COMPARE AND CONTRAST Remember: When you compare and contrast two or more things, you show how they are alike
and different.
• Clue words, such as like or as show comparisons. Words such as but or however show contrast. • Sometimes, writers do not use clue words when they compare and contrast things.
Read the story and then answer the questions.
Plagiarism, taking another writer’s work and presenting it
as one’s own, is becoming a big problem in schools.
Even though students have a very good chance at
getting caught, they still plagiarize. In elementary and
secondary schools, students are typically punished by a
failing grade, being kicked off teams, or being
suspended from school. At the college level, however,
the penalties can become more serious. Students are
often expelled from the college after only one instance
of plagiarism. Teachers and professors usually know, or
have a strong suspicion, that a student is plagiarizing.
The student who does his or her own work typically shows
improvement slowly over time. A student who copies
someone else’s work may turn in one assignment that is of poor quality, and then the next week
hand in writing that could win prizes. Internet sites that sell or give away finished writing assignments
tempt many students who cheat. Like these students, teachers have started using the Internet.
Web sites are now available where teachers can upload a student’s paper and find out if it has
been written by anyone else anywhere in the world.
1. How is plagiarism usually dealt with in elementary and secondary schools?
______________________________________________________________________________________________
2. How is plagiarism usually dealt with at the college level?

3. What is the difference between the work of students who do and don’t plagiarize?

5. How has the Internet made it possible for teachers to catch plagiarism?

SEQUENCE is the order in which events take place, from first to last.
• Clue words such as first, next, and then may show sequence in a story or article, but not always.
Other clues are dates and times of day.
• Sometimes two events happen at the same time. Clue words that show this are meanwhile and
in that same year.
In November 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th
President of the United States. This angered many people
in the South, as Lincoln promised to end slavery, which
was necessary for a large part of the Southern economy.
In anticipation of Lincoln’s election, South Carolina had
already begun preparations to secede from the Union. In
December 1860, South Carolina followed through with its
threat. Then, in January 1861, Mississippi also seceded
from the Union. That same month, Florida, Georgia,
Louisiana, and Alabama seceded. Abraham Lincoln’s
inauguration was held on March 4, 1861. On April 12, the
Confederate army attempted to overtake Fort Sumter.
This attack on a federal military post marked the
beginning of the Civil War. By June, five more Southern
states had seceded from the Union.
1. How many states in all seceded from the Union?
____________________________________________________________________________________
2. What events took place after South Carolina seceded from the Union?

AUTHOR’S PURPOSE
• The author’s purpose is the reason or reasons the author has for writing.
• An author may write to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or to express ideas and feelings.
Read the following passage. Then answer the questions below.
Traditional Navajo foods that are still enjoyed today include mutton, corn, and fry bread made
from flour. This bread is similar to a Mexican tortilla. Fry bread is mostly flat, but
puffy in places. This delicious bread can be eaten plain, stuffed with a filling, or
dipped into stews. Fry bread is easy to make. If you want to try Navajo fry bread,
you will need flour, salt, baking powder, powdered milk, and water. Follow a
recipe and form the dough into little floured patties. These are to be fried in a
pan in about one inch of oil. When the dough puffs up, the fry bread is ready to enjoy.
