We Brits are known for being good in a crisis & gracious in defeat. We have hadplenty of practice at both! But taking on another country in something they are born& bred to do could be deemed foolhardy.

(Think Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, need I say more!?) And when that something is horseReining in it’s Yankee homeland, some would say completely nuts!

But that is exactly what Tammy Greaves a young English girl from the New Forest is hoping todo in September in the World Equestrian Games held in Kentucky, U.S.A. Where she willrepresent the United Kingdom on ‘Jac Wonders Who’, or as he is more affectionately known,Yella. The most beautiful Palomino stallion you could possibly lay eyes on. There is just oneproblem, money. Tammy needs to raise funds to take her to America & the transatlantictransportation of a horse is no easy or cheap feat.

Before you think what chance could she possibly have, let me tell you this young lady has animpressive track record.

When most of usare still gettingthe hang ofputting one foot infront of the otherTammy, age two,was alreadylearning to rideher first horseBubbles. At age12 she competedin her firstwestern show &since then her listof achievementsare truly amazing, especially whenyou consider sheis still only 22.

I don’t haveenough room onthe page to listTammy'sachievements

individually, but this will give you some idea - 2001-5, 2002-14, 2003-12, 2004-23, 2005-28,2006-15, 2007-13, 2008-5, 2009-12, & so far this year 4. I make that one hundred & thirtyone awards! All of this has been self funded as Tammy does not receive any sponsorship help.

I love our cousins across the pond, I have family there & spend most holidays in some part oranother of the United States. Yet I admit cannot help but have a tweak of excitement at thethought of beating them at their own game. Don’t you?

So Tammy go kick some American butt!

FishyFishy has come toPoole - it’s been aneager wait for thelaunch of thesecond FishyFishyrestaurant on thesouth coast.

Headed up by celebrity TVpresenter Dermot O'Leary and two ofhis best buddies (Pictured; Paul Shovlin

left, James Ginzler right) the new restaurant is billed as offering up a; 'desirable, affordable andsocially conscious place to eat', and that place is on Poole’s Dolphin Quays.

The new menu shows that there is fabulous choice, focusing on the seasonal catch and relations with localbusinesses, yet it presents a real choice of dining options.

It is also very apparent that the team sticks to its mantra of 'affordable' and in comparison to some otherwaters' edge and beach side restaurants in Poole the costs are very attractive indeed and should set aprecedent - location, location, location doesn't mean pricey, pricey, pricey! You do the math - fish and chipsfrom FishyFishy - under a tenner!

Look forward to; seasonal channel fish and prawn curry with cardamom rice. Whole barbecue mackerel withnew potatoes. Rope-grown mussel, roasted garlic, chilli and tomato pasta and channel sea bass with summerherbs and lime!

The restaurant is set to house 130 covers with stunning alfresco dining overlooking the marina and BrownseaIsland serving fresh, local and seasonal seafood alongside traditional brasserie favourites.

The original FishyFishy that set the pace is in Brighton, it opened in 2009 and has a really high standard thatthe chaps promise to maintain in Poole!

Dermot said: "Opening our own restaurant was something we'd dreamed of for a long time before welaunched last year (in Brighton) and we’re loving every minute of it!"

"We know there will be a lot of hard work involved in making a success of Poole and maintainingBrighton's reputation, but we feel ready for the challenge and very fortunate to have the opportunity to dowhat we love in another town. We're just happy that other people are enjoying FishyFishy as much as we are!"

FishyFishy is a much-appreciated newcomer to Poole, after all it is time for some new kids on the block with afresh outlook, attitude and frankly something for other dining establishments to sit up and take note of!

Welcome FishyFishy!

The Art Memorial Company was established in 1946by a Mr John Knowles on a site at BournemouthRoad, Parkstone that had been used for themanufacture and sale of stone products andmemorials since the early 1900s. In fact, at the turnof the century a large swath of main road land atBournemouth Road appears to have been owned by awealthy Italian lady who eventually sold off various sitesto both English and Italian people.

One of these sites became a monumental masons works, importing large quantities of Carrera White marble fromItaly.

Just after the second world war in 1946 the masonry sitewas purchased by a Mr John Knowles. Mr John Knowleswas a stone mason who had moved to Poole with his wifefrom Manchester. John Knowles, having been to Artschool in Manchester in the early 1930s had served an

apprenticeship in masonry and letter carving and had created many individualmonuments in the Manchester, Oldham and Liverpoolareas before moving down to Poole.

From workshops in Bournemouth Road, working alone, hebecame well known during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Hemanufactured, by hand, memorials, statues and fountainsin marble, granite, Purbeck and Portland stones.

Over a fifty year period John Knowles carried out manyprestigious sculptures and memorials for local dignitariesand the whole main road frontage was used as a displayarea for stone products.

Memorials were erected all over England from theBournemouth Road site.

In fact, “Jack” Knowles, as he became known locally, had apolicy of “distance is no object”.

John Knowles then taught his son, John Robert Knowles, who was born in Poole, to carve and cut letters in marble, stone and granite. However, his son moved on and became successful in various businesses over thenext twenty years.

“Jack” Knowles amazed people by his ability to move exceedingly heavy blocks ofstone alone, by hand, despite his small stature.

He was still working in this fashion, full time, until his death in 2000 at the age of 84.

In his latter years, the main premisesat BournemouthRoad becamedilapidated andrun down.

Due to his age, hewas only able toconcentrate on hisimmediate day today monumentalwork in hand.

After his death, hisson, John RobertKnowles (who had worked with his father 35 years earlier) returned to England tohelp take care of his aged mother. John Knowles was disappointed to see how thepremises had become run down and elected to revamp the business, turningdilapidated workshops into showrooms and renovating the display area.

The premises has gradually become refurbished over the past four years and JohnRobert Knowles has attempted to return the site to it’s former glory that heremembers as a little boy some 50 years earlier.

Now, the Art Memorial Company has diversified its products to include ceramics andchimeneas from Mexico, decorative bronzes from Thailand, Water features andfountains from USA and marble sculptures from India and Java.

However, the mainstay of the business is still artistic and distinctive memorials andthe range of styles and different types of marble and granites, that are nowavailable from all over the world, have grown considerably since Mr John Knowles’father hand masoned many hundreds of memorials all those years ago.

I have many happy memories of my time as an apprentice at Bolson’s shipYard, which is now occupiedby Sunseeker’s. The annual Regatta particularly stands out.

All employees ceased work for the day and were encouraged to enter events like the Greasy Pole, the DinghyRace, the Flour and Soot Fight and swimming and diving competitions. All these events took place fromthe slipway at the Number 1 Yard, Ferry Road, Hamworthy at high tide. The Greasy Pole was a favourite.A wooden mast, boom or telegraph pole, most importantly without splinters, was extended over the waterwith a flag secured at the outer end. The Greasy Pole entrant would sit astride the pole and shuffle along ituntil he retrieved the flag and brought it back to shore. The next person would take the flag and replace itat the end of the pole and so on. This might seem straightforward enough, but this was a Greasy Pole and

it was covered in tallow (the grease we usedfor launching ships) so many competitorslanded in the drink long before they got to theend of the pole. Another Greasy Pole eventinvolved two competitors sitting astride thepole trying to knock each other off withpillows. That wasn’t so bad if you were oneof the first entrants but once those old featherpillows had been in the water a few times youfelt like you’d been hit with a sack of rivets.

The most exciting event for us apprenticeswas the dinghy race from Number 2 Yard atWest Quay Road to Number 1 Yard. Therewere several different small vessels availableand the teams drew lots for them. Once, Iremember my team of six drew the heaviestboat. We were issued with ‘Long Toms’,

paintbrushes as long as broom handles, for paddles. The start was sounded and we set off with the tide inour favour, paddling furiously with our broom handled brushes. At first, the lighter vessels forged aheadbut once we established a co-ordinated rhythm, we started gaining on them and by the time we reachedHamworthy Lifting Bridge we were amongst them. Our stamina was strong (teenagers don’t seem to gettired) and, realising we could win this race, we put in an extra burst of effort. Sadly, in doing so, we startedto go off course, colliding with our opponents brush paddles. This was no Oxford and Cambridge BoatRace and mayhem broke out. The brushes were used as water swabs to drench each other, boats were boardedand capsized and many of us ended up in the ‘Hoggin’ (water). Everything ended in disarray and the racewas finished. Who won? Not us, but we had a marvellous time.

The Flour and Soot Fight went much the same way. Two teams in two boats, one carrying soot and theother flour, with the object of the game to turn your opponents black or white depending on yourammunition. One chap I remember was swimming around with a cardboard box over his head and shouldersto protect himself from the onslaught.

Recently I stood on Bill Elkin’s ferry steps where the Shipwright Arms used to stand on the Hamworthyside of the Quay. I thought “Do the employees of boatYards have exciting, chaotic, fun events like thatanymore?”

The Last Airbender (2010)

Director: M Night Shyamalan

If M Night Shyamalan’s po-faced fantasy epic were half as much fun as itsridiculous title suggests, it might have been possible to salvage a smidgenof entertainment from it. Instead, one is bored and stupefied by whatseems like an eternity of vacuous spectacle, cod-Buddhist tosh andclunking dialogue. Even more embarrassing than the risible ‘Lady in theWater’, this wildly misjudged farrago is portentous but never profound, laughable but not remotely funny and action-packed without ever beingexciting – all in fuzzy, retro-fitted 3D.

Having been awol for 100 years – during which time the world was thrownout of balance (yawn) and the bellicose Fire Nation conquered the peacefulSouthern Water Tribe with their fearsome war machines – the shaven-headed Aang (Noah Ringer) is released from a sphere of ice by two WaterTribe children,Katara (Nicola Peltz)and her olderbrother Sokka(Jackson Rathbone). It looks like Aangmay be the mythicalAvatar, the onlybeing who cancontrol all fourelements: Earth,Fire, Water and Air.Various interestedparties, includingthe Fire Nation’svengeful, exiledPrince Zuko (DevPatel), aredetermined to harness or suppress the Avatar’s powers.

A series of confusing adventures, explosive battles and vaguely spiritualconfrontations follows, while giant furry creatures float in the air, talkingdragon spirits offer sage advice, and the moon turns red with shame.Devotees of the original Nickleodeon animated TV series swear this filmadaptation is a travesty of its meaningful, allegorical themes – but most ofthem were aged between six and 12 when they first saw it. Either way, ifyour actual or mental age exceeds this, steer well clear.

Well we know that frills are de riguer this season & that nude & naturals are theshades to be seen in. But what does one wear when it’s festival season in theEnglish country side?

Look no further than Kate Moss & her pal Lily Allen for your inspiration.

For no self respecting celeb would be seen at Glastonbury & the like without their Hunterwellies. In fact wellies are now almost as ‘in’ as a pair of Jimmy Choos or Monolos dahling.Okay maybe not quite, but definitely as popular as the Ugg, AND they are waterproof toboot!(Sorry but you must know by now I can never pass up an opportunity for a pun).

But unlike other designer footwear a pair of Hunters doesn’t run away with the noughts, they come in at a mere £60! And much harder wearing than your Choo’s.

Worried that they may not co-ordinate with your wardrobe or be a little boring? After allblack wellies are so last year. No problem coz amongst the usual black & green they comein PINK, SILVER, PURPLE & classic NAVY.

Need a wider fit? Then you will love the Huntress.

But in these cash strapped times your pockets may not be deep enough. And if like meyou have champagne taste but beer money, there is a way to get the designer lookwithout the price tag.

Putting The Boot In

Or perhaps you have a pair of favourite wellies that could do with a bit of jazzing up?

Well posh wellie people Hunter have a solution. Launched recently are  these fabulousliners to pop inside your wellies that have a rather smart trim/cuff which rolls over thetop of the boot emblazoned with the Hunter logo. Viola wellie makeover!

These come in fuschia  pink at £15.00 or if your feeling a little wild black with tiger orleopard print for £30.00 . Not bad for turning your high street wellies in to a look as wornby Jody Kidd & Madonna etc.

Or, how about giving your Ugg Boots or your Fitflop Boots a completely new look withBOOT HUGS !These are a band with feathers, beads, pom poms or tassles in a variety of colours whichare worn around the top, middle or ankle of your boot to give a distinctive & stylish newlook. At £ 25.00 per pair they are the perfect Christmas gift for all of those Uggie style bootwearers !

Boot Hugs are brand new to the UK and are available online at www.boothugs.org fromSeptember 2010.

I know a lot of things are said about teenagers manners etc,but if I'm honest, I think that the elderly are as bad, if not, worse than teenagers. I will always offer my seat on the busif an older person gets on and there’s not a lot of room, Iwill also always hold a door open for someone, I think itsrude not to, but I'll either get ignored, or they'll accept itwithout any gratitude.

Me and my friend were sat in Bournemouth square, chatting, and an elderly woman walked by, and started raising her voice, telling us how there are benches, and we shouldn't be sat on the grass. It wasquite embarrassing as the only reason we were sat there was because there wasno space on the benches, but we just waited for her to go, then we moved. Ido not have the opinion that all elderly people are rude, because that wouldn'tbe accurate, it’s just the fact that the people that are rude would probably bethe first to complain about teenagers.

To be honest I'm either being ignored, or stared at ( I've had three people askto have a picture taken with me and my friends in the last couple of months, which is kind of weird, they say it’s because we are so brightly dressed) Idon’t suggest you do this!

It still annoys me that the elderly seem to judge all teenagers by the few thatreceive bad press etc… I can say now that there are quite a few older peoplewho are really nice, and that wouldn't dream of being so rude to teenagers. But, like teenagers, it’s the minority that get judged.

Have you ever realised how a lot of the elderly seem to walk straight towardsyou, so that you’re forced to move for them, even if it would have been awhole lot easier for them to take a step to the side?

My brother and I have often said next time it happens we won’t move, butthen they get so close, it’s a reflex that we really should....

I often say to myself, next time, just don't smile at them, but you know if youdon't smile, that they will go home and say how rude they think teenagers are,you just can't win…What are your views on this? Join me next month,Bethxx

I see the old Soda stream from the 70’s istrying to make a comeback. For those tooyoung to remember it basically puts fizz inyour drinks.

But how about some fizz in your face?Literally!

It seems the latest rejuvenation treatmentcalled carboxytherapy, is carbon dioxide gasbeing injected into your skin.

Here comes the science bit. Apparently the tiny bubbles, just like the ones in champagne, increase oxygenation & blood flow. The gas makes the red blood cells release oxygen into thetissues to counteract the high concentration of carbon dioxide, thus rejuvenating the area.

Now the ‘What will it do for me’ bit;

It won’t get rid of deep lines but will improve skin quality.

It is also said to increase collagen production, (this is what gives our skin the nice padding wehave when young, which sadly decreases as we age), banishes dark under eyes circles, tightens jowls, even reduces cellulite, banishes stretch marks & melts away fat. This therapyhas been used to treat heart & circulatory problems since the 1930’s.

No I haven’t finished yet - there is even talk of it being used to treat baldness. Or should I havesaid those with diminished hair coverage, to be pc. We are told it is quite safe as carbondioxide is naturally present in our body.

Good Lord it sounds miraculous, is there anything it cannot do?

Where do I sign up? Though I would need an estimate & small mortgage to tackle all myproblem areas!

Any drawbacks, before we rush to re-mortgage the house? Well according to consultant plasticsurgeon Charles Nduka who is founder of safercosmeticsurgery.co.uk, he hasn’t seen anyclinical trials to prove it is beneficial. Nor has been approved by the FDA, (food & drugsadministration) in America who carry out rigorous testing.

The approximate cost is £100-£150 per treatment, several are needed.

So for now I will just stick with the bubbles in my sparkling wine. A few of those & I won’t noticethe lack of ‘fizz’ in my face!

Book Review

Turning the Blues Around is a moving and inspirational reflection, where Irene discusseswith honesty her symptoms, treatment and recovery from the four bouts of clinicaldepression she suffered in her early adult life, before she went on to train as a nurse.

The reader gains an intimate picture of what it feels like to suffer from depression, one ofthe achievements of this book being the communication of deep feelings. The ideabehind the book is to offer hope to sufferers of depression, to inform health professionalsand healthcare students, but most of all to give an enjoyable and informative read foranyone interested. The dramatic opening will make the reader want to read on and on.

The book serves as a full study of depression, having been written by a trained nurse.Irene informs us on subjects such as psychiatric medication, electro-convulsive therapyand talking therapy. We learn about life in a psychiatric hospital from the viewpoint ofboth a patient and a member of staff. Well read on the subject of mental health, Ireneillustrates her book with quotations from other authors and uses extracts from herpersonal medical notes for added interest.

Written in conversational style, Irene brings light to the subject, with colourfuldescription of places where she lived and worked, of her wedding days, her love ofsinging and dancing, flowers and fabrics. She gives us interesting and sometimeshumorous anecdotes from her personal life and nursing career.

Throughout the book Irene’s spiritual strength is evident, and we follow her path to astronger faith.Irene beats the serious illness ofdepression and moves on to help others, where thereader learns about her life as a student nurse, staffnurse and community nurse.

She recounts the proudest moment of her career, whenshe was asked to play a big part in the setting up of theimproved Mother and Baby Unit at St. Ann’s Hospital,Poole.

We accompany Irene on the journey of this finallytriumphant and uplifting story.

The last chapter offers ideas for coping with stress andavoiding depression and gives helpful suggestions tofriends and relatives caring for a depressed person.

GIVE US THE WOW FACTOR!

Doom, gloom and cutbacks, who knows where the proverbial axe will fall next whenour local authorities decide which budgets will be cut.

No doubt it will effect us all in some way shape or form.

I read with interest an article in a national paper recently about the simple things inlife that make us happy, things that make us smile. When a traffic light turns greenjust as we approach, a baby laughing, waking up to sunlight streaming through thecurtains. The list is as varied as it is endless.

Being fortunate enough tolive and work in Poole thereare many natural, beautifulvistas - the sea, thebeaches, Shell Bay is aslovely as any beach in theCaribbean, The Purbecksand the country fieldscomplete with horses andcattle not ten minutesaway from the centre ofPoole.

I, like many others, travelalong the Holes Bay roaddaily and never tire of thesight of yachts and boatsbobbing on the water. Andwhen the sun shines andthe water sparkles it reallygives me a feel goodfactor. Just one thing thatspoils it - the awful, scrubbybushes between the roadand the bay. Which apart from looking like the sad remains of a bush fire, in partscuts your view of the bay completely!

How much nicer it would be to have palm trees along there. Not only would it give ita touch of the riviera but think how attractive the area would look especially to ourmuch needed visitors.

I can see it now on the front cover of the Poole tourist information brochures. Allthose if favour say ayi!

P.S. Just in case you were wondering where the council would get the money, Ihappen to know it is available.

Win - Win for PooleBy Bruce Grant-Braham

Chairman of the Poole TourismManagement Board

When are we going to wise up tothe environmental andcommercial opportunities ofPoole's unique selling point - thebeautiful harbour?

The well-intentioned Council seemsto receive numerous consultant'sreports giving advice on how to caterfor the car driver - both businessand visitor. Fine, we all need ourcars but these landlubber consultantsoften fail to acknowledge that Poole is a port and always has been. So what, you say?

The historic origins of the town of Poole lie in the deep water of the quayside which was needed whenWareham became un-navigable for the evolving deeper draught commercial vessels. As a result thetrade with Newfoundland became a vital element of the town's economy in what was perhaps the firstgolden age.

As chairman of Poole's Tourism Management Board I have, for longer than I care to remember, championed the need to increase waterborne tourism. The mercenary reason is that statistics showthat every "yachttie" spends in excess of £70 each night in every port visited.

There is evidence that Poole cannot, at the moment, cater for demand from yachts and their crews. Why? There is a lack of space in the Poole Quay Yacht Haven - only 110 visiting spaces - and thealternative of rafting up alongside the Quay is both uncomfortable and inconvenient. Imagine being theinnermost of four yachts and wanting to leave first! Some sailors are actually avoiding Poole becauseof the lack of proper facilities, I'm reliably informed.

Across the Channel even the smallest seaside town such as St Vaast has larger berthing facilities thanPoole and cities like Cherbourg (Poole's twin town) are in a different league entirely.

What Poole needs is an appropriately sized yacht haven so all those sailing crews can move from theQuay into the Old Town to spend their £70s in the shops and restaurants.

The advantages are numerous. The Old Town would come alive and employment would be enhanced.Additionally visitors would sail to Poole in perhaps the most environmentally friendly mode of transport- a wind propelled yacht. Their cars would not impact on those consultant's proposed roads as theywould be in their home port.

Let's wise up, encourage the Harbour Commissioners, and create a Win-Win situation all round inPoole.

What’s Happening To Poole Park Lake?

* There has been a rapid spread of a "stringy" weed (tasselweed) across the lake. This weed is rooted and can typically be seen about 6 inches below the surface.

* In addition blanket weed has grown which sits on the lake surface and canaccumulate in lake cornersdepending on the wind direction.

* The growth is almostcertainly due to a combination ofthe hot weather, sunshine, water temperature and nutrientlevels in the water.

* The vegetation decomposesand it is this decompositionprocess that is releasing anodour.

* The growth is typical ofmany water bodies elsewhere inthe country this summer andHoles Bay is also badly affected.
