Aim: Helping students to use a wider range of vocabulary when relatingstories
Activity: Rewriting exchanges
Level: Intermediate to advanced

The first time you relate the exchange, only use 'he /she said', maybe adding a 'he / she replied' to add some variation. Thesecond time you relate the exchange use a selection of vocal verbs andadverbs (see list below) to spice things up.
* As a class, ask students to relate the differences between the twopresentations. Be sure to not only ask for vocabulary, but also impressionssuch as 'The story was more interesting because you used different verbs.',or 'It seemed the mood of the speakers changed.', etc.
* Hand out the exercise / vocal verbs / adverbs list. In order to checkunderstanding, model some sentences using the various verbs / adverbsmodulating your voice to help with understanding.
* Ask students to choose three verbs / adverbs and write a sentence. Goaround the room, or in small groups and have students practice theirsentences modulating their voices to emphasize understanding.

un brouillon. Elle risquerait alors dtre le reflet dune pensedsorganise, ou dune argumentation embrouille ;
* nutilisez pas de crayon papier, ni dencre de couleur rare, comme leturquoise. Le bleu convient parfaitement, surtout si cest de lencreeffaable. Munissez-vous dun effaceur, dont lutilisation est trs pratique,et parfois prfrable au correcteur blanc. Souvent les candidats attendentquil sche et oublient de faire leur correction !
* enfin rappelez-vous que le correcteur devra corriger de nombreusescopies dans un laps de temps trs limit ; aussi apprciera-t-il vos efforts deprsentation et de clart, ce qui peut avoir une rpercussion plus ou moinsconsciente de sa part sur votre notation.

a) What kind of text is it?Its a narrative; an article; a dialogue; a diary; a letter.b) What type of narrative is it?Its a first person narrative; its a third person narrative; it sounds like an
excerpt taken from an autobiographical novel.
c) How are the characters related?Comment les personnages sont-ils relis entre eux ? Quels sont les liens
qui les unissent : amicaux, familiaux, professionnels ?d) What are the relationships between the main characters?They get on well with each other. They cant stand each other. They can
barely bear each others company. They can hardly communicate.e) Choose the best title(s).Ici, vous pouvez choisir un seul titre ou plusieurs parmi la liste propose.f) Find information in the text.Trouvez plusieurs informations dans le texte (sing. = a piece of
information).g) What do the following pronouns refer to?Exemple : "I" refers to the narrator. "They" refers to the group of
students.
-

par : un petit village loin de tout. Les italiques sont frquentes enanglais. Exemple : "I want to leave."

Sil sagit dune conversation tlphonique, prcisez-le : Aftermeeting her students for the first time, Helen Reed phones her best friendAmanda to let her know about her first impressions.
Hi, Amanda!Is that you, Helen?, Amanda asked excitedly. So, tell me about yourstudents: what are they like?Well, theyre quite nice, actually, Helen answered, sounding tired butrelieved.
Modulez les rpliques laide de courtesindications scniques, mises entre parenthses :AMANDA (anxious): They didnt drive you mad, did they?HELEN (laughing): Not at all, dont worry! Theyre very well-mannered.
Votredernire rplique peut servir de conclusion :I have to go now, Amanda, Helen said. See you soon!She hung up.La lettre
Voici un exemple de consigne qui peut vous tre propos : "Write a letter tothe main character to give him some advice as to whether he should stay orhe should move from his home town". Vous pourrez galement jouer le rledun des personnages crivant un protagoniste de lhistoire : "Imagine youare the main character and you are writing a letter to your aunt, fifteenyears later, to let her know how you feel about what happened."

* connatre le rdacteur qui peut tre vous-mme ou lun despersonnages du texte ;
* savoir qui vous adressez cette lettre : lidentit du rcepteur ;* matriser la teneur du message quelle contient, qui justifie sa rdaction;
* avoir une ide assez prcise du contexte, cest--dire des circonstancestemporelles, gographiques, vnementielles dans lesquelles elle sinscrit ;
* comprendre les relations qui lient lmetteur et le rcepteur, et lesenjeux psychologiques de cette lettre sur lentente entre les deuxpersonnages pour parvenir mieux dfinir le ton de cet crit.
Cher Monsieur Smith = Dear Mr Smith.
* Salutations :Dear Julian, My dearest Anne, My darling Fiona.
* Lintroduction :Im writing to let you know that; Im very sorry I havent written for solong, and hope you will forgive me; Its such a long time since weve been
in touch that I felt I must write a few lines.* Prendre cong :
Ive got to go now; My son sends his love to all of you; Say hello to yourmother for me; Give my best regards to your family.
* Conclure :Im looking forward to hearing from you; I cant wait to see you soon;
With love from... (amitis); Best wishes; Kindest regards. Plus familier : Loveto all; All the best; Take care; Cheerio. Plus affectueux : Lots of love from;Much love, as always; Affectionately.

Now you are ready to put pen to paper and as the saying goes: The pen ismightier than the sword!Le sujet de type narratif
Ce type de sujet peut tre li au texte (Carry on with the story as if youwere the writer, and imagine an end, Imagine what happened before thestory starts) ou votre exprience personnelle (Can you think of an eventwhich changed your life or the life of somebody you know?, Write aboutsomething strange or unexpect-ed you suddenly discovered in yourchildhood, and the consequences it had for you).
Should mobile phones be banned in public places?,Money cant buy happiness. Discuss.), ou bien donner votre opinionpersonnelle sur un sujet prcis (What do you personally think of humancloning?, Would you be ready to go and work abroad?
-

Votre introduction doit comporter trois tapes : la premire phrase annoncela thmatique du devoir (Some scientists have recently claimed that theyhad succeeded in cloning the first human embryo.), la deuxime introduitla problmatique en reprenant les termes du sujet (The uproar caused bythis announcement clearly shows that human cloning is a controversialissue.). La troisime annonce le plan de votre devoir (Indeed, even thoughthis scientific breakthrough can be a source of hope for researchers, itnevertheless raises serious ethical concern.).
(It can be interesting, fascinating, well-paid, not too tiring,enriching, fulfilling...)
