Punctuating complex sentences 101 Independent clause dependent clause.
Nathan fell because Seth tripped him.
Dependent clause, independent clause. Because Seth tripped him, Nathan fell.
How come? When the subordinating conjunction is separating the clauses in the middle, it signals a transition to a new idea; no comma is needed. When the clauses aren’t separated by a sub. conj., the comma signals the transition.
Context Clues
Similarity – Lou went to the haberdashery to find a new suit.
Contrast – Lou needed to go to the haberdashery, even though he had a closet full of clothes.
Inference – The haberdashery was Lou’s favorite place. He loved to shop for classic styles of clothing.
Example for disdain
I planned an afternoon of surf, sun, and fun for Lord Tennyson, but the ungrateful wretch’s howls and hisses revealed his unfathomable disdain.
