WOMEN’S COFFEE

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10,2018

REDBUD ROOM

COFFEE 10:00 AM, Program 10:30 AM

This month we move in quite a different direction. Our own

resident Mona Mae Waymire will give us a look at Southern

customs as featured in a book titled Dying is No Excuse.

According to Mona Mae, “This book is a deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life

(and death), written by the inveterate hostess, Gayden Metcalfe. She explains

everything you need to know to host an authentic Southern funeral, such as: “Can

you be properly buried without tomato aspic?” “Who prepares the tastier funeral food,

the Methodists or the Episcopalians?” Even if you haven’t been born south of

Omaha (NE), this book will charm and entertain. There also will be food from the

Delta for your refreshments. YOU don’t want to miss this fun and laugh filled

morning! Come early to savor and share the interesting munchies with your friends

and neighbors!

SUNDAY SCHOOL

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14th

BRILL CHAPEL

9:30 AM

Genesis 10:1; 11:10, 27 THE FAMILY TREE

Documenting one's family tree used to involve days of searching through family albums and old courthouse records. Now various websites place historical records at our fingertips. For $99, one such site promises a personal genetic profile from a saliva sample. The site also promises to help you connect with long-lost relatives whose DNA matches yours. In some instances these services have hit a nerve: one reports 2.5 million monthly subscribers and 3 million total customers!

Our ancestry is interesting to us because our family tree gives us a sense of our roots. Individuals and groups identify themselves and understand how they are alike and unlike others by appealing to the past. For example, the writer's mother's parents are the Coxes and Wallaces. The former are descendants of horse thieves from the English town of Bath, who were given the choice of going to prison or emigrating to the American colonies. The latter are descendants of the Scottish reformer William Wallace (of Bravehart fame), who fought for the freedom of his people. While these people lived generations ago, knowing who they are and what they did gives our children a sense of where they came from —but that's a double-edged sword!

HOLIDAY GIFT CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY

Coming home, exhausted, from a long trip one night, all I could think about was falling into my own bed for a good night's sleep. And then I remembered: before I left, I had stripped my bed. The laundry comes back too late for the housekeeper to make the bed. I decided to just sleep on the unmade bed. When

I entered my bedroom, voila! It was made up! As the housekeeper was leaving, she noticed that the laundry had been delivered earlier than usual. She took extra time and made the bed before leaving. Wow!

That is the kind of above and beyond service our staff gives us.

A resident called with another security officer story: One evening, because he was having trouble with his legs, he fell and his wife was not able to lift him. Security was called and came and got him safely into bed. Then, at 5 a.m., he fell again going to the bathroom. Security was called and again, the same employee came and helped. The resident reports that the man was gracious and helpful both times.

These are the actions that we so appreciate and motivate us to give generously to the Holiday Gift Fund so our staff will have a tangible way to experience our gratitude.

Do you have a story to share? I won't be using names, just the situation where a staff person from any department went "above and beyond". Call me at 623-3759. In the meantime, give generously to the Holiday Gift Fund so we can let our staff know in a tangible way how much they are appreciated.

Checks may be made out to ‘Resident Association’ and placed in mail-box # 326.
