How to get to Nanaimo

By Air:

There are regular, 15-minute flights from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Nanaimo-Collishaw Airport (YCD).

By Sea & Land: The best route is by BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay (Trans-Canada Highway #1), West Vancouver to Departure Bay, Nanaimo. The ferry trip is very beautiful and takes about 1.5 hours.

Another BC Ferries route is from Tsawwassen in Southern Vancouver to Duke Point in Nanaimo. This is also a beautiful trip and takes about 2 hours.

Award winning poet, novelist and essayist Dionne Brand gave a memorable reading and lecture as VIU’s 2006 Gustafson Distinguished Poet. Her writing is notable for the beauty of its language and for its engagement with issues of social justice.

VIU physics professor Ray Penner organized an action packed “extreme science” show to raise funds for a charity in Africa, which provides LED lighting to secondary schools in rural Malawi where students attend evening study sessions.

“�[Undergrad research] is almost unheard of at larger institutions. I feel very lucky. These opportunities at VIU far exceeded what I expected to get out of my undergraduate experience.”

— Jake Etzkorn, VIU BSc grad and international researcher, is currently working

on a research project in Seattle , funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, evaluating the

effectiveness of existing regulatory monitoring stations in predicting air quality. He is also working on a project at Nanaimo’s Pacific Biological Station examining ultraviolet radiation

and its effects on juvenile salmon, and is beginning a field project looking at how

environmental factors affect the biomass of algae in rivers on Vancouver Island.


Anne McCarthy, a technologist in VIU’s Fisheries and Aquaculture department, is experimenting with a new aquaponics system which combines traditional hydroponics and aquaculture. Fish waste is recycled into adjoining tanks which contain growing vegetable plants. The plants’ roots absorb the fish waste and clean the water. The cleaned water is pumped back into the fish tanks.

VIU Outdoor Recreation Programs

provide students with the opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor activities

at a reasonable cost. Go kayaking, climbing, skiing, caving, rafting, surfing

Nanaimo is a centrally located Vancouver Island community of 79,000 and is home to the main VIU campus. The island has the mildest Canadian climate and a spectacular landscape. Downtown Nanaimo is steps from the harbour and hosts shops, pubs and outdoor eateries. A waterfront walkway and lookout, right, are popular meeting points for residents and visitors.

History students commemorate Canadian war experiencesUnder the direction of History Professor Dr. Stephen Davies, students assist with The Canadian Letters & Images Project (CLIP), a unique online archive of Canadian war experiences.

“The objective of CLIP is to let Canadians tell their own story in their own words by creating a permanent online archive preserving Canada’s wartime correspondence from the battlefront and from the home front,” said Davies, who started the project in 2000.

The collection now has over 6,000 donated letters and images available, with another 4,000 in the process of being digitized and added to the site.

Although it was created for students, The Canadian Images and Letters project is now being utilized by researchers, professional historians, and scholars around the world.

Recently, the Canadian War Museum used images in an exhibit that were only available through this project, and the Senior Historian of the museum uses the site for classes at Carelton University.

History students help transcribe the letters onto the online archive, and study some of the soldiers in depth. Davies took a group of students to France and Belgium in spring 2008 as part of a three week field school, which turned into an unforgettable and moving experience. “The students searched out specific grave sites and left laminated photos and letters of soldiers they studied in class.”

Student designers rockIt was a clean sweep for Vancouver Island University (VIU) graphic design students in a prestigious design competition.

VIU students claimed all three student awards in the print category of the Rock Awards, a competition sponsored by the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC Vancouver Island Chapter).

Student Faye M. McCoole won a Rock Award for her book entry titled Art Deco: Fashioning a Style, while Sarita Mielke won a merit award for the interior layout of the popular student magazine, Portal. Josh Nychuk won a merit award for the Portal magazine cover.

“Our students won the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada BC provincial Salazar Awards for best student work in a two-year Graphic Design program six years in a row,” said Karen Hodgson, professor and co-chair of VIU’s Graphic Design degree program.”

Graduates from the program enjoy about an 80 percent job placement rate, with many of them hired by major design firms in Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver and elsewhere.

VIU’s Art and Design department launched a Graphic Design degree (Bachelor of Arts Major in Graphic Design) in September 2008, the only full degree program of its kind on Vancouver Island.

Hodgson said a unique feature of the degree program is a “management stream” for students interested in studio management or entrepreneurial management. “There’s currently no similar program in Canada that includes this component,” she said.

Student internship program at VIU is making a big impact in the business worldSixty students in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program recently completed four-month internships for high profile companies and organizations, including the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, Meyers Norris Penny Chartered Accountants, Nanaimo Airport Commission, the Business Development Bank of Canada and the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board, to name a few.

“The response from regional businesses and organizations in supporting our MBA students has been fantastic,” said John Woychuk, Internship Coordinator. “Employers tell us the interns have exceeded their expectations.”

VIU’s MBA program and internship component is unique in Canada. Students earn two degrees – a Master’s in Business Administration from VIU and a Master’s in Science in International Business from Hertfordshire University in the United Kingdom.

They complete one year of intensive course work, then a four month internship where they apply their skills and knowledge in a real world setting. The 14-month program is offered in a condensed time-frame so students can enter the workforce faster. “Students love it. The program builds a bridge from their education to the workforce,” said Woychuk.

MBA student Veronica Villalva attests to the value of the internship experience. She left Mexico City a year ago to live and study in Canada. As an intern, Villalva worked for the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance (VIEA), helping plan and organize the 2008 Vancouver Island Economic Summit.

“Together with another student intern, I spent four months meeting with mayors, community leaders, First Nations leaders, and others in several Island communities including Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Alberni, Courtenay, Comox and Gold River to learn about the state of Vancouver Island’s economy,” she explained. “A highlight was interviewing Vancouver Island University’s new Chancellor, Chief Shawn Atleo. He has a huge and great perspective on life.

“Our research and fact-finding will form part of the State of the Economy Address by the Chair of the VIEA during the Summit. My internship confirmed that positive thinking, hard work, and good relationships are key to opening doors. There will be always challenges but with every challenge there will be new opportunities too.”

Enrich your education experience with study abroad programs The Early Childhood Education & Care, Child & Youth Care and Nursing programs at VIU, together with the faculties of Psychology and English (Teacher Training) at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University in Indonesia, are engaged in an international project to develop curriculum in Early Childhood Development for individuals working with children in Surabaya, Indonesia.

The project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the Association of Community Colleges of Canada (ACCC).

The two universities are also working together to create relevant practical experiences for Canadian students interested in overseas practicum and work placement opportunities.

A course, co-taught by Canadian and Indonesian faculty will be delivered in the evenings for the Indonesian students. The Canadian students will also be invited to participate in some of these classes.

The CCPP/ACCC project provides an exceptional and exciting opportunity for cross-cultural experiences for both Canadian and Indonesian students and faculty.

VIU students educate others about climate changeVIU students want to motivate, inspire and educate their high school peers to be proactive about climate change.

Fisheries and Aquaculture student Carol Bob is the driving force behind VIU’s student Chemistry Club and its ancillary group, Awareness of Climate Change through Education (ACE).

ACE has developed a 40-minute PowerPoint presentation for Grade 10 students about the science of climate change. The presentation includes information about greenhouse gases, global warming and what students can do to help reduce their carbon footprint.

“The mandate of ACE’s public outreach initiative is to raise awareness about the science of climate change and the resulting environmental impacts,” said Bob. “We want to promote a sense of urgency around climate change action and discuss solutions. Our goal is to motivate high school students to take actions in their own lives that will contribute to the sustainability of the planet and reduce our carbon footprint. Every person can make a difference.”

Bob’s motivation to launch the Chemistry Club and ACE came from Chemistry Professor Dr. Erik Krogh.

“Dr. Krogh is passionate about protecting the environment,” she said. “His enthusiasm is contagious. You hear him speak and you just have to do something. He’s my inspiration.”

The Club will provide social activities, academic leadership and professional development opportunities to its members through Chemistry Student Initiatives (CSI). Members will have the opportunity to enhance their academic interests by volunteering with local high schools, professional societies, environmental agencies and their peers. It’s going to be a great learning experience for everyone,” said Bob. “It’s a good way to develop communication skills, professional contacts, and networking opportunities with the general public and potential employers.”

Krogh is also co-director of the Applied Environmental Research laboratory at VIU. “It’s a terrific learning experience for students,” he said. “As a professor, it’s great to see students so motivated and inspired by their classroom learning.”

VIU students make a differenceVIU students have plenty of amazing opportunities. Just ask Christine LoScerbo. She was chosen as one of 20 Canadian and American student volunteers for the United Nation’s “Kick the Carbon Habit” Education Campaign Youth Network. The campaign aims to make a dent in climate change by educating people on how to lower their carbon consumption.

A student in VIU’s Geography department, LoScerbo served as a resource for community groups and schools across BC, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, supporting individuals and groups with their efforts to make changes and educate their communities. She’s continued this work through her involvement with the VIU campus group, Solutions: A Sustainability Network, which is also part of goBEYOND, a youth-led project at BC’s post-secondary institutions, which works to educate, inspire, engage and support others in taking action against climate change.

Steven Earle, Chair of VIU’s Geology Department, invited LoScerbo to apply for the Kick the Carbon Habit project. “I think it’s a real honour for VIU. Christine was one of four Canadian students chosen. It’s an important initiative to get the message out to students that we all need to work on climate change.”

With climate change a growing global concern, LoScerbo thinks these networks can be an important resource for people. “We want to help people get more groups going in the community, starting those small changes that we can all make to lessen our impact.”

LoScerbo said VIU’s Geography program, and her focus on urban planning, allows her to incorporate sustainability issues into her coursework. “I’m really excited about the responsibility and ability to integrate seemingly outside interests into the set curriculum and projects,” she explained. “There are many issues locally that inspire me.”

“VIU is an amazing campus community, particularly in the realm of sustainability,” she said. “We’re moving forward full throttle and covering a wide range of sustainability issues because of our research as an institution.”

With so much of her time spent working on sustainability issues, there is no doubt that this young woman is dedicated to making a difference. “I’m extremely passionate about sustainability. It’s a worthwhile endeavour.”

VIU grad receives Alberta teaching awardVancouver Island University Education graduate Jennifer Koganow recently received the Alberta School Board Association’s Edwin Parr Award recognizing her as one of the province’s best first year teachers.

Koganow was shocked when she learned she had received the prestigious award, but her former instructors at VIU were not.

“I can honestly say that Jennifer Koganow exemplifies the outcomes of our Education program. She is an outstanding educator,” said Mary O’Neill, one of Koganow’s former instructors.

After graduating from the concurrent Bachelor of Art/Bachelor of Education program at VIU in 2006, Koganow decided to apply for her Alberta Teaching Certificate. The Alberta-British Columbia Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement made this easy and her teacher training at VIU gave her all she needed to qualify.

Koganow, 26, now teaches grade three at Derek Taylor Public School in Grande Prairie. She helped open the new school in September 2007.

“It’s perfect, exactly where I want to be,” she said. “I love the smiles on the kids faces every morning and knowing they are excited to be in my classroom.”

Koganow grew up in Quesnel, B.C. and came to VIU to start her degree. She only intended to stay for a couple of years but once the five-and-a-half-year Bachelor of Art/Bachelor of Education program opened up, she decided to complete her degree on Vancouver Island.

“I made lots of friends at VIU,” said Koganow. “The small university atmosphere made it easy for

me to make close relationships with my professors.”

“It was a privilege to have worked and learned alongside Jennifer,” added O’Neill. “Our faculty understands the responsibility we share in crafting teachers to enter this challenging and

demanding profession. All of us here in VIU’s Education program are honoured to have contributed to Jennifer’s success. We’re very proud of her.”

VIU responds to industry demand with a Hospitality Management degreeSix years after graduating from Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) two-year Hospitality Management diploma program, Melissa Townsend landed a great job as General Manager at the Best Western Hotel Northgate Inn in Nanaimo.

Now, thanks to the support of her employer, Townsend is back in the classroom two days a week completing her degree.

Townsend is one of a number of working professionals who are returning to school to further their education. She jumped at the chance to enrol in VIU’s new Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree program, launched in September, 2009.

“The flexibility of the part-time degree program allows me to remain at my current job, and continue my education at the same time,” she said. “I wanted to stay in the industry, meet my financial and personal goals, and work towards my educational goals.”

Townsend completed the diploma program in 2001, and was hired immediately with the Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria as a Front Desk Agent and rose quickly through the ranks to Guest Services Manager. She accepted the General Manager position at the Best Western Northgate Inn just over a year ago.

“I have no doubt that my education from VIU was a huge factor in achieving my career success,” she said. “Now I feel that in order to move forward in my career, I need to further my education once again. The decision to come back to VIU to finish my degree was an easy one. The more education you receive, the better, and the further you are able to go forward in your field. A lot of positions now require a degree. Since I have started my degree, I’m amazed how much I’ve learned.”

The degree combines study and paid experience through three co-operative education work placements throughout the four-year program. For people already working within the industry, the flexibility of the new degree program allows students to enter directly into year three on a full-time or part-time basis.

Culinary Arts student places fourth in the worldCulinary Arts grad Carlos Rodriguez is still amazed about the “once-in-a-life-time” opportunity he had at VIU. While a student, Carlos won an all-expenses paid trip to Dubai after winning first place in LG Home Chef, a national cooking competition sponsored by LG Electronics.

Representing the Culinary Institute of Vancouver Island at VIU, Rodriguez beat competitors from well-known Culinary Arts programs in Quebec and Ontario, before competing in Dubai in a global cooking competition where he placed fourth in the world.

“Every once in a while, our students get these amazing opportunities,” said Debbie Shore, an instructor in VIU’s Culinary Institute. “In this case, the stars aligned perfectly for Carlos.”

“Carlos walked into our teaching kitchen at VIU at that exact moment, returning from a two-month co-operative education placement at Mission Hill Winery in Kelowna. We knew he’d be the perfect fit for this competition.”

Rodriguez spent two full weeks practicing for Dubai. “Every chef at VIU mentored and coached me,” he said. “They were fantastic and offered a lot of positive encouragement.”

Originally from Venezuela, Rodriguez arrived at VIU with no interest in cooking. He began working on a Global Studies degree in 2002 and supported himself through school by working as a dishwasher and line cook at local restaurants.

He fell in love with cooking. After completing his Global Studies degree, Carlos hung it on his wall, and enrolled in the one-year Culinary Arts certificate program. The day he graduated, he entered the two-year diploma program.

“Cooking is clearly where my passion lies,” he said.

Rodriguez’s international success followed on the heels of many provincial accolades for his cooking talents. He won a gold medal at the EAT Vancouver show, and a silver medal at the BC Junior Chefs competition.

According to Shore, he’s an up-and-coming star of VIU’s Culinary Arts program. “We’re so proud of Carlos. He’s an exceptional student who will go far in his culinary career.”

Admission to VIU English Language Centre Program

• High school graduation with 6 years of previous English language study – TOEFL, IELTS, or other test scores are accepted but not required. For students interested in studying in university whose first language is not English, the Language Centre provides a pathway to enter university without needing to complete the TOEFL, IELTS or other language proficiency test.

International Student Admission to Degree, Diploma and Certificate Program

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.

• Meet VIU’s English language requirements for academic programs.

• Academic programs may have additional program admission requirements and course prerequisites.

• International students who are BC high school graduates must have a minimum grade of “C” in English 12 to enter directly into an academic program or English 12 with a “C-” with appropriate TOEFL or IELTS result.

• Conditional letters of acceptance to enter academic programs are provided for students who meet the academic requirements but need to start in VIU’s English Language Program.

Entrance Scholarships for International Studentsviu.ca/international/awards.aspEntrance Scholarships are available to international academic students applying from Vancouver Island public and private high schools; international baccalaureate diploma graduates; and other select high achieving academic students. These scholarships are open only to students who meet the minimum English language requirements for academic programs. (See English Language Requirements for Academic Programs on this page.) Technology Resourcesviu.ca/technologyVIU provides students with access to a high-speed Internet service, wireless networking and numerous computer labs. All students, regardless of program, will need to use computers to:

• access the Internet to register for courses, view their grades and get information for course projects;

• use a word processing program to complete assignments;

• use e-mail to communicate with instructors and other students;

• access the official calendar online.

VIU primarily uses Windows and Microsoft Office products for basic computing tasks.

On-Campus Student Residencesviuresidences.caThe VIU on-campus residence village is located near the heart of the Nanaimo campus, close to classrooms, cafeterias, the gymnasium, library, bookstore, Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, Nanaimo Ice Centre, bicycle trails and community sports fields. The residences feature 386 rooms in single-room and four-bedroom apartments that share outdoor patios, a basketball court, beach volleyball court, bike storage and parking.

The single rooms are furnished with a bed, desk and chair, shelf and wardrobe space and a small refrigerator. Two rooms share one bathroom and are designated for either men or women. The rooms are wired for telephone, cable television and Internet access. There are specially-designed suites for students with disabilities.

Each building has a student lounge with a television, common cooking area, vending machines, coin-operated laundry, public telephone, and car and bicycle parking areas.

The four-bedroom apartments feature four separate bedrooms, two bathrooms and shared kitchen/living room space.

Homestay and Peerstay Programviu.ca/homestayThe purpose of the Homestay ($700/Month) and Peerstay ($425/month) Program is to provide international students with a supportive and welcoming environment in a Canadian family’s home. Students will have their own private bedroom and an area to study quietly while sharing the rest of the house with others. In Homestay, food is provided by the family while cooking/meal preparation is shared by all family members. Students may be taught to make their own breakfast and lunch while family members prepare dinner. Most families share household chores. Peerstay is the same except students will buy their own food, prepare all of their own meals.

This is an opportunity to learn and practice English. Host families can help students become familiar with Canadian customs and culture and introduce them to the Nanaimo community. All hosts have been carefully screened by the VIU Homestay office. The host family will pick the student up at the Nanaimo Airport or ferry terminal, provide three meals a day and offer a supportive environment.

We recommend that new international students spend at least their first semester in Nanaimo in Homestay or Peerstay.

Application deadline for Homestay/Peerstay is a minimum of 10 weeks before the start of classes. An application form will be provided with the Letter of Acceptance or is available at viu.ca/homestay.


Co-op Education & Work Opportunities

Co-operative Educationviu.ca/coopCo-operative Education (Co-op) combines classroom study with supervised, professional, paid, off-campus work experience in Canada and abroad. Co-op placements usually take place from May to October. Five of our programs include a Co-operative Education component:

International Student Work OpportunitiesOn- and Off-Campus Workviu.ca/careerWhile studying at VIU, international students are eligible to work on- or off-campus for up to 20 hours per week. Every semester the Campus Career Centre has listings for hundreds of on- or off-campus jobs. On-campus employment includes jobs such as assistant in academic faculties, library assistant, math centre support, computer lab monitor, research assistant and gymnasium assistant. The Centre for International Education also offers paid on-campus positions to international students.

Off-campus work is limited to students in academic programs and can be in a variety of areas, including the tourism, retail and service sectors. This program is available to qualified academic students for up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during vacation breaks. This is a great way to gain valuable Canadian work experience, get to know people in the community and make extra money while studying. For Co-op Education see page 28.

English Language ProgramVIU’s English Language Program offers courses focused on communication and preparation for academic studies. Students who are planning to enter academic programs and do not have the minimum test scores required for admission can take VIU’s English Language Program. On arrival at VIU, international students will complete the Vancouver Island University English Language Placement Test. After successful completion of the top level of the English Academic Preparation program, international students may apply to academic programs at VIU.

English Communication Program (ECP)7 or 14 weeks, 24 – 26 hours/week of instructionThere are three levels:

• Communications I (developing skills)

• Communications II (intermediate skills)

• Communications III (advanced skills)

This is an exciting, intensive way to quickly improve the ability to speak and carry on conversations in English. The program is designed for students who are not planning to continue academic studies in Canada. Emphasis is on development and improvement of speaking and listening skills. Students learn about life in Canada through interactive classroom exercises, short readings, social and cultural activities, volunteering, day trips, visits to community organizations and interactions with Canadian students. Upon successful completion of each level, students receive a certificate.

High School Summer Study Programviu.ca/summerstudyMalaspina High School at Vancouver Island University offers students from 14 to 17 years old an exciting opportunity to study and practice English during field trips while enjoying Canadian recreational activities every July and August. Students will study in the mornings then participate in sports such as basketball, soccer, golf and tennis, or take part in activities like kayaking, swimming and canoeing.

Group Programsviu.ca/groupsCustom-designed programs for groups of 10 or more students can be organized throughout the year. Groups of students 14 years and older can take English language courses, combined with recreational and cultural activities.

English classes are held in the morning; in the afternoon, students participate in exciting activities where they practice their newly-learned language skills.

Malaspina High School at Vancouver Island University for Canadian and International StudentsMalaspina High School, an affiliate of Vancouver Island University, is certified by the Government of British Columbia to offer a Grade 10, 11 and 12 high school program, leading to a British Columbia High School Graduation Diploma. Malaspina High School is dedicated to preparing Canadian and international students from around the world for entry into Vancouver Island University and other North American universities.

10-Week Program Malaspina High School is organized on a quarter system timetable that allows students to begin studies in September, November, February and April. Students wishing to take two courses only can do so by attending a 10-week Quarter.

Malaspina High School Admission RequirementsStudents must have:

• completed Grade 9, or equivalent;

• be 15 years of age before the first day of class for the Quarter in which the student is registered.

Admission is selective and based on previous academic record and a letter of recommendation. Entrance scholarships are available for qualified Canadian students.

English ProficiencyInitial acceptance into the Malaspina High School program is not dependent upon the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score.
