1 2.04 Read the text. Which sentence is true?

a) Linda Wolfe has been married many times and is now happy to live alone. b) She enjoys asking men out and wants to get married again. c) She may get married again because she feels a bit lonely.

American grandmother, Linda Wolfe, is looking for her true love – for the twenty-fourth time. Linda has already walked down the aisle twenty-three times – and that’s a world record! Linda first fell in love fifty-two years ago and got married when she was only sixteen. She was married for seven years, and it was her longest and happiest marriage. Since then, her relationships have been more difficult. Over the years she has had a variety of husbands – a church preacher, a plumber, an electrician, several musicians, and a prisoner, to name but a few. Her shortest marriage lasted only thirty-six hours. And she married and divorced one man, Jack Gourley, three times. Although they were madly in love, they had lots of arguments and kept breaking up with each other. One day, after getting divorced yet

again, she collected all her wedding and engagement rings and threw them in the rubbish bin. ‘And they were beautiful rings,’ she said. According to Linda, she has never asked a man out. They always ask her! But she isn’t sure why: ‘I’ve tried to figure it out and I can’t.’ Linda has appeared on many TV and radio shows and she has given many interviews. Now she is sixty-eight and lives in a nursing home in Oregon, USA. She has been alone for twelve years now. She hasn’t been out with a man since her last divorce. ‘But I would get married again,’ she said, ‘because, you know, it gets lonely.’

Reading

1 2.06 Read the text. Why did Alec write his book? Choose the correct answer.

a) Because he didn’t know how to talk to girls. b) Because he realized that many boys had trouble talking to girls. c) Because he doesn’t have a girlfriend.

2 Read the text again and put the events in the correct order.

a) He sold one copy of the book at school. b) He appeared on television. c) The media heard about his dating tips. d) He saw boys at school having trouble talking to girls. e) An American company published his book. f) He wrote his book.

3 Answer the questions.

1 What advice does Alec give about a boy’s appearance? 2 Why does Alec say it isn’t a good idea to pay a girl a lot of compliments? 3 What warning does Alec give about pretty girls? 4 Why does Alec think it’s better if the girl does most of the talking?

Did you know? Women talk almost three times as much as men. The average woman says about 20,000 words in a day – 13,000 more than the average man.

social studies link

Alec Greven is only a nine-year-old schoolboy, but he has already written his first book. And an American company has just published it. This is amazing enough, but more amazing is the title: How to talk to girls! Alec started writing the book after watching the boys in the playground making lots of mistakes with girls. Alec sold the only copy for $5 at the school book fair. But he became famous when the local media heard about his dating tips for boys. Since publishing the book, he has appeared on national TV to give his excellent advice.

Here are some of his tips:

• Don’t show off.

• Comb your hair.

• Don’t wear scruffy clothes.

• Don’t pay too many compliments as you will appear desperate.

• Accept that sometimes it takes years to make a girl like you.

• Be careful of pretty girls.

In chapter three he warns: ‘Some pretty girls are cold-hearted when it comes to boys.’ His advice is: ‘The best choice for most boys is a regular girl.’ Alec thinks that the best way to approach a girl is to keep it simple. ‘If I say “hi” and you say “hi” back, we’re probably off to a good start,’ he says. He believes that showing interest is the key to winning a girl’s heart. ‘Your goal is to make sure that she does most of the talking, so then you can’t mess up.’ And does Alec have a girlfriend? He thinks he is too young. ‘Dating is for old people – about fifteen or sixteen,’ he said.

Dating is kids’ stuff

Hi Robin,

How are things with you? Sorry I haven’t written for ages – I’ve been very busy recently with exams at school. But they’re over now, and the holidays have begun. I’ve got a part-time job at the local café. It’s hard work, but the money is good. I’m saving up for a holiday – we’re going to France in a couple of weeks.

Enough of me. Do you remember Dave? Well, he’s broken up with Kate and is now going out with Wendy. They seem very happy together. Joe has decided to leave school next summer. He was going to stay on but he says he wants to get a job and start earning some money. The family are all fine. My sister’s passed her driving test and has bought a car.

What have you been up to? Are you still enjoying life in London? We must get together soon. Would you like to come for a visit? You’re welcome any time.

Anyway, say hi to Mark. And write soon with your news.

How many regional languages are spoken in your country? How many languages can you speak?

FAST FACTS• Welsh, a Celtic language, is still spoken in

rural areas of Wales.

• Since 1998, Scotland and Wales have had their own parliaments, with limited powers.

A The original inhabitants of Britain were Celts, who arrived from continental Europe probably in the first millennium BC. During the next 1,500 years there were invasions by Romans, Vikings, Saxons and finally the Normans in 1066. At the time of the Norman invasion, the Celtic peoples lived in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and England was mostly Anglo-Saxon.

B There was almost permanent conflict between England and her Celtic neighbours throughout the Middle Ages. In the thirteenth century the English invaded Wales, but it was not until 1536 that Wales became part of the English state. The English also colonized Ireland and tried to invade Scotland. The Scots, however, remained independent until 1603, when the Scottish King James IV became King James I of England.

C In 1707, the kingdoms of England and Scotland joined and became one country. The United Kingdom of Great Britain was born. Then in 1800 Ireland too became part of the UK. However, Ireland gained independence in 1921. Northern Ireland still remains part of the UK.

D The rivalry between the Celticnations and England is still strong. Luckily, however, this rivalry is now expressed in sports competitions rather than on the battlefield.

E The British flag (usually called the Union Jack) is a combination of three flags: the English, the Scottish and the Irish. (When the flag was introduced in 1603, Wales was already part of the English state, so the Welsh flag was not included.)
