Care of Young Children
- Dr. Rajkumar Kayal
Children are an important part of our society. We owe it to our future generations to
provide them the best possible care which will help them achieve their full innate potential
and allow them to claim their rightful place in society. This care begins with proper care of
adolescent girls who will became adults and give birth to the next generation of children.
Proper antenatal care, quality obstetric and neonatal care are the birth right of all children.
Early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth, exclusive breast feeding for first
six month of life, prevention of infection, early detection and prompt management of
medical problems – these are the cornerstone of new born and infant care. Initiation of
complementary feeding after six months of age with age appropriate food along with
continuation of breast feeding till 2 years of age play an important role in infant and young
child feeding and in prevention of the rampant problem of malnutrition. Vaccination
against common vaccine – preventable diseases is another important component of
preventive child care. Prevention and prompt management of common childhood illnesses
like diarrhoea, pneumonia, malaria etc. will contribute significantly in bringing down the
high infant and under five mortality rates.
4
Children need a lot of love and a caring environment for their proper upbringing.
Prevention of common childhood accidents and providing a safe environment is another
important aspect of child care – parents and authorities need to be more sensitised to this
issue. Most childhood injuries are preventable and many of them are potentially life-
threatening or can cause long term disability if not handled properly.
Child care is a vast subject; however the present article has covered only some aspects of
care of children below school age.
Healthy Heart: Take a Road to healthy heart.
- Dr. Amit Tiwari
Nowadays heart diseases are increasing in our society which is a major cause of death. Our
lifestyle, unhealthy eating are making us morbid. Also many of us are making our life
stressful which is making our heart unhealthy.
Today’s fast paced life and work place premises escalate stress levels, taking a toll on ones
heart. We must realize that the healing power of the body decreases under stress leading
to many complications like Hypertension, Diabetes, poor immunity, etc. Today even
youngsters are prone to Heart ailments and other diseases which were earlier found only in
the elderly age group.
So it is very important to stay healthy and manage your stress level and eat healthy. This
may be achieved by the following simple changes in lifestyle:
1. avoid smoking,
2. cut down on salt,
3. watch your diet,
4. monitor your alcohol intake,
5. become active, exercise at least 30 minutes every day,
6. Timely monitor of Blood Pressure, Blood sugar level and Blood Cholesterol level,
7. Manage your waist size,
8. manage your stress level,
9. Check your family history and consult with your doctor accordingly,
10. Laughter is the best therapy.

Importance of Balanced Diet and Active Lifestyle
-Dr. Kuldip Paul Chaudhuri
The food we eat contains Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Minerals, Vitamins and other
essential micronutrients. Hence we should ensure that our daily meals and other food
intake throughout the day, contain all the above mentioned elements of food. Usually
Indian Diet contains carbohydrates abundantly in the form of rice and roti. But does our
daily diet contain enough protein, vitamins and minerals? To ensure a balanced diet we
should take fruits, protein containing food such as milk, soya bean, pulses; leafy vegetables
along with roti and rice on a regular basis. Eggs, meat and fish are rich sources of protein,
fats and Vitamins. But some followers of mixed diet in India do not consume them on
12
regular basis and tend to overcook them destroying the vitamin and essential micronutrient
contents and of course vegetarians remain deprived of such food items forever.
The middle class population In India usually opts for obtaining High educational
qualification and at the same time choosing for themselves a more sedentary order of the
day which in turn leads to acquiring lifestyle diseases in early middle age. Thanks to the
advancement in Medical Science, that we are able to fight these menaces such as
Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus. But being unhealthy acts as a hindrance to
professional advancement and at the same time creates an uneasy environment in our
socio-cultural life.
Hence the incorporation of active life in the form of sports and healthy eating habits from
the very childhood is an utter necessity. If we are ready to bring such changes to our lives,
then only can we think of acquiring a few more medals in Olympic Games and other
international athletic meets. Very truly said: “Healthy People - Healthy Nation”.
