VMware Backup - Architecture

● Vembu VMBackup agent will communicate with VMware ESXi production storage and

backup the VM data

● VMBackup works as a proxy between ESXi host and Vembu BDR Backup Server

● VM data will be compressed and encrypted on-fly

● VM data will be compressed and encrypted at rest on Storage Repositories

● Vembu VMBackup agent will communicate with VMware ESXi production storage and

replicate the VM data to another ESXi host

● VMBackup works as a proxy between both the ESXi hosts

● Replicated VM will be in power-off mode

Backup Transport Modes

● Vembu VMBackup proxy agent transfers the VM data through different modes.Based on the agent installation and VMware environment, VMBackup agentautomatically choose any one of following transport mode.

○ Direct SAN Mode○ Hot-Add Mode○ Network Mode

● You can configure the Vembu VMBackup agent to use any one of above modepermanently

Direct SAN Transport Mode

● Vembu VMBackup agent should have access to the SAN environment. It works on bothphysical server/FC or VM/iSCSI.

● VMBackup agent directly read the data which needs to backup from the SAN and sendthem to Vembu BDR Backup Server's storage repositories

Hot-Add Transport Mode

● Vembu VMBackup agent needs to be installed on anyone of the Windows VM running on anESXi host or vCenter.

● During the backup, the virtual disk of the VM will be directly attached to the VM where wehave installed VMBackup agent.

● Then VMBackup agent read the attached disks and send the backup data to Vembu BDRBackup Server's storage repositories.
