Vocabulary Warm Up Spring had barely begun. A red-winged blackbird flew high above

the meadow. Turtles were basking in the morning sun. They were happy to be out of the deep mud from the bottom of the pond where they spent the winter. The scent, or smell, of violets told the animals that the cold was over. “Time to make my nest,” said the blackbird. The blackbird knew she must disguise her nest in the tall grass.

She made her nest in the shape of an open cup. It was woven between stems of spring grass. The grass was still soggy from the spring rains.

A hare, a kind of rabbit, hopped through the new grass. She sat near a stump wiating for her young to catch up to her.

the warm sun was high in the sky. All the animals felt a little drowsy. The turtles napped. The rabbits slept cuddled up to their mother. Only the black bird did not nap. She was busy laying her eggs.
