he people, “Born of the Water,” long ago, have created their own water-based paradise –in a more modern sense – which continues toreplenish their community in bountiful ways.Treasure Island Resort & Casino, locatedon the banks of the Mississippi River, isowned and operated by the Prairie Island

Indian Community of Minnesota, whose tribal name,“Mdewakanton”means“Born of the Water.”

A Video King customersince 2013, the multi-million dollar resort hasexpanded to includeeverything from a casino, with highly acclaimedrestaurants and entertain-ment, 3,000-seat eventcenter, hotel, water park, golf course, RV park,100-passenger cruiseliner, marina, full-servicedspa, bowling and arcade, since its Bingo beginnings.

The people – severalhundred strong – calltheir gaming enterprise“the new buffalo,”because it has helpedthem restore their self-sufficiency.

“It is responsible for improving life on the reservation, strengthening their tribal government, and preserving ourculture,” they said.

But it goes beyond their borders. Since 1994, TreasureIsland Resort & Casino and the Prairie Island Indian Commu-nity together have contributedmore than $17.5 million tothousands of nonprofit and civic organizations throughout theregion. They also have partnerships with the following profes-sional sports teams: Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild,Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, St. Paul Saints.

or many facilities, the one big hole in the gamingoptions they offer their players has been theavailability of a true ClassII Video Poker game.By this I mean a Class IIVideo Poker game that

has the look, pay table and play action of aClass III, Las Vegas Video Poker game.

There have been many attemptsat creating a Non-Class III Video Pokergame, but they have fallen short in theirability to attract Video Poker players, primarily because of their play actionand decision-making deficiencies.

Meaning, players cannot changetheir Video Poker cards to get a better hand– as evidenced by the players’ inability to throw awaya winning hand.

Case in point, Washington State. The compacted gamesthe tribes play there include a version of a Video Poker game.It has the look and pay table of a Video Poker game – but not theplay action or decision-making of a Las Vegas Video Poker game.

You see, the Washington system is based on the concept of alottery scratch ticket game, where all wins and prizes are prede-termined. In the Washington Video Poker game, a sixth card isdealt, a Wild Card called a Genie Card, in addition to the

normal, five-card hand. This card is used by the game to automat-ically correct player mistakes.

Take for example aplayer, who has a winninghand in a “Jacks Or Better”game, say a pair of Queensthat would pay 2 credits, alongwith a single King and an 8and a 9. If the player attemptsto better his hand and the associated prizes, but makes amistake and discards one of the Queens, this results in theplayer throwing away a winning hand.

At that point the game would automatically reveal aWild Card, the Genie Card, which in this case will be a King, which results in a DIFFERENT winning hand (two Kings) thatrestores the SAME “Jacks Or Better” prize amount, the 2credits that the player would have won before he threw awaythe original winning hand (the two Queens) that he was dealt.

In essence, the player cannot lose the original winning prizeamount nor can he/she better his/her hand, nor better the prizeshe/she could have won, by changing playing cards.

True Video Poker players see this and understand thatthis is not the Las Vegas-style Video Poker game that theywant to play, and refuse to play this game.

This is just one example of an attempt to create a LasVegas-style Video Poker game that is not a Class III game.

largely untapped segment of our industry. SENIOR CENTERS! Did you know there are more than11,000 senior centers in the United States?

Statistics show that the average demographic of a seniorcenter visitor aligns with the exact, same demographic of aBingo player. How many senior cen-ters do you have in your market?

How many are activecustomers, who are buy-ing from you on a regular

basis, or have done soin the past six

months? If youcan’t think ofany, you need to

f you’ve been to Vegas, you’ve heard the callof “Match Play” on theslots. Or, if you’ve hadthe chance to visit one ofthe many halls in Florida

running Video King’s 24-numberQuickShot games, you may havegotten to enjoy spending some of theHouse’s money ...

Wouldn’t it be great if thesepopular player incentives were avail-able at your Bingo hall?

Video King is always looking for waysto improve player experience, while savingthe operator time and effort, and we’re excited to finally bringMatch Play & Free Play to the world of Bingo.

To get started, all you need is credit-based gaming on ourBingo tablets (like the new CHAMP-e) and the newest version ofthe rock-solid OMNI Hall Management system (which also hap-pens to be fully compliant with the incoming NIGC 2018 MICS.)

For players, it’s almost too good to be true – but it is! The House decides when and how much to offer – like a

straight 1-for-1 match, or special incentives to boost sales, such as “Buy 5 PowerPick-Em’s To Earn $5 Free Play.”The extra credits just “show up” in the player’s account!

For operators, the problem has always been – how do youoffer such an eye-popping incentive to the player, while ensuringthe House’s money actually gets wagered prior to cash out?

In OMNI, the operator simply sets a rule like, “for every $10of credits bought, give the player an extra $10 Free Play, whichmust be wagered before it can be cashed out.”

The OMNI POS takes care of the rest: The player spends$10 cash, but the system puts $20 credits in their account –and at cash-out time, the system ensures that the bonusJohn Mowat

il’ Champ,™ our caninemascot, and the folks atVideo King have a knackfor sniffing outthe latesttech-

With theCatalytic PUREAIRPurifier, Lil’ Champsmells somethinggood ... Fact, it’s something that wouldmake “good sense” for anyone, be itBingo hall, casino, restaurant, smokingroom, hotel, a variety of businesses orprivate residence.

These days, clean air is a premium.Note the smog alerts in major cities andhealth hazards related to toxins andsecond-hand smoke.According to the EPA,our indoor environment is two to five timesmore toxic than our outdoor environment.

The Catalytic PUREAIR unit – aportable air purifier – now offered throughVideo King is just the solution, regardlessthe size or type of your venue.

Need PUREAIR for your home orbusiness? Just use your sniffer, likeLil Champ, and take a whiff of air.

A human’s nose is very sensitive andcan detect up to 10,000 smells. A dog,at least 1,000 times even more so ...

Often smell like a human ashtrayonce you leave a certain bar or casino, has Fido left his mark in places heshouldn’t go, not too fond of the friedfish permeating the air, or just plaguedby seasonal allergies or other maladies, making it near impossible to breathe?

With the Catalytic PUREAIR purifier, minimizing these unwelcomed odors andallergens – most importantly – safely andeffectively – can be a breeze.Í

Unlike other models on the market, this patented air purification processuses PCO (photo catalytic oxidation)technology and HEPA filtration to reduce

unwanted smoke, offensive odors andairborne contaminants.

Proven highly effective, the systemaddresses all four sources of indoor airpollution: particles, aerosols, gases andodors. And, it doesn’t just collect the pol-lutants into a filter, but actuallly reduces

viruses, bacteria and other organiccompounds by destroying them, according to the manufacturer.

As you well know, customerhappiness is key to, well, thatsweet smell of success –

to say nothing of your own health. In fact, the biggest complaint amongcasino customers is cigarette smoke thatseems to linger everywhere. And, figuresstate, two-thirds of the adult populationdon’t even smoke.

But that’s something forward-think-ing homeowners and employers havealready banked on. Placed in thousandsof casinos, hotels, public places, busi-nesses and homes around the world, these compact units offer a welcomedgreen or eco-friendly alternativeto improving the quality of indoor air.

How does it work? Each CatalyticPUREAIR purifier will cover 325 to 500feet, depending upon occupancy andactivity in the area. And, by using renew-able, photo catalytic oxidation technology

t is very important thatwe put in every effort toprotect against failinghardware. There is nosingle solution to pro-tect from hardware fail-

ure, but here are a few tips to helpminimize these failures.

1. Safe ShutdownProcedures

■ Powering down correctly protectsthe file system and results in fasterboot times. Whenever you need topower down a computer, including the Powerserver, pointsof sale or desk PC, it is important that you do so properly. This is normally done by performing a Shut Down SystemProcedure. Alternatively, if you are not planning on shut-ting down the entire system, you can power down anindividual machine through the Windows Start Menu.■ If your hall experiences a power outage, there is a possi-bility that some of the computers in your hall will remain

on. This is because they are receiving back-up powerfrom an Uninterrupted Power Supply or UPS.

When a UPS starts supplying back-up power, therewill typically be an audible alarm. These devices are in

place to prevent damage from a sudden power failure, but they rely on a battery and will fail when the battery isexhausted. It is important that you properly shut down allof the equipment if the power does not return immediately. ■With or without a UPS, there can be times when your areais experiencing conditions that may make operating undesir-able. This doesn’t mean that you have to stop Bingo becauseof wind, rain or snow. However, if the power to your hallbecomes unpredictable, it may not be safe to continue. If you find yourself in this situation, it would be best tocontact the Help Desk to find out how to proceed.

2. Install A UPS■ As mentioned earlier, Uninterrupted Power Supplies cansupply emergency power in a power outage.

You might find that, without a UPS, losing powerfor just a few seconds, will be enough to cause aconsiderable delay. If you think that this has hap-pened at your hall, it may be beneficial to look at youroptions. Video King recommends using at least a 750 VAUPS for the Server and another 750 VA UPS if you planon installing one on the desk.■ If you have a UPS, periodically check the status lightsto make sure that the battery doesn’t need replacing.■ Remember that you should never plug a printer into aUPS. Printers draw a large amount of power from your UPS,which can overload it, and cause the computer to shutdown unexpectedly.

3. Cleanliness■ It is important that computers and electronics are keptclean for efficient operation. One way to make sure of thisis to keep the surfaces around the equipment clean. Mostelectronics tend to attract dust, and if you keep the areaaround them clean, this will help to cut down on this.■ Bingo consoles have a filter installed on the blowerchamber. This filter should be replaced every three months.A dirty filter can cause poor ball performance and canpotentially cause damage to the blower motor.

4. Maintenance■When you replace the blower motor filter, take time to oil theblower motor and check the static spring to ensure it is intact.■ For the most part, with the exception of regular cleaning, the rest our equipment is practically maintenance free.

5. Be Prepared■ There is nothing more aggravating, than finding out apiece of equipment has failed. If you have a computer thathas crashed, the Help Desk may ask if you have a RecoveryDisk and/or your version specific e-BOS Installation CDs.These disks need to be stored in a safe place. If you cannotlocate these, please contact the Help Desk to request a copy.■ Keeping spare equipment on hand is part of being pre-pared. Consider each piece of equipment, and whether it is es-sential to your Bingo session. If it is, consider keeping a spare.■ For technical assistance, call our 24/7 Help Desk at(888) 246-4609 or e-mail us at [email protected].

he Mdewakanton Dakota Indians, or “thosewho were born of the waters,” have lived onPrairie Island for countless generations. This graceful land, with the wooded shoresof the Mississippi and Vermillion Rivers,

embraces a broad and fruitful prairie – a spiritual placefor its people. Traditional cultural and spiritual cere-monies are filled with color and dance. The spirit is alive.■ The Prairie Island Indian Community Membersare descendants of the Mdewakanton Band of EasternDakota, also known as the Mississippi or MinnesotaSioux, who were parties to treaties with the UnitedStates from 1805 to 1863.■ Barn Bluff, near Red Wing, circa 1840s – was ofgreat importance to the tribe and served as both alandmark and a lookout point.■ Prior to white settlers moving to this area, ancestorsof the Prairie Island Indian Community were semi- nomadic people who lived along the Mississippi River. ■ In 1880, hope inspired some families to returnto Prairie Island – to buy back small parcels of theirancestral home. Then in 1936, the federal governmentofficially recognized Prairie Island Indian Communityas a reservation, awarding them 534 acres. The seeds of self-sufficiency were once again being

Born and raised in Toronto,Sherwood, now 56 and a residentof Austin, Texas, has 32 years ofgaming experience in both theslots and Bingo industry.

“I began in gaming in1985 with Bazaar & Noveltyand continued in the “family”with Bingo King and StuartEntertainment for 20 years,”he said of his association withthe Stuarts, considered a Bingodynasty for many decades.

At one time, the lateLen Stuart, founder, wasCanada’s leading Bingo equip-ment supplier and a vendor ofdisposable Bingo cards to BingoKing in the states.

After acquiring Bingo King,Stuart merged his U.S. opera-tions, becoming the states’ lead-ing Bingo equipment supplier.

In 1991, the company wasofficially renamed Stuart Enter-tainment, his brother, Tim, said.

In 2005, Sherwood joinedMultimedia Games, eventuallybecoming Vice President of Salesfor the Eastern United States andCanada. For the past two years,he has been Director of Sales andNew Market Development withBluberi Gaming Technologies.

Sherwood received hisBusiness AdministrationDiploma from Seneca Collegeof Applied Arts and Technologiesin Toronto, but says his measureof success is “having a home, family and friends.”

As far as the future of Bingo,Sherwood foresees the game willcontinue to evolve. And, by thesame token, the gaming industryin general.

“I see players looking for morecommunity-style games – questsfor millennial, video gaming typeproducts. Playing on tablets willbe the next major direction of theslot machine,” he said.

When he’s not immersedin gaming, Sherwood, a familyman, likes to spend time withhis wife, Barb, and two sons,Alec, 18, and Jack, 15, watchinghockey and any sport theirchildren are involved in.

The Bingo Venue■ How did you hear about Video King: We actually learnedabout Vide King through our paper and dauber distributor. Wethen took the time to do some research to see what was offeredand how this product was better and how it would fit into ourprogram at Treasure Island.■ How would you rate Video King’s products and service: We have been very happy with the products offered and the customer service that Video King provides. When you change to a new systemyou know that there will be some kind of issues during the transi-tion. Video King has been right there assisting in any way they can

and helping us tosolve any prob-lems as soonas possible.■ How popularis Bingo:Bingo is whereit all startedhere at TreasureIsland, and ithas remainedpopularwith our

guests since 1984. We have a great group of guests thatattend Bingo on a regular basis. We have been working on thedeveloping the younger audience, as well by doing promotionsto make Bingo fun and exciting to that audience.■ Given the choice of entertainment options, why do youthink people enjoy Bingo: I believe Bingo is a great socialentertainment experience. Our guests come here to enjoy theBingo games, as well as have a chance to meet other guestsand socialize with them. We have a lot of guests that havedeveloped friendships, and they get together here for fun. ■ How big is the Bingo venue: Island Bingo seats 480 guestswith the option to increase the seating to about 520 guests,by adding a few tables here and there throughout the hall.■ Has it increased in popularity: I think the popularity ofBingo dropped for a period of time, but with the introduction of“Bingo Gone Wild” and the Cosmic Bingo sessions, I believe it isgaining popularity with the younger crowd. Treasure Island bringsin celebrity guests to help with the “Bingo Gone Wild.”We have special appearances with our radio partners on specificnights, and it adds a whole new level of excitement for the guests.■What are the demographics: Our Bingo audience varies widelyfrom the 50-plus group to the first timers, who are turning 18 andwant something different to do that can be inexpensive and givethem fun entertainment value for their dollar.■What are some of the more popular Bingo promotions:We have several promotions that have been very well-received,including trips, shopping sprees, smart TVs, designer hand bagBingo, and most recently on New Year’s Eve, we gave away a newcar to one lucky guest. These promotions proved to be highlysuccessful and also brought in a larger audience to participate.■ Describe your Bingo venue: Our Bingo hall has a great mixof smoking and non-smoking seats, as well as a concessionstand we call “Blue Lagoon.” They serve everything from soups tosandwiches, fried food and salads. They also serve a select list ofbottled beers for our guests. We have ball call/pattern monitorsthroughout the hall, so no matter where you sit you can see whatball is next, as well as two TriplePlay Flashboards and three digi-tal Bonanza flashboards. Our caller desk is elevated so they cansee the whole crowd as to not miss any Bingos.

■ How do you increase interest: We try to increase our attendanceand interest by coming up with different promotions and new

Bingo games. We havea great guest base thathelps as well in tellingus what they would liketo see and play. We valuetheir feedback, and theyappreciate the fact thatwe listen to their ideas.■ Any expansions orimprovements:We recently enlarged our

non-smoking section andchanged the location of the smoking and non-smoking sections. Now the caller, payout clerk, restaurant and the restrooms arein the non-smoking section. This has been a great hit with ourguests. In January, we implemented a few new games andprogressives to our Bingo program that we think will be a greataddition to start off the new year. ■ How do Bingo managers/customers like Video King products:

• The TriplePlay™Flashboards:Our guests and team membersalike think they are bright, crisp and easy to read and see. No burnt-out light bulbs to contend with any longer, so no one misses anumber that has been called.

• The CHAMP-e:™We havehad a lot of positive feedbackwith the CHAMP-e handsets. They are also crisp and clearwith great graphics, and theyare lighter than the Champ IIs,which is a plus.

• The Bel Air™ Bingo con-sole.The Bel Air is a great Bingodesk. It is very reliable and has avery good visual presentation. ■What’s on your wish list:We are looking to add two moreTriplePlay Flashboards to ourBingo hall, as well as trying tomake it easier for our guests toget through the admission line.

to purify the air, No Ozone, a highly toxicsubstance, which calls for closing offthe room to occupants, is used. Equallyimportant, the air exchange rate. To gethealthier indoor air, you need to changethe air in the room to clean it, accordingto the unit’s manufacturer.

For improved quality air, they recom-mend 4 to 6 air exchanges per hour. For325 square feet, you get 6 exchanges perhour with this unit. For 500 square feet, you get 4. And, more purifiers can alwaysbe added to extend or improve coverage.

These are just some of the manybenefits, according to Peggy Hansen,a regional sales manager for Video King, who has scouted various products to en-hance our customers’ gaming experience.

Manufactured in the United Statessince 2001, the Catalytic PUREAIR purifiercan plug into any standard outlet, pulling.93 amps per unit. And, they require noinstallation. You just take it out of the box, plug it in, and begin to improve yourindoor air quality, she said.

Key Benefits■ Designed as a floor unit, theCatalytic PUREAIR purifiers can bepositioned virtually anywhere – betweenslot machines, within hotel rooms, out-side commercial kitchens or throughoutyour home or business.■ Occupying little space, each unit isshipped factory direct, in a double-packed

box, weighing 30 pounds and measuring24”H x 24”W x 8”D in dimension.■ The entire unit is guaranteed for twoyears, with the exception of the two filtersand UV lamp. Based on normal usage, the $19 UV and $119 filter set need tobe replaced once per year.

Environments with heavier usage andoccupancy, may need more frequent filterchanges. No special tools or training is re-quired for maintenance. Volume discountsmay apply for the replacement filters.■ Not only that, notably fast-acting, airquality improvements can be detectedwithin the first hour of usage, accordingto the multitude of satisfied customers.

So, bottom line, to attract players, the facility needsan authentic game. Like the players, the facility alsodesires a game with the capability that allows the playerto throw away a winning hand, but for a different reason.

The reason is profitability. While good players like theopportunity to better their hand and to increase their chancesof winning a prize or a better prize, the house counts on play-ers, who are not good players, players who make mistakesand play sub-optimally, to increase the facility’s profits.

So, if a “Jacks Or Better” full-pay game is a 9/7 game, with a 97.5 percent theoretical payout, then poor play lowersthe actual payout substantially, maybe to an actual payout of92 percent or 90 percent, or even less.

This means the win for the house could increase from2.5 percent to 8 percent or 10 percent or even more, equivalent to the win from some spinning reel games.
