The world's leading glassware manufacturer - Lui-gi Bormioli - was founded in 1946 and was ledto international prominence by Mr. Luigi Bormi-
oli. Located in the region of Parma, northern Italy, halfwaybetween Bologna and Milan, the company and theBormioli family continue to follow the founder’s mis-sion: a commitment to great design, traditional Ital-ian craftsmanship and new-age glassmaking techno-logy to create beautiful glassware of the highest qua-
lity. Luigi Bormioli rivals fine crystal in appearanceand elegance, but is affordably priced and widelyavailable.
As Italian glassmakers go, Luigi Bormioli is rela-tively young, but the company’s devotion to design aes-thetics and glass craftsmanship are rooted in Italian glass-making methods that have flourished on the Venetian island ofMurano since the Middle Ages. While Venice symbolizes glassartistry of the highest order, the lasting contribution of Muranoglassmakers was the creation of a clear, brilliant glass calledcristallo. In time, their once-secret processes spread across
Italy and eventually to all of Europe.Luigi Bormioli brand glassware, all lead-free, can be found in most
major retail stores across the US as well as in Canada. From thebeginning of the company, to the present, Luigi Bormioli has been com-
mitted to the purest sands, potash and other materials used in the manu-facture of high-quality glass.
Most of the company’s glassware is made at the Luigi Bormi-oli glassworks in Parma, while some items are manufac-tured by skilled artisans in glassworks in Germany, Turkeyand China.
In order to produce glass of the highest quality, the com-pany prefers to manufacture its products from thepurest of materials and not recycled glass, but also has certain collections that are madefrom recycled product.

FUTRONICTRAINING CENTRE EXTENDED
Developers and engineers can now take advan-tage of a new IS training section at the futronic
Training Centre. The machine is intended not only forcustomer training but also as a playground and test lab-oratory. In future, futronic hopes to take on a moreactive role in process development.
The production machine is designed to be adaptable –at least approximately – to the real conditions prevailingat the customer’s facility. It makes a perfect complementto computer simulations and test set-ups. The advan-tages are undeniable: “For one thing, we can now offercustomers taking part in external training the kind ofenvironment with which they are familiar from theirown companies,” explains Wolfgang Lachmann, manag-ing director of futronic with responsibility for develop-ment and production. “For another, if an advanced userwants to be taught certain details about the machine, forexample how to programme special cycles, we will be
able to reproduce them more easily in future. In otherwords, our engineers will be better placed to understandthe problem and find a quick solution.” The machine isalso used for internal training to provide a deeper insightinto processes.
A further objective is that developers and engineersshould have access to a “playground and test laborato-ry,” as it were, in which they can “investigate the inter-action of the machine and the control system underauthentic conditions,” Lachmann continues. In themedium term, futronic hopes to take on a more activerole in process development in collaboration with cus-tomers and engineering companies.
Although the training section is not absolutely new, itis as good as because it has never been used to actuallyproduce. With its triple gob function and parallel closingmechanisms for the moulds and the servo proportionalvalves, it certainly conforms to the latest state of the art.
futronic GmbH is one of the world’s top three suppli-ers in the field of complex automation solutions forplant and equipment manufacturers in the glass produc-tion industry. The company has grown considerably inrecent years: a team of 61 staff currently support around900 installations worldwide.

GLASS FIBERGLOBAL MARKET REPORT
By 2017, the world glass fiber market is expected toreach 8.5 million tons, according to a new report avail-able from companiesandmarkets.com, with increasingdemand for glass fiber coming from niche applications.Post-recession and the emerging economies of the AsiaPacific market are representing strong growth opportu-nities, particularly from a construction perspective.
Asia-Pacific, Europe and the US are the dominantgeographical markets in the glass fiber market, withChina holding over 50% of global glass fiber produc-tion capacity due to lower pricing.
This study splits the product segments of the maturingglass fibers market into glass wool and textile glass fiber.
Glass wool is used widely in the construction indus-try, although there is increased demand for the fiberwithin the advanced technology industries, such as air-craft, automotive, and electronics sectors. Textile glassfibers find applications in numerous sectors, and thereis strong potential from within the telecommunicationsand electrical markets.
The markets are further segmented by end-use, e.g.for glass wool: housing construction, commer-cial/industrial/infrastructural, industrial/commercialequipment, and others.
The glass fiber market is highly competitive andconsolidated in nature, with just six companies holdingnearly three-quarters of the market in terms of produc-tion. Mergers and acquisitions are an important strate-gy adopted by industry participants, as there is limitedopportunity for differentiation.
A number of key glass fiber market players are pro-filed, including Guardian Fiberglass Inc., Knauf,Owens Corning Inc., and Uralita Group.
The 471-page report, published in August 2011, pro-vides a detailed analysis of the glass fiber market, incor-porating statistical data from 2003-2017. Geographicmarkets analyzed include the Asia Pacific, Canada,Europe, Japan, Latin America, Middle East and US.
The report covers market landscape, key players andtheir products, trends and barriers/drivers to growth, aswell as explaining production processes.LUBROTECH SOLUTIONS - Via Torino, 521 - Ivrea (TO) - Italy

dedicated to supply the fragrance, enamel and cosmeticmarkets in general, thus continuing to consolidate its pro-ductivity through new machinery.
The new production line began regular operations 26August at Vitro Cosmos.
“Vitro decided to make the adjustments necessary toenhance the production capacity of one of its 26 produc-tion lines in Cosmos in order to meet its customers’requirements,” said Alejandro Becker, Operations V.P. atVitro Containers.
According to Eduardo Armas, manager at VitroCosmos, the plant increases its unit production capacityby 15% by launching this new production line.
“For its operation, the new line requires four addition-al employees in the transformation area, as well as 24more people at the cold end. This new team joined a totalworkforce of 2,800 people at Cosmos,” he said.
Juan Farías, Vitro Containers Technology director, stresses the importance of enhancing the capacity of theproduction lines for certain high-volume products in cos-metics and fragrances.
“We had to take the step to integrate more productivemachinery and that is why it was developed jointly withinput from the commercial, manufacturing, logistics andtechnology areas to coordinate a project that expandedcapacity at Cosmos,” he said.
Shlomo Frymerman, general manager for theMedicinal and Fragrance business at Vitro Containers, states that this project reinforces the company’s commit-ment to supply customers’ current and future needs in atimely manner through greater flexibility in the continu-ous development of technology modernization projects toincrease the productive capacity.

“We are very busy,” said James Hart, the new financedirector. “The biggest pressures are cost pressures ratherthan customer pressures. Energy is a big cost. It’s a big partof our business.”
Energy costs have more than doubled on the open mar-ket since 2009, and, alongside rising energy costs, the com-pany also faces a challenge common to many manufactur-ers – a shortage of skills in the labour market.
“Engineers are still very thin on the ground. Finding ashopfloor person with the right skills is very difficult,” saidHenderson.
The company has found success by taking on appren-tices and equipping them with glassmaking skills, as wellas sponsoring a new recruit through an engineering degreecourse. Henderson said the negative image of British man-ufacturing over the last couple of decades has made it hard-er to encourage young people into the sector.
“British manufacturing does have good careers to offer,”he stressed. “It does have good prospects.”
According to Henderson, Allied Glass is “a good, solid UK manufacturer, growing in output and growingin UK jobs”.

CZECH REPUBLICREVIVAL OF THE GLASS INDUSTRY
After a series of major failures and bankruptcies, mostly affected by the crisis associated with the
closure of large enterprises, and the firing thousands ofemployees, the Czech glass industry is giving sure signsof recovery.
The most visible example of this is a substantial expan-sion of production of the Preciosa glass factory inJablonec nad Nisou. In fact, the company, which is one ofthe world’s largest producers of cut crystal, is looking torecruit glassmakers again. The company employs about130 people at present and, after expansion of production, this figure will reach 530.
In 2006, when production in Jablonec nad Nisoureached record highs, the company produced almost 4.5thousand tons of glass annually. After the expansion, scheduled for completion in 2013, production should riseto 10 thousand tons.
Preciosa is said to be the only Czech glass companytrying to significantly enter the Chinese market. In 2010,Chinese consumers acquired Czech glass worth almostUSD 5 million, and Czech jewellery and fashion jew-ellery for about USD 200 thousand.
The revival of the Czech glass industry is also con-firmed by other manufacturers.
Sklopisek Strelec, which produces glass sand, over-came the impact of the economic crisis at the end of lastyear and increased revenue by 32%, with profit increas-ing 11%.
With regards to the bankrupt glassworks of BohemiaCrystalex Trading (BCT) and Porcela Plus, three yearsafter the fall, around 3.1 thousand people are now work-ing there, less than half of the 7,000 employees workingin the companies during the crisis of 2008. These firmsare, however, already generating revenues, although sig-nificantly lower than before.
Former glassware manufacturer Kavalier, based inSázava near Benesov, now known as Kavalierglass, has, over the past few months called approximately 150employees back to work.
Sklo Bohemia in Svetla nad Sazavou near HavlickuvBrod, operating under the name Crystalite Bohemia, nowhas four furnaces in use, and 500 employees. Moreover, the company also expects to start up a fifth furnace at thebeginning of 2012.
The Crystal Bohemia Podebrady glass factoryemploys 320 people, and is constantly adding new staff.“The plant has continuous production and no shortage oforders,” said owner Pavel Louda.

Combi-Glass 2000:the ‘all in one’ shrinkhooding system
he growth of Thimon isattributable to the develop-ment of plastic films foroverwrapping. Shrink and
then stretch, these films appearedat the end of the 1960s. Nearlyfour decades of close cooperationwith film manufacturers have pro-vided Thimon with invaluableexperience in mastering these twotechnologies.
With over 30 years of Researchand Development in this field,Thimon has registered about 100patents covering all processes. Asa leading company, Thimonexpands its market on the basis ofan average of three major innova-tions per year.
STANDARD AND ADAPTEDSOLUTIONS FOR EVERY KINDOF CONFIGURATIONWrapping processes
Stretch or shrink? A technologi-cally fundamental choice.
Thimon was at the beginning ofboth these technologies, which itapplies to all types of overwrappingprocesses. Stretch saves cost andspace, while shrink provides addi-tional product retention, full weath-erproofing and higher speed.
Total expertiseThimon is the only designer-man-
ufacturer to offer a complete rangeof machines using every type oftechnology for overwrapping withplastic films, regardless of whetherthey are shrink or stretch.
IndustriesContinuously responding to the
specific characteristics and require-ments of each market, Thimon iscontinuously developing its experi-ence and expertise to respondpromptly and successfully to eachand every kind of clients’ and mar-ket demands for the:• food industry;• glass and packaging industries;• paper industry;• building industry;• chemical industry;• home appliances industry;• other industries.
NEW PRODUCTSCombi-Glass
In collaboration with glassma-kers, Thimon has developed amachine dedicated to the glassindustry: the Combi-Glass. Thismachine ensures that pallets loadedwith glass bottles are shrink wrapped
in the best way possible. Regroupinghooding and shrinking operations injust one process in a minimum floorspace, it can handle 90 pallets perhour and guarantees perfect packag-ing. The air blown during the shrink-ing cycle to avoid wrinkles can easi-ly be sucked out at the end of theshrinking cycle just before heat-seal-ing the bottom sheet. Result: a beau-tiful air tight and safe packagingwhatever the pallet type is.
Top-GlassThimon also supplies its Top-
Glass system to give extra top pro-tection required for outside storageor if the pallets are stacked. Top-Glass applies a shrink wrapped plas-tic top-sheet after shrink hooding.
Moreover, available on theCombi-Glass machine, as well as onits whole range, Thimon has createdand patented the most significantinnovation of the past year: the coldsealing process.
The hood is sealed prior to beinglaid on the load, providing coolingtime for sealing. The sealed hood ison separators and is handled onlyafter a cooling time that has no influ-ence on production rate and speed.
With others standard machines, sealing is carried out just before theapplication of the hood on the pallet, often resulting in holes and tears. This patented Thimon device elimi-nates this kind of risk completely, thus enabling to obtain perfectwaterproof sealing. The cold sealingsystem is used by the major playersof the glass industry with completesatisfaction. ■
Thimon offers quality, not only in products and
manufacturing procedures, but also in the service it
provides to clients, in terms of technical advice, trials,
solutions and, of course, after-sales services.
Due to the increasing automation of handling
processes in the glass industry, high quality film
protection on palletized loads has become essential
to provide aesthetic appearance, easier
transportation, greater load stability and simplified
storage, with full weather protection. Thimon has
been a partner of this industry for over 40 years.

plant improve its productivity. Theyinstalled the totally enclosed shaft-mounted speed reducer, the Baldor-Dodge Motorized Torque-Arm II, aproduct that has delivered the relia-bility the engineers were looking for.
PRODUCTION ISSUESIn the past, belted shaft-mounted
reducers were used on bucket eleva-tors moving glass through the initialstages of the process, which includegrinding and pulverizing.
In this environment, the glassgrain dust, even in minimal amounts,is abrasive to rubber belts, sheavesand sprockets.
Bob Schult, plant productionmanager, says the belts would wearquickly and then begin to slip, cre-ating a constant maintenance issue.Belts would have to be re-tensioned
regularly, but even with the extratime spent to keep the product run-ning, they would go through a set ofbelts on each unit about every threeto six months.
“It’s not just the expense of thebelts, it’s the expense of shuttingdown to allow our maintenancestaff to make the change,” explainsSchult. “We tried to monitor beltsthrough a structured preventivemaintenance programme, but Iwould say there was a good 30 percent of the time we would havebelt issues that would cause usunplanned downtime. Dealingwith the problem was costly andtime consuming.”
The issues of uptime and reliabil-
ity are critical to the plant, accordingto Muscatine Plant Manager GlennAmundson. He explains that theplant operates 24/7, 360 days a year,to meet the demand for its product, and unplanned downtime disruptsthe beadmaking process.
“Once the raw material comesinto the plant and we start theprocess of making glass beads, there is limited storage capacity inany of the process areas along theway,” explains Amundson. “So anytime the belts failed and we hadunexpected downtime, it took awayfrom what we were doing down-stream. This issue had a tremen-dous impact on our ability to getour product out the door.”
Potters Industries Inc., an affiliate of PQ
Corporation, is a leading producer of
engineered glass materials used for metal
finishing, a reinforcing additive for plastics
and conductive particles. However, the
majority of the company’s glass bead
production is used for highway safety,
providing the light-reflective lane markings
found on highways around the world.
In this article, we get an idea of how the
company’s production has been
renovated thanks to the installation of a
totally enclosed shaft-mounted speed
reducer from Baldor, which has, company
engineers say, delivered the reliability they
were looking for.

ENCLOSED SPEED REDUCERIMPROVES ELEVATORRELIABILITY
Both Amundson and Schult wereintrigued when they learned thatcompany engineers were specify-ing the Baldor-Dodge MotorizedTorque-Arm (MTA) for the project. While neither of them knew all theproduct details, Schult says theconcept of an enclosed gear reduc-er made sense for this application, and he was certain it would workbecause the Baldor-Dodge brand ofgearing is well known for quality.Amundson says that, based on whathe knew about direct drive pro-ducts, he was confident that thisgear reducer would provide the reli-ability he needed to keep the plantup and running.
“This product has met all myexpectations,” says Amundson.
“The MTAs have been runningsince January 2008 with absolutelyno issues. All we have done is regu-lar maintenance, but other than that,we have not had to do anything. They run trouble-free, which is anideal situation for us.”
It is clear the product has had amajor impact on increasing uptimeat the plant, but Amundson saysmaking the switch has also helpedsave time and money in otherways. For example, the plant didnot generally staff maintenancepersonnel on weekends or offhours. Instead, operators had totake time away from their regularduties to be trained to handle some of the maintenance issues, including changing belts. Now, all that has changed. “Today, wedon’t have to spend the time totrain operators to work on replac-
ing belts and sheaves,” explainsAmundson. “Our operators canfocus on their job, which is tomake quality products. In addition, our maintenance staff is no longertied up with constantly inspecting, tensioning or replacing belts.Instead, they can spend their time on other critical areas in the
plant, helping us become evenmore productive.”
After more than three years ofreliable performance, Amundsonsays he is grateful to the companyengineers who made the decision tostandardize on the MTA. He sayshe still does not know all the engi-neering details of why the reducer

industry, equipment and systemsfrom Vidromecanica find applica-tions everywhere – worldwide.Whether in glass containers, table-ware or technical glass, the deci-sion for glass engineering ‘madeby Vidromecanica’ is synony-mous with safety for function and investment.
DECORATING LEHRSDecorated glass articles with
enamels or decals go through a ther-mal process where the glass and theenamel are heated in decoratinglehrs. Normally, the range of tem-
peratures for enamel vitrification isbetween 500°C and 650°C, depend-ing upon paint type and features.
The decorating process insidethe decorating lehr is developed as follows:• glass heating, from room tem-
perature up to enamel vitrifica-tion temperature, the heatingspeed depending upon the typeof paint to use;
• vitrification level, the time need-ed to anneal/vitrify the paint ordecalcomania and to obtain thedesired brightness;
• decrease from vitrification tem-perature down to annealingtemperature;
• annealing level to warranty thehomogenization of the glass at

Specializing in machinery for precise production needs
is an important decision to make. Vidromecanica is one of the
companies that have made this choice and, in this article, speaks
about its most recent development for the container glass industry
with regards to decorating lehrs.

the annealing temperature,when necessary;
• glass annealing, slow coolingfrom annealing point temperaturedown to strain point temperature,the speed of which depends uponthe glass thickness;
• fast cooling down to room tem-perature, the speed of whichdepends upon the glass thickness. The evacuation of the solvents
present on the paint takes placethroughout the heating stage, whichrequire the installation of chimneysand fans for their forced extractionfrom inside the lehr tunnel. It isimportant that this heating be carriedout at a slow speed, so that the sol-vents are released in a natural way, avoiding the creation of bubbles on
the paint, which can result from avery fast temperature increase.
Using lead-free paints requiresoxygenation of the internal atmos-phere of the lehr, adding cleaned air,and thus obtaining better quality.
Decorating lehrs are made ofmodules, normally 2.0 or 2.25metres in length, having internalparts with air circulation ducts, exterior parts and insulationbetween them. They are alsoequipped with air circulation fans, heating elements (burners or elec-trical resistances) and chimneys;each element is placed at the rightplace and in the correct number soas to fulfil individual needs.
Heating can be carried out by means of proportional gas
burners (atmospheric or withforced air) or electrical with bat-teries of resistances.
In the case of heating with burn-ers, the flame can be developeddirectly on radiant pipes placed onthe upper surfaces, and, in thisway, the combustion gases enterthe tunnel directly. Another solu-tion is by radiant pipes with isolat-ed flame, normally placed at thebottom of the modules.
In this way, the gases resultingfrom combustion do not enter thetunnel of the lehr. In terms of energysavings, the system with directflame heating is more efficient.
Thanks to continuous evolution, decorating lehrs can now be con-trolled by touchscreen consoles and

programmable PLCs, providingmore precise control and operatingsupervision. As per client request, the lehr can be connected to thecompany’s ethernet network forremote access.
NEW DOUBLE STACKER FOR DECORATING LEHRS
Vidromecanica has developed anew double stacker for decoratinglehr entry, which has been specifi-cally designed to handle decoratedglass articles and to work with twoconveyors from two automaticprinting machines.
The stacker transfers the glassarticles automatically, beforebeing screen printed, by means ofa high-speed conveyor runningfrom the printing machine to thedecorating lehr mesh belt withoutany human intervention.
Vidromecanica equipment withtwo bars can operate together or sep-arately with one or two printingmachines at the same time.Movement of the bars by servomo-tors and servo-drives enables to con-trol several speeds during the cycle:• fully programmable speeds for
advancing motion;
• one speed for return motion;• the starting and ending points are
chosen from the HMI console;• start and stop of the bars in slow
motion.All functional parameters are
controlled by a touchscreen con-sole installed on the main electri-cal panel.
For the handling of unstablebottles, this equipment also has ananti-fall system, which preventsthe articles from having stabilityproblems.
THE VIDROMECANICASTRATEGY OF FOCUSINGON BENEFITS FOR CLIENTS

GLASS TABLEWARE
Pasabahce:
isecam Holding started itsactivities in 1935 with thefirst glass facility estab-lished in the Pasabahce dis-
trict of Istanbul, which was the firststep towards setting up and devel-oping the glass industry in Turkey.Ever since then, investments andproduction updates have been car-ried out using state-of-the-art tech-nology, as well as research anddevelopment activities, to cover allthe essential requirements for glassproducts in the country.
Already in the 1960s, Sisecamhad started to expand its operationstowards global markets, growingcontinuously and ranking amongthe most prestigious glassmakers ofEurope and the world.
SPECIALIZED IN ESSENTIALAREAS OF GLASSMAKING
Sisecam is specialized in all theessential areas of glassmaking withits main divisions, namely GlassTableware, Glass Packaging, FlatGlass and Chemicals.
Pasabahce continues to invest inhigh-growth markets by continu-ously launching and marketingnew brands.
Glass TablewareThe Glass Tableware Division
operates under the brand namePasabahce, manufacturing soda ashand crystal glass both hand madeand automatic.
Pasabahce Glass Industry andTrade Inc. started production ofglass tableware products made ofsoda ash using manual production(hand-made) in 1935, followed by,in 1955, machine production (auto-matic), which is regarded as the ini-tial phase in today’s automatic pro-duction technology. In 1974, theproduction of heat resistant glasswas included.
Pasabahce made its first exportsin 1961, and between 1980 and 2000it rapidly expanded its operations. The company opened new plants, incorporating the automatic produc-tion of soda, crystal and heat resis-tant glass products. During this pe-riod, Pasabahce also gave impetus totechnological advancement geared
towards quality and effi-ciency. With regards to
automatically pro-duced soda, crys-tal and heat resis-tant glass, produc-tion is underway inKırklareli, Mersinand Eskisehir; whilethe Denizli plant pro-duces only hand-
made products of both crystal andsoda-ash glass.
PosudaBy pursuing a sales and market-
ing organization outside Turkey, andforming logistics hubs in Europe,Pasabahce also initiated investmentsfor production abroad in order tostrengthen its position on a globalscale. In this context, a glasstableware plant in Posuda, the Russian Federationwas bought in 2003,which has full capacityof a new product range withPasabahce quality.
