The laser is housed in a sealed Detectorchamber and contains no serviceable parts. This laser emits invisible light and can be hazardous if viewedwith the naked eye. Under no circumstances should this chamber be opened.There is a safety labelonthe chamber as shown below.

    1. Overview

    The LaserCOMPACT is an aspirating smoke detector that provides all the benefits of aspiratingsmoke detection, including very early warning, for small areas. The LaserCOMPACT has beendesigned to protect areas up to 500sq.m (5,000sq.ft).

    The detector operates by drawing air from a protected area via a pipe network. A sample ofthe air is filtered to remove dust and dirt before it is passed through the laser detectionchamber. Smoke present in the detection chamber creates light scattering, which viasophisticated electronics produces a signal representing the absolute level of smoke present.

    The LaserCOMPACT can be programmed to have 2 or 3 alarm thresholds, which can be setacross its wide sensitivity range to provide both very early warning of a potential fire situationand allow the initiation of further control procedures should the smoke level increase.

    All pipe network designs for the LaserCOMPACT should be supported by the ASPIRE PipeModelling program results.

    VESDA products are only distributed through trained and accredited channels.

    It is understood that personnel installing this equipment are familiar with the VESDA technologyand have a good understanding of local codes and standards regarding electrical cabling.Installation engineers should be certified where appropriate.

    2.3 Operation

    2.3.1 LED and Reset/Isolate Push Button Switch Functions

    Refer to Figure 5 for the location of the LED indicators. The functions of the LED indicators onthe front panel from top to bottom and the push button Reset/Isolate switch are:-

    Fire This RED LEDlights up when the Fire alarm threshold is initiated.

    Pre-Alarm This RED LEDlights up when the Pre-Alarm threshold is initiated.

    This LED flashes when the Alert alarm threshold is initiated and*Alert Overlay in ON.

    *The option to have an Alert warning is set in the programming asAlert Overlay. When this condition is ON the LED will flash and thefault relay changes states in an Alert condition.

    Fault This YELLOW LED lights when a fault condition occurs.It is also lit during airflow normalisation.

    OK This Green LEDstays lit during normal operation; showing the unit ishealthy.

    This LED flashes twice repeatedly during air flow normalisationand/or three times repeatedly during AutoLearn.

    Reset/Isolate This Yellow LEDis lit when the unit is Isolated. During this condition

    the Pre-Alarm and/or Fire relay is de-energised (unlatched) if therelays have previously been energised (latched).

    (The default setting for the Fault relay is the energised (latched) stateunless altered during programming).

    Reset/IsolatePush ButtonSwitch

    To Reset the unit, press this switch once.To Isolate the unit, press and hold the switch for 2 seconds.To De-isolate the unit, press and hold the switch again for 2 seconds.While the detector is Isolated, any faults may be cleared by pressingthis switch once.

    If a remote Reset switch has been fitted to the Reset terminals and isset to the Isolate position

    ORIf the Reset/Isolate button has been locked out in the programming,this switchwill not operate. Refer to Section 2.8 and 4.7.

    2.4 Factory Default Settings

    The LaserCOMPACT is shipped from the factory with the default settings as per the table inSection 6.0. Only authorised personnel at the Administrative (ADM) or Distributor (DST) levelmay alter these values.

    2.4.1 Factory Default User Access Levels

    The factory set default access levels are 1 User (USR), 1 Administrator (ADM) and 1 Distributor(DST). Each level requires a four-digit PIN number to be entered before gaining access to thedetector. The user may add, alter, delete or modify user names and PINs after having gainedaccess into the system. Up to 10 Users and 4 Administrators may be added.

    2.4.2 Factory Default PIN Numbers

    The factory default Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) are distributed to authorisedpersonnel attending accredited VESDA training courses and may be altered after gainingaccess into the system.

    2.5 LaserCOMPACT Detector Models

    The LaserCOMPACT comes in two models and are as follows:-

    2.5.1 Relays Only (RO) Model (Part No. VLC 500)

    This model is used as a single stand-alone smoke detector and is not connected intoVESDAnet. The model is identified by the part number (VLC-500) which is located on a label

    at the bottom of the enclosure (See Figure 2)

    Programming this detector is by connecting a PC with a RS232 communication cable to the 9pin programming socket on the termination card located inside the detector. Run the VConfigPro or VConfig Basic program from the PC to program.

    2.5.2 VESDAnet (VN) Model (Part No. VLC 505)

    This model is used when the detector is to be connected into VESDAnet. The model isidentified by the part number (VLC-505) which is located on a label at the bottom of theenclosure (See Figure 2)

    Communication to this detector is performed by one of the following methods:-

    Connect a LCD Programmer to the 15 pin programming socket on the termination card

    OR

    Connect a PC to the 15 pin programming socket via a PC-Link HLI device and running theVConfig Pro of VConfig Basic program from the PC

    OR To a VESDAnetsocketfrom a remote Programmer or PC.

    This detector can be used as a stand-alone device and not connected into VESDAnet. In thisconfiguration, the VESDAnet terminals must be linked. Refer to Section 4.4.

    2.6 Detector Mounting

    The LaserCOMPACT comes with a separate metal mounting bracket that is attached onto the

    mounting location. The detector can only be mounted with the supplied mounting bracket. Theback of the detector is slotted over the four tabs on the mounting bracket and is locked in placewith an anti-tamper screw located inside the enclosure. Refer to Figure 3 for mounting andFigure 6 for the anti tamper screw location.

    2.7 Relay Outputs

    There are three relays (Fire, Pre-Alarmand Fault) for interfacing to external devices or to theFire Alarm Panel. The relays are programmable to the energised (latched) or de-energised(non-latched) states via a PC or LCD Programmer. Refer to the table below for the conditionsfor these relays to change states.

    Note:The Fault relay is set to the energised (latched) state on power up and is de-energised(unlatched) when a fault or Alert condition is present. Connection is made between theNO and C terminals when the relay is energised.

    RELAY CONDITIONS FOR RELAYS TO CHANGE STATES

    Fire Fire alarm smoke threshold level is initiated. (Relay is energised)

    Pre-Alarm Pre-Alarm smoke threshold level is initiated. (Relay is energised)

    Fault Fault found on detector or on VESDAnet loop.Air flow Normalisation is initiated.System Isolation is initiated.(Relay is de-energised for all three conditions above)

    When the Overlay Alertfunction has been selected and when theAlertsmoke threshold level has been initiated or when a fault ispresent. (Relay is de-energised)

    Note: The above relay states are not applicable when the relay states are reprogrammed bythe user.

    2.8 Auxiliary Terminals

    The auxiliary terminals on the termination card are Bias, Resetand LED. Refer to Section 4.7

    for wire connection details. These terminals have the following functions:-

    Bias terminals These output terminals provide 10VDC supply to power the Reset inputterminals via a remote ON/OFF switch.

    LED terminals These output terminals provide a 5V, 15mA DC supply via a 220 ohm resistorto drive an LED located in another part of the building.

    Reset terminals These terminals are also known as the General Purpose Input (GPI) and is(GPI Input) used for one of these three functions; Reset, Mains OK or Standby. The

    Reset terminals can be programmed to one of the functions if required andrequires 5V to 33VDC to operate. Any input into this terminal overrides theReset switch on the front panel. These functions operate as follows:-

    Reset/Isolate

    The detector Isolates when 5 VDC is applied to this terminal andReset when the voltage drops 2 VDC.

    MainsOK

    The detector monitors the state of the external power supply andresponds to the following conditions.

    Mains OK 5 VDC is at this terminal

    Mains Fail 2 VDC is at this terminal

    Standby The detector Isolates and the aspirator turns OFF when 5 VDC is atthis terminal.

    Note:The input states are not defined for any voltages > 2 to < 5 VDC.

    2.9 Cable Entry Ports

    There are four 25 mm (1in) cable entry ports on the top right hand side of the detector. Anyof the ports can be used to run the cables into the detector. Refer to Figure 4, 6 and Section 3.4for more details.

    2.10 Event Log

    The detector stores and logs up to a maximum of 12,000 events on a first in first out basis. By

    regulation, detectors are normally required to be powered from a battery backed DC powersupply. This ensures that the log is held indefinitely. If it is required to totally remove the DCpower source and it is considered the log may hold useful then the user should download thelog into a PC using VConfig Pro software program before disconnecting the DC power.

    3. Assembly Description

    3.1 Assembly DescriptionThe components of the LaserCOMPACT are housed inside a grey plastic enclosure with adecal fascia on the front cover and a metal back panel. The front cover is removable and issecured to the enclosure with two screws located on the left and right hand side of the cover.The plastic tie attaches the cover to the enclosure, is removable and is used to prevent strainon the cable loom. The detector contains two parts:-

    a) The Front Cover

    The front cover (Refer to Figure 5 and Section 3.2) houses the following components:-

    5 LEDs to indicate Fire, Pre-Alarm, Fault, OK and Reset/Isolate states

    Reset/Isolate Push Button Switch

    b) The Main Enclosure

    The main enclosure (Refer to Figure 4 and 6) houses the following components:-

    Termination Card (Refer to Section 3.3)

    3.2 Front Cover and LEDs

    The front cover has a self adhesive printed decal attached next to the LED display. On the rearof the cover is a card with LEDs and a Reset switch. This card connects to the termination card

    with a wire loom labelled LED CARD. The front cover hangs down from the enclosure by aplastic tie when the cover is in the open position and ensures the cable loom is not stressed.

    3.3 Termination Card

    This card is attached to the detector enclosure with four screws. This is an interface card thatallows power, VESDAnet, relay and auxiliary wires to be connected to the detector. There aretwo wire terminal strips on the card to terminate the wires. The maximum wire size that can fitinto the terminal is 2.5sq mm (12AWG).

    The power protection fuse (1.5A) is removable and protects the detector electrical systemagainst short circuit or overload. The DC power converters on this card steps down the

    incoming DC power to lower voltages.

    There are three programmable relays with contacts rated at 2A @ 30VDC and forms aninterface to the fire alarm control panel or to other devices. The default relay settings are thede-energised (unlatched) states except the Fault relay, which is energised (latched), on powerup. These relays may be programmed to any states.

    The 9 pin or 15 pin, programming socket on the card allows interface with a PC or a LCDProgrammer. Refer to Sections 4.6 to determine which programming device is to be used foreach model type.

    3.4 Cable Entry Ports

    There are four cable entry ports, two on the right hand side, one on the top right hand side andone on the rear of the enclosure. The size of the cable entry port is 25 mm (1in) and haspush out hole plugs covering these ports. Any of these cable entry ports may be used to run thecables into the enclosure. To remove the hole plugs use your thumb to push out the plugs frominside the enclosure.

    3.5 Air Inlet Port

    There is one air inlet port located on the top of the enclosure that allows the sampled air toenter into the detector for analysis. An arrow pointing towards the port identifies the air inletand has a plug that must be removed during installation. The size of the air inlet port is 25mm(1in) and is able to fit a pipe up to this size. The air inlet port tapers towards the inside and

    allows the pipe to be inserted as far as it will go. This pipe connection must NOT be glued.

    3.6 Air Filter Cartridge

    The air filter cartridge is located at the bottom left hand side of the enclosure and is held inplace by a single recessed screw. The filter elements are housed inside a disposable cartridgeand cannot be cleaned for reuse. To remove the air filter cartridge, undo the screw and lift outthe air filter cartridge.

    The sampled air from the environment passes through two stages of air filters within the airfilter cartridge. The first stage removes the large particles of dirt and allows the smaller smokeparticles to pass into the detection chamber for analysis. The second stage removes thesmaller particles of dirt and passes very clean air into the detection chamber to keep the optical

    surfaces clean.

    The expected filter operating life is 5 years in a normal office environment. In dustyenvironments, the life expectancy of the filter is reduced. The detector monitors the air filter lifeand efficiency and the user is prompted when it is time to change the filter.

    3.7 Aspirator

    The aspirator is a proprietary high efficiency suction air pump that draws in air through anetwork of sampling air pipes and passes a small sample of the filtered air into the laser

    detection chamber. The rest of the air is forced out through the exhaust pipe located at thebottom of the enclosure. The aspirator runs continuously at a constantly regulated speed. Theairflow through the aspirator is monitored continuously by the airflow sensor located inside theair inlet port and the user is prompted when there is a reduction or an increase in the airflow.

    3.8 Air Exhaust Port

    This port allows the sampled air to be expelled into the environment. There is one air exhaustport and is located at the bottom right hand side of the enclosure. The size of the air exhaust

    port is 25mm (1in) and is able to fit a pipe up to this size. A plug covers the air exhaust portand must be removed during installation. The air from this port can be piped back to the firezone via pipes connected to this outlet if required. Any pipe connection made to the exhaust

    port must NOT be glued.

    3.9 Laser Detection Chamber

    The Laser detection chamber is located in the rear of the enclosure behind the metal backpanel.

    Note: This component is inaccessible, not serviceable and is not to be opened byanypersonnel.The metal back panel is not to be opened by any personnel.

    In this chamber, a small portion of the smoky air passes through a laser beam causing lightscattering. The scattered light is analysed by the central processor card to determine the smokedensity or obscuration.

    3.10 Processor Card

    The central processor card is located in the rear of the enclosure behind the metal back panel.

    Note: This component is inaccessible, not serviceable and is not to be opened byany personnel.The metal back panel is not to be opened by any personnel.

    4.3 Power Terminals

    There are four power terminals designated Power (+)and Power (-) on Terminal B for 24VDCpower connection. The Power (+) terminal is for positive 24VDC supply and the Power (-)terminal is for DC Ground. The four power terminals enable power to be brought into thedetector via a single wire pair and looped out to another device via another wire pair. Thedetector has reverse polarity protection to minimise the risk of a reverse power connection tothe detector.

    Note: The LaserCOMPACT will not operate when the supply is reversed.Do not operate when the DC supply voltage is outside the device operatingvoltage range of 18VDC to 30VDC. Damage may occur if more than 30VDC isapplied.

    4.4 VESDAnet Terminals (VN Model only)

    These terminals are located on the termination card in the VN model only. There are sixVESDAnet terminals on Terminal Bdesignated VESDAnet A (+), VESDAnetA (-), VESDAnetB (+),VESDAnetB (-)and Shield (Qty 2).The terminals enable the VESDAnetwires to bebrought into the detector and looped out to another device.

    Data communication between detectors is bidirectional and the Aor Bchannel set of terminalsmay be used to terminate the incoming or outgoing wires. Refer to Figure 10 for cabling details.The polarity of the data wires must be maintained throughout the network and all Shieldwiresmust be terminated at all wire ends.

    When the detector is to be used as a stand-alone device and is not connected into VESDAnetthe VESDAnet A and B channels must be looped as shown in Figure 11.

    VESDAnet was designed to function at its optimum in a Closed Loopnetwork (Refer to Figure10 for closed loop wiring) and this configuration is highly recommended to achieve a faulttolerant loop. The detectors must be programmed to the Closed Loopconfiguration (systemdefault setting).

    An Opened Loop configuration is possible by not linking the VESDAnet terminals betweendetectors 1 and 5 (Refer to Figure 10). Detector 1 and detector 5 must be programmed to theOpened Loop configuration otherwise the system will generate a fault.

    4.5 Relay Terminals

    There are three alarm relays designated Fault, Pre-Alarm and Fire. Refer to Figure 12. Therelays can be used to connect power or data to the fire alarm control panel or to activateexternal devices. The relay terminals are located at the following terminals on the terminationcard:-

    RO model --- Terminal strip A, pins 1 to 7VN model --- Terminal strip A, pins 7 to 13

    There are three terminals for the Fault relay (Fault NO, Fault NC, Fault C)and two terminalseach for the Pre-Alarm (Pre-Alarm NO, Pre-Alarm C)and Fire (Fire NO, Fire C)relays.

    The default relay states are non-energised (non-latched) except the Fault relay, which is set to

    the energised (latched) state on power up. The relays can be programmed to any state.

    4.6 Programming Socket

    The 9 pin or 15 pin programming socket on the termination card provides the communicationinterface between the detector and a PC or LCD Programmer. Use the information listed belowto determine the type of programming device required to program the VN or the RO detector.

    ROmodel The programming socket on the termination card has 9 pins.Use a PC and connect the RS232 data cable directly to the 9 pin VESDAlinkprogramming socket.

    VNmodel The programming socket on the termination card has 15 pins.Use a LCD Programmer and connect the programmer cable to the 15 pin

    VESDAnet programming socket.ORUse a PC with a VESDA PC-Link HLI device and the appropriate data cablesto connect to the 15 pin VESDAnet programming socket.

    4.7 Auxiliary Terminals

    There are three pairs of auxiliary terminals on both models designated as:-

    4.7.1 Bias TerminalsThe Bias (+) output terminal provides a 10V supply via a 1K resistor to power the Resetterminals via a Reset/Isolate switch located in another part of the building. The Bias ()terminal is the Bias ground. Refer to Figure 13 for a suggested circuit.

    4.7.2 Reset Terminals (General Purpose Input)

    This input terminal pair could be used for one of the three functions listed below.

    This input terminal requires a voltage supply between 5V to 33V DC to operate. Connect theRESET (+)to the positive output and theRESET (-) to the ground output of the external deviceor use the Bias outputs and wire up as per Figure 13. The detector must be programmed toone of the above function which is located under the Miscellaneousmenu in the programmingdevice. The voltage input to this terminal is isolated from the system by an opto-couplerdevice.

    4.7.3 Remote LED Terminals

    This output terminal pair provides a 5V, 15mA DC supply via a 220ohm resistor to power up aremote LED indicator. Connect the LED (+) to the positive terminal and the LED (-) to thenegative terminal of the remote LED indicator as per Figure 13.

    9.3 Replacing the Air Filter Cartridge

    Disassembly

    1. Locate the air filter cartridge (A) inside thedetector compartment.

    2. Undo the recessed Philips head filterscrew (B).

    3. Lift out the air filter cartridge.

    1. Insert a new air filter cartridge (A).2. Tighten filter screw (B).3. Reset the filter counter by connecting a LCD

    programmer or a PC with VConfig Pro or VConfigBasic software to the programming socket.

    9.4 Replacing the Aspirator

    Disassembly

    1. Remove the four screws (A) securing thetermination card.

    2. Disconnect the aspirator cable loom fromthe connector on the aspirator.

    3. Gently pull out termination card (B) frominterface card (connected behind).

    4. Be careful not to dislodge any wiresconnected to the termination card.

    5. Leave the termination card suspended byits wires.

    6. Pull off the air hose from aspirator pipe (D).7. Undo three Philips head screws securing aspirator (E). Screws are captive and do not

    come off the aspirator.8. Turn aspirator anti-clockwise (F) using the exhaust port as the pivot point.

    9. Push aspirator upward (G) and remove.

    Assembly

    1. Check the new aspirator has a gasket on the inlet flange and three attached screws.2. Wipe manifold outlet flange surface (J) if dirty. See Figure 16.3. Do the reverse of disassembly.4. Secure aspirator with three screws (E).5. Connect removed air hoseto pipe on aspirator. Ensure a tight fit over the pipe.6. Insert Termination Card (B) into interface card (C).7. Secure the termination card with four screws (A).8. Connect aspirator cable connector to socket on aspirator. Connector is polarised and can

    only be inserted one way.

    9. Check all wires are secured to its connectors or terminals.10. Power ON the detector and check the aspirator is running.11. Close up the detector.
