About the Event This training event for church librarians is planned and hosted by Virginia Church Library Association, a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to the support and advancement of Christian ministry through the local church library. The organization started in 1958 and continues to provide training and networking of church library workers twice a year at spring and fall conferences. Please share this with anyone interested in church library ministry. Individual membership, conference fees and occasional special projects provide funding for the organization’s work. Consequently, it is essential that interested persons become members and attend conferences so these services can continue and keep this ministry alive. Please visit our website www.vacla.org for additional information regarding the organization, this conference and helpful links to other related sites and organizations.

VCLA Scholarships

VCLA is pleased to announce that we are going to be offering again for the spring conference scholarships for first-time conference attendees. The scholarships are intended to bring church library

workers to our conferences for training and networking. This will also introduce them to everything VCLA has to offer. Financial assistance is available to help offset some of the conference cost. Below is the

scholarship application that must be completed and returned no later than April 15, 2020.

Class Information

If you plan on taking any of the Atriuum or Excel for Libraries classes, please bring a laptop if possible.

Atriuum’s Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) Allison Maynard

This session will cover OPAC. OPAC is what your patrons use to access your database. We will cover how to customize OPAC for your library, as well as answer questions.

Bible Journaling Carol Buckles

Bible Journaling is a new approach to Bible study that involves art in devotion. This informal workshop will introduce several approaches. The church library can be the focus of introducing a Bible Journaling small group, by providing a space to work, materials, ideas and “permission” to do art in a Bible. A handout of online resources is provided, and can be picked up whether you attend the workshop or not.

Book Repair Jewel Barger

Learn how to make old books new again, showing you how to make repairs to damaged items.

Classification Declassified Martha Hancock

This is a multi-level, interactive class on the usages, both basic and advanced of the Dewey Decimal System of classification. Arm yourself with the how’s and why’s of using this logical system of putting the books in your library in order. Attendees are encouraged to bring the book, A Classification System for Church Libraries (available on-line on LifeWay.com for $8.99) and the Sears Subject Headings, 19th Edition or higher. Questions are welcome.

Cleaning Up Your Atriuum Database Allison Maynard

In this session we will create/modify reports to help with analyzing and weeding your collection, look at consolidating records, and using Quick Cataloging to add missing information to item records, as well as answer questions.

Cleaning Up Your Concourse Database Allison Maynard

In this session we will create/modify reports to help with analyzing and weeding your collection, use eZcat to add missing information to item records, and answer questions.

Concourse vs. Atriuum Allison Maynard

If you are considering upgrading from Concourse to Atriuum, or you are just gathering information about the two programs, come see what the differences are between Book Systems’ Concourse (windows-based) program and Atriuum (web-based) program. Learn about differences in navigating the programs, cataloging items, reports, OPAC, and more.

Every Child Ready to Read Cathy Montgomery

Success in the classroom can begin even before a child enters kindergarten. Learn about early literacy and how church libraries can be a part of the action in helping families to read more books.

Excel for Libraries Carol Buckles

Microsoft Excel can be a useful tool for small church libraries, if you can’t afford an electronic library system. This class is an introduction to the features of Excel that make it useful for cataloging, shelf list and card catalog functions in a small library. A sample spreadsheet will be provided in Dropbox [online].

Class Information continued

Freeware for the Display, Capture, Conversion and Archiving of Digital Media Ron Buckles

This class will be a presentation of free, well-known and proven safe software tools that aid in the capturing, editing and archiving of video, image and audio files. Also included is an introduction in how and why information is converted to digital.

Library Promotion Liz Baker

Explore ways to increase awareness and usage of your church library through communication. Promote your library's resources by using old and new marketing techniques.

Library Space & Furnishings Jason Green

Have questions about furniture and shelving for your church library? Jason Green, president of Melos Inc., will be on hand to discuss your library needs from planning, design, layout, procurement and installation regardless of the size of the project.

Make it Great Julie Grimes

We all know that libraries are repositories of knowledge and ideas, but they can also be a place where people can work together and create new things. Discover ways to increase your library offerings while expanding your patron base. From sewing and craft making to science experiments, library makerspace options allow patrons hand-on experiences and ways to turn their ideas into reality.

Mission Control Carol Buckles

Mission Control is a business approach to running a church library, for folks who don’t necessarily have business training. The tools of business are not just about turning a profit, but serving the customer. First, you have to identify your customer! For lots of ideas about meeting the needs of your church body, learn about controlling the mission.

ResourceMate Dottie Lewis

Roundtable discussion about using ResourceMate while using the software Volunteer App as a live demonstration.

Transform with Displays Kim Britton-Oliver

There is a $5 fee per person to cover the supplies used in the class.

Upcycle your old weeded library books...take one book or five & create! Transforming books into a tabletop, shelf or window display, a birdhouse, bookends, a frame, pendants, a wall board or create a whimsical display. Please bring weeded hardback books about crafts, cooking, children’s & reference books to use & share (the more the better). Also a prop or two that you are going to incorporate into your creation. Prop examples (items from home & the Dollar Tree is a great resource): a teacup & saucer, spoon, eye glasses, candle stick holder & candle, a heart, a bird or a rabbit figurine, etc., artificial flowers/succulents. Your creative possibilities are endless!
