Programs of vocational service are those which seek to improve business relations while improving the quality of trades, industry, commerce and the professions. Rotarians understand that each person makes a valu- able contribution to a better society through daily activities in a business or profession. Vocational Service is frequently demonstrated by offering young people career guidance, occupational information and assistance in making vo- cational choices. Some clubs sponsor high school career conferences. Many recognize the dignity of employment by honoring exemplary service of individuals working in their communities. The 4 -Way Test and other ethi- cal and laudable business philosophies are often promoted among young people entering the world of work. Vocational talks and discussion of busi- ness issues are also typical vocational service programs at most clubs. Regardless of the ways that Vocational Service is expressed, it is the banner by which Rotarians “recognize the worthiness of all useful occu- pations” and demonstrate a commitment to “high ethical standards in all businesses and professions.” That’s why the Second Avenue of Service is fundamental to every Rotary club.

Attendance: 18 rotarians; 1 guest, Joan Fischer, Director of the Medina County Nutriton Center.

Past President Jean Callaway called the meeting to order, in the absence of Pres. Danner. Tracy Staten informed everyone of the upcoming Health Fair to be held October 22, which will include a health screening and flu shots. Chris Kailipaka informed everyone that it is the last weekend to purchase tickets for the dinner theater set for October 9, 10 & 11. Jean reminded everyone about the golf tournament October 10 and that we all need to talk to our sponsors and get some teams registered. A’lann informed everyone of the upcoming homecoming festivities which includes coffee time with the superintendent at Hondo Café on the 29th and the parade and pep rally on the 30th. Russ Renard introduced our speaker, Rose Rine with AACOG. She is the director of the aging program. They provide transportation for the elderly to their doctor appointments and most any other place they need to go. She informed us that we need to get out and talk to our legislators to get programs to the rural areas. AACOG’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of all residents of the Alamo region. They cover 13 counties at this time. Their Aging and Disability Resource Center provides help to seniors with accessing their federal benefits. They provide long time care programs and support centers with the United Way, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Texas Health and Human Services, Texas Department of Aging & Disability Agen-cy, ets. They help seniors get the service and support they need to remain in their homes. These services are available for persons 60 and over. Rose Ryan drew the winning ticket for us, but Debbie Southwell unfortu-nately was not a winner (so we still have a chance!).
