, and other interested persons to celebrate the talent,

originality, and skill of Maltese lace makers.

“While we strive to safeguard its traditional elements, Maltese lace making is an ever

evolving craft. We embrace this as a positive development, and one that is reflected in the

diversity of the competition’s categories,” said Marquis de Piro. “This year we had 19 classes

on display, comprising various techniques, materials, types of clothing and other artefacts.

These innovations help to keep this art form alive in a way that can be enjoyed by a wide

audience and indeed by future generations.”

The competition includes a ‘Children’s Category’ for participants under the age of sixteen.

While monetary prizes also went out to the best submission in this group, all participants

under 16 received token gifts as an encouragement to the young competitors and to reward

their interest in lace making.

“The competition aims to bolster this important part ofMalta’s historical and cultural heritage

keeping it alive and well,” explained Margaret Farrugia, Chief Executive Officer of the

competition. “This event is encouraging finer and more elaborate works as well as growing

enthusiasm. We thank the HSBC Malta Foundation for its ongoing support since the very first

lace competition at Casa Rocca Piccola in 2006.”

The Casa Rocca Piccola is home to an extensive collection of fine lace, many examples of

which are to be showcased in Nicholas de Piro’s forthcoming book, entitled Ladies of Malta

in Extravagant and Spectacular Maltese Lace. It is scheduled to hit the bookshops in time for

Christmas 2012; this illustrated publication will feature a variety of distinguished professional

and Maltese female personalities wearing the very finest of Maltese lace as can be seen from
