RCA. Sansui Electric Co. and Comm As- sociates Inc. of Hicksville. N.Y., have pro- posed AM stereo broadcast systems to a n e w l y o r g a n i z e d N a t i o n a l AM Stereophonic Radio Committee. which will analyze and begin testing the systems for a report eventually to be submitted to the FCC. The comminee expects other manufacturers or inventors to come for: ward.

The committee, formed as a joint ven- ture of the National Association of Broad- casters, the Electronic Industries Associ- ation. the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers and the National Radio Broadcasters Association, hopes to assess all AM stereo projects before writ- ing its repon on the feasibility of stereo AM broadcasting. The report is not ex- pected for at least a year, but it muld initi- ate an FCC rulemaking.

The original RCA system had been field tested at WRCA~AM) New York (now Wm. The updated system is still in the blueprint stages and Iro prototype has been constructed. The system is based on fre- quency modulation of the carrier to allow complete compatibility with present AM receivers.

The Sansui system is a double-sideband operation using various phase shifts on the sidebands and input audio. In normal AM broadcasting, the lower and upper sidebands are in phase with each other and are created as a bybroduct of the carrier. Sansui creates the sidebands indepen- dently and therefore can control the infor- mation that each carries making a stereo signal. When the two channels are mixed there is no center buildup. AM lislener; with monaural sets will receive all levels in balance. Parts of the system have been built and tested, =cording to a spokes- man. but, like RCA, Sansui has completed no prototype.

Chicago Heights had two s t a t Ions, I th ink , around 1925, WCBZ & WJBZ. These may a c t u a l l y have been one & t h e same. These two were a l s o very low-powered, about 50w o r so, & I would guess t h e frequency t o be arorlnd 1280. Then t h e r e was :iNBA i n Forest Park, a western suburb, & WKBI on 1310 which had s tud ios In t h e Lincoln Trust & Savings Bank Bldg. on t h e NW s ide . WBBM s t a r t e d I n 1923 on 1330 a s . a low-powered s t a t i o n on Chicago's Far North Side,, & then came WIBO in 1925, which began Its ca ree r sha r ing t lme W/WBB# on t h e same frequen- cy. U ' was another l o c a l owned b y . a chap named Francis g. gridgeman. This was on t h e S s i d e in t h e Kenwood d i s t r i c t on Woodlawn Avenue, & ex- p i r e d about 1928. WOK took t o t h e a i r In 1925. I t s XR & p lan t were out a t Homewood, a f a r S suburb. lhey r a n around 1 , 0 0 0 ~ I th ink , & got a- round t h e country p r e t t y well . By 1926, J o l i e t Ill. had t h r e e s t a t i o n s , WCLS & WKBB, each on 1400, & :JBA on 1450. WJBA & WCLS were very shor t - l i v e d , but ' m B s tayed on f o r some t lme I n J o l i e t , t hen moved t o East Dubuque, & f i n a l l y t o Dubuque, Iowa, across t h e r i v e r , & became WDBQ. b o t h e r a r e a s t a t l o n t h a t might be mentioned I s WEHS In Ebanston. Orlg- l n a l l y owned b Evanston Township 81,~h School, it was l a t e r taken over by t h e Vic tor C. Carlson organiza t ion , an investment company. By 1930 It was long gone and mostly fo rgo t t en . By 1926, 1210 was duly occupied by KEDC, t h e o l d gull gememark C a d i l l a c & LaSalle Co, 6n Ogden Avenue, WSBC, ownde by t h e _World Storage Ba t t e ry go., & WCR'd, owned by C l in ton R_. _White. WCRW was on t h e N s i d e , WSBC S, & WEDC S . I n conclusion, I should mention a surmewha; c o l o r f u l s t a t l o n , WJAZ. y h l r was Chicago's f i r s t s t a t i o n t o " p i r a t e a frequency. In 1926 t h i s became a r a t h e r com- mon p r a c t i c e t h e country over, & WJAZ was i n on " the ground f loo r" , so t o speak. It was owned by t h e Zenith Radio Corp. no l e s s , wh:, should have known b e t t e r than t o p l r a t e a wave l eng th (frequency). However t h a t i s #hat they d id , wi th a l o t of confusion r e su l t i ng . Severa l Chicago s t a - t i o n s followed t h i s p r q c t i c e , & t h e l a r g e r more s t a lwar t s t a t ions pro- testedm but t o no ava i l . YSBC was another s t a t lon tn which jumped t h e i r assigned spot on t h e d i a l , 1210 a t t h e t lme, and moved c lose enough t o WGM t o spread over and cause in t e r f e rence . This p rac t ic@ wasn' t stopped m t l l t h e Radio Act of l9aT was f i n a l l y passed. This law provided f o r t h e o l d FRC, which assigned proper f requencies t o a l l s t a t i o n s , l a r g e & small , and was a forerunner of our FCC a s we have it today. XtAZ used t o broadcast from t h e Chez F i e r r e , a notor ious n ight club and speakeasy" o f t h a t now long-assed e r a . WJAZ f i n a l l y wound up on an assigned f r e - quency of 1480 & f o r a shor t time shared t lme wi th a :(CHI, of whose be- ginnings and u l t ima te f a t e I have l o s t t r a c k .
