Welcome back to Winter! It’s cold outside, the days are

short, the nights long and ski bums worldwide are pumped up for win-ter. Here in the Okanagan we are lucky enough to experience all 4 seasons, equally lucky to have so

many different activities to choose from all year long, but nothing com-pares to the joy and jubilation that hits when the first snows of winter start to fall. At Silver Star the team has enjoyed another successful

season of the Bike Park and all the thrills that it brings. Some great s u m m e r events also graced the lush green slopes and many faces from around the globe were seen browsing the village shops and restau-rants for that

l i t t l e piece of S i l v e r Star to t a k e home as a memen-to. Now that the snow is piling up all ener-gies have shifted to the on-set of winter and the v i s i t o r s

that have already start-ed pouring through the gates look-ing for that magic pow-der turn, the thrill of tub-ing, the scrape of the blade

carving on the frozen pond, or just to absorb the sound of the bells as the horse drawn sleigh goes trot-ting by. Some consider spring as the season that marks the begin-ning, but nothing marks the begin-ning of something so clearly as that first blanket of fresh snow!

There are a number of new things

to enjoy at the resort this year, most notably the new skisilverstar.com that hit the streets on November 7th. A whole new look, increased opportunities to interact, and a much improved system for search-ing and booking accommodation at the resort. Silver Creek Lodge is now under the umbrella of Silver Star Holidays, the resort owned property management division. A new front desk and completely ren-ovated lobby area will greet guests on arrival and those same guests will also have hotel staff on hand 24

hours a day to help with their needs. In the village you’ll be able to find something new at “Out of Bounds” coffee shop which has taken over the former Bean to Cup location on the lower level of the Lord Aberdeen Hotel. Staying well groomed is always a challenge for skiers and snowboarders, but the grooming team and Silver Star will have no problem as two brand new groomers were added to the fleet and hit the trails at the start of the season. The fleet of 8 Pisten Bully groomers is undeniably one of the most up to date and modern in the Canadian ski industry, so the groomed runs we all get to enjoy really are the best they can be.

Winter is the beginning, every

time it snows there is a fresh new start. Get out there and embrace all that is fresh and new both on the slopes and off!

A new look toSilver Star

NordicJoining the

team at Silver Star Mountain Resort this past summer was Guy Paulsen. Guy has a long and positive history with Silver Star, the ski industry, and is nationally respected as an ambas-sador for the sport of skiing. Guy

has a real passion for teaching ski-ing of all kinds. Since coming on board Guy has been busy improv-ing the early season trails, moving the Village trailhead, building a new Nordic grid and formalizing the snowshoe trails. Look for some new programs like the Saturday Nordic Club, Luna Loppet Series, and the Spring Loaded Telemark Weekend. For details check out the Nordic section of the Silver Star website at www.skisilverstar.com

This past summer saw a number of years’ worth of work and pas-sion for snowshoeing formalized to create the Silver Star Mountain Snowshoe Trail System. “There has been a number of local contribu-tors towards these trails. Each of them has brought their passion & skill of snowshoeing forward and for this we are very grateful” said Guy Paulsen, Silver Star Nordic Manager. The snowshoe trail sys-

tem is primarily located amidst the Village Nordic rail system – convenient to a number of vaca-tion homes on the Knoll subdi-vision and from the Village.

There are approximately 16

kilometers of single track and open-multi use snowshoe trails now offered with two official trailheads. Avid snowshoers can purchase their trail pass at the Village Ticket Office, Ski Dazzle Rentals or Tube Town Tickets. People looking try one of North America’s fastest grow-ing winter recreational activities can also rent modern “shoes” from Ski Dazzle Rentals or The Village Ski Shop. Both are locat-

ed conveniently on Main Street in the village center.

For those looking to learn more

about Silver Star’s winter wildlife you will be impressed by the inter-pretive snowshoe tours offered by Roseanne Van Ee and Outdoor Discoveries.

Ben Jackson is the new Events manager at Silver Star Mountain and although new to the position Ben has been working at Silver Star since the winter of 2006 as a snow-board instructor.

Ben originally comes from the south coast of England but now lives with his wife Jamie and son Jacob in Lumby B.C. where he is also a volunteer firefighter.

“I first came to Canada to train as a snowboard instructor in Banff. After spending 3 months there I knew I wanted to make Canada my home. I had heard rumors of Silver Star Mountain and the BC interior on my travels around the world as a snowboarder but it was not until I arrived that I truly understood how

epic this place is.”I met Jamie my wife during that

first winter and well, the rest, as they say is history.”

Ben spent time in the British Army and has more than 10 years of experience in event manage-ment and outdoor activity and instruction.

“I am really excited to take on this new role, it involves all of my skills and passions and working at a place that I love.”

We have a packed Events calen-dar this winter so watch out for:

S6 Sunday, November 27, 2011 - Silver Star Magazine

Let the Games begin!

Silver Star Mountain Resort is very excited to be one of the ven-ues for the BC Winter Games coming to Vernon February 23-26, 2012. The mountain is used to hosting large events and regularly works with the local Alpine and Freestyle Clubs to host athletes from across the province and sometimes across the country, but there is something special about the BC Games. “It’s going to be like hosting a mini Olympics” says Resort Services Manager, Robin Baycroft. The spirit of the Games brings both able-bodied and dis-abled athletes to one grand event

all in the name of sport and competition and the top three participants of each sport receive a medal in an Olympic fashion.

Silver Star is the venue for the Freestyle Skiing, Alpine skiing, and Para-Alpine skiing events. The Freestyle line-up of events is for guys and girls age 13-15 and includes Single Moguls which we are used to seeing on TV, Dual Moguls which pits two skiers head to head on side by side courses (very exciting for com-petitors and spectators) and Big Air…pretty self-explanatory. These

events are great to watch and the best way to see them is on your skis right up close to the action. The Alpine (11-12 year olds) and Para-Alpine (13 – 40 year olds) events are all about going fast and like Freestyle the best way to watch is stand-ing on the side of the ski run on your skis so you can move around. Watch the speedy Giant Slalom on Friday, the ever so exciting Skiercross on Saturday, and the tight turns of Slalom on Sunday.

“What’s different about the BC Games is the camaraderie of the kids as they mix and mingle more than they would at a club or zone level event” comments Rob Tupper of the Vernon Ski Club, and a BC Games ski racing alum-ni. “The kids that participate are 11-12 years old and each Ski Club only has a few of those so the kids are forced to make new friends and quite often these last a long time.” The last time the BC Winter Games were in Vernon was in 1992 and Silver Star Freestyle Coach Tanya Callon was 13 then. “What I remember the most is coming to Vernon and I was the only girl on the Zone 2 team,” said Callon, “We slept on cots in a

school. I was quite nervous at first but I got to meet a lot of other girls and those girls became friends and, to this day, I still keep in touch with a lot of the friends I made in Vernon.”

While the BC Winter Games are going to be an exciting addition to the atmosphere of the resort there will still be lots of room for regular skiers and snowboarders. “The events take place at a historically quiet period for us and other than the event venues the rest of the mountain will not be busy at all” says Baycroft. “It will be a great time as a local to come up and enjoy some of the action and get some great turns in as well!”

Dueck and Douglaswin big at Banff Film Fest

One had a story to tell, the other wanted to help. The Silver Star and Vernon communities have come to know and love Josh Dueck. Josh, a Freestyle ski coach, was injured in a skiing accident, learned he would never walk again, and almost as quickly learned to use a sit ski and got back on the mountain. To many this would be a success, but Josh found new opportunities and through hard work and dedication worked his way to a Silver Medal at the 2010 Paralympic Games in Whistler and then X-Games Gold in 2011. Mike Douglas, known by many as the ‘Godfather of Freeride Skiing’ has recently started making

short films for Salomon Freeski TV. Douglas and Dueck teamed up to tell Josh’s story with an eye to the Banff Film Festival. At the screening on Nov 2nd the film received a standing ovation, “whether the ova-tion was for Dueck himself, or the film, or the film makers, it was tough to tell, but what was certain was that there was a show of apprecia-tion from the crowd.” – Biglines.com

The film “The Freedom Chair”has since been awarded Best Mountain Sports Film and can be seen on the Banff Film Festival Tour this winter or you can watch an edited version at skisilverstar.com

The team at Silver Star wants people who normally only come night skiing to experience the entire mountain and get a true Silver Star experience, so they have launched a new promotion. Night skiing at Silver Star is now $10 per person and guests will enjoy a great rate on night skiing rentals as well as they remain at the previous rate of $10. “Guests will be given a punch card on their first night skiing visit, after four visits they will have earned a

50% off voucher for a day ticket to explore the whole mountain,” says Resort General Manager Michael Sherwood. The program works the same in rentals. “We’re pretty excit-ed by this,” adds Sherwood “it works out that the amount you save off a day ticket you have essentially enjoyed night skiing for free.” The first $10 night skiing opportunity is on January 6th, 2012 and they run every Friday and Saturday night from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

For many a die-hard skier the dream of heli-skiing is just that, a dream, one that in most cases is as unattainable as the Holy Grail. Well no more! Eagle Pass heli-skiing and Silver Star Mountain Resort have teamed up to offer you day heli-skiing right from in the resort. No more requirements for a week-long trip deep into the Monashee’s or Bugaboo’s. You enjoy the slopes of Silver Star one day and climb aboard your very own powder chariot the next.

A day of heli-skiing with Eagle Pass from Silver Star starts at 7:30am when you will get outfitted with the latest Head skis designed especially for heli terrain and condi-tions. At 8 am you head outside for beacon training and a helicopter safety briefing and by 9:30 am you will be airborne on a 12 min flight to the Monashee’s for your day of heli-skiing. For $1175 you’ll ski 6 to 8 runs (11,000 to 17,000 vertical feet) which is more skiing than the com-petitors offer plus you get the added benefit of your own radio and BCA flotation backpack. “What’s really neat about the way we’ll be operating out of Silver Star is that by flying a Bell 212 with 10 guests and two guides we can split into two smaller groups when we reach the skiing terrain and challenge each group appropriately,” says Matt Pinto, Director of Ski Operations for Eagle Pass. “It’s what a lot of other operations would charge a premium for, and it’s our regular offer!”

A great way to make sure you are ready to get the most out of your heli-skiing adventure is to take a ‘Powder Prep’ lesson with the Silver Star Snowsport School. You will learn what to do a little different with wide powder skis under foot, gain confidence skiing glades and steep terrain, and get an idea of what you can expect from the helicopter and guide experience. Of course if you love the work your Ski Pro is doing they would be more than appreciative for you to take them along so they can continue the lesson in the big mountains!

It is recommended that you are a strong inter-mediate or advanced skier/boarder and don’t mind venturing off the groomed slopes on powder days at the resort. Most slopes are between 20 and 40 degrees, and when conditions allow you will hit the steep slopes. If you have fun skiing runs like Gypsy Queen and Sunny Ridge on a powder day or can’t get enough of runs like Chute 5, Holy Smokes, and Attridge then you are ready to heli-ski. heli-ski.

Best Ski-in, Ski-out.The Foot Doctor is in

Do you want to ski with warm, comfortable feet this season? If you suffer from cold feet, numb toes, or have any “hot” spots from your ski or snowboard boots come and see the boot fitting team at Ski Dazzle. Our boot fitting team includes a New Zealand registered podiatrist and a Ski Resort Operations (boot fitting) graduate; both attended ‘Master Fit University’ this year to work and learn with other industry leading profession-als. They expanded their knowl-edge on current equipment trends and built on the product that is offered in Ski Dazzle. With a depth of knowledge the team is able to provide individual service that is unlike any other in the Vernon area.

New toys - The new Ultracam machine used to stretch ski boots in the most specific of areas with-out compromising the integrity of the boot.

A message on foot beds - A

custom foot bed is a piece of equip-ment that provides the correct amount of support for your foot as well as providing comfort and increasing performance. It can often be the missing link in a ski or snow-board experience. A custom foot bed will also assist in correctly align-ing a person’s lower leg. Think of it like having a wheel alignment done on your car. If the alignment is not correct then you end up compen-sating and overworking our mus-cles, ligaments and joints causing early fatigue and possible injury.

Give the Giftof Silver Star

Tis’ the season to be giving, and what better gift to give than the gift of winter? The kids want to go tubing, the grandson wants to go snowboard-ing, maybe someone you know needs a new pair of goggles, or what about a gift certificate for a dinner out as a thank you for that client who came through big for you…the options really are endless. Gift Certificates for Silver Star are available at Sun Valley Source for Sports and Attridge Ski & Board in $20, $50, $85, and $100 denominations.

Lift tickets to get people out there and enjoying the slopes are also

great gift ideas and they are available now and right through the entire ski season at Sun Valley, Attridge, Stussi, Olympia, Sport Mart, Sport Chek, and Outdoor Exposure. These handy little vouchers are redeemed at the ticket office at the mountain and come in ‘Books of 5’ or as singles.

If you’re not sure what to get as a gift this year try giving the gift of Silver Star!!
